all right no matter how you look at it David Gilmore's soloing can be on the levels of you know Soulful and pristine and Majestic and there's a lot that goes into it this quick video is about one tangent of his playing that I noticed which when I thought about it and adopted it into my playing really changed um how I felt when I played the guitar which I think is something that everybody really wants to experience and so you know nobody can be David Gilmore except for David Gilmore and but but we can get real close to getting that feeling from our playing that we get from Gilmore's playing and so this video here is to show you one little quick tangent that really helped out and uh I'll show it to you right now all right so um we're going to use a Dorian backing track a really easy backing track it's going to be G minor to F I already have it I'll play it just a couple seconds so you can you know feel the groove here's the G minor f that's it back and forth G minor f all right it has that Pink Floyd kind of backing track already and you know what I'm going to do right now is I'm going to solo over this using a G minor pentatonic very simple form one box one right here and I'm gonna take a solo um like I would solo normally like my the Ian Stitch solo maybe four bars nothing crazy but I want you to hear that it's just uh like a normal solo it's it's nothing like David Gilmore it's an Ian Stitch solo so let's see how this goes oh that's the wrong button that was my Distortion here's my Looper oh [Music] all right so I kind of just set complete around the G minor pentatonic yes I I went down to the first fret here this little box five but you know you can't control that sometimes all right so how do we make this more David gilmore-esque well it's all about the phrasing and more importantly it's all about the imaginary percussion that David Gilmore plays when he's soloing so what do I mean about the percussion well when I was sawing picture walking through a series of rooms that have doors you know door a walk through the room door B then walk the room door C and so on when I was soloing I was kind of opening the door and my solo was walking through the room prepping myself to get to to Door B which represents those chord changes uh it's what I teach in this Channel all the time and then you know I would hit a chord tone chord B then I'd open uh the door and I would solo and I try to be in the now and think of different rhythms and different phrases and let loose and let whatever comes to me play now Gilmore does it differently Gilmore acts like a battering ram believe it or not you're probably like what because it's not aggressive but what he does is he like opens one door and kind of stops and then speeds up and Rams into the next door and blows it open and then stops for a second and then right and then starts to run increases the speed and you'll see what I mean and then boom slams into another door and when we think about this we can turn we can turn it into terms of percussion player of a percussion player all right so pretend that David Gilmore's is playing Bongos I'm gonna play the backing track and what I'm going to do is I'm going to try and visualize and make some sounds to show you what I mean all right so he is going to try and make a movement on the drums uh towards the next chord something like this [Music] there's the door ding ding [Music] do do that boom okay so that type of I hope you can hear what I'm saying here is I'm trying to create a prefix a preamble that leads into the chord changes and so the difference in mindset here and I will play trust me is instead of me trying to hit a chord tone um you know on that very you know first beat boom and then you know soloing and creating a Melody here we have more of a comforting structure where we have our scale we know the scale and now what we need to do is just create rhythms to move towards the next chord tones and so really quickly so here we have the G minor pentatonic that we're using I'm just using the form one you can use any single one you like okay but really we want to use what's comfortable for this exercise and Insider some G minor chord tones all right and inside are some F chord tones right there and I can use this F here I can use this F here and sometimes Gilmore is gonna come down to this F down here which is in the form of five so any of those chord tones are game um and I am going to try to move towards them so the first thing I'm going to do is do the same thing I said verbally create a rhythm verbally for you and then play it three or four times uh to show you that it's about the movement towards the moment that gives Gilmore that epic type sound so if we do this turn so let's take that rhythm [Music] let's even do it [Music] [Music] there's another one right I was running toward the door now let me do another one to show you let's see [Music] dude I don't know okay [Music] all right so these examples here are just really quickly me showing you how to think of it now what I'm going to do is take a full solo and I'm going to try and think preemptively am I headed towards my Gene am I headed towards my f and can I create a series of rhythms that move towards those goals I'm thinking before the chord change I'm thinking about running to it and when I hit it I kind of pause hold that note and then I move forward so let's see if I can play a couple things now when you hear this back in the replay it's not going to sound like it it's just not it's going to sound like a solo but I'm thinking about the individual rhythms moving towards the moment here we go foreign [Music] sorry allergies my mouth is so dry and so we'll do it one more time just one more time for you okay the map hasn't changed it's a G minor pentatonic it's G minor chord tones it's F major chord tones what has changed is my mental space of Rhythm trying to pretend I'm a percussion player leading into the chord changes now yes we're just doing here we don't have like the climax of of Gilmore we don't have the build yet that stuff will come in other videos this is about learning how to put that that je ne sais quoi as we say like that I don't know into your playing that gives you that Gilmore type movement okay so let's do it one more time let's see if we can hear it see if you can hear that everything I'm playing is before a moment not after let's see [Music] [Applause] foreign [Music] [Music] all right now have some fret buzz on this guitar again until you guess the weather so hopefully you could hear it there it was much different from the first guitar first guitar solo that I took and so on the patreon practice sessions it's about a 10 minute uh extra bonus video showing you how I kind of practiced for this video and I'm going to tell you this the this Revelation or quick hit um came from a dream I had which was really if you made it this long I'll share the story with you um I was I was sleeping had a dream and I was talking to myself when I said hey self you know like what makes Gilmore's stuff so you know Majestic and I was like oh he just leads towards the moment instead of playing after the moment and I was like oh okay cool and then I woke up the next day totally forgot about it and then at three in the afternoon I kind of was like oh wait yeah oh that dream and I tested it out and I was like yes that's exactly what's happening so you know we're on our way to kind of getting closer to the feeling of David Gilmore I have tons of videos on David Gilmore's soloing Styles I'll be listed below some be popping up here somewhere and I hope you enjoyed this Quick Stitch Method video on uh prefix Preamble percussion playing um to give you that feeling of uh David Gilmore's Majestic guitar approach all right rock and roll take care bye-bye
