Where to Stay in Hawaii: Hotels vs Vacation Rentals (What is best in Hawaii?)

Hotel brisk occasionally what is the best place to stay in Hawaii I am Erica and I'm Jordan and we're from the Hawaii vacation guide and this is our video to answer that very question for you plus we're gonna tell you what island you should just skip the area B's and vacation rentals on and go straight to the hotels if you want to save money [Music] good morning Ralph in Kona country right now sand it's amazing Airbnb where blues gonna copy is growing so this chickens up front and here the roosters crowing like crazy when it's cute the one bedroom one bedroom uh fly right here I'm bedroom apartment I have Hattie with me help me brew my coffee this I feel like will be a long-standing debate forever it's the great debate do you stay in a hotel or do you stay in a vacation rental when you come to Hawaii so it's it's gonna depend right but we tried to break this down into five main buckets so we're going to be looking at cost amenities location consistency and space and solitude stay with us people 5-inch are topics by five areas and we're gonna tell you whether hotel ones or whether Airbnb wins vacation rentals like in fun fact seventy percent of people stay in hotels when they come to Hawaii that was the average in 2019 so most people go with hotels so maybe watch this video to figure out why you should stay in a vacation rental maybe that would be better for you or why the majority no I just don't think people know yeah just don't know how good vacation rentals are we don't see eye to eye we're gonna go straight into cost because I feel like that is one of the big factors when you're planning a trip out to Hawaii right a trip to Hawaii is not cheap not cheap thousands of dollars in accommodations are gonna be your biggest line-item yeah yeah by far more than flights even yeah it is it is it is crazy how expensive they are so on average your vacation rental is going to be 10% cheaper and this is using data from the Hawaii Tourism Authority all these stats are from Hawaii Tourism Authority it's great they do they actually survey 8% over 80% of hotels on Islands till I get all this data about average cost per night how long people stay all this stuff it's all available for us yeah so vacation rentals you're saving about 10% when you compare it to a hotel room so compare you can also compare between classes so mid-range hotel mid-range vacation rental you're gonna see about a 10% difference but that's not considering the parking fees and resort fees that you make it charged when you stay at a hotel yeah and those can be like for parking right be like 30 to 40 dollars a night for in their resort for you so much ours our fees I mean they can go up about $40 a night which is yeah there goes your economics there your savings like another hundred dollars so the 10% gap then just grows so for cost yes a big winner here invocation Royals can sing in other ways too not just a the rate per night yeah so if you are traveling with family maybe you get a two bedroom vacation rental for the price of one yeah totally or you can do like saying a two-bedroom a lot of vacation rentals have a fold-out couch so you get really three couples and one vacation route if you really want to go thrift it yeah plus you're not eating out for all of your meals you have a kitchen in your vacation rental and so you can cook breakfast maybe some lunches and then be a little bit more discerning about when and where you eat out and that's huge right because like what I always recommend to friends and family is right when you get off the plane as you go to Costco there's a Kasich won every island Allah who has three of them go to Costco you get stocked up in your vacation rental you save a ton of money because groceries in Hawaii are expensive check out our other video on the cheapest groceries in Maui relates all diamonds yeah so cost hands down occasionally except and we talked about this in the intro there is one island one island where vacation rentals are more expensive than hotels emmalin i was shocked also is quiet yeah so cost there it's to be honest it's only about a $10 at night difference Vicky sure those are about ten dollars a night more expensive than a hotel so it just depends almost always a vacation rental it's going to be better cost wise wise only island that you know it's more money for a vacation rental yeah you might want to skip the vacations oh look at the beautiful hotels if they have quirks shake those schalke another thing you are concerned about when you come to Hawaii is the pool mm-hm the amenities all these resorts right say a hotel for like being pampered having everything right there your fingertips having a waterslide because who doesn't love a waterslide right tennis courts tennis instructors whoever you're into you also at a hotel you'll have a concierge which if you're not watching our videos and getting all of the inside information you're gonna need that concierge to having that daily household cleaning up I mean who wants to clean up clean up after themselves on vacation especially you got kids pretty nice not to have that chore anymore on holiday yeah so the winner for amenities mm-hmm is it's gonna be hotel because that a vacation rental you are cleaning yourself way to put it so to the clear winner here is gonna be a hotel because it a vacation right so you are doing cleaning yourself yeah you'll you may have a pool depending on what they can transfer you're getting some of these vacation rentals are liking condominium complexes so there's tennis courts there's poles there's other things like that there yes but you're probably not going to find a resort style pool so you're probably not going to find water swim up bar no room service no concierge number three space in solitude what's gonna win here I don't know what is this one gonna be the vacation rental oh okay yeah so hotels generally the hotels here are in resort areas and so you are going to be in with everyone else I'm kind of poly everyone else in Wailea so you have tens of thousands of people let's get point Collina very family-friendly on Oahu the Disney resorts there but also like there's thousands of children and families running around to which you might not want on your honeymoon or yeah you know a quiet trip yeah so if you if your goal is space you're probably gonna find out what it makes you sure Ansel more than a foot Salim granted there are exceptions like on Maui and Hana you can go to the trivia Hana she's like very spacious but for the most part if you are looking for space serenity solitude you are going to be able to get away from it all a little bit more on a vacation right yeah we got a verbal one side BRB own emotes gobo we got a verbal one up in the big island up in Kona coffee country it was just like way up is this in a small town this tiny little home we stayed there for it over New Year's it was absolutely beautiful quiet watch the Sun go down every night it was really nice very serene and it was a very different experience than what you what we saw when we went down to the hotels yeah and it was New Year's right so fireworks you have many fireworks up there it's nice and quiet where if you're staying down in kailua-kona huge firework display which blow fireworks but now when our boy Henry goes to bed at like seven o'clock at night yeah all right number four location and so this kind of depends on what you're looking for but a lot of times the resort's are ideally positioned so they are on the best beaches they are near the best restaurants they are close to the hub for all the activities yeah usually on the leeward side of the island which is a dry side of the island yeah so that just makes a really nice you're guaranteed to have the best weather possible yeah and then yeah all the towns are there all the touristy activities the harbors the boats there well position yeah that doesn't mean you can't find that with a condo but the odds of you getting there are fewer options to get all into crying beaches with a condo yeah as opposed to a resort because these resorts have come in and they've been plucked themselves right down in the best location which is a good point to going back to cost is a vacation round most likely have to get a rental car where if you're in a hotel you could get by with that one in some locations so yeah since vacation rentals going to be farther away location wise rental cars it's an additional cost for you winner relocation it depends on what you want but if you want to be in the hub of things we want to be our best features near all the restaurants near the activity hub and Center hotels what and then consistency so some people love to know that they can walk into a hotel chain I get the same thing no matter where they go throughout the world yeah go to a wesen you know you're gonna get that Westin smell they sell it in the gift shop but if you are a fan of consistency mm-hmm yeah you gonna love a hotel right and Hawaii the hotels are spectacular it's a very high standard very clean very fresh if flowers get leis when you get there for a lot of the nice ones you let the thrill of not knowing what you're showing up to like that it's fun you open the door Airbnb is like he's gonna look like the picture is it gonna look something else maybe it's even better we usually think it's even better than the pictures so it's a lot of fun yeah especially because you're usually around more locals say you might actually meet some friends who live there well that's a really good point yeah so what what do you prefer consistency or no with the possibility of meeting some fun locals [Laughter] we've gone through the criteria who wins kind of a toss-up all right some points back and forth pros and cons vacation rental cuts out which we need it I love vacation rentals I think it's a great way to see Hawaii maybe not your first trip I'll acknowledge it's good to go maybe your second third fourth fifth trip do a vacation rental get your bearings the first one but I love vacation rentals any island you're on you can find interesting places say either in condominium or in a sandal own house you find you get a yard I don't know this is a great way to really feel like more of a local or resident get a true Hawaiian experience and yeah it's that lack of consistency I kind of like is that venture of going like I mean that house we stayed in the in Kona coffee country it's like over a hundred year old house that the great-great-grandfather's that built dry it is like so cool to have that experience exactly the lady who ran it she roasted her own coffee so we got to watch her roast coffee so there's a lot of fun extra experience yeah what's your favorite so generally like vacation rentals but I have to say we have been staying in hotels recently and that's now my favorite that is winning for me because don't go Henry it's two and he's where he is so much fun in the pool he's almost tall enough to go down the water slides he just going down the lazy rivers I'm really digging the pool experience that's my town yeah it's really nice and it is really nice because generally when we are traveling we're also working and so one of us can be up in the room and take him down just around the grounds and then switch so yeah we said no hotels in Oahu during their last trip and that was a lot of fun now I got experience at different hotels and it was really nice whatever floats your boat with this kind of pros and cons on hotels versification Reynolds in Hawaii Airbnb in verbo are the most popular for look for getting vacation rentals in Hawaii you can like individual property management websites also it's pretty easy and safe to book for
