welcome to step by step a video Bible study series presented by the Monta Vista Church of Christ in Phoenix Arizona who is the holy spirit that is a common question asked by religious folks today you asked many religious people who the Holy Spirit is and some will say that that he's some mysterious indefinable substance that that permeates the universe others say that he's merely the mind or the disposition of God and still others say that he's nothing more there's some active force of God these are some of the common things you may hear sad about the Holy Spirit in our time today but the question is what is the truth what does the Bible teach what does the Bible tell us about the identity of the Holy Spirit well in this particular video I want to share with you I want to share with you a few important things that the Scriptures teach us about the Holy Spirit and the first thing is this the first thing we know about the Holy Spirit is according to the Bible the Holy Spirit goes by several different names like God the Father and like God the Son Jesus Christ in the scriptures we find the Holy Spirit going by several different names for example he goes by the Holy Spirit he goes by the Holy Ghost he goes by the Spirit of Truth and the comforter in John chapter 16 he goes by the Spirit of God in Genesis chapter 1 and he goes by the Eternal Spirit and Hebrews chapter 9 the Holy Spirit has several different names that are given to him in the scriptures and the second thing we need to know about the Holy Spirit is is the Holy Spirit it is a person he's a person now when I say he's a person I don't mean he's a human being like you and I but I do mean that he has all of the qualities and characteristics of a personhood and personality I do me that he is a stinked member of what is referred to as the Godhead we learn about this in Genesis chapter 1 in Genesis chapter 1 and verse number 26 in the beginning when God created mankind it says in Genesis 1 verse 26 then God said let us notice us plural let us make man in our image according to our likeness and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth notice how here in this verse God refers to himself as us that is not just God the Father but God the Son and God the Holy Spirit all three were present in the beginning in fact all three had a part to play in and the creation we find the Holy Spirit as early as Genesis 1 in verse number 2 when the Bible says the earth was formless and void and darkness was over the surface of the deep and the Spirit of God that's the Holy Spirit the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters here we learn that the Spirit of God or the Holy Spirit was used by God the Father he was used by God the Father in the creation to to make the earth and all that is in it as we continue with our our New Testament we will get to the New Testament we find the Holy Spirit mentioned in Hebrews 4 word verse number 30 there the Apostle Paul says that the Holy Spirit grieves he's able to hurt feel emotional pain particularly in this case whenever we sin against God in 1st Timothy 4 verse 1 Paul says that the Holy Spirit speaks and then you go to Hebrews 9 in verse 14 and we learned that he is eternal that is like God the Father and God the Son Jesus the Holy Spirit has always existed and he will always exist and then we go over to John the sixteenth chapter and Jesus makes a very clear here that the Holy Spirit is a person in John 16 in verse number 12 when talking to the Apostles and preparing them for his departure he says in John 16 in verse 12 I have many more things to say to you but you cannot bear them now but when he the spirit of truth comes he will guide you into all the truth for he will not speak on his own initiative but whatever he hears he will speak and he will disclose to you what is to come he will glorify me for he will take of mine and will disclose it to you all things that the father has are mine therefore I said that he takes of mine and will disclose it to you my dear friends notice how in these four verses at least 10 times Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as he he's referred to as a he that is he is a person he is someone who has all the qualities of personhood and personality Jesus says that he was going to send the Holy Spirit to help guide and comfort and and show the Apostles the truth that the father wants all mankind to know and so the Holy Spirit is a person but this does bring us to a third thing the Scriptures teach about the Holy Spirit and that is the Holy Spirit is the revealer of the gospel he is the one who has revealed to us the the Word of God that's what Jesus says here in John 16 and the Apostle Paul also says this in Ephesians chapter 3 in Ephesians chapter 3 beginning with verse number 3 as the Apostle Paul speaks to the Christians and Ephesus he says that by revelation there was made known to me the mystery as I wrote before in brief but referring to this when you read you can understand my insight and to the mystery of Christ which in other generations was not made known to the sons of men as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets in the spirit here we learn from the Apostle Paul that the Holy Spirit was the one who revealed God's will to the other apostles and prophets the Holy Spirit is the one who revealed both the Old Testament and and the New Testament and that means that like God the Father and like God the Son Jesus the Holy Spirit also plays a critical part in our salvation while Jesus is the one who died on the cross for our sins we would not know about the Lord Jesus and his sacrifice if we're not for the revelation given by the Holy Spirit missile the Holy Spirit is involved in the work of Revelation but not only is he involved in the work of a revelation a fourth thing we need to know about the Holy Spirit is he's also involved in the work of of confirmation the Holy Spirit revealed the Word of God and the Holy Spirit also confirmed the Word of God we see this in Hebrews chapter two and Hebrews chapter two beginning with verse number two the Apostle Paul says for if the word spoken through angels proved unalterable and every transgression and disobedience received a just penalty how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation after it was first spoken through the Lord it was confirmed to us by those who heard God also testifying with them both by signs and wonders and various miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit according to his will here we learned at the Holy Spirit not only revealed the Word of God to the apostles and the prophets but he also confirmed the Word of God how did he confirm the Word of God well he confirmed it by giving me like Paul and Peter and John and James the ability to perform miracles the ability to do supernatural things to confirm that the things they were speaking were in fact revelation from God and so the Holy Spirit revealed the Word of God and he confirmed it and someone may ask the question was the Holy Spirit still confirming God's Word today is he still giving men the ability to perform miracle my friends the answer to that question is no when you read first Corinthians chapter 13 you see that after God's Word was fully revealed after the work of Revelation was complete then the work of confirmation would be done away with as well the miraculous gifts needed to to confirms God's Word they would no longer be needed once the Holy Spirit had finally revealed all the truth and so the Holy Spirit gave miracles skills to confirm the Word of God but then a final thing we need to know about the Holy Spirit is this the Holy Spirit also dwells in Christians today he dwells in the people of God even today I'm going to Roman's the eighth chapter in in Romans chapter 8 and verse number 11 the Apostle Paul says but of the spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells and you he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his spirit who dwells in you here Paul says the Holy Spirit dwells and Christians and it's important to to put what Paul says here with what he also says in Romans chapter 1 in verse 11 in Romans 1 in verse 11 Paul told those in Rome that he longed to see them so that he could impart miraculous spiritual gifts to them this church in Rome had no miraculous gills at the time in which Paul wrote them this letter and yet even though they didn't have a ranking of spiritual gills Paul says in Romans 8 they still had the Holy Spirit dwelling in them and so here we see that the Holy Spirit dwells in Christians even though there are no miraculous spiritual gifts today and ultimately the Holy Spirit dwells in Christians through the inspired word in which he has revealed and so what I just want you to see from this short video is while there is a lot of confusion about the Holy Spirit in our society today the Bible tells us the truth the Bible tells us who the Holy Spirit is and let us thank God every single day for the gift of his spirit
