Why does Italy have 6000 Ghost Towns? (hidden Italy)

[Music] foreign when I think of Italy I think of its incredible culinary culture idyllic coastlines and awe-inspiring nature but there's a whole other side to this country I think few know about mostly in its southern region which has historically been dependent on agriculture hides 6 000 abandoned Villages ghost towns Forever Frozen in Time with the last generation who still remembers life inside of them still alive in a journey filled with questions we hope to explore four of them each with their own story with one in particular rumored to have a mysterious man refusing to leave we'll be searching for locals who remember the stories of these places in the hopes of capturing them before they become lost and forgotten forever to understand why these beautiful old towns are left abandoned and what their future holds I brought my most easily excited friend and stranger we met on the internet three years ago Stefan Taylor and Bernardo who were meeting for the first time to help us capture our story as my greatest enemy in life is keeping up with my emails and this episode required a lot of research to put together we've been experimenting with the sponsor of today's video Krakow s damn that's absolutely insane our first destination was a brief stop to the famous Ghost Town the Krakow after a series of landslides earthquakes and tough agricultural conditions in the region the town was slowly evacuated over time and eventually fully abandoned in 1972 when a flood worsened the already poor condition of the Town leading it to be left standing all alone to this day there's been a series of landslides and earthquakes so the town is literally falling off the cliff whoa where have you taken me man what have you taken me whoa they're donkeys what only donkeys left in this Ghost Town explore hey guys here's the major of the Town yeah hello hello is the secretary the defense department here's the Peace Department there is Tommy applying for citizenship excuse me so we're we're here to try to understand these abandoned villages in Italy and as the last inhabitants I was just it's so friendly and yeah I love animals shout out to animals shelter tall animals out there I think I've never seen a donkey before in real life what have I oh he's sucking on it that maybe sounds and this quick stop at our first ghost town all we found was crumbling buildings and a village lost forever as nature slowly reclaims the land so we eagerly moved towards our second village out of four to find the mysterious man who refused to leave his town once everyone else abandoned it oh my is this the entrance to it this looks abandoned wow this is the entrance of the town they built they built things to hold it together you see these metal bars there's a car hello there's a man that lives here right I said he's a legend he lives there oh no he's there okay see him yeah yeah he's here he looks like Santa Claus okay see hello yeah we'll park [Music] wait so Santa lives in an abandoned Village in Italy can we call him the legendary the guy goes he's a legend oh there he is good he literally is dressed like oh my God it's sent bonjourno hoping we would find this mysterious man we had arranged for a translator to come and help us communicate I could ask you why you ended up here today [Laughter] so the first of January uh 2001 it took a key of a building and he entered it just occupied and he lived in that deal with the the flag was the key used in the door or uh yeah they like yeah did he ever consider leaving when other people left or yeah normal disease universe for me just speaking about the the freedom you don't you don't own anything so you are free in the end the the things you own you if uh wow he's a philosopher basically yeah he's in line with the Christmas team so in December did she say that in December he dressed like Santa Claus does he have water yeah and he lived like that for like 20 years I asked him how do you do with the water in the toilet they say for the window just stay away from his house down the window is there anything we can get him right now I mean we have a car hey so we're taking we're going in the car with him yeah yeah yeah okay great okay change of plans he wanted uh cigars or cigarettes or tobacco I don't know so we're taking Santa on a road trip here we go safety first okay this way okay he's on our team right now looking at this will laugh because they know if they send me an email I'm likely to not respond and the reason for that is because I travel to a lot of remote places like this he lives and another part of it looks completely destroyed like here looks like bomb down almost during a war all of it has crumbled [Music] oh look this was an entire floor that's falling look there's a sink what [Music] it feels like we're in some italic Italian town like when you look at this yeah it's beautiful it really feels like you're an Italian town but then you forget that like no one is here it's a ghost town this is probably quite unsafe to be on the second floor yeah considering that everything else is falling apart I don't know exactly how I'm feeling while I'm here it's like a it's a weird feeling because you know you're inside someone's home but no one is here anymore you feel how peaceful it is I think living in a city you forget what true Quiet Sounds like abandoned places are usually eerie and spooky but this really feels peaceful and beautiful in some ways I can understand why you'd wanna stay here voice similar in case we're lighting up oh my God and this is it and there's there's no light like there's no electricity and this is doing this the last man standing of rochino [Music] foreign paintings of him clearly we're not the first to be interested in him and his story many people have come here and taken great photos of him that inspires me that yeah how he wants to live he decided to live like that and he stands for it that I will you thank you after finding and getting adopted by Our Mysterious elderly philosopher our third ghost town was to one left in a rush after an earthquake with much of it still standing we are one Visual and preserved of them all we were also extremely lucky to meet an old man who had been forced to leave the village many years ago to tell us about what this town was once like okay so we are just walking into this are you kidding me this is bizarre oh wow there are pictures of what the town used to look like there's a lot of people that lived here we'd go inside yeah this is so creepy I don't know why I just got nervous all of a sudden this is a marble staircase [Music] no what what [Music] 1932 wow [Music] 1987 newspaper apparently it was like a scientist to lived here this looks like some kind of science paper dated 1984. wow so he was a scientist wow this is a big house an incredible view videos [Music] [Music] foreign look at this you imagine the amount of memories here the building is um yeah you should walk in the middle because if you're too close to the walls something might fall down why did you decide to stay okay foreign [Music] foreign [Music] do you think a town like this will ever come back to life do you think anyone will ever come here because it has a charm right do you think anyone will ever come back here and think let's you know let's renovate this and turn it into something it's a good question I want to say yes but it feels so abundant then the hopes and the dreams is put somewhere else I used to Hope as well where the people live there that they're in a good place today I can't think about the people like where they are who they are and I used to wish that they are at good place wish that they are at a good place foreign [Music] because he said he was not going to leave the town and I think he still counts himself living there because he went to the closest point that's how I see it and yeah can really feel with him okay okay [Music] England [Laughter] after a first town in ruin a man of resilience and a man dedicated to keeping our past alive I want to take you to our special final stop that represents hope for a better future we are exploring the habitable Ghost Town it is Santos Stefano beautiful absolutely dreamy looking ghost town that they are bringing back to life as you can even hear around me there are literally rebuilding buildings all around us it really feels like going back in time we look at every every corner you turn around you know here they're rebuilding and then these buildings they've brought back and it's a after most of it was abandoned a Visionary man bought most of the village and decided to commit to making it livable once again 117 people moved back and many of the old houses have been transformed into hotel rooms other buildings were used for restaurants and common areas and we have been very lucky to be given an Executive Suite at one of these renovated homes yeah that sounds nice having stuff on with us feels like having a puppy around I'm happy puppy [Music] wow so we're sleeping here tonight Lobby I've ever seen [Music] welcome thank you nice to meet you it's your first time beautiful yes here it all started as a cultural project in the 90s okay to save the Village from the abandonment then we started with a what we call a preservative renovation project trying to maintain the original aspect of the buildings we then turned to uh Hospitality experience in 2005 to make it all sustainable this is our biggest group um a white job or blue one oh that's supposed to be the foreign I love this place yeah a place always comes with an Indescribable feeling and this video had such a peaceful one I'm happy boy the country of pasta from the quiet of the area to the careful attention to detail in the rebuild we truly had an incredible final day in the in this Village this was one of the best meals that we've ever had that was the best food you would have thought we'd have one of the best meals ever in a ghost town ultimately I think the hardest part of many abandoned places is that they symbolize the loss of hope they embody our failures and demonstrate that we've given up and moved on but with such charm Rich history and culture kids more permits be given and methods be shared for how to rebuild the old maybe I'm just being my usual hopeful Optimist wandering around with an illusion sense of potential in places like this but to have actually experienced one of them having done it successfully truly gave me hope for more to follow suit and a final
