this video is brought to you by nordvpn stick around to find out more this is one of the worst songs i've ever heard and it's given me a real bad taste about some other things the track list without the benefit of the doubt appears to be utter garbage that's what it looks like this is the first time in my life that i feel like the ball is being dropped on eminem no matter who you are it's impossible to knock it out of the park on every occasion across authors directors and even the most revered painters in history there's usually one body of work that can be pointed to and held up as a blip in an otherwise stellar career and unsurprisingly hip hop is no different whether it's jay-z seeming like a shadow of his former self when he returned on 2007's kingdom come method man bowing to major label pressure and diluting his vision onto calzero the prequel or nicki minaj's queen coming across as anything but the victory lap that it was intended as the culture has a long history of witnessing talented artists falls short of the mark and depending on who you ask it's something that nas has been weathering from the days of illmatic until very recently when he and hitboy found a new formula for vitality to others the descent has been languishing in mediocrity ever since the massacre and has never recaptured the spirit of his glory days but for some artists they stray so far from the path that they don't only make a subpar project but an undeniable flop and depending on the artist in question this can come from a creative downturn personal struggles or anything in between so for this video we're taking a look at four occasions when incredible artists produced records that failed to live up to the hype six studio albums and countless mixtapes playlists and everything in between into his career two things are for certain about the work of drake one it'll shift ridiculous almost unprecedented numbers and two some fans will be left wanting something more from him on 2021's certified loverboy the loud but vocal minority that pined for drake to push himself out of his comfort zone morphed into a larger one than ever before as for many fans the long-awaited album simply wasn't it look as much of a distraction and a focus all of this is right now it's not the reason clb is such a dud of a record and why that is we may never know the real answer but from an outside perspective it seems like a lot of it could have to do with a lack of inspiration something that's been looming larger and larger and larger on drake's project since he dropped the dreadfully boring views from the six and certified lover boy i think is the most punishing of these 90-minute marathons that drake has been dropping as of late and that's mostly due to a lack of memorable songs and even memorable performances from drake himself considering that certified lover boy marked the beginning of an era in which he owns his own masters it would be easy to assume that clb was nothing more than a cash grab but even if he is a megastar drake is ultimately human and as such is as susceptible to pride or a desire to prove haters wrong as the rest of us are released at the drop of a hat with no promotion other than an instagram post that set the world on fire drake's next project honestly never mind saw him take a leap to abandon his comfort zone altogether but even though this level of daringness was exactly what drake's haters had always wanted he ultimately fumbled when it came to the execution just as they did with certified lover boy the joe budden podcast had some reservations about the album alright so i want to talk to you about nordvpn the key to unlimited freedom on the internet at nordvpn they want you to take full advantage of their 5000 plus servers to y'all when marvin's room came out headlines and do all that for the game and this what you do on a couple bad projects to y'all you fickle i would retire i found dre i retired he still had people to answer to music to be made and cater to a certain way this is probably the first time that you're hearing freedom from him i also think that he has probably heard the talk of he never does anything um uh experimental so here you go i'm gonna do a concept album for lack of a better term echoing the sentiments of fantano ice acknowledged that drake should be commended for taking a risk but that the end product ultimately left something to be desired i said i do have some love for the album being that when clb dropped we said it was him trying to be real safe it was just a regular drink album you didn't really take any risks with that being said this is a risky album for him that's stepping out on the branch there i'm giving him props for trying that that does not mean i have to like it i wasn't in the demo for this project while these are all objective and valid takes the real sign that something had gone awry with this latest album was the fact that even academics drake's number one stan had his critiques about the rollout and release saying that the difficulty in categorizing the house album and its submission from the usual playlists has meant that it fell short places like grab caviar only have one choice of song to put on he has 13 dance songs one rap song this is not a hip-hop album but while act conceded that the record underperformed he didn't necessarily believe that it underwhelmed and that it would have a greater significance for drizzy's legacy the reason why i'm calling this a important album from drake is because i believe that drake is the greatest artist that has taken the least amount of chances kanye takes a chance every album every album is so [ __ ] different when kanye said that he was gonna stop making secular music and only do gospel i said it is a rap kanye continually challenges himself we all say he's probably one of the only artists that has started off a career three for three three albums three classics what did he do he blew the sound up after graduation here's 808s and heartbreaks kanye is a line pusher kanye changes the sound that makes him greater than just being a better being a great rapper the real importance of this album is that drake is finally doing that we would all consider he's not the best act he stepped in a realm where he's not the best monotony and dropping the same thing and doing the same formula over time will burn you out this was needed that drake could also do more experimental with reviews such as the one from the guardian wishing that he would apply the same restlessness to his persona as he did to his music some believe that the listener fatigue that we saw with clb remained in place due to his unwillingness to switch up his lyrics nevertheless drake remains publicly unbothered by having two misfires to his name in a row arguing that the onus was on the audience to come along for the ride it's all good if you don't get it yet it's all good that's what we do that's what we do we wait for you to catch up we caught up already my goodness whenever talk turns to eminem's discography there's only ever two contenders for the worst record that he's ever produced either the absurd accent filled relapse or more commonly 2018's revival a record which in the eyes of many combines all the worst things about latter day m m into one collection before its release the campaign for the wrecker got off to a bad start with untouchable among m's most overtly political tracks since mosch or white america some listeners felt that em's intentions were skewed by his delivery while for joe budden his attempt to portray the differences between how white and black people are treated in america was actively offensive this is one of the worst songs i've ever heard and it's given me a real bad taste about some other things the track list without the benefit of the doubt appears to be utter garbage that's what it looks like this is the first time in my life that i feel like the ball is being dropped on eminem by whoever the is handling eminem somebody over there should be saying something this seems disingenuous it doesn't seem sincere it seems like a ploy and a gimmick to sell records this is disgraceful i hate it change this cover change the tone of this album i ain't heard from you in four years i want to hear from you at the outset eminem was indignant in the face of critique and when speaking to shay 45's own sway he said that his decision to push against the grain of the time had backfired maybe because it doesn't sound like everything else and and what um what most people are doing maybe that was what tainted their ear i remember a time in hip-hop where you had to be so different from the next person or you were trash there's a shift somewhere that happened that if it doesn't sound like everything else then it's trash automatically although disheartened and angered by the reception revival's failure lit a fire under him and gave way to what in the minds of his hardcore fans at least was a return to form with kamikaze and music to be murdered by i said like four mil when i put out a bad album he rapped on premonition revival flopped came back and i scared the crap at him from the days of his 10 day tape onwards chicago's chance the rapper seemed easy to get on board with independent original and above all unapologetically himself fans flocked to his unique delivery in gospel-infused production across acid rap and coloring book but while he was always a far cry from a gangster rapper 2019's the big day represented a tipping point in that he suddenly became positive to an obnoxious extent billed as his official debut album the big day which was essentially an ode to his marriage became absolute meme fodder and in turn received a rare zero from anthony fantano the following year he'd go on to make his list of the worst albums of the entire decade but rather than being alone fantano's sentiments were echoed by mike's c-town of dead-end hip-hop if somebody came up and said yo this is the whackest album i've ever heard i would not argue against them i'd be like that's fair i think that this was a poorly planned out idea with even worse execution well for a chance to really expect us to resonate with an hour and 20 minutes about you talking about how much you love your your wife your life your kid jay and beyonce could do this because we know plenty about jay we know plenty about beyonce i don't know jack about his wife how about you make songs that lead up to it exactly but you just jumping in it's okay this day in my life and you think that we're supposed to care after being trolled into submission chances misery was only compounded by the messy dealings with his former manager that suddenly left hip-hop's good guy looking a little more sinister than we first imagined to date he has yet to follow it up with anything other than a pair of singles that didn't exactly set the world alight kid cudi speeding bullet to heaven when he first came out the gate the impact of kid cudi wasn't simply undeniable but actively important on a global scale known to be a refuge for countless kids who were experiencing their own demons cuddy's manned on the moon revolutionized hip-hop as we know it and expanded its emotional depth but it did so at a price and by the time that he was ready to release his fifth album speeding bullet to heaven cudi was in a dark place although it was praised by andre 3000 at the time elliott wilson of rap radar suggested that three stacks had definitely missed the mark this is a hot mess cudi fails miserably at living out his rockstar dream over 90 minutes that's right 90 minutes ugh these are terrible alternative rock tombs only playing pat's assist on the title track almost makes that one salvageable almost overloaded with guitar-oriented instrumentals the record features some of cuddy's most blatantly alarming lyrics i might go losing it and drive off of a cliff fall in the void and if i blow my brains out all over the scene that's madness curing sadness he proclaimed on confused but despite whatever pain he was in it didn't stop the album from prompting think pieces about art so bad it's irresistible which placed it in the league with such things as tommy wiseau's the room while anthony fantano famously gave the record a zero yet while everyone felt that he was struggling creatively the issues ran much deeper and in reality the record was hampered by issues in his personal life that he could no longer outrun i was dealing with some real during that album he wrote on twitter in november 2019 one of my darkest darker than man on the moon 2 i'd say i just wanted to scream and yell and make angry songs it was the only way i could express what i was feeling at the time contending with addiction issues that he would eventually seek assistance for in the lead up to his next project passion pain and demon slaying kid cudi has since bounced back and escaped the headspace of speed and bullets to heaven and across kids see ghosts with kanye west in 2021's man on the moon 3 he's experienced a complete return to form that any artist in the world would be undeniably proud of all of these records were reviled for different reasons the common ground between them isn't so much the album itself but what you do in the aftermath of the bad publicity that defines you and your legacy
