[Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign so this solo is on a lot of top 10 lists of the greatest solos of all time and certain people call this the greatest solo of all time we're going to look at the cell in a few minutes but first I want to talk about the guitar the black Strat it's an amazing story David Gilmore had a couple of strats stolen and then in 1970 on the way back to the UK he bought a black Strat this Strat started out as a Fender Strat and quickly became the ultimate Parts caster and the most valuable Parts Caster in history because in 2019 it sold for just under four million dollars which at the time was the biggest sale of an electric guitar ever I think and the only thing original on it was the body so he got this guitar it was made from 68 and 69 Parts at the fender Factory and it was originally a Sunburst and act at the factory they oversprayed it with black and so as it got Relic over the 49 years that he owned it some of the black got rubbed off and you can see the the Sunburst underneath which I think is really really cool this guitar had six different necks over the course of the 49 years the electronics were changed constantly different sense of pickups from different makers he had a really cool switch put in where he could combine the bridge pickup and the neck pickup and indeed on this song that may have been the sound I'm not sure now at one point and here's a picture of this it's pretty crazy he put a humbucker in between the the bridge pickup and the neck pickup it's actually kind of a good idea but it looks kind of crazy the most invasive thing that he did that they did was they in 1983 they installed a kaler tremolo system now I was around when kalers were somewhat popular and it's the most invasive thing you have to cut out tons of wood so when they repaired the guitar they actually had to put a block of wood back in to repair that spot now the most amazing thing about the story of this guitar is in 1986 the Hard Rock asked David Gilmore for you know a piece of memorabilia for them to display in their restaurant so he gave them this guitar in return for a donation to charity okay so the Hard Rock had at several different restaurants it ended up in Miami at the Hard Rock in Miami in a case that had no glass on it and this case was at eye level I guess above a table where people could reach it and they actually started pulling parts off of it and kind of destroying it a little bit finally after 10 years Gilmore asked for it back and the Hard Rock Cafe claimed they owned it he produced paperwork saying we loaned it to you he got it back they couldn't even find the case let's look at a little film clip of Keith Williams from five watt World We Love Keith he's the best he gave me this film clip of the story of getting it back from the Hard Rock Cafe sadly the guitar was returned in very poor condition and without the original black hard shell case the guitar had been on display at the Hard Rock in Miami in a case without a glass front at eye level above a table there was damaged and missing parts so the guitar went straight off to Charlie Chandler's to be repaired when sold at Christie's the following parts were in place the original Sunburst Alder body oversprayed in Black a 1983 Fullerton era 57 reissue c-shaped neck with a 7.25 inch fingerboard radius and 21 vintage style frets Fender goto vintage style tuners one ply bevel black 11 hole pickguard neck and middle pickups dated to 1971 had been part of an entire pickguard installed in 73 and a Seymour Duncan custom wound ssl1c Bridge pickup which was added in 79. the original Bridge was refitted in 97 after the guitar had worn a kaler tremolo at one point you can see the area filled where the big routing was done for the kaler there was a five-way pickup selector switch replaced the original three-way switch in 85. and is famously shortened tremolo arm that's four and one half inches long was in place David used the black Strat from 1970 till 1984. widely considered to be one of the most important guitars in rock music this was Gilmore's main guitar on metal live at Pompeii Dark Side of the Moon wish you were here animals the wall the Final Cut and all of David's of solo albums the guitar would be sold along with 125 of his other guitars at auction at Christie's in 2019. so most of you know about 5 watt World Keith's links to these two Gilmore videos are down below we rely on Keith for he's basically the Encyclopedia of Qatar knowledge and so go check out his channel if you haven't but I think a lot of you already watched them hello RJ hello Rick thanks for joining guys really appreciate it so now let's talk about the amp rig on this song it's pretty well documented apparently he used a 100 watt high watt Half Stack I pulled out my 50 watt Highwood it sounded right for this and that that's lucky I think so it was biamped it had a hundred what uh High what Half Stack and then the other thing that was turned on was a Yamaha ra 200 Leslie so those were Blended in the studio so you get a slight churning effect rotating speaker effect at slow speed and apparently he had a big muff pie and an mxr dynacomp in front those were not turned up they're you know set to the sweet spots or whatever and then lots of delay lots of room Reverb and that's basically the sound it was this guitar now I'm using a fuzz by King tone that's called the the V2 version two fuzz I'm gonna do a video on this it's really good fuzz I'm also using my micro app so just a couple of elements to drive it there's quite a bit of surface noise but I can hide it with my volume pedal [Music] and the thing I love about this fuzz is when you put the volume knob on 10 it's really creamy and overdriven and then you back it down to nine it begins to get very stratty [Music] eight and a half [Music] six and a half hear all that Clarity at six and a half and I have tons of delay on this I'm actually going to turn it off to demonstrate but the other thing that's really great about this solo is the way it plays against the chords so you basically have a d chord the shape up here and he goes up there and I see the a chord when that happens right and then the cool thing when it goes to the C chord he does this D over C tonality right it's uh this thing and that creates a tension that he then resolves [Music] oh 10th note [Music] is impossibly slow he stretches it and then and the last thing I want to call your attention to and people don't talk about this much what he plays when the vocal re-enters is gorgeous foreign those licks happen under the vocal and they're Simply Amazing [Music] now the other thing that's amazing is the second solo on this before I start playing over that section there is a special offer on the master class click the link below there's a 14 day free trial you know we have 1800 videos 150 hours there's 100 video beginners course if you want guitar lessons check out the free trial in the master class so I'm going to play over the outro for just one second mostly because it's fun oh and this Jam track uh I had a couple of friends help me make it Nigel and Jeff Babcock hats off to them for for making a great Jam track all right here we go [Music] now that's with the fuzz all the way up so you see it's really creamy and I'm gonna turn down to like seven and a half it'll clean up and a half it cleans up even more [Music] foreign style I mean you don't have to learn this licks is to do broken phrases check it out and the polls just make sure you don't play in the long run on set break it up [Music] and I just love the way this fuzz cleans up [Applause] [Music] and of course he does that big thump that a lot of us do where you go [Applause] [Music] now another thing I didn't know man maybe you guys know this but on the Wall Part Two that amazing sound on the solo is a Les Paul gold top it's a 55 gold top and it's recorded direct and double compressed you know I always identified the Strat for that song because the strat's obviously playing the Rhythm on that song but the solo is his 55 gold top so he used the black guitar for most everything but occasionally he would step away and use a different guitar now one other thing about this solo and I'm going to show it to you one more time and then then we'll take some questions and have some fun but it's very laid back when I started learning this solo and I checked myself I found myself playing on top a little bit you can't do that and that's one of the great things about this solo he is so far behind I'm going to try and exaggerate that a little bit turn back on the delay play the solo one more time and then we'll move on to some questions [Music] so really laid back [Music] thank you foreign [Music] [Music] you can almost do no wrong the more you pull it back the better it feels and he does that naturally oh I have to talk about this guitar this is an exotic Strat that I bought I paid full price for this guitar uh about a week ago at my friend ola's Angel City guitars in the neighborhood and I flirted with it for two weeks I would go into the store and play and go this is a great guitar the main thing about it that's great is that the pickups are balanced this humbucker almost sounds like a single coil but it's not and it's the same volume it's really bright and chimey let me move to it and I will show you I'll turn off the delays my guilty pleasure the delays and show you this uh Bridge pickup now if I turn it down to eight it's the cool it almost looks like a P90 [Music] so the pickup technology on this is great the neck is amazing check out this flame on the neck it's just Wicked thanks for joining today from all over the world I really appreciate it [Music] back with the delays [Music] [Applause] so that's the bridge pickup sounds pretty good [Music] [Applause] [Music] okay I have to take this question yes I played on a Roger Waters solo record I've said this before but you asked I'll say it again amused to death at what God wants Jeff Beck played lead on that song and I played Rhythm I played Rhythm on I'm six or eight of the songs on that record and one of the ones was uh a song called what God wants and Jeff Beck played some of the most amazing lead guitar I've ever heard okay the silver sky is a great guitar now the question is how does it compare playing these souls in a silver sky to a strat well this is a super Strat and it's it's perfect the neck is perfect the Frets are perfect and they're medium jumbo Frets the action's super low uh it's a super strap and I have the tremolo arm vibrato arm whatever you want to call it I have it cocked Jeff Beck style I'm really getting attached to that because I just love that floaty thing in the you know in the sixth group Bridge the old school thing now this guitar is so well made that the minute I set it up like this took about a day and it plays perfectly in tune even when I'm doing this stuff that's the great thing about great guitars back to the silver sky the silver sky neck is the exact neck from John Mayer's 64 Strat that's not a neck that's right for me uh and and even Mark loteria's Fiore it's an amazing guitar but that neck's not right for me either I like the modern necks you know compound radius I'm not sure what all the differences are but when somebody does a strat with a true vintage neck and the silver sky is that that's not the neck for me so there you go now I'll pick up my silver sky for like a funk part because it does amazing Rhythm sounds I mean they nailed it you know the pickups are amazing it feels amazing but if I really want to play lead and get around and play fast and feel comfortable I go for the boutique strats you know and I've got several different ones so this is my newest one so there you go yeah it's all what you love a lot of people really love that traditional 60s Strat feel and I don't blame them because that's you know that's the Strat you know a lot of people really really like that so there you go I'm so glad Charles you like The Beginner's class yeah I'm going to add to that in the future too it's got 100 videos and I really structured it I'm so glad you like it um anyway one more play through on the minor section which you guys should check out too it's also considered one of the greatest solos of all time so I'll play out on it and a couple more questions [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] no it might be a little Out Of Tune I'm not sure no pretty close pretty great one last thing I mean when I was looking at Gilmore he learned to play guitar from a Pete Seeger LP on how to play the guitar and there's an accompanying book that came with it and he was really pleased because he was able to play a song with one chord and sing at the same time this is the other thing he said in this interview it's singing to David is just as important as guitar playing and when you think about that you realize maybe that's why his solos are so memorable because he's basically singing through his guitar but he learned to play guitar from a Pete Seeger LP pretty cool and I look those are still available they're actually not that expensive I I kind of tempted to maybe even buy that LP and have it sitting here it's pretty awesome so anyway guys great have a great weekend thanks so much check out the master class if you get a chance and I'll see in a couple of weeks on the next live stream here we go I'm going to play us out [Music] add my delay [Music] thank you [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music]
