A M A Z I N G ! ! ! - Welcome back...
- A M A Z I N G ! ...to another episode of TwoSet Applauds! Where we're going to... ...appreciate some... ...good things in the world. A few of you have suggested some... ...movies, that had featured... ...actual violinists, and so we've decided to review two of these movies, to see just how much of a difference it makes when movies hire actual musicians. Finally. First one is a Chinese movie called "Together', and this is the end scene. Whoa. Not only did he nail that, absolutely, but he can act! - See, he's crying!
- He's crying! *chuckles* That's right, he's crying, yeah. - The feeling.
- Wow, he actually played it. As a musician, it makes such an impact. It just makes the movie flow more. - Yeah.
- We're not distracted by it. Yeah. Guys, imagine you watch a movie, and the banana is blue. You'll be so triggered. - Yeah.
- You're like, "Why is it blue?!" "It's supposed to yellow!" I haven't seen the movie, so obviously there's a context to it. But, I can just imagine this moving scene with him crying, except he's doing this. - Yeah... *groans*
- It just takes you immediately out of it, but... A M A Z I N G . We're not a roasting channel, we're an applauding channel. Applauding channel! But everything, the bow, left hand... Made sense of what he was doing. - *sings*
- Even the phrasing! Yeah yeah yeah... He did the second one shorter, first one longer. The bowing looked right, so... ...someone's got it right. By the way, when we hit 2 million subscribers, Brett's gonna drop his Tchaikovsky violin...concerto recording. That guy's like us, - Yeah.
- be like, "We approved." - *chuckles*
- A M A Z I N G ! - Yeah, finally like, tears of joy.
- "Thank you!" Cries... *fakes crying* Do it for Ling Ling! - *laughs*
- Woo!!! Actually can I just say, the conductor was...looked legit. He looked legit, yeah he looked legit. Yeah... One fine tuner too. Nice, nice. Yeah, legit as well. Nice. Legit! TwoSet Applauds! Beautiful. What a sigh of relief. Makes the movie so much more... *sighs* ...powerful. And more meaningful. It's just good storytelling. Like how can you tell a story through a visual medium when... *laughs* - You know what I mean.
- I know. So the second movie we're going to review is "The Devil's Violinist", Which is obviously about Paganini, the legend, - played by David Garrett.
- Mm-hmm. Actually, it was a bit hard to track this down, because the recordings on YouTube were all very much uh... ...badly synced. One of them had... [the] wrong pitch. Well they altered the pitch. They made it like a semitone higher. So we actually bought the movie guys. We decided to pay! - Just for you guys.
- Just for you guys! Wait. That reaction was way too fast. I thought that the gasp happened... Bow. "WOW!!!" *laughs* Ow, I sprained my neck. Yeah that was way too fast, I didn't realise. Okay, some pieces in concert actually employ offstage musicians. - Yeah.
- Usually the reaction's more like... - "Where's that sound coming from?"
- Yeah. 'Cause we're not ex— - Wow
- And they all looked at one area. - Yeah.
- I didn't think human ears are that sophisticated. "We can tell straight away, which side of the hall the sound is coming from." Come on, David. Should have told the scriptwriter. - Yeah...!
- That'd be realistic! Yeah! Okay, so that, right? That left hand. You hear that happen, like two, three seconds beforehand. - That's the slide up that you see, and now you–
- Yeah. - Yes, that's where you see it.
- Yes dude, literally! Two seconds after. I'm sure, David Garrett, you can definitely play this. - It's not...he obviously can play it.
- Well obviously yeah, David... I think it's the editor's fault. Yeah, editor's syncing issue. It doesn't cost much, I'm sure there are many musicians out there that'll be happy to just give you a quick review. - I think what happened is—
- They must have done it halfway through. Here. This cut—the cut— - He started at the wrong area.
- Yeah, he must have started somewhere else. - Yeah.
- But the bowing worked there. That means David's on time. - Yeah.
- The... *mimics piece* Yeah, he is on time there. Did that actually happen back in the days? I mean, you don't really... - Apparently he was like the showman that did crazy stuff.
- That's true, yeah. One thing I will say though, is not only is he actually a good musician, But he does have that look. - That kind of mysterious, seducing charm.
- Mysterious... But he did that sync [it] was good then. - Yeah.
- Like it was pretty good. It's clear. I mean he can play it. Nice. *chuckles* Ohh...that's... Okay, I mean... Wait this was... Was this video supposed to be about... TwoSet Applauds? - I feel like...
- I'm applauding! Agh!!! From a violin perspective obviously, it's all great, but it's just so cheesy, you don't... *sighs* It's very, um... Mainstream people's view of classical music... - Yeah, yeah, yeah...yeah.
- ...versus what actually happens in classical music. - I'm sure we've illustrated so many times.
- Yeah. *snickers* Dude, I'm sorry. Okay, first of all acoustically once he turns that way, then the back of his violin's against the audience, so it's not projecting ideally. - Nothing against David, like he's a good player.
- Yeah. Like he probably, if anything, saved this movie. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'll— - Imagine they had someone that couldn't play doing this role.
- I know, I know, that'll be really bad, like... - *groans*
- David... - ...probably just saved this movie.
- Yeah. To be honest, It's probably that [it's] not the directors priority, but I kind of wish they just have someone overlook it. This is TwoSet Applauds. - Yeah.
- We're all about positivity now! - At least they got an instrument! Yeah! Woo!
- We're changing! Yeah! That's a pretty cool arrangement, the orchestral, - did you hear the bassoon part? *mimics video*
- Yeah...! Going— Yeah, that's true. *laughs* Mate, you're supposed to be focusing, and leading the orchestra...! Or look at your music...! Editor-san, can you please like edit that same face, but to like Hilary Hahn doing it on the hula-hoop. - That is pretty funny.
- And he has no fine tuners...! *snickers* Whoa! Not even on the E string! That is 18th century af! Or 19th century, whatever. - Guess if you can play quickly, you can play slowly!
- Yeah! *laughs* - I'll say though, those thirds are very hard,
- It is nice. - and he's nailing them.
- He's nailing them. So in tune. Oh. Why is everyone laughing? *mimics laughter* I think the director went, "It's a fast bit now, you gotta act like 'Wow!'" Even though in real life, the violinist would be much more impressive - in the thirds and the tenths, than the... *sings part*
- Yeah. - Which is actually a lot easier.
- Yeah. It's meant to be bowed, right? I think so, not— - I don't know, usually people play...
- With bow. ...with bow, left hand, not right. - Yeah. It's still pretty good. It's still good. *chuckles*
- Yeah, very good. Oh he's doing artificial harmonics. Wait a second! When was Paganini alive? 1840 right? When was the projector invented? *hysterical laughter* - TwoSet Applauds!
- *hysterical laughter* - No, maybe it's just a lamp with a...
- Maybe it's a lamp. - Okay. We got too excited.
- ...shadow. But did they have those lights back then anyway? I'm so confused now. There's a lot of suspicious things happening this video. - Once again, David, I think, saved it.
- *chuckles* Yeah. Ohh, his playing's so good though. The guy looks like a devil in the back. People accused him for selling his soul to the devil, because he was so good. But he didn't actively portray himself as the devil, - and that wasn't a good thing.
- Yeah. Yeah, it didn't help him. I don't think he wanted that. He probably just like, "Look, I just practiced more than all of you!" What? They take a lot of artistic liberties, but... - ...he plays really well.
- Yeah. Well, there you go guys. Finally, TV shows that get— - Or, movies that get actual violinists. Thank you.
- It makes a huge difference. Next time, maybe, just do some research on when the light was invented— - No, maybe we need to do research.
- Yeah, maybe we need to— Classical music appreciation. Thank you so much. Please like and subscribe. See you guys next time.
