Halo Reach was probably one of the best games to come out in 2002 ten it had a spectacular campaign a competitive multiplayer an intense firefight mode a creative forged game type and custom games that literally kept people coming back to play the games non-stop but one thing that was so cohesive across all of the different types of ways to play this game was the fact that your character your Spartan was the protagonist of whatever you were playing in the progression system that Bungie came up with in Halo Reach having players earn points to save up and get armor that looks cool but also is unlocked once you've earned a certain threshold by playing a certain amount of time was one of the best ways to both promote a games longevity and have people continue to play a game while also rewarding players who've spent a ton of time in game Halo Reach really was a full package and it lived up to the hype and even though we gave the game a subpar rating when we reviewed it a couple years ago most of that can be accounted to the fact that the server's weren't working for a very long period of time and the framerate issues on the Xbox one still bug me but hopefully that gets updated in a Master Chief collection and reach finally gets the inclusion that it's long deserved but out of all of the Halo games that we've had so far Halo Reach probably had arguably the best customization across the board I'll be honest I'll always be a fan of the art style that Halo 3 had and I love the way the armor looked but as far as customization was concerned Halo Reach kind of hit that perfect mark all of the armor variants looked like things that could be halo armor and there was a lot of variations of armor that was familiar to players who have been fans of the Halo series for a very long time but also new types of armor that kind of just expanded the world and universe of Halo as a whole and the way they revealed new armor that was available the further along you got in your rank was a real cool way to reward people for what they've done and accomplished without spending their credits but also kind of sneak peeking some of the new armor that was kind of getting close to you being able to unlock a horse like everyone else I just looked up all the armor online on my own accord but it was still nice to know that I was getting closer every time I ranked up to unlocking some sort of armor that I really wanted I really appreciate he will reach now looking back at where halo has kind of gone because it was extremely straightforward you played the game you earned credits and once you hit your credit threshold you leveled up you could also spend your credits and buy any type of armor that you wanted you customize your chest plates your shoulders your helmet and other little extras along the way like you could have a bionic arm if you wanted the fact that your character would easily be viewable in game lobbies made there an extra emphasis on you needing to have the coolest looking Spartan compared to everyone else in your game and it was so awesome that however you had your character look they would be rendered in all the cutscenes on Halo reaches campaign so that you would see your character when you played through the story I think another huge part of why this was so great was the fact that everything was easily enough obtainable if you were willing to put the time into it it wasn't like Halo 4 where there was so many different helmets and this huge massive list of different things that you could get where it became overwhelming with Halo Reach the list was small enough where each armor kind of stood out on its own and they kind of just picked the best of the best possible armor to present and especially in Halo 4 in Halo 5 it feels like they just threw anything that they somewhat came up with in 30 minutes into the game and it just doesn't look as great or maybe as charming as Halo reaches on there did I mean look at this armor from Halo 5 this this doesn't feel like halo at all Halo Reach did a good job at just streamlining what armor needed to be in the game and making sure that everything that was in the game was really cool in its own way while Halo Reach could have let you have any visor color you wanted it was unique that they limited how many visor colors you actually had to choose from so that your character would look unique based off of what you had to work with it didn't completely jump the shark on what styles would be practical for a Spartan in war as having like a hot pink visor would be kind of weird but the fact that they chose five main visor colors gave enough variety where you could make your character feel like your own while also kinda still blending in with the art style and other characters in the universe the default visor color was actually an okay visor it wasn't necessarily the masterchief visor but it worked well in this new character in noble six and kind of was the visor most people played the game through on their first time the silver visor was kind of a joke at first because it was just a slightly cleaner version of the default visor but as the game started to get a little bit older and players got to higher ranks and had different visors to choose from picking the silver visor actually made your character stand out a little bit more the blue visor was easily one of the most popular visors that people had because they could still get it at a relatively early level after a little bit of grinding and of course it matched up with some of the ODST armor even though I personally still like the silver visor on ODST Armour but that's besides the point then there is the black and gold visor colors which you could only get if you reached a pretty high level of play and you had to save up quite a bit just to get it but if you slapped either of these visors on any helmet your character definitely looked pretty awesome this kind of was the same thing with the chest plates and shoulders some of them would only be available at a pretty high rank but even if you're new to the game you still had enough variety to really make your character look unique this is also the first Halo game where there was a difference in appearance between male and female Spartans or in Halo 3 it just changed your voice and didn't change the way your character looked at all which was kind of weird and they added Spartan effects or death effects that would happen with your character when you died or you can kind of just see it off of your character but if you wanted things like hearts to fly out of your body when you die or to have a storm on your face that was an option you could have to the fact that there was the ability and the possibility of you one day literally unlocking everything in the armory was a motivation to a lot of hardcore players to reach that ultimate rank and get that skull helmet that showed that you've unlocked everything in the armory typically you had to be at least the rank of Eclipse to do that which is a pretty high up rank not the highest but it's up there and was quite the grind to get there but kudos to the people who actually got that far personally I just wanted to get the security helmet which took me a long time grind up enough points to get and to get to the high enough level to get that but since I was a fan of the security helmet from Halo 3 and that was my go-to armor I needed it in Halo Reach also and I finally earned it one day and I was pretty proud of myself Luke what armor did you have on your Spartan put it put it on the screen just just the text of it not the picture or video or both that works too if Halo was to go back to something more along the lines of a streamlined customization system like they did in Halo Reach I feel like Halo would really have a more dedicated player base even going back and playing the Master Chief collection it feels like something's missing with the fact that everything is already unlocked from the beginning I miss having cosmetic items that kind of showcased at least how much I played the game or how long I've been on the game I really feel like they mishandled cosmetics completely in Halo 5 almost opting for a more loot based system which was completely ridiculous and unnecessary and while halo reaches rank system wasn't flawless some ranks took way too long to level up rest in peace if you're a Warrant Officer grade 3 you'll be there for a year but simplified and easy to grasp system with credits really just made the game work and it gave everyone goals to work for right away not everyone cares about a multiplayer rank or a kill death ratio but they do care about how they look in accordance to the people that they're playing with and Halo Reach was just an awesome game because it made the universe feel alive with these Spartans fighting on reach especially if you're either playing campaign or firefight or even invasion and multiplayer where your Spartans fighting against elites unfortunately in Halo Reach they did downsize the role that elites had in multiplayer where in Halo 2 & 3 you could just play an elite outright if you wanted to and because of that the types of customization were extremely limited when it came to elites pretty much they just had a few different overall elite permutations to choose from and you couldn't actually customize anything directly on these characters I wish they went a different route on that because it was nice to be able to customize your elite in Halo 3 it does make sense they changed it because elites actually had a completely different role when you play as them in Halo Reach they're bigger they take more damage and they move faster but still having some customization would have been extremely nice we also can't forget the people who pre-ordered the special edition of Halo Reach not a flaming helmet which was really cool like in Halo 3 Bungie employees had flaming helmets and that was kind of the symbol that yeah you were playing with an official Bungie employee which I've only ever seen happen once with me and in Halo Reach they changed it to the blue flaming helmet to signify you're playing with an official Bungie employee and the red flaming helmet were available to the people who pre-ordered the special edition of the game however when Bungie officially left halo in the hands of 343 industries during that final month before their departure they made the blue flaming helmet available for all players who signed up through the bungie.net in a perfect world I would love to see halo Infinite take on this format from Halo Reach and how they handle Armour permutations and a simpler level up system like they had in Halo Reach and while I like the art style of Halo Reach as a whole I would like them to go more down the route of what they did in Halo 3 art wise but when it comes to the armor designs they can take a huge sample from Halo Reach when you compare the colors between Halo 3 and Halo Reach you can tell that Halo Reach has more washed out colors but maybe if they take the art direction from Halo Reach and add the colors from Halo 3 and Halo 2 we might have the perfect looking at game we wanted for a long time but that's it for today if you enjoyed this video hit the like button down below leave a
