favorite artist of all time everybody does a bar and helps here's our problem we heard reference tracks of complete verses where they even said the breath and the way he delivered it and everything corporately that is the goat if you if he would have showed that he he's a hospitable person and now he's really in this for the culture taking my running off with it and then putting it on his album then he would have got my kudos to got my respect welcome back to hip hop madness i'm your host protogoat if this is your first time checking this out make sure to hit that subscribe button and notification bell so you don't miss our future rap videos just like this one but yeah enough of that let's get right into it we're artists such as eminem and jay-z are widely celebrated for shifting hip-hop's commercial boundaries drake has found himself with everything a man can want besides the love and support of a genre that he's helped elevate instead his pursuit of chart-topping has meant that his status in hip-hop comes with an asterisk beside it and when tracks such as the ready-made for tick-tock 2c slide made it to number one it isn't seen as evidence of hip-hop's dominance in a way that roddy rich's the box did but more so fuels the claims that dre cash traded in his hip-hop credentials for extreme mainstream acclaim however when discussing how drake has basically sabotaged his rap career it's important to remember that it's not a lack of skills but drake's decision making which has dented his status for starters drake's lack of transparency in who wrote what and when almost immediately disqualifies him from the rap goal position within a genre that thrives on authenticity meek mills claims that drake enlisted ghostwriter quentin miller to pin his verse on rico sent shockwaves to the hip-hop world commercially though the fallout from the news didn't impact drake and he's only gone from strength to strength to chart-topping phenomenon but in hip-hop circles it's a blemish that weighs heavy even after he emerged victorious from his beef with meek mill during a recent appearance on million dollars worth the game funflex explained how despite personally feeling that drake's talent outweighs jay-z's the stigma of a ghostwriting scandal and the fact that it wasn't an isolated incident has seriously hurt him drink is the biggest hit making cornball you know if those reference tracks would have never happened drake would have been my favorite artist of all time everybody does a bar and helps here's our problem we heard reference tracks of complete verses with it even said the breath and the way he delivered it and everything me and drake we practiced that verse in the room already he didn't need the blackberry because we practiced it in the room first with no blackberry so when the camera came out he pulled out the blackberry do you want to know why because as a rapper if you look at a guy with a blackberry you go oh he must have wrote those words taken solely in its context flex's anger over drake could be seen as just one man's opinion but when viewed in the larger scope of hip-hop it's consistent with the tendency to omit drake from top 5 conversations and for the most part this situation has been birthed from drake's own career moves that rightly or wrongly have always placed hits over upholding hip-hop tradition on drake's part his handling at a ghostwriting scandal just like many of the marks against them has only worsened things from a g jordan revealing all about ovo's intense songwriting camps to the weekend revealing that some tracks intended for his house of balloons project were re-designated for take care drake has went from denying any sort of co-conspiring with others to being forced to publicly justify his methods i've really made my peace i have no embarrassment when it comes to what i did on that album you know i mean i i worked with somebody uh on i think four or five songs on that record uh i pulled my weight it wasn't like i needed somebody to facilitate you know entire ideas we work together so i want to take a quick break to thank our friends at skillshare a unique service that stardom that focuses on entirely different measures of success dating back to 2013 drake was already striving to make pop singles that abandoned hip-hop's core audience speaking to mtv after the release of hold on we're going home drake revealed that it was an attempt to have a record that was played at weddings in 10 years or that people that are away from their families in the army could listen to something that just has timeless writing timeless melody but although this track was likely just an experiment the reception that the track received actually helped set a course for a more financially lucrative but ultimately less celebrated hip-hop career path and when you've put your all into a project only to be overshadowed by the man who's become hip-hop's crown prince what other recourse do you have than to follow the bag in october of 2012 a young dr dre protege by the name of kendrick lamar released his major label debut good kid mad city to the sort of widespread critical acclaim that even then had never happened in toronto's finest despite drake being featured on the project and giving it a boost commercially the praise that the album received in regards to its clarity and vision seemed to light a fire under drake and led him to create what he felt was his masterwork and response on nothing was the same the music i'm making is more concise more clear i've been able to get my thoughts across a lot better on this album he said of the project prior to its release take care is a great album but i listened to it and i realized where i could do better and i think i've done better on this album later in the wake of the project's release drizzy doubled down on championing the record that seemed above all else above all others like his baby i do have the best album of the year though i will say that i think i just have one of the best bodies of work of the year i worked hard on that thing man i like it yeah i'm proud of it but sure enough when macklemore was misguidedly awarded the best rap album at the grammys that year he didn't feel the need to text drake and apologize instead he publicly told kendrick lamar that he felt good kid matt city had been robbed enraging drake in the process and when drake had won that same grammy on his previous effort for a record that he saw as a subpar one in comparison logically the combination that appraised that kendrick received and the dismissal of his own attempt to make an enduring long-form statement told drake from there on out that he should scrap his pursuit of a classic and focus on catering to the lane where he excels at making trendy commercial music and even though he's the undisputed king of hits he's achieved this in a way that's further isolated them from hip-hop's faithful through what many see as drake's willingness to bite other rappers sounds or right other waves many fans and artists have reached the point where it's easy to admire what drake's achieved but a lot harder to like how he did it accused of stealing all of the uk grime sound to drums cha-cha beat the idea the canadian superstar underhandedly taking other artist sounds is generally regarded as another example of how he has no central identity other than that of a hitmaker but in the words of the late xxxtentacion who experienced drake's casual theft with his flow from look at me being turned into more life's kmt acknowledging drake's accomplishments and taking issue with his approach can happen simultaneously corporately that is the goat if you if he would have showed that he he's a hospitable person and that he's really in this for the culture taking my running off with it and then putting it on his album then he would have got my kudos to got my respect left feeling like the ovo leader takes without properly compensating artists he borrows from this unease about drake isn't confined to a new generation that's naturally rebelling against its elders or even sparked by drizzy's unwillingness to grow up gracefully instead it was a veteran at a game that managed to put the final nail in the coffin a drake's rap career as we know it and left them with no road back over the years drake had snuck enough street talk into his verses to suggest he wasn't the one to be tested from rhyming about catching a body like that and packing attack to engaging in verbal feuds with talented rappers that had less of an ability to control the narratives such as common and meek mill drizzy made it a decade into his career without a single l but in the wake of responding to pusha t on duppy freestyle and referencing his fiancee push basically disfigured entire pieces of drake's public persona beginning with his image as a romantic goal for women to depicting him as a deadbeat dad playing border patrol on his own child but as the window for drake to respond to story of added on came and went push's vicious pen strokes did something even greater it completely dispensed the notion of drake as anything close to untouchable in the view of joe budden the famine drizzy through this multi-angle approach was a chest move from pusha t as it left drake's fan base scrambling for answers how can drake fans ignore what push is saying they've ignored a lot they've ignored yeah you got pissed on you've been punched in the face you don't write your sh drake fans have been the blanket to smother a lot of the fire that has come his way this might be alley-oop though drake has modeled his career on being the perfect gentleman how do you strip someone of their female fan base this is how you do it yeah and this is the time to do it outmatched and outsmarted drake's eventual confession that he was caught slipping didn't just tell fans that even a mainstream icon could be taken down but told the artist where his strengths lay in the modern game and after spending years at the top drake ultimately forgot that in battle it all comes down to who has the most firepower but above all he committed the cardinal sin of getting emotional in a way that no other rapper in his position would have allowed themselves to i have no desire to ever mend anything with that person that situation just went you know it went it just went it just went where it went and it's just there is no there is no there is no turning back the information was too shocking there's a point where you're going to want to stop rapping that's just kind of where that's just kind of where i got to it through his words to rap radar and his assertion that there's no rules to this drake showed once and for all that despite his attempts to retain some sense of grounding in the genre that made his name or tap back into that section of the audience he was ultimately playing a different sport if he felt that there should be any room for remorse on pusha t's behalf when in reality everyone from jay-z to nas eminem 50 cent and ja rule have learned the hard way that if you're not prepared to fight fire with fire and think of the consequences for your public image later then hip hop simply isn't for you naturally drake's handling at a situation and the widespread mockery that came his way proved that even a pop superstar was no exception to the rule appointed as the goat by figures such as lil dicky takashi 69 that are often seen as enemies of hip-hop in their own right drake has found himself in a unique position to be in a genre's leading commodity and its sworn enemy all at once now as he prepares to unveil his sixth album the overall health of drake's brand in the mainstream is undisputable but with the tide of the public opinion turning against them if drake has any intention of amending his standing in hip-hop and being seen as the goat contender the project needs to represent more than billions of streams and instead of latching onto trends focusing on the financial upside or chasing the beatles chart toppers it has to recapture what it was that made him such a compelling rapper and not a pop star in the first place but what do you guys think did drake's chase for chart toppers and commercial appeal along with the use of ghost writers hinder his ability to ever be considered a real hip-hop rap great or do you think that hip-hop purists would have never considered him a goat no matter what let us know your thoughts in the comments section below once
