[Music] [Music] um [Music] [Music] [Music] before the 93 victories you get down the closing life of bristol and it's any man for himself i've seen it done many times before the four championships before the legendary career [Music] when you got a great car like that you're not happy about it when that happens [Music] hated by many fans hate seeing their favorite athlete sports team or race car driver be outperformed or just plain dominated jeff gordon was the man turning this fear into reality this is a story about how a california kid nascar driver ever i'ma race him the same way he races me but that kind of stuff just uncalled for and i'm not going to stand for it [Music] in the 1990s you either had to race dale learn art or be dale earnhardt nothing else mattered the only thing that eluded dale was the prestigious daytona 500 trophy he had to wait 20 years to get his first but the california kid only needed five jeff gordon winning the 500 two out of three trials after dale waited 20 years really rubbed his fans the wrong way but jeff gordon did not care there's 33 kenny schroeder andy petry racing dale earnhardt racing and richard childress racing look at this mess [Applause] it did yes i thought it was going to be a crash the health line for the lead this is going to get exciting look at her heart coming up up on the back of jeff gordon down the back straight away he'll try to make it forward michael walker's going to try to make it [Applause] second [Applause] over there down the back straight away kenny irwin looks to the outside right here's where he has to make the boot and he wasn't able to get that run up under jeff gordon like he wanted to but that's what we said friday he was this far behind in the international race of champion he looks inside he goes outside he looks inside again okay right now he's got to pull right down on that back bumper and try to get him loose coming off turn four he does not have the muscle at this point but he may have some momentum here comes earnhardt he's all the way to the bottom almost in the grass he slides up the racetrack and jeff gordon will [Applause] i did valentine's yes it is ralph shane congratulations ray everingham you did it again you told him to protect the bottom that's exactly what he did is that where you were afraid he was going to come yeah well dale's pretty strong up off the bottom and uh you know jeff did a great job driving the car car wasn't the quickest car all day but he did a great job driving it i want to thank god first for giving us the opportunity to do this and uh dupont and quaker state pepsi everybody that supports us and i want to say hey to rick again i'm sorry he couldn't be here but uh god what a great day this team has been so awesome is this the beginning of a dynasty type march to another championship i don't know about that ralph we're just uh we're gonna take it one race at a time and have a good time it's just uh man what an awesome feeling to win the daytona 500. you know you got to give up that race car now ah we'll build another one ray abraham has done it again he's won the daytona 500 as a crew chief and for the fifth time this man dale earnhardt finished his second in the great american race he didn't lead a lot he led six laps in the first 20 and then came back to lead the last 11 [Music] laps he's just giving it a little smoke job coming down through there rear wheel spinning smoke flying out in the back of jeff gordon's car you had some problems earlier on and then the car we had to we had an ignition problem earlier on and uh the car just wasn't running up to par just wouldn't get up to speed and we finally switched boxes and the car and car ran a lot better but it came up in the draft there at the end and uh we were just trying to work i want to get with skinner try to work with him but i couldn't and he couldn't get with me and we just was trying trying to do all i could do just get to get to the 24 and his car was pretty strong off the corners and if i could have just got to him off the corner i might have got on her but i just couldn't get there came close though what happened at the very taylor those last couple laps when you were trying so hard dale got me got beat dale earhart fifth second for the fifth time to ken squire he is still in the car brooke is right here she walked by me and said what a race indeed two million dollars richer jeff gordon as he pulls it off fending off the old warrior earnhardt those last four or five laps is earnhardt trying to turn him just a little use up those rear tires he's just about ready to clamber out of car number 24 after a brilliant victory in one of the greatest daytona 500s of all time here is the champion of the 1999 daytona 500 jeff gordon having just a moment gets his shoes straightened out and here he is jeff those last 10 laps what a race that is a dream come true for me to race dale earnhardt down to the final uh finish all the way down the line for the daytona 500 it does not get any better than that and uh i'm the last person i think of this racetrack today i thought we were going to win a race i certainly didn't have many friends out there but i had one strong race car and i tell you what i'm glad ray erham and all these rainbow warriors took four tires there at the end because the car was handling great and man i want to thank dale for a great race i mean he did everything he possibly could and uh i've learned he's probably gonna tell you i learned too much from him because he's taught me a lot of things in the last couple years and that's the only way i kept him behind me take us through the last moments of the race coming down out of turn four well you know i saw him dropping back trying to get some momentum on me and and i got out there too far in the middle of three and four and i i had to back off to tell you the truth because i knew he was going to get me at the line if i didn't and uh i may have backed off a little too much he got up on my bumper and almost got underneath me i got a little sideways uh but i knew i was going to make it to the finish right from that point on and i'll tell you i had had a mirror full today and i want to thank dupont automotive finishes uh quaker state pepsi chevrolet this is an awesome monte carlo today and those goodyear tires are awesome too thank you for everything you guys do for us dale he really tried to work you over in those final moments well thank god that uh you know you're racing with a guy like that and thank god for this this team and this awesome race car i i just am so blessed and so fortunate but he worked me over big time to say the least you know and that's the way he is that's how hard he is and and how bad he wants to win the state tony 500 he got a taste of it last year and he won it again this year uh i wanted to be able to be the one to keep him from doing that and this is an awesome win for us got to thank rj reynolds and winston i i can't believe how much money we just won today i cannot believe that congratulations are in order for a young champion 2 million richer jeff gordon stormed into the 2000s not slowing down after the tragic death of dale earnhardt there was one less driver on the track to challenge gordon drain but the son of gordon's greatest rival did just that at jeff gordon's most successful tracks the restrictor plates gordon challenged dei's dominance in arnheart country was not having it i mean we got 140 000 people here with five and a half laps to go nobody's sitting down whoa going way to the bottom of the racetrack and jimmy johnson comes right up the bumper of dale earnhardt jr and gordon gets the lead but can he keep it no he can't and they thought he's just so strong they can make a run on him and obviously they get to oh boy that was almost a disaster gordon inches ahead right there's where junior is so strong sailing off one car around and it's brian vickers all right the caution is out and we are past the red flag lab we are past the red flag left the remember the field was frozen when the caution flag came out and who at that moment was the leader we'll have to go back and see jeff gordon will be the leader and i think they just told the crowd that too scoreboard has not yet changed to reflect that but that is what we're being told as of the moment of caution here's jeff gordon leading harvick and junior yeah the car is sideways and jeff gordon will win the aaron's 499 over here and the dei talladega streak ends at five as jeff gordon wins his first restrictor plate points pay race since this event back in the year 2000 a big win for the 24 guys despite how big to beat the dei guys oh man thank god somebody did uh i didn't want to do it that controversial i tell ya the pepsi boys put it on the beer boys today but i'll tell you what uh wow what an amazing day what a great race this package that we have here is is incredible i uh i'm so happy that uh nascar's picked what they have here and makes for great racing and uh it's about the safest thing as we could possibly have out there too but man i tell you what it was harry and just staying out of trouble gotta thank dupont of course pepsi uh gmac quaker state uh who else do we have on here well papa joe called from the hospital he couldn't believe he could not believe how exciting that win was well we've been trying to get one for papa joe and i know rick and papa joe are watching back to hospital boys this was for you yes long time since you've won a plate race jeff a long time since i've won a race it seems like but uh i can't think of a better one to win you know uh we run so darn good uh on the restricted play tracks but the dei guys have just been been embarrassing us and uh yeah i didn't know what was going to happen there i mean i i i knew i got ahead of them you know going into three i couldn't pass them i passed them but i wasn't passing them uh you know and uh luckily right before i put the afterburner on the costume must come out so i'm gonna go with nascar on that one i'm not sure if everybody here agrees but i certainly do and there was a lot of debris out on that racetrack too yeah i'm not sure if they were pepsi cans or beer cans but there's a lot of aluminum out there on the track that's for sure so i did a burnout over all those cans and man i tell you what just feels great to get back to victory lane and to celebrate these guys right here this is one awesome race team right here gordon retained his restrictor plate title and racked off multiple huge wins at talladega and daytona we got them you guys are awesome jeff gordon a five-time talladega winner he knows how to get it done jeff gordon takes the win at talladega but one of those wins was no ordinary one april 29 2007 jeff gordon surpassed arnhart and career victories on of all days dale arnhardt's 54th birthday and of all tracks talladega super speedway r r country so gordon who is trying to eclipse dale earnhardt's place on nascar's all-time win list and could do so with a victory today here they go down to the bottom you just heard him and we're off to the races they'll be coming to eight to go you see jimmy johnson the 48 tony stewart in the 20 gordon in the 24th down to the bottom and they go now here's what's gonna happen when that 41 car closes that hole up high they got nowhere to go what are they going to do now there's a tight draft on the bottom lane and they're pushing forward once again just a nice soft push and you see jimmy johnson once again he's trying to get in the right lane here he was up high he's down low waiting for the push gotta have the push and read sorenson in that 41 car he slammed right down in front of tony stewart that 20 car sucked up behind that 48 car of jimmy johnson they'll be coming to seven to go this time oh it's getting getting pretty now i like the way it's shaping up junior had been taking it easy for about the last 20 laps because he was very close on fuel mike i just talked to his car chief tony gibson who said they should be good to go and junior ought to go any time now [Music] this is when you earn your money right here boys we're riding with and that's david's streaming in the 40 car giving it a little bump draft going off in the turn three and you see the 11th car has now dropped to the bottom he sees what's going on behind him now he's gonna have to start blocking [Music] through the tri-oval where the finish line is it daytona here it's a lot further down toward turn one the finish line is here the finish six laps away oh mcmurray says okay enough of this and he's gonna try to make the pass and does jamie mcmurray and he's got help from his teammate david reagan in that sixth car here comes earnhardt jr in the eighth car he'll come to the bottom of the racetrack they got nothing for the eight cars i see that coming down he's got it and streamy comes over jeff gordon fifth junior gives mcmurray a playful butt toward turn three i saw junior when he came from the back of the pack earlier to the front he's been playing some mind games boys but here comes that 24 card david streaming trying to block him down on the bottom side he can't do it here he comes with him from his teammate yeah don't don't talk about superman's cape jeff gordon won the ball he's had a fast car all day and he's got [Applause] the rear view mirror help all he can do leading this race right there he's got a good race car i saw that in practice on thursday he or friday he had a great car but i don't think he can hold off that eighth car yeah jamie mcmurray get to the front too soon i liked what he did he had no choice he was going to get sacked either way oh hamlet got a bump they almost got out of shape hamlet was trying to get into the line behind the uh jeff gordon so he could go forward that outside line is still holding together pretty darn good we got 29 cars within a second of each other they'll be coming to four to go this time smoke rudiment oh no what's happening to david remember we had a report that he had smoke in the cup come on this is not what the 11 car wanted to see remember mike ford talked about didn't want to see a green right checker just as jeff gordon took the lead caution comes out goodness gracious of me [Music] now nascar has a rule we're at four laps to go that if we get to the end of the scheduled race distance and we're not under green we're under caution they will make one attempt to finish the race under a green white checker situation bobby allison daryl waltrip with kelly yarborough tightly packed in the low 80s earnhardt and gordon that's all my heroes it's all my heroes right there on that one list green flag johnson to the inside and there goes kurt bush in the two car with him pushing him they're going to trap mcmurray in the 26 on the high side boy i'll say look at him fanned out hi low high low somebody help me oh they're going to steward the 20 to the high side with no help they're three wide off it's over there's the caution there is the caution right there only one attempt at this green white check and stewart has crashed while everyone lifted for the caution flag tony stewart ended up in the wall and we certainly know that jeff gordon the 24 car was leading this race at the time of caution now one thing that differs from determining the restart order after a caution in the race is they'll go to where the cars were at the minute the caution came out as far as the finishing order not where they crossed the last loop for the finish of the race let's see what happens here because they were all coming up to speed and there was a lot of blocking going on you see gilliland i just saw him cut down in front of tony got into solder solder still okay four wide four wide and no the 16 comes down catches the 70. but there's action in front of these guys well elliott sadler and the 16 got together that's what caused the wreck right here you see the 38 and tony who tipped david gilliland around somebody must uh look at 26. ouch man that's a hard hard hard hit and there's no safer barrier there checkered flag waves on jeff gordon his 77th career nascar nextel cup victory jimmy johnson second kurt busch is third unofficially jamie mcmurray dale earnhardt jr daytona winner kevin harvick gillian stremi newman and truex the top ten you'll see the unofficial running order across the top of your screen well i guess the fans didn't listen to junebug because you see a lot of debris flying out on the racetrack [Music] i just think that uh jeff gordon winning jeff gordon's just on a roll this year guys he's got all the momentum everything's going his way he's had four poles uh he's gonna be hard hard hard to handle all this year and remember this win right here that's ten more bonus points in his bank account making 20 now to add to his 5 000 points when we get to the chase chevy congratulations jeff gordon winner of today's race from chevy an american revolution a wild finish in talladega as biffle sadler crash coming out of turn two along with solder and tony stewart gets turned to the inside there is wall gordon taking the lead at lap 185 from jamie mcmurray just prior to david rudeman's engine going up and the final caution coming out so on behalf of jeff gordon allstate will donate a thousand dollars to the urban youth racing school allstate official insurance sponsor of nascar are you in good hands this fellow is dick bergeron is in victory lane we've seen jeff gordon now it's 77 victory lanes but this may be his most enthusiastic ever [Applause] high fives for the crew 77 wins the 77th coming on dale earnhardt's birthday your reaction i'm overwhelmed i i i mean we just had uh so many things working against us other than this race car this dupont chevrolet was unbelievable today but um i i never dreamed we were going to win that race um you know towards the end there we were just so far back had too many guys good guys we had to pass and uh you know just just i just didn't think we'd get 77 here and i don't think i think there's a lot of people out there that didn't want us to um i've never never caused a riot before winning but uh you know well maybe once or twice but uh this is awesome i'm just so proud of this whole entire team to get here to victory lane uh you know back to back you know to do it at phoenix in the the impala and then to do it here in the monte carlo unbelievable day what's with the fans throwing stuff what's going on i don't know i thought i thought junior had more power than that though because i thought they were gonna throw a toilet paper uh that's what he asked him to throw and i saw maybe one roll but uh i don't know you know what there's a lot of a lot of fans out there that are big earnhardt fans and probably didn't want to see this broken and i know there's a lot of my fans out there as well and so i appreciate their support and i appreciate the enthusiasm and and you know the opinions of all the fans out there so what are you gonna do you know we're here to win and uh steve latorre all the guys in this dupont chevrolet they did the job to get it done today and i gotta thank pepsi nicorette uh i forgot to thank sparkle last week and want to thank them um you know gmac everybody that uh that makes this thing happen pepsi and and of course dupont that they're so awesome to uh to be with us for 15 years a lot of fun congratulations on a great drive what a great day bye troy dale jr said he hated his fans throwing anything on the racetrack but if you had to throw something throw a roll a toilet paper nobody ever had to have stitches getting hit with a roll of toilet paper in the back of the head during pre-race the fans were admonished here by grant lynch the president of the speedway that anyone throwing things on the track at the end of the race would be arrested and it was encouraging to see sheriff's deputies handcuffing and leading out some people who disrespected the sport and jeff gordon's win when you're pre-warned and you do it anyway that's asking for trouble if you ask me the thing about it though we knew if you won this race you were going to have to beat the hendrick cars they end up one two but give a call at the penske race and they finish third and ninth and how about dale earnhardt incorporated on dale earnhardt day dale earnhardt junior finishes fifth martin troops junior his teammate finishes ten twelfth car didn't even have a fender on the right front still finished or a cow close up some other part yeah first win from the poll at talladega since 1998 and the fourth straight win by hendrick motorsports in the spring talladega race [Music] as the years went by the hatred dwindled he wasn't winning the way he used to he became teammates with his arch rival and other stars sort of took over the bad guy persona he turned into the savvy veteran the new kid on the block somehow turned into the last old school racer left and somewhere down this 20-plus year road all the hatred turned into respect when he announced his retirement it wasn't met with happiness instead sadness from all nascar fans dale singer fans grew an attachment to gordon over the years simply because he reminded them of happier times [Music] if you still have a problem with jeff gordon in the modern day then you need to rethink things in 2001 he had to unfairly put the entire sport on his back for years because there wasn't anyone else that could carry the load if jeff gordon wasn't there to catch the sport when dale senior fell it might look very different today for the worst thank you for watching and please subscribe like and comment [Music] you
