over the past four years i've quit multiple high paying tech jobs where the salaries range from 100 to 200 000 and i see a lot of comments on the internet recently where people are saying that they would do anything to make over a hundred thousand dollars so i wanted to offer my perspective on well why would i quit these jobs then also if you do anything to make over a hundred thousand dollars you could learn to code for eight hours a day for a few years straight like the rest of us anyways none of the jobs i'm going to be talking about in this video are fang companies if google were to send me an offer right now for 200 000 plus dollars i would gladly accept but unfortunately they've rejected me twice now but if you on the other hand are aiming for top companies like google facebook and more you should check out interviewing io this is a place where you could practice realistic coding interviews with the largest network of vetted senior engineers and it's anonymous so you won't be embarrassed the engineers you practice with will give you actionable feedback and advice on exactly what you need to work on you could book within as little as 24 hours to start practicing with an experienced engineer and the best part is you don't have to pay until you're hired so if you're interested click the link in the description to learn more alright so now i'm going to talk about why i quit these jobs and to explain this i'm just going to go over the four main things that make up a job the money the work the time and the people i think there's a big misconception when it comes to what making a hundred thousand dollars actually means a lot of people think it means you're rich [Music] what it actually means is you can afford rent in a big city you can buy coffee take out insurance casual entertainment from time to time um you know middle class lifestyle kind of things that's not to say that going from making breakfast sandwiches at dunkin donuts to laying in your bed making api calls for fifty dollars an hour isn't life changing but having a one hundred thousand dollar base salary isn't the same as winning a hundred thousand dollar jackpot at a casino while the number does look cool on your offer letter you have to imagine all of your expenses over the course of the year that will be coming out of that one hundred thousand dollars after rent taxes food entertainment and other bills you're not exactly on the road to becoming rich overnight and don't forget that you actually have to work for it [Music] it probably only took up until your first internship to realize that everybody's working on the same eighty percent of all software engineers right now are either working on the front end of a crud app or the back end of a crud app when we first start coding we like to imagine that we're going to work on all these cool things like self-driving cars hoverboards anti-gravity boots where you could walk on walls but in reality a majority of projects you're going to be working on out there are boring and unfortunately all the coolest ones also happen to be the hardest ones and the process of working on them isn't as cool as you thought in your head either the development process of anything cool is actually pretty slow i mean i would have thought we'd have holograms by now but no the ps5 is basically just ps4 with upgraded specs [Music] in my opinion time is more valuable than money and the time you'll have when you're younger is more valuable than the time you'll have when you're older that's just my personal opinion but if i'm given the choice i can think of a lot of better ways i'd spend my time than creating react.js components now the neat thing is the time you actually spend working will depend directly on your boss's expectations of you so as long as you don't raise expectations too high by putting in maximum effort you can put yourself in a position where you work hard for three hours each day and act like you work date however you'll never get completely out of those extra hours because you will have to be around to go to meetings or answer slack messages otherwise people are going to notice that you're not working [Music] for the people that work in tech for the most part very rarely do i find myself wanting to hang out with a co-worker outside of work or becoming closer friends with someone that i work with sure it has happened before i've worked with some cool people at some cool companies on some cool things but a lot of the time i don't like the people that much that i'm working with there's always so many meetings going on in tech and you're constantly going to have to participate in small talk yes small talk the conversations about neutral topics and nobody offends anyone else and then there's the fake laughs and the fake smiles and let's be real nobody actually cares about anyone else's personal lives it's very fake and a complete waste of time and just talking to the same people every day when i don't like them and acting like i'm their friends it's just complete lie and i don't i just want to be real about it and just say hey i don't like you guys but i want to work on this i want to make money and i'll do the job but just i don't i don't know man all right so the main point of this video isn't just to throw shade at software engineering positions without the tech industry who knows where i'd be it has completely helped me to set myself up financially to the point where i'm not stressed about financial issues and to the point where i can make a decision like this to not continue working at these jobs now full disclosure my youtube channel did earn over a hundred thousand dollars last year so that is a huge factor in making this decision to quit my tech job but if i really tried i probably could have handled both youtube and a job and earned over 250 000 this year but for the reasons listed in this video i don't want to do that i know what it's like to put maximum effort into your work for long periods of time and i'm just not really in the mood to go through that for the next year if not for some of the reasons listed in this video i would keep a job and do youtube at the same time if there was a perfect job someone could give me that i loved right now sure i'd take it but i've noticed over the years that at pretty much every corporate job there's gonna be things that you don't like about them but you know what i do love making youtube videos i like coding i like making youtube videos i can get paid to code and make youtube videos so i'm just gonna stick with this for now and before i end the video another reason i wanted to make this is just to show you guys that not everything is how you might think it's going to be in your head and i'm sure you probably all know that by now but if you're younger and you haven't gotten your job yet just don't have your hopes too high because then you may be disappointed so that's about it for this video thank you guys for watching like and subscribe and i'll see you guys in the next one
