if you're a human with hair, keep watching to find out how keeps can help you. Humans were born to walk, and endurance is
kinda your thing. Ever since your earliest ancestors swung out
of the trees and onto the savannah more than four million years ago, your species has survived
by putting one foot in front of the other. So if you, a modern human, gave yourself the
entire day, how many steps could you really take? The human body is perfect for this hypothetical. With your upright posture, long springy tendons,
and ability to sweat, you can easily log 42 kilometers (26 miles) or more with the right
training. And while yes, you may travel slow and steady,
that’s part of your evolutionary edge. Humans are so good at pacing themselves, they
can outrun all other animals in a marathon, including wolves, cheetahs, even horses. But a marathon only takes a couple hours,
and humans can definitely go longer than that. In 2018, Camille Herron won the world record
among both sexes for covering 262 kilometers (162.9 miles) in 24 hours. That’s upwards of roughly 200,000 steps
in just one day, and about 60,000 times more than the average American usually gets. So what could an ordinary person do in that
time? It obviously depends on your fitness, but
no matter if you run or walk, every single physiological system in your body will likely
be pushed to the limit - especially your musculature. Each moment your foot hits the ground, roughly
2,000 times per mile, it absorbs the full force of your body weight plus all that acceleration. When you’re running that’s roughly seven
times your weight on each step. So as the damage from this force tears your
muscles microscopically, your legs are bound to feel like they’re on fire - a big red
stop sign thrown up by your brain. If you ignore the warning, you’re on rocky
terrain, at risk of cramping, tendinitis, shin splints, and even stress fractures, which
are tiny little cracks in your bones. Usually around 32 kilometers (20 miles) in,
you hit the runner’s wall. This is the sudden wave of fatigue that arrives
when your blood sugar drops too low. Without enough water or sleep, your brain
could even start playing tricks on you, creating fantasies and hallucinations. Sometimes, when you go beyond 56 kilometers
(35 miles), your vision might actually start to blur. At this point, even your organs think you’ve
gone a step too far. During extreme exercise, your body runs a
fever, and as blood rushes to your aching muscles and fiery skin, the rest of you will
be left deprived. The longer this goes on, the greater the chance
that your kidneys slow down or simply stop filtering toxins. In addition, you will probably get digestive
issues, making you feel nauseous and crampy. In fact, it’s one of the most common reasons
ultramarathoners have to, ahem, give up. The problem is, if you’re too dehydrated
and you slow down too suddenly, your blood pressure may plummet, your calves may stop
pumping blood and you might simply collapse. So look, if we’re being honest, unless you’re
a particularly fit modern human, it’s doubtful that you’ll be able to keep moving for 24
hours. An ultramarathon like this is no joke and
can be quite dangerous without properly working up to it. For now, it’s best to take a step back and
start slow and steady. Go on a light walk. Enjoy the day! You deserve it! Your hair is just as important as every other
