gout although intermittent can be an excruciatingly painful condition during flare-ups so let's look at what you can do in terms of exercise hi everyone and welcome to exercise for health I'm Richard and today I'm going to provide advice for exercising with gout if you're new to this channel we offer tips advice and exercises to help you manage your health condition with physical activity so go ahead and tap the Subscribe button below and the bell icon if you want to be notified of when we upload a new video gout is a type of inflammatory arthritis that causes sudden and severe joint pain usually in the big toe but it can be in other joints in your feet ankles hands wrists elbows or knees over consumption of purine rich foods or drinks and various Health factors such as obesity or heart or kidney disease can lead to elevated uric acid levels that form Crystal deposits in the body if left untreated it can cause irreversible joint damage chronic pain and deformation an attack usually lasts about a week and it's recommended that during these flare-ups you take any anti-inflammatory medication if you've been prescribed it keep the joint cool with an ice pack and the affected limb raised drink lots of water unless your doctor says otherwise and keep the bed clothes off the affected joint at night there are many online resources that say what changes you should make to your lifestyle for long-term management of the condition such as reducing alcohol or cutting down or eliminating certain foods or drinks that might trigger a flare-up however when it comes to exercise a paper in 2020 studied the effects of regular physical activity and exercise intensity on gout inflammation and clinical outcome it concluded that regular low to moderate intensity physical activity produces an anti-inflammatory effect to varying degrees while high intensity exercise provides no significant difference possibly because of the increase in uric acid levels during high intensity work examples of low to moderate intensity activities are swimming which is probably one of the best due to the reduced stress on the joints walking gentle dancing and even light cycling it's important to note that many health organizations stress that you shouldn't exercise during a flare-up and the affected joint shouldn't be placed under direct pressure as this can exacerbate the condition and make the pain worse so for example if you were having a flare-up in the big toe you wouldn't do standing Hill raises as a movement due to the nature of the pressure being put through the toe joint so stick to the advice given about an attack earlier and return to physical activity when you feel the pain and swelling symptoms have subsided in between the acute flare-ups though when you feel okay try to ensure you combine light or low impact cardiovascular exercise where you begin to feel slightly breathless during the activity building up to 30 minutes a day on five days a week strength exercises to maintain muscle and joint integrity and reduce the long-term effects of gout and gentle mobility and stretching exercises to maintain your joints range of motion which could be in the form of a yoga class always ensure you stay hydrated during exercise with plenty of water and if you're struggling for ideas on what you can do I have a playlist of home exercise videos to get you started where most will be suitable depending on your Fitness level so I'll leave a link in the description below so you can check them out remember the key is not to work too hard which should make it easier for most people just starting out versus arthritis is a great website with lots of information for sufferers of gout so I would recommend checking that out for further information and I'll also leave a link to it in the description below I hope the advice in this video has given you some guidance if so please give it a like by clicking the Thumbs Up Button below to help this channel grow so more people can benefit from it thank you so much for watching and remember to stay active and keep moving to feel better thank you for watching if you enjoyed this video today please give it a thumbs up you can also click here to subscribe to this Channel or click here to watch a recent video see you soon
