sha hey guys hope you're all doing well like I said in the title this video is going to talk about this symbol one of the most disputed and ambiguous sounds in the IPA its main and almost sole purpose is to transcribe a particular sound in Swedish commonly known as the SJ sound orud in Swedish a sound represented by a variety of graph themes but commonly associated with either SJ or scj or some other variation here's some examples first some things I want to briefly mention first this is my first Linguistics video I've had a lot of fun making it but some of the audio is kind of like I don't know so bear with that to so please inform me of any corrections in the comment section down below anyway this symbol is bad but the sound it so often represents is great and it's what forms the basis of this famous tongue booster or seven beautifully singing nurses took care of seven C6 seen on the ship Shanghai the EP defines the symbol as a qu articulation between sha and which is the sound I made all the way at the beginning of the video sha however according to a variety of sources this cortication has never been attested in any language instead the major dialect groups of Swedish pronounce as one of broadly shaa sometimes with labialization showing that none of the main dialects reflect the IP's definition of the symbol here's some examples of Swedish people saying the sound although I haven't found any sources claiming that the IPA uses the symbol strictly for the transcription of Swedish is SJ sound an overwhelming majority of Swedish documents use the symbol to transcribe it like bro this is wild literally the Wikipedia one has SJ sound in parenthesis because it's pretty much its only function if evidence were to present that a language would have a phic cortication between Shan it should then merely be transcribed with the cortic bar in my opinion there's no intrinsic reason to have a dedicated symbol for aord articulation even cha one of the most common ones doesn't have its own symbol so one for a core circulation whose presence can barely be accounted for seems slightly dubious additionally I quickly wish to mention that even across different dialects broad transcription still conforms to dialectal phones for example British English May transcribe the second vowel in comma as while Irish English tend to transcribe it as this fou anyway back to this symbol I'd say it violates one of the IP's core goals and purported facts of its same the international fanatic Association claims on its website that it provides the academic Community worldwide with a notational standard for The Fanatic representation of all languages which the IPA admittedly does a pretty good job of but that's exactly its fault when it comes to the symbol the IPA aims to provide phonetic representations of language not phic ones AKA contrasts or distinctions at this point the symbols become a tool pretty much just to transcribe Swedish is phic as J sound a single phum in a single language though the AP does add new symbols when proven to be significantly used they are only added if there is no simple or conventional way to notate them for example the keil convention of 1989 added the bilabial TR symbol due to its occurrence in some bantoid and oceanic languages and the inability to efficiently notate it by means of diacritics or super segmentals the KE convention also removed the symbol for the chck voiced alv fra of Trilla on the grounds that they could be represented with accepted diacritics similar to what could be done with this is why it sounds like voiceless nasals like though found phonically in some languages do not have their own symbols and are rather notated with the voice of di critic out of Simplicity the only argument against this is the existence of the alvolo palal fictives Sha and J which can be represented like this though these are at least accurately defined and used in a wide array of languages rather than just one pretty much this symol place in the IP demands some reconsideration it doesn't accurately reflect the diverse range of pronunciations of the SJ sound and ultimately symbols shouldn't be used to provide phic definitions in a fanatic alphabet has created far too much controversy and is a step in the wrong direction to the course of the IPA thanks for watching if you want to see more videos on other Linguistics topics please give your suggestions in the comment section down below and I'll see what I can do it's been a lot of fun making this so we'll see bye and have a great day
