this is a production of world video Bible School to God be the glory perhaps one of the most misunderstood subjects in the religious world today is the holy spirit and it's misunderstood not only by the denominational world but also by many in the Lord's Church and among Christians there are a lot of questions and their minds about how the Spirit dwells in us what does John chapter 3 mean when it says that we must be born of the Spirit and what is the gift of the Spirit in Acts chapter 2 and do we still receive that gift today now while we certainly can't answer all of those questions in this lesson what we want to do today is to provide some introductory material to help us answer the question who is the Holy Spirit the study of the Holy Spirit is known as pneumatology it is spelled with a silent P it is pneumatology and the reason it's called that is because the Greek word for spirit is Numa thus pneumatology this particular Greek word for spirit can be translated as wind sometimes it's translated as breath but most of the time it is translated as spirit now it can be spirit with a lowercase s referring to the human spirit or it can be spirit with an uppercase s referring to the Spirit of God the third member of the Godhead now as we seek to answer the question who is the holy spirit we're going to cover three points number one his person number two his position and then finally we're going to talk about his role number one let's talk about the person of the Holy Spirit I saw on Facebook one day where a man had posted I am thankful for the Holy Spirit and how it empowers me well friends the Holy Spirit is is not an it in fact it's very important that we understand that the spirit has personage he has personal characteristics and attributes some people think of the Holy Spirit as an elusive force or some mysterious influence or or even some substance that emanates from the Father but I want you to listen how Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit in John 16:13 he says however when he the Spirit of Truth has come he will guide you into all truth for he will not speak of his own authority but whatever he hears he will speak I want you to notice that Jesus spoke of the Holy Spirit as a person and he uses the personal pronoun he in fact when you read some of the characteristics of the Holy Spirit it helps you appreciate that he has personage just like God the Father and just like Jesus Christ the son for instance the Holy Spirit has a mind romans 8 27 he speaks john 16:13 he teaches john 14:26 he testifies acts 20 23 he bears witness John 15:26 with respect to his personal reactions he can be grieved Isaiah 63 10 he can be tested acts 5 9 which then brings us to our second point we see that he has personal but what about his position friends the position of the Holy Spirit is that of deity he is God in Acts chapter 5 in verse 3 Peter asked Ananias why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit that in verse 4 he says you have not lied to men but to God you see the Bible identifies the Holy Spirit as God he is deity now I know this is a very basic thing but some people don't understand the fact that there are three members of the Godhead they are God the Father Jesus Christ the Son and God the Holy Spirit the comforter the helper now I want to look at the Bible we're gonna look at four passage that established very clearly this idea of the Godhead the first one is acts 17 and verse 29 now this is the Apostle Paul he's speaking on Mars Hill in Athens he says being then the offspring of God we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold or silver or stone graven by art and device of man now the New King James Version instead of saying Godhead says the divine nature but it's talking about the distinct personages the personalities of the Godhead now a second passage is Colossians chapter 2 and verse 9 speaking about Christ for in him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily and of course the point of the passage is that Jesus Christ is deity everything that it means to be God dwelt in him the third passage is Matthew 28 and verse 19 this is Jesus speaking to his apostles he's giving them the Great Commission he says go therefore and make disciples of all the nations baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit here he names all three persons of the Godhead God Christ and the Holy Spirit now the fourth passage is second Corinthians chapter 13 and verse 14 the Apostle Paul closes the book of second Corinthians with these words the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all amen and all three members of the Godhead listen very carefully all three members of the Godhead should be referred to as persons of the Godhead each member God Christ and the Holy Spirit is a divine person each possesses divine nature and let me emphasize this there's only one god there's only one divine nature but there are three distinct personalities now this is important when we understand the Holy Spirit because some people think the Holy Spirit is an elusive force or a mysterious influence or a substance that emanates from the father and Friends that is absolutely incorrect he is deity alright point number 3 this is where we're going to spend the majority of our time we want to talk about the role of the Holy Spirit just as there are three distinct personalities of the Godhead there are also three distinct roles within the Godhead each member of the Godhead has his own respective work and function to perform and all of their works fit perfectly together to accomplish their goal now since our present study is the Holy Spirit I want for you to consider with me the work of the Holy Spirit during the period of creation now friends all three members of the Godhead were involved in the creation of this world and each of them had a different role that He fulfilled first lists established that each member of the Godhead was involved in the creation in Genesis chapter 1 and verse 1 the Bible says in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth now if all we had was an English Bible we might conclude that God alone created the heavens and the earth but the word for God in this verse is Elohim and that particular word can be singular or it can be plural depending on the context and so we keep reading and we learned that the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters we keep reading we get to verse 26 God said let us make man in our image after our likeness and so the words us and our tell us that God was not alone when he created the world now this fact is further confirmed by the Apostle John in John chapter 1 and verse 1 when he wrote in the beginning was the word and the Word was with God and the Word was God he was in the beginning with God all things were made through him and without him nothing was made that was made and so we start to learn something about the role of the Father in creation friends God the Father was the designer of the creation he determined the extent and the order of creation but we also see that Christ the word was the one who actually carried it out I think this will be borne out further as we continue to study the role of the other two members of the Godhead God the Father was the designer it was his plan and so what was the role of Christ Jesus Christ was the execute or the executor now we just noticed all things were made through him and without him was not anything made that was made listen to this same thing in Colossians chapter 1 verses 15 through 17 verse 15 says about Christ he is the image of the invisible God the firstborn over all creation verse 16 says all things were created through him and for him the Hebrews writer says God who at various times and in various ways spoke in times past to the father's by the prophets has in these last days spoken to us by his son whom he has appointed heir of all things listen to this through whom also he made the world's Hebrews 1 verses 1 and 2 and so the father is the designer of the creation Jesus Christ was the executor the executor of the creation and number three the Holy Spirit was the the finisher or the completer the beautifier after the earth had been created the Bible says that it was waste and void and darkness was upon the face of the deep and the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters God then said let there be light and there was light now friends here the work of the Holy Spirit began we might say that the Holy Spirit made order out of chaos he was the the finisher he was the completer job says it this way job 26 and verse 13 by his spirit he adorned the heavens psalm 104 and verse 30 says it this way you send forth your spirit they are created and you renew the face of the earth and so in creation God the Father was the designer of the order of creation Christ the word was the executor the executor of God's plan and the Holy Spirit was the finisher the beautifier of the things that had been created now before we move on to the next point I really want to emphasize that one of the characteristics of the Godhead his order and system God has always operated in a systematic procedure which scholars refer to as divine economy each member of the Godhead had his own particular function in the creation of this world now I want you to hold that thought and let's add this one each member of the Godhead also had his own particular role and function in the scheme of redemption now what is the scheme of redemption it is God's plan for saving man with reference to the scheme of redemption somebody put it this way he said the father wrought it the son bought it and the Holy Spirit taught it now let's be more specific with regard to the scheme of redemption God the Father wrought it that was his role just as in creation he was the originator of the plan he wrought it now the word raw is an archaic word it means worked or prepared if we wanted to use a more modern word but maintain our rhyme we might say that the father thought it that means it was his plan he's the designer of it consider this verse John 3:16 for God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son friends this verse implies that the scheme of redemption was conceived in the mind of God you know it's also interesting in Isaiah 53 and verse 11 the text says about God the Father that he sees the sacrifice of Christ on the cross and the text says this he shall see the true avail of his soul and be satisfied now what does that mean the implication is that he God the Father is the designer of the plan God's plan was to design and produce a system whereby mankind could be justified that is forgiven of his sins and that plan involved a perfect sacrifice made on their behalf well what was the role of God the Son in the scheme of redemption well Jesus Christ bought it we say that is he is the executor he is the executor of the plan he became the sacrifice envisioned in the mind of God the Father he bought it what we mean by that is he paid the price for sin Hebrews chapter 2 and verse 9 says that he tasted death for every man revelation 5:9 says that he redeemed us by his blood Ephesians 3 and verse 9 speaking about the gospel says which from the beginning of the ages has been hidden in God who created all things through Jesus Christ - the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places according to the eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord this verse tells us that it was the Father's plan that we see his wisdom in the church that this plan was accomplished in Jesus Christ Christ was the executor of the plan well what was the role of the holy spirit Prince Tirol of the Holy Spirit we say is that he taught it he was the revealer the finisher the completer now what do we mean by that well even though Christ had died to redeem man there was still much work to be done and so before Jesus died he told his followers in John 14:16 and I will pray the father and he will give you another helper that he may abide with you forever the Spirit of Truth then in verse 26 he says the helper the Holy Spirit whom the father will send in my name he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you and so the father wrought it or we could say thought it the son bought it the Holy Spirit taught yet friends the primary work of the Holy Spirit was to give us the Bible he taught us the pattern that we follow today in religion again jesus told his disciples he will teach you all things 2nd Peter 1:21 says for prophecy never came by the will of man but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit and so the Holy Spirit is a revealer he is the giver of the divine pattern he miraculously guided men into all truth he guided them to write the New Testament he was the giver of the Bible and until that pattern until the Bible was completed he provided miraculous revelation so that they would know what to do in the meantime until the perfect completed Word of God was done but after the New Testament was completed he ceased the miraculous revelations and miracles first Corinthians 13 8 through 13 French you know the wisdom of God is beautifully illustrated in the work of the Holy Spirit and the ways he revealed the word ask yourself this question why didn't the Holy Spirit just cause copies of the New Testament to be written and handed out on the day Pentecost you know if it had been done that way men wouldn't have had a proper appreciation and application for it but you see instead of doing it that way what was done was that inspiration was given in parts as circumstances and needs arose and then a proper application and understanding of the truth could be made the work of the father was that of the originator the creator the designer of the plan the work of the son was that of the execute or the executor and the work of the Holy Spirit was that of the finisher his job was not to a truth but to communicate truth Jesus said the Spirit would not speak from his own authority but whatever he hears he will speak and he will tell you things to come John 16:13 and so today the tool through which he operates is the Word of God friends that's Ephesians 6:17 take the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God that is the tool of the Holy Spirit the Word of God who is the Holy Spirit he is deity he's the third member of the Godhead what is his role he's the revealer of the message the father designed it the son executed it and the Holy Spirit revealed it Titus chapter three and verse five says that God saved us through the washing of regeneration and the renewing of the holy spirit now let's apply the roles of each member of the Godhead to that verse first the father saves us because it's his plan secondly we are washed and regenerated by the son by the blood of Jesus Christ in the waters of baptism and thirdly we have a renewal of the Holy Spirit as we comply with the message that he revealed it is his word it is the new testament you
