What determines how Avatars look in the Spirit World? THEORY [ The Last Airbender l Legend of Korra]

hey so furious across the last airbender and legend of korra both Aang and Korra rely on their past lives for guidance wisdom and the occasional spout of exposition in times of dire need well until this happens numerous times with a mostly with Roku and a couple of times with Korra and across both series we meet avatars a Roku Kyoshi couric yang Jian and WAN but the question for today is why do each of them appear the way they do or in particular why does egg appear like this time for another episode of is Tim wearing pants am i so for most of the first series the obvious answers seem to be that they got their appearance from the moment that they died Roku looks fashionably old who meet him in the spirit world in the window sauceless part 2 end of the ever time the Fire Lord we see the moment of his death in the year 12 BG you look like you're crying Tim do you need some pellets of love know what you're talking about and and no I do not need your pellets of love at that point rook was great with age and wisdom just the same as we see him in a new visions and in the spirit world but as the series went on it became pretty apparent that this wasn't the case that it wasn't just about death or age avatar kyoshi appeared like this but she died in the year 82 BG at the age 230 mostly because of an error in chronology by the creator's secure she was either using some really good anti-aging cream or she was appearing like this for a different reason likewise we get to see avatar ones death and beginnings part two but he appears to be the youngest of them all and finally Aang died in the year 153 AG at the age of 66 give or take a hundred years but he appears like this in fact in season two we even get a glimpse of what he looks like in his old age near his death when Tinson sees a vision in the fog of souls all this put together it's probably got very little to do with age or death so the question becomes why do they look like they do my theory is that each of the avatars appear as they did during what they define as the most significant moment of their life good or bad moments that defined them as individuals but let's look at Avatar Roku he appears old as if near the moment of his death but let's what's going on in his life around that point that Clues us in in the old masters Roku tells aang there I tried [Music] [Music] he was the avatar that could have stopped the war before it even began but he was too indecisive he didn't we see in an earlier episode of the avatar in the Fire Lord that roku and sozin did battle in the year 37 BG the roku couldn't bring himself to kill sozin his old friend so he chose to let him go instead and it's after that moment Roku tells us chosen and I didn't speak or see each other for 25 years after our bet or roku blames his indecisiveness for the hundred year war that for 25 years he could have done something but he didn't and it's in this moment right before his death that I think he truly comprehended his mistake without you all my plans are suddenly possible to miroku's appearance in the spirit world is determined by these important events in his life his age to reflect the 25 year period that he didn't do something but could have that final moment when he realizes what is going to happen when he dies he looks as he does in the spirit world as for what may determine his outfit in the spirit world his crimson robes and his top not an HID piece because the moment he died he was kind of wearing a dressing-gown though who would have thought you could look as epic as he did in a dressing gown over during his duel with Susan all those years ago he's wearing what we see him wear throughout the series now the case of outside Kyoshi is an interesting one because for all she is a fan favorite with her badassery and her big boots and you know what people say about a woman with big boots we don't really know that much about her past or who she was as a person what we do know is that she was relatively utilitarian in her philosophy and had a strong belief in justice law and order we also know that in the year 270 BG she defeated chin the Conqueror in the old masters she tells us the Kyoshi personally I don't really see the difference I would have done whatever it took to stop chin and things she goes on to emphasize only justice now some people have suggested that she takes her appearance in the spirit world from the moment that she defeated chin the Conqueror but I personally feel that another event in her life fits better from the Canon online avatar game escape from the spirit world we know that some time after that there was the 46th bassing save peasant uprising long story short the peasants rose up and tried to overthrow the earth King they needed a strong leader a merciful one a supreme one all hail Michigan isn't he beautiful we know from the comic that the peasants destroyed priceless historical artifacts and buildings show she didn't like this rebellion either so she set to work to create an elite force of earthbenders to protect their cultural heritage the Dai Li yeah Kyoshi created the Dai Li you know the brainwashing gustaba types this decision to create the Dai Li to enforce order in the wake of the peasant uprising as well as how she didn't like the rioting represents best her beliefs and philosophy around more justice in order but it's also just as with Roku what she deems one of her greatest mistakes and though Quixote appears somewhat ageless across the series like she lived for 230 years she does appear to Aang the same as she did in the comic that's why I think that this is the moment that determined what avatar kyoshi looks like in the spirit world thing is we don't know that much at all about the rest of the avatars in the case of avatar Wan he appears at the age of what he seems to think is the most significant event of his life the time that he merged with robber to become the first avatar and imprisoned vaatu during harmonic convergence and this would make sense for his character given that at the end of beginnings part two he saves two rather I'm sorry raava I failed to bring peace darkness still surrounds humanity it seems to be the one didn't feel he really accomplished anything after that moment therefore all he tried it was nil so it makes sense that he appears as he did in that earlier moment in his life avatar yang Jian actually appears quite a number of times to Aang throughout the series though particularly in the comics and the games that we really only know about one major event in her life her duel with general deine that explored in the comic books of the rift now this may be the reason that she appears that she does in the spirit world given that she looks pretty much the same as she does in the comic but we really don't know enough about her life to say for sure and in the case of avatar we know that he had the shindig with his wife-to-be and co the face stealer but very little more than that and so we come to our greatest puzzle the Twinkletoes and one of the best heroes ever written in fiction I'm not biased avatar aang why would he appear like this if we go by the logic that they appear as they do in the most significant moment of their life surely this would be the mode that he defeated mr. Hitler Fire Lord that's what the original series was all about right well no thing is I don't actually think that this is the most significant moment in his life or at least I don't think that he thinks it is the most significant moment in his life and that's what we're talking about what the avatar themselves think Roku's greatest failure kyo she's belief in law and all avatar one's pride that he merged with raava now in each appearance of leader of korra he looks like this so the question becomes what was going on in his life around this age some people have suggested that Aang's greatest achievement is Republic City after all his ultimate quest was to restore balance to the world and have the Four Nations live in peace this was explored deeply in the comics with harmony Restoration Movement and Republic City certainly represents the four nations coming together but I'm not sure this qualifies not only was Republic City established when Aang was Fire but it's so closely connected to his defeat of Fire Lord Ozai problem is there are a very few insights that we get around Aang's life when he was this age the most prominent on being the capture and trial of your tone that we see in the first season the year 1:28 AG when Aang was 40 years old and he does look the same as he appears to car and spirit for so is your cones trial really the most significant moment in Aang's life and if it is why because here's the thing no it's not it's just not there's no way that this could be the most significant moment in eggs life and so I was a bit lost as to what could have Sibley happened in Aang's life around this age to have so heavily defined him as an individual until I came across this club in season two civil wars part two I thought you two might want to see this that is one good-looking family huh this picture wasn't taken when he was 40 but when he was 31 in the year 1 1980 and what's so special about this year Tim that's a great question you genocide Eliezer tenzin was born Tenzin the only airbending child that Hank had untilled Bumi though he didn't know about that and the significance of tintin being born to Aang is talked about relatively explicitly in season 2 reminds me of all those great vacations we took his kids with dad Bumi and I weren't on those great vacations it was always just you and Dad well not the time he took us to kyoshi island to ride the elephant-koi no remember ember island we never saw the place tired Bumi gave us an insight into how Aang was as a parent he was not perfect and that's okay he's allowed to be flawed but more importantly she says to Tenzin he was so focused on saving the world and doing his due dat he never had time for us he always had time for you though his precious little Airbender it's possible that Hank favored Tenzin a little bit over kya and Bumi as for why he would in the last airbender angers guilt-ridden for the loss of the air nomads he blames himself for letting them die what do you blame yourself for we ran away for most of the first season he spends his time earnestly looking for more airbenders and every time ends up gutted because you know they're all dead and in the comic book of the rift we see him starting the air collide soon after the end of the war a group of pseudo air nomads who follow their traditions finding a way to revive air Nomad culture was one of Aang's first priorities after the war from his guilt to his duty to his hope and wanted he felt he needed to restore his people his inner ment culture more than anything else spite of this anger the Qatar had already had two children neither of whom we're business to ank teens and wasn't just an airbending child he was away for the air nomads to continue beyond him a literal next generation of air nomads and this to me was closer to Aang's heart than stopping the Fire Lord in fact in the finale he is faced with a choice to stick with his air nomads pacifist principles all to kill the Fire Lord the difficulty of that decision of letting go of those things that are so dear to him and the attention that he seemed to pay Tenzin it makes sense that this was the defining moment of man's life subconsciously not the continuation of the air nomads and could he truly restore balance to the Four Nations with only three and on the side know that this probably isn't that important in this particular photo he's wearing the same outfit that we see him in the spirit world most of the time though another question to consider is do they have any choice about how they appear in the spirit world the answer is possibly Avatar Roku seems to appear the same in every iteration that we meet him in in the spirit world likewise for the very few times that we see them habitat Kyoshi and yang Jin also appear the same Kyoshi and her earth Kingdom alpha red and white makeup and bronze headpiece while yang Jian appears in her air nomads robes Wagoneer pendant necklace it seems the wardrobe choices in the spirit world are pretty limited but while Roku gangchon Akio she appear the same this isn't the case for our egg and Kura egg first appears to Cora wearing to the corporate in yellow enema drugs including a big red doublet cloak type thing but when car is doing her spirit drugs thing in season 2 she sees hanging up here without his long cloak likewise in the old masters Kirk appears with this huge polar bear helm on top of them and we also see the Sun escape to the spirit world seat between seasons two and three s purveying here Couric appears without it maybe there's part of the spirit world that just makes people want to strip but by the way these differences on how we see them as so insignificant but I don't think that they're particularly important because even if they close change a little they still seem exactly the same in terms of age physique demeanor that they all remain relatively the same I don't see them pulling a matrix so no there's no real
