hi welcome everyone is Jamie Halle here from crossfader now if you are a subscriber to the channel already you'll notice I am in a different location today this is our office rather than in the studio and that's because today I'm going to be diving a bit deeper into where DJ's get their music from so I'm going to jump on the computer and show you some of the sources and places that I've been able to find and download music throughout my career and even now when I'm getting music for crossfader for us and their skills videos I just want to say a quick bit about ripping music from YouTube from SoundCloud I know a lot of new DJ's will do that at the start because yes it can be quite expensive to acquire large amounts of music to DJ with however you're only doing yourself a disservice because when you rip music from YouTube or from SoundCloud it's actually not the full quality file that you're getting and it might sound great in your headphones it might sound great on your speakers at home but when you get into a club environment all those bigger sound systems it's not going to live up to the full quality files of other DJ's or other full quality files in your collection and it's just not going to sound great now I'm not going to get into all the technicalities around bit rates but when you rip a piece of audio from YouTube you're actually pulling down a lesser compressed version of that piece of audio so it just doesn't translate well when it goes on to a big sound system there are some fruit and some paid services that I'm going to show you today both worth looking into we've also got a free crossfade a music pack that you can download straight away from the link to help get your music library started it's full of exclusive tunes that you'll only find in that pack also if you're watching this video around the time it's been uploaded we're running a giveaway for the Pioneer DDJ 400 for one lucky winner and the Pioneer DDJ SB 3 for one lucky winner plus a beginner intermediate and advanced course for either of the relevant softwares Serato or rec or box and our complete scratching cost so there are two big prizes to give away here if you want to enter you can find out at the end of this video how to do just that but let's get back to the music downloads in this video you're going to learn about both paid services and free services to download and build your music collection let's get stuck in ok so the first place we're going to look at for downloading legitimate music our record pools what record pools are a basically a legitimate place where labels and artists send music then others DJs we can listen to that music rate it maybe give some feedback and once we've done that we can download the file to them play in our sets to get access to these records you will have to pay a subscription fee so the most popular one that I've used up until this day is DJ city I've used this for many many years and I can highly recommend them the price is $90 for 3 months and you basically get charged every quarter of the year and it's not jealous so that works out at $30 a month they have all sorts in record pools so as you can see here multiple versions you'll be able to get like an intro version for a lot of hip-hop and R&B tracks so some of those tracks that harder to mix you actually have an introduction to to use when you're blending those Tunes there might be a few acapellas on there and a few instrumentals and then there are a lot of exclusive remixes and re-edits that within back on pools that you won't find anywhere else so this is one of the most popular ones is DJ city another record pool I'm a big fan of at the moment is BPM supreme now this comes in a bit of a different price so first membership is $9.99 for the first month but then it goes up to 1999 from then on and then there's a Premium Membership which basically has these extra features here I quite like the idea that they've put curated sets in there so you can click on like a playlist of music and things that they've picked out and you can download that whole playlist but that Premium Membership goes up to 20 no no it's no so that's the same as DJ City I really like their interface really like the way that BPM supreme works and the way you download music you don't have to rate the tracks in BPM supreme you can just download them and there are I gained intro versions and exclusive edits and all sorts another really popular DJ pool is digital DJ pool this one a bit cheaper $15 a month and a $1 trial personally I can't say much about this because I haven't used this myself but I know a lot of DJ's that recommend it and I know a lot of DJ's that use it so it's definitely want to consider and then you can see here there are two others Zipp DJ and I DJ pool which they are comparing we've already talked about DJ City but these other two again you could have a look at I haven't used them personally but they do the same thing really I'd highly recommend looking at at at least one record pool to start building your music library in your music collection these records get updated on a daily and weekly basis so they're really really useful for any working DJ's out there moving on from that we're looking at streaming services now as I've made this video both tidal and SoundCloud both offer streaming services and and they both actually integrate into Serato DJ so here I've got Serato DJ Lite and we've got tidal and SoundCloud that you can access from within the software further down the line other streaming services might get added to Serato but this is how it stands at the moment you can create playlists and title for example I've got Serato mix here that I've put together and we're doing a performance on this will then show up within your Serato DJ software and you can manage your music from within the tidal app or from within the SoundCloud app moving on from that if you're a Spotify user then you're going to be restricted to using the DJ application which has been designed for iPhone or an iPad it doesn't work on desktop I've just got this page up here cuz we're working on a computer but you'd have to download this to an iPhone or an iPad or even an Apple watch apparently now DJ by algorithm actually integrates with Spotify so you can use Spotify playlists and Spotify music within the application but again you're restricted just to that specific software if you're a virtual DJ user you can sign up to one of those record poles which is I DJ pool and they have a subscription service for that through Virtual DJ so you can then access their music library through that music plan that's again something to consider if you are a virtual DJ user now for the free stuff a really quick tip is you could jump onto YouTube and type in something like royalty free EDM or copyright free music and you'll get loads of channels that actually upload music from producers that have submitted their tracks to that channel - then get showcased and a lot of them will potentially have a free download link in the description so I'm not saying they all will but if we just have a look scroll down show more download song here and then you might have to do some sort of sign up or subscribe to something to download that music there's usually some sort of catch that you have to maybe attach your Facebook or your YouTube and/or tweet the track to unlock the download but this is a really good way to get a lot of new music is to follow these different YouTube channels that will upload on a daily and weekly basis as well another way to download music and the site that I've use quite a lot is the artist union this is very similar to what I've just shown you but this is a website where it's all collected in one place so any sort of up-and-coming producer can sign up to this service and then upload their track so for example if we click this one here you can choose to free download it and just like before you'll have to favor or follow or connect with SoundCloud or connect with Spotify or do something to basically unlock the free downloads so you're giving some sort of data whether it be just literally alike or whether it be even email address to that producer to help them with their career and help them build their list but it unlocks free downloads and again it's supporting the artist and it's following artists that are up and coming but this is a really good way to download music as well and you'll find quite a lot of stuff on this service now I've actually downloaded a lot of music from here so definitely check it out another service just like this one which is a bit more popular is heiped it calm this links into SoundCloud really easily but you can search through this I'm just on top 100 downloads at the moment and you can then just click to get a track and again similar you usually will have to enter an email or something to download the track there we go and you'd enter your email and it unlocks a download so you know it's hard to get totally free music without giving some thing up but what's wrong with giving an email if it's music that you love you're probably going to think it updates about new music from that producer or from that service next we have record label mailing lists however these are much harder to get onto you're probably waiting for an invite rather than being able to subscribe like you can with the record poles these are free and what happens is services like this will add you to their mailing lists and send you music as they get sent it from the labels and then they will require some sort of feedback and some sort of rating on that piece of music but one thing I would say is that a lot of this music that comes through these record label mailing lists especially the commercial stuff ends up on places like DJ city or BPM Supriya metacarpals anyway but if you can get on a mailing list of maybe some more underground labels you might just have to contact your favorite labels directly and just tell them who you are as a DJ don't expect to get on any labels mailing lists however if you're not a club or a good working DJ and you'll have to prove that because they weren't just send tracks out that are unreleased to anyone and that leads me on to probably the final way to get music and this again is just to buy music you can buy music from various places Beatport is very much a dance and DJ based service and it's a very popular service for people to download and buy music be parts great there's also just for more commercial stuff you can literally go to Amazon or iTunes to download music and this is where you would just buy singles and you would then have the mp3 file or wav file depending on what you choose to download and you can import that into your DJ software and off you go lastly a quick bonus tip if you are struggling to search for new music and want to find new music one thing that I do quite a lot is look at playlists from within streaming services so I'm currently signed up to Apple music and what I would do is think okay and I need to update my party playlist so you can click on a party section look at all their playlists maybe go on the a-list dance so this is the freshest dance tunes that Apple have picks out and then you can get loads of ideas of what are the latest tracks and you can listen to them obviously and then I could count download them from here but look at my other services maybe like beep or iTunes to actually download the songs but this is a good way of getting ideas for new music to download this is works the same in spotify and deezer and other music streaming services they all have playlists that curated and updated on a regular basis so there you have it legitimate places you can download music and build your music library now back to that giveaway that I mentioned at the start of the video if you're watching this around the time it's been
