thank you to shopify for sponsoring this video in 1976 a man named stamatis moriatis was in his mid-60s diagnosed with terminal lung cancer after being told he only had six months left to live he decided to move back to his hometown in greece he surrounded himself by his old community a local produce and even had a glass of wine here and there to enjoy his final days but as the years passed doctors were baffled as he kept living and he went on to live another 40 years until the age of a hundred forty-five years from then and i'm still thinking why not work now how on earth is that possible well strangely enough there are in fact five small towns around the world where this has been happening at an abnormally higher rate than anywhere else scientists have termed them blue zones and have spent decades trying to understand what they do differently to achieve longer lifespans one of them is in greece stamat is his hometown one is in japan one in costa rica and one in california but the original blue zone and the one with the most records is the one we will be visiting today off the coast of italy tucked away high in the mountains of the island of sardinia lies a hidden village called cewlo where this year alone out of the 800 residents six of them turned 100. so today we're heading to ceilo to try and discover for ourselves what this town's secret is to an extended life all right ladies and gentlemen we are smack in the middle of the island of sardinia we're gonna meet people who were in their late 20s when world war ii broke out isn't that crazy that is crazy tommy will be joining me on this trip as well as our cinematographer fen corey who has joined me on several big trips in the past we stayed in a hotel two hours away from the town last night and even the people working in the hotel didn't speak a word of english so i don't know how we didn't really think about the whole language barrier here it's okay because cory speaks fluent italian go ahead say something we're in the middle of nowhere dog yeah we really are oh have we arrived on like dirt road now wait wait way half the road is like have has crumbled into the valley slow down holy oh my god dust all everywhere that guy didn't speak a word he didn't even know how to say hello in english well this is going gonna be hard and after driving a few hours we finally saw it oh this is the town this is the town where people live the longest on the planet [Music] i'm seeing old people yes we're totally doomed all right first steps into town we're gonna get some food try to make some friends at the cafe get social hello [Music] not a single person speaks english but not even a word of english yeah do people drink wine here in the day yeah i guess i guess that's a yes somehow against most major health recommendations and common sense it's a really bad idea the locals in this town actually drink their locally made natural wine into old age it smells very fruity did we end up with a whole bottle i thought we were supposed to get a small glass we're just fitting in baby cheers to the beginning of our blue zone adventure we shall drink and eat what the centurions drink and eat and hopefully gain a few years [Music] oh my god this is the best pursuit i've ever had in my life by far i love this lady we've all adopted her as our local mom [Music] i don't think cory's ever coming back with us as we distracted the chef and delayed the people in the background from getting their food we continued our quest to explore the village in the search for its secrets you just walk by this random door and like you said people leave their keys in the door just so that if you need something you can just walk into the people's house there's another key right there the keys are in the door every other door actually has the keys you're just walking like time for a little nap what's your name perfect the locals here also apparently maintain a habit of two to three espressos and although we usually try to avoid alcohol when we're out on adventures the locals seem to have other plans yes it is okay he says this one is dangerous is this how people live here this makes no sense to me at all [Music] in cryptic french we found out that the village was having some form of celebration tonight serendipitously on our first night in town this guy insisted that we come to his house but doesn't speak a leg of english that's right but we think he likes us but we're not entirely sure that's it for taking us yeah i guess so many pictures of people that live over 100. [Laughter] i don't think so no i've not seen this man smile once he doesn't have to be our guide but he chooses to do so and he's pissed off about it oh wait anyone can come i will be the one who can dude you don't have to [Laughter] wow what nice to meet you corey nice to meet you would you like something to drink wine water he offered us some wine do people drink wine here during the day often yes all the time this makes no sense to me this is paradise the problem is what is he saying nothing that's what we figured [Music] i don't know what's going on we are being kidnapped by this town in the best way possible i have a feeling we're just going to end up getting drunk with a bunch of old people it's going to be the greatest thing ever there's 60 people that are in between 90 and 100 in this town nice to meet you you're from this town or you live here when you live in the big cities you can be alone also if there's a lot of people but here it's impossible and i went to relax and you were trying to relax and someone came to your house they came you speak english oh just now oh this guy's a freaking prankster he's like old mario this guy's 157 years old and within minutes of meeting more of the town we were literally adopted [Laughter] wow all the meat here is raised here it's all from here which obviously makes a huge difference and also they eat healthy stuff the animals [Music] as we are on our way to the centurion of the town i would like to tell you quickly about entrepreneurship and about the sponsor of this video shopify which is actually an e-commerce tool that we've been using for the past four years as we launched our own brand seek discomfort shopify's mission at the end of the day is to empower us as creators as entrepreneurs as artists to build our own stores online and it's truly changed our lives without see discomfort we will never be able to go on adventures like this and it feels amazing to be able to work with shopify and empower other people to potentially take their careers into their own hands an interesting fact that they told me is that in 2020 every 28 seconds a new entrepreneur made their first sale using shopify for many people the most daunting part about entrepreneurship is the gap between our ideas and our technical ability to make them happen and shopify completely strips that down by making building your own e-commerce platform so seamless and so simple for anyone to be able to do it themselves so if you are an artist entrepreneur creator of any kind click the link in the description below for a 14-day free trial it's truly changed our lives and we hope it will change yours now let's go meet this hundred-year-old it's my first 100 year old plaster i mean in my life have you ever met someone over 100. i'm not we have a translator here we're going to ask her what is the secret to living to 100. [Music] that my grandmother tells me that you are very good friend and good boy is she your grandmother no no my mother not my mother my mother she's your mother yes she's healthy she's good many times the memory but she is very independent yeah and my mother always when he was she was younger in the head if 100 kilos of [Music] in 1968 my grandmother was the first women in seoul that like over 100. wow after there are i think 30 29 people person wow and do you guys do you know why look yeah look come here she was doing this yeah always when she was 96 yeah she was still doing this garden with a man this is a muscle oh my god yeah having a function and being active is like a huge part of why like she's 96 and she's still taking care of their garden she's very worried because we didn't invite you to drink something oh that's so sweet oh my god as we were trying to stay sober to further our investigation of their lifestyles we continued getting roped into more bad decisions it was a beer [Music] and this isn't a grandmother whoa it's like you're there yeah how old was she wow so her mother lived to 102. you're going to live [Music] she said that didn't drink [Music] met our first 100 year old thank you so much our disgruntled guide is here [Laughter] andrea give him a hug oh we're homies it's my favorite guide i've ever had it's worked out a million times better than i expected got into the town we met people who spoke english an amazing lunch met more locals went to the village center met the rest of the village met the oldest person in the town now are invited to the village festival going in with no plan is just the best kind of get more and more why people live to be a hundred it's a strong community they eat everything they grow and then they just laugh and they you know screw around like in my building that i live in i've like said hi to my neighbors but i i don't i've never talked to them in a full conversation here it's you like your identity is a part of the town and the town is a part of you [Music] i guess we're having dinner us in the town there's nobody else the town in us let's meet some friends [Music] we're trying to figure out how you live so long it's the wine water they're like what are you doing wow oh my god [Music] as the locals love to dance and have their specific traditional ones they do together to finalize our adoption into this town we had to learn them and once they got started they never stopped [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] oh [Music] after a wildly unexpected night of partying in this village we spent the next few days in seoul trying to deepen our understanding of this special place discovering its vast beauty and getting closer to the people living there no no it's impossible it is impossible okay and you guys love pineapple one pizza here right now [Music] [Laughter] only one possibility this and what we realized is that the secret to the extended lives of people in these towns is that the people of solo haven't discovered anything new but they have simply perfected the basic aspects of a healthy lifestyle that we already know eating a diet of fresh seasonal and locally sourced food having active lifestyles even into old age and living in an area with no pollution are all a part of it but i think the true secret is their simple enjoyment of life so many of us myself included are striving to reduce stress and anxiety in everyday life in a day and age where things move faster than ever it can be hard sometimes to slow down and enjoy the smaller things the locals of sardinia however seem to be unaffected by this they enjoy the slow little moments in every day and are at the same time spontaneous and vibrant enjoying whatever the day throws at them company this with their friendly inviting culture and a strong sense of family and community in their tight-knit town these people are living proof that the happier you are the longer you live
