in this video I'll evaluate and compare these 13-inch planers and we'll find out which one is okay who am I kidding everybody thinks the DeWalt is better but why and is it really worth the extra cost the win is a pretty good option so let's Dive In adjusting the depth of cut is what you do most frequently with the planer so let's start there both the wind and the wall work in a pretty similar way turn a crank to adjust and the mechanism on how it works is not dissimilar as well in both planers it's a chain system making use of four screw posts and note that it is four posts in both of these planers which is better than some of the cheaper planers that have only two posts even though I don't very frequently use the depth stops or the depth gauge it's worth taking a look to compare to calibrate the depth stops in both cases it's an inner process of turning a simple set screw while doing test cuts on the thing until the thickness is dialed in and note that the calibration screw for the win is hidden behind this little panel it's a little hard to find and while I was at it I also calibrated the depth gauge on both I think I like the win a little bit better because it has a magnifying glass and I'm old and don't see very well so aside from the depth stops and the depth gauges might for most frequent way to set the depth is just stick in a work piece a little bit and see about how much is going to be taken off and adjust accordingly both planers have this depth indicator Works in a similar way but the wind is just a single point in the center while the DeWalt indicator runs most of the width of the infeed definitely better dust collection something of a must when you're using a planer otherwise these chips go everywhere but more importantly you don't want them hanging out in here where they could potentially get between your work piece and the table or the rollers and affect the quality or the thickness of the cut my dust collection hose quick connect fitting doesn't fit the DeWalt I thought I had a pretty standard size no worries I just attached the hose directly also worth noting is that I noticed a few more straight chips that got left behind with the DeWalt when compared to the win let's talk about noise both of these planers are really loud and I'd really recommend wearing near protection I don't know which one is louder my neighbors might have an opinion but I'm afraid to ask overall construction quality I believe is similar between the two probably the DeWalt feels a little bit better but I can't really articulate why I saw someone stand on a DeWalt recently to demonstrate how strong it is but since I just borrowed this DeWalt from a friend I'm not going to take that chance but the win planer is mine so I will stand on it this thing is pretty solid both planers have in-feed and outfeed tables that are adjustable and they work in a similar way and you want them adjusted tilting up just a little bit to help reduce snipe what are those rollers on top for anyway I guess if you have two people working on the machine together you roll the work piece back across for the next pass yeah I wish I had somebody to help me in the wood shop feature by feature these planers are pretty similar but now let's discuss cutter configuration cutting speed quality of cut which is where these planers are really different the DeWalt has three straight blades each one 13 inches long and the wind has 26 straight blades each of them a half inch long wait are they straight or are they spiral they're straight just like the DeWalt but they're just shorter and they're mounted in six rows in a spiral pattern I think sometimes helical gets mixed up with spiral and these are not helical this planer comes with high-speed steel Cutters which are pretty sharp to start with but they do get dull I found these aftermarket carbide Cutters online for a pretty affordable price they aren't sold by win and they aren't even specifically labeled to work with this planer but they do fit this planer perfectly the option to install a longer life carbide cutter is definitely an advantage compared to the DeWalt as well as if a single cutter gets damaged it's only about two dollars to replace it and six rows of Cutters sounds pretty good but actually there's only one cut per revolution of the cutter head compared to the DeWalt which has three Cuts per cutter head Revolution and that translates to a pretty significant difference between these two planers in terms of cuts per inch even at the same feed rate not to mention that the DeWalt has the option to go to a slower feed rate and increase Cuts per inch even more so let's do some test guides to evaluate quality of cut and see if the spiral configuration of the wind can it all make up for the fewer Cuts per inch I've got four pieces to use for the test a piece of pine with some simple benign grain a piece of birch mostly with straight grain but a small amount of figurine a piece of maple with some really significant figurine and the grain changing directions a lot and a piece of Walnut with a moderate amount of figurines some grain Direction variation so these are some really challenging pieces for any planer I start with making all of the cuts on the DeWalt in the slow speed setting 179 Cuts per inch really shallow cuts only about a 60 1 64 of an inch the results are really impressive the pine and Birch are really nice perfect finishes the difficult piece of maple isn't perfect smoothness but really no chipping which is pretty impressive and the Walnut is pretty much an awesome result so I noted down these results and I'll loop back into a summary comparison in a minute and then I moved on to do the test on the DeWalt at the fast setting 96 Cuts per inch this might be a good time to mention that this video is not sponsored by either DeWalt or when I borrowed this DeWalt planer from a good friend of mine just for the purpose of this evaluation and I bought the winplaner myself about 18 months ago and I use it all the time so the results from the fast speed through the DeWalt planer is that the pine and Birch are still really good as good as you'd expect from any planer the maple had some significant chipping not a very good result but perhaps expected giving the figurine in this piece of Maple and the Walden is still really good and so let's move on to run the tests on the win I run the same four pieces through the win planer again taking just about a sixty-fourth of an inch off the pine and Birch have a really good result as expected no challenge for any planer the maple does have some chipping different from the DeWalt on from the wind it's a bunch of really small pits whereas the DeWalt chipping was kind of a couple of big chips taken out and the wind handled the Walnut with a really good result even despite the grain variation so here's a simple summary of the results it seems the win and DeWalt are similar when the DeWalt is set at the fast feed rate setting or the 96 Cuts per inch but the DeWalt really excels at the slower feed rate 179 Cuts per inch even able to plane a really difficult piece of figured Maple with good results I checked the thickness after each cut to look for consistency both across the width of the work piece as well as in the end and for both planers it's spot on I also inspected for snipe after each cut and didn't really notice any difference between the two planers both have very minimal snipe marks almost unnoticeable regardless of the planer my experience is that using a sled is really the best way to completely get rid of snipe but maybe that's a subject for a whole nother video okay so here's my notes feature by feature there's really not much difference between these two planers the slower feed rate option of the DeWalt is truly a differentiator gives better quality for all cuts and especially the ability to plan work pieces with really difficult grains and like I said earlier for some reason it has a feeling that it's a little better designing construction although I can't really put my finger on what it is about it that feels better so besides the obvious advantage that the wind has a lower cost machine there's the option to get carbide Cutters with a longer life and if you do Nick or damage a cutter you're only replacing that one cutter and not the whole set and overall the quality of cut is really pretty good with the win thanks so much for watching and if you think I've earned it it'd be great if you hit that thumbs up like button and consider subscribing
