welcome to the gcn tech show this week is myself and jeremy powers thanks ali the tour de france is in full swing and we have loads of new tech stuff new bikes from scott look canyon as well as new shimano tech new sunglasses the bike vault your upgrades plus our main talking point what is the least expensive bike in the tour de france before we get on to our main talking point first up the results from last week's poll which was could you win or could a rider win the tour de france on a bike that costs just a thousand pounds dollars or euros well a lot of you voted and 61 percent of you said no it couldn't be done um which is pretty conclusive in one of these polls that's like that's a big majority but we also put this question to our commentary team on eurosport for our live coverage and four-time green jersey winner and welter winner sean kelly said that yes he reckons you could win or a rider could win if they were the best rider on a bike that cost uh just a thousand pounds dollars or euros but he did add the caveat that he reckoned they'd have to kind of shop around for bargains and maybe get some like used bits that were sort of you know a few years old or something but really still still top the range bits that were really good but you reckon for a thousand uh pounds budget yeah it could be done which i think is pretty cool but following our discussion about this last week it got us thinking and we started wondering what is the least expensive bike in the tour de france the teams ride different brands fitted with different components and wheels but which of these is the least expensive first we gotta talk about the most expensive i know that's actually what they had me do last time i was on the tech show anyway cool fact the most expensive bike written in the tour de france is probably a trek madone written by armstrong back in 2009 that was custom painted by damian hurst and commissioned by none other than bono yes from you too apparently it's worth half a million bucks nice fact j-pal like it but if we look at standard bikes and not the ones that are painted by you know turner prize winning artists which is the least expensive well ollie irrespective of the team it's going to be written by one of the domestiques and not a team leader or a national champ or anything like that those riders often get the more expensive lighter models such as the pinarello x light written by bernal and thomas at the tour last year or the honago v3 rs being ridden by aru and martin the same one that i got my hands on last year and did my first ever pro bike for the tech channel at last year's tour actually can we bring that can we bring that free hub sound check back out was that was i thought i'd laugh at that i think it sounds pretty good i can't believe i'm doing this this seems weird do you do this we should also rule out fancy custom paint jobs as these you know incur extra cost over the base price of a standard bike um riders like julian ala philippe or peter sagan you know stars of our sport they they often have fancy custom paint jobs but uh you know we'll rule those out so with that in mind the bike brand that instantly popped into my head was canyon and uh canyon bikes are ridden by archaea samsic and also the movie star team this year's tour of france and movie star sponsored by sram which means that they run sram access group set which is slightly more expensive than shimano dura ace which is used by archaea so as a result the mobby style bikes will come out slightly more expensive um what do you reckon well if we take the ultimate cf slx model used by nairo quintana of rksn seek that view around 6 500 pound on canyon's website or 7 000 and it comes with a power meter now archaea sunseek runs shimano wheels rather than dt swiss which the bike is spec with on the site but they're roughly the same price at retail so what about other brands well i think canyon might be the lowest priced bike in the peloton um i double checked some of the others just to be sure and here are some notable examples so ccc are sponsored by giant and they use the proprietary kdex wheels now if you take the top of the range tcr advanced sl zero as used by greg van avermaet that comes in at 9499 pounds well over 10 000 so still really pricey but it is kind of a complete bike does come with a power meter and stuff so it's pretty much off the peg what they're using if you then take the specialized tarmac sl7 newly launched as ridden by dakonic quickstep and bora hands grower that's also very easy to price up because specialized sponsored teams tend to use specialized everything so you know wheels tires components all that stuff um and off the peg that uh sl7 tarmac retails at 11 000 pounds uh mad you know again roughly a similar amount in dollars bit more but uh yeah a lot of money for a bike but it is actually off the peg you know too i mean the incredible thing is that when julian alla philippe had that amazing win of cold airs on stage two of the tour de france um he was riding the roval clincher wheels that come with that bike not tubulars as we often see the pros changing too um and he was running them with the s-works turbo cotton tires and latex inner tubes because you know it's slightly heavier but the added weight is offset by the much bigger drop in rolling resistance something i've been preaching about for ages so it's great to see that julian alaphilippe listens to what i say i mean probably didn't listen to what i said probably heard it from someone else but a tech presenter can dream actually i lied uh it's not off the peg because it doesn't come with latex tubes uh so that is an upgrade i mean that's probably the best 10 pounds julian alaphilippe has ever spent um so yeah there you go now i was surprised by the win on clinchers interestingly he wasn't even running tubeless which would have been my guess anyhow if you're wondering about ineos grenadiers well the pinnarello dogma f12 with vi2 is around 10 grand but add on a power meter at some of those lightweight millen stein wheels and you're well into 15 000 bucks one of the most expensive team bikes in the pro peloton no doubt the ridley bike's being ridden by lotto sodal are interesting too they don't appear to sell the team spec with campy on it but the frame set of the helium slx disc retails for 3199 euro around 3k which is cheaper than specialized or pinterest frame sets by a good bit but again far more expensive than a canyon ultimate cfs lx frame set which used to retail around 2350 pound but once you put the campagnolo super record eps group set the bora ultralight wheels the srm power meter the lotto bikes are a lot of dough now one thing to factor in here is the rrp isn't everything and that's because unlike a lot of the other brands being used by the pros in the tour de france canyon has a direct to consumer business model which is different meaning that well by selling direct to consumer they cut out those extra costs of logistics and supply chain and the overheads of a shop and such a like and in theory that means they can pass on that saving or part of that saving on to the consumer having a lower price spike but with that considered most of the pro bikes in the tour de france seem to be coming in at around this kind of 10k mark that seems to be sort of going right i guess the big exception being the canyons of archaea and moviestar but also perhaps the eddie mercs 525 of ag2r la mondial so this bike is available in a complete build with ultegra di2 for four nine nine nine euros um which the team does actually often use because or they use shimano components but they're not actually sponsored by shimano so they often i've seen them using ultegra uh rear derailleurs and and shifters but then they often do upgrade some of the parts to di2 they'll also add on mavic cosmic ultimate wheels which is like two and a half grand they're very very nice wheels ceramic speed bearings throughout and the oversized pulley wheel systems i mean that's you know another sort of 500 quid that you can chuck on to the price there rotor power meters and chain sets so you're adding you know over over a k on to the price with that and then they also like to run gold chains from kmc this pump myself um so that's then taking the price of those bikes up to around eight and a half k to nine grand that that kind of price point so still really expensive but considerably less expensive than the pinnarellos of team ineos grenadiers but we're keen to know what you think about this you know let us know in the comments and we're going to have a poll as well so do you think that bike tech is significant enough to alter the result of the race if all of the riders rode the exact same bike would the result of the tour de france be different can you vote in the poll yes or no and we'll reveal the results next week time now for hot tech and we're going to begin this week with the new scot foil and it's a looker one of my all-time favorite bikes is scott fall i used to own one and i'm a fan and the new one it's just a slightly tweaked design really so you guessed it there's a bit more integration of the aero bike we've actually sort of removed some of the cables at the front they're now integrated into the bar previously the cables used to come out of the middle of the aero bar and then they'd briefly sort of be out in the wind and then disappear back into the frame into the head tube but that's changed now it's the same design that you get on the scot addict that was launched at last year's tour de france with that integrated bar and the cables go through the stem and then down the front of the head tube and disappear off into the bike never to be seen again um and this apparently a bit more aerodynamic other than that the bike remains very similar so you've still got the fork flaps uh that sort of shroud the airflow over the disc brake caliper on the fork nice little nice little feature that's good to see it's retained and i have to say the new paint jobs those sort of satin fades they look very smart indeed so not not a big redesign just a slight tweak here and there but uh yeah i think it looks cool but what do you guys think let's have a poll hot or not the new scott foil you vote now also spotted at the tour the new canyon air road we keep seeing it i mean it's it's been around a while but uh rks samsic riders and mobby star riders have been seen aboard the new aero bike at the tour de france so warren barghi and alejandro valverde both been spotted riding it and details remain sparse about the new canyon air road but it does look really cool fingers crossed it's dropping anytime soon surely the new canyon air road is gonna come out soon i'm crossing my fingers because i want one we have a new bike from look it's called the e 765 gotham bike which is a fully carbon fiber hybrid city commuter it goes 25k an hour charges in about three and a half hours via usb it boasts 40c wheels in case you need to do a little gravel on your way to work it'll have you covered it's got tons of safety features that you'd want for riding in a big city like pedals that light up completely so you can be seen in low light it also has a mobile phone holder that will put it right in the dash so you can see all of your metrics maps etc now last summer i actually rode one of looks e-bikes not the gotham version but it was a drop bar gravel bike for a video called too tough for the tour de france where simon richardson and i adventured well past the tour de france stage 20 finish line to the tippity top of the famous ski mountain in val thorens now this bike is the carbon city hybrid so it's completely different but anyways it used the fezua evasion motor that this bike is also specced with and i have great memories of that day and that motor because i dropped simon like a rack there are a load of new sunglasses out at the tour de france to check out starting with two new pair from coo they're called the demos and the spectro and they're available in a bunch of different colorways and lens options they fall in line with that new style of big glasses looking like a rock star out on the bike you've seen all the pros rocking the big panoramic lenses with the angular edges koo's lineup uses zeiss lenses and many of them have little small cutouts for anti-fog properties and an adjustable nose piece as well now coup sponsors trek segafredo so you can see trek riders like lizzie dagnan vincenzo nibbly world champs matt peterson all wearing these at the tour de france at the moment in fact lizzie just won the course wearing a pair of these but these aren't the only new shades at the tour de france 100 has launched a limited edition collection for peter sagan too and he's been wearing those so they're called the white and gold uh limited collection the name is pretty ron seal i mean the lenses are mirrored gold and the frames are kind of white and gold so you you get the idea um i mean they look really cool a couple of things from shimano this week starting with some new top-end shoes so they've launched a new version of their top-end s-fire shoes they're called the rc-902 and they've been worn by quite a lot of riders at the tour de france so far including van art who actually sneakily wore them when he won milan san remo as well um now they've got a couple of new features built in so they're said to be sort of you know a better fit and an improved fit over their previous shoes they said to encapsulate the foot better cocoon it better and hold it more securely they also make use of the new boa dials the li2 dials that we showed on hot tech last week they're pretty cool um and they also contain something which i've not heard of before but it's called silver door stay fresh treatments which are said to help keep the shoes smelling fresher and better for longer which if your feet are anything like mine can only be a good thing uh they come in a range of colors uh of which i have to say i think white would be the one i i would go for i do love a pair of fresh white kicks um although in the uk they don't stay white for very long um and they're said to weigh 235 grams which is pretty light they come in a range of sizes and it's good to see there's a women's specific version uh as well and shimano says that they should be available from mid-october an updated version of shimano's e-tube ride app version 4.0 has dropped which is shimano's di2 customization app for all di2 users and also their e-bike users with particular benefits when used alongside the new shimano epa e-bike system essentially everything is housed now inside the app ride tracking metrics system metrics you can upgrade firmware get maintenance alerts and make all kinds of adjustments to the shimano electric bike ep8 system and lastly in hot tech this week we have the amazon halo so for those of you who are unfamiliar the amazon halo is a new piece of wearable tech a fitness tracker that you wear on your wrist a bit like my whoop although the woop is a device that's kind of targeted more sort of athlete demographic the amazon halo is a bit more of a mass-market product and it also has a key difference in that it contains microphones which are always on and listen to your voice 24 hours a day and the idea is that they listen to your voice tone they analyze it and by analyzing your voicethread they can determine if you're happy or sad the corresponding app also suggests and requests that you upload undressed selfies in a bid to track your fitness progress is this a step forwards in a more effective fitness tracking or is this a step too far for the data mining giant as we stumble towards a dystopian future nightmare world ruled by an evil ai surveillance empire let us know in the comments i'm sure you will more hot tech next week it's now time for screw riding upgrades buy upgrades i've never done this before this is where you submit upgrades that you've made to your bikes or your cycling life sounds good i'm gonna upgrade my cycling life for a chance to win the ultimate prize a gcn cycling cab is this a cycling cap no this isn't this is not a cycling cap i wish i had a cycling i i have some i just don't know where they are now if you remember we had eerie banks old bianchi restoration versus andre stops trek repaint refurb with the gold and black now the winner is this week is era banks and i have to admit that i voted for the trek but i'm such a sucker for the celeste blue bianchi with the pink cables i really could have gone either way so congrats to you era banks get in touch with us on facebook and we'll send you out your gcn cap this week on screw riding upgrades by upgrades we've got to start with gweeds who bought a second hand 2011 giant defy an aluminum frame he says with amazing endurance geometry but he says the components were completely knackered uh he threw in a new bb new ultegra carbon forks carbon aero bars new wheel set brought it up to date and he says he shed nearly five kilograms in the process now he says it's really good for a full day out or two in the saddle and i have to say that looking at the bike you know it does look like it was a little bit beat up when he got it but the restoration does look really nice i have to give you a good golf clap you know with regards to oliver's standards of how the photographs and things like that are taken i can see that he wouldn't be completely happy with that but i think that it looks great i think that you did a very good job so you are up against j poor cass and they did a dos restoration now they he says i bought this rust bucket from ebay luckily that the brown was only surface rust bike was stripped down completely cleaned repainted and put back together the only new parts were our new stem headset bearings cable and bar tape he said generally i'm really happy with it i might swap it to some trendy wide flat bars but to be determined so let's take a look at these pictures here that restoration did come out and it looks it looks nice and he really did it right he put the gears in the right place he's got the cranks in the right spot the bike looks like it did come out really well so so good for you so get to voting over in the gcn app let us know which of these two upgrades is most deserving of the ultimate prize the gcn cap all right so now we're into the bike vault where you upload pictures of your bikes and we vote if they're nice or super nice if they're super nice i'm gonna ring this old school 2012 winner edition of the cross vegas yes i have that right here hanging up so i figured i'd bust it out if you get a super nice this bell's getting wrong all right so we got the first one coming in from dittermar uh this was taken on my local front range loop in colorado springs looking south through garden of the gods towards cheyenne mountain only a thousand feet of climbing in 10 miles to go he said please note the pandering with the inclusion of my gcn water bottles in the picture dang that is a good looking shot i have to say having been to the garden of the gods many times back in the day for the tour of colorado and just out there training a bunch of times it is super pretty this bike looks sharp you've got the logos in the right place you've got it in the big ring super nice for sure for me i'm definitely i'm definitely a much easier um super nice giver router than ollie would be or even probably mount on or the other crew but big another golf club to you because this is a nice shot in a really beautiful spot all right we got another one coming in from mimencycle says this is my rental bike while i'm out in hungary it's a size 52 in gloss dusty lilac but it looks about as pink as you can get says the handlebars are too high for me but it's not worth changing out for only a few days of riding the higher bars actually help me while i'm climbing the bikes mounted using a shadow stand which means that the cranks won't be in the right position listen i'll be the judge of if they're in the right position or not because i'm not uh such a hard core person with this type of thing it's a specialized roubaix tiagra it's from the year 2020. let's take a look at this shot it is that is a nice shot i mean you know pink pink is a definitely an acquired taste and i gotta say that it it looks nice but i can't give you a super nice but i'll give you a nice it looks it looks nice i like it i like where you put it i like the way you set it up i like the i like the light in the picture um you're right the bars too high but it looks like you're on a great day and this is this is a nice though all right so we got another one coming in leeton uh just purchased this beauty and a new challenge begins wow i don't know if we've ranked a pashley unicycle 24 inch before but i can't say i know anything about unicycles this one looks good looks very good in fact i would love to have a unicycle like this i wouldn't be able to say that it wasn't a super nice so i'm giving you i'm giving you a super nice one best of luck send us some more photos of how you do after the first couple runs next one coming in from greg ambro says managed to find this reasonably rare bike fairly cheaply and have restored it over the last few years the frame tubing is reynolds 531 and it's a real pleasure to ride my on to my favorite coffee destination on a sunny day so he says that it is a uh ti rally which you can see on the downtube edition sbdu which stood for specialist bicycle development unit it has the team insignia across the top it's got the metal tow clips it's got the bikes in the big ring this bike's sharp it's cool i mean i like it it's from 1979 it's got the white bar tape it looks like it's in great condition i mean i would do more than go for a coffee on this i'd take this for a cruise i'm giving i mean why not i'm giving that a super nice that that bike that bikes has some stories to tell all right we got another one coming in from otto jusa um says that this is the nishiki criterium no description on this one i don't know on this one they got we got the the saddle pointed down we got the now and this is not my not my best place to be commenting but we've got the stack height on the fork real real high on this one um got the logos kind of out of place got kanti up on this side and then not on this side bike looks sharp i'm gonna give it a nice i'm not gonna be able to give this one a super nice thanks for the bike vault j pal great job and sorry if we haven't featured your bike we get loads of submissions in for the bike vault so keep them coming in and hopefully we'll you know get your bike featured um also speaking of which i did bump into a chat in eastbourne at the weekend who submitted his bike i couldn't find it this week but please submit it again and i'll try and get your treatment on in the bike vault and cast judgment on it so special shout out but yeah nearly times the end of the show thanks for watching if you've enjoyed what we do with light support the channel you know the drill the usual things also check out the shop if you want to get your hands on some cool gcn merch and because the tour's on i mean if you want to watch the tour best place for it race pass check out the gcn app but territory restrictions do apply so make sure you check what's available where you are also i bumped into a guy at the weekend who said um yeah i like the idea of race pass but i like listening to commentators on eurosport like sean kelly and stuff those guys that's our coverage you're a sport at gcn like that so it's the same coverage in race pass but you get added stuff as well like no adverts and uh the breakaway if you're in a region that can get access to it so check it out speaking of which i'm going to go watch the end of the stage now because stage is about to end um so i'm going to see who wins see you next week bye
