what's going on with ichigo's zangetsu in the hell chapter in the Thousand-Year blood War Arc Ichigo reforges his zanpakto creating the true zangetsu now split into two blades the longer sword representing the fusion of his Shinigami and Hollow Powers while the shorter sword represents his Quincy Powers according to Kubo all zanak toe must have both a sword and a sheath but Ichigo zangetsu famously never had the latter now though the smaller blade acts as the sheath as well when Ichigo activates banai he merges The Sword and the sheath wrapping his true power in a white outer casing during their final Clash uabar destroys the sheath however Kubo revealed Ichigo reabsorbed the pieces of his broken Scabbard this means he can now choose to Showcase his power however he'd like whether it's the dual blades or The Sword and the sheath combined into one as we see currently in the hell chapter
