hello and welcome to history of middle earth today we are looking at the most powerful and iconic swords from middle earth so to start off we thought this video would be quite suited to this week as if you missed it we did put out a video on wednesday of an unboxing of some incredible lord of the rings themed lightsabers that were created by teeth and props they were definitely worth a look if you're into that sort of thing so if you have missed to check out the video but anyway this led us in turn to think about all the different types of iconic weaponry that exists within middle earth so today i thought it would make a bit of sense just to have a look at some of the most powerful and legendary swords that we come across and just what gave them their epic stories [Music] this is a good sword so let's start this off with one of the swords that was made iconic from the peter jackson adaptations and this sword was called herogrim herrugrim was the sword that belonged to king theoden of rohan during the time of the war of the ring the meaning of its name is very fierce or cruel and savage in rohirric and although it most famously belonged to king theoden it had actually existed for over 500 years as it got passed down from king to king who ruled rohan it was also a great symbol of theoden's recovery after he had been cured by gandalf of saruman and grima wormtongue's poison as he had wheeled this blade as he rode to war during the battle of the hornberg as well as his final fight during the battle of the palino fields a great sword for a great king now for the next hold we're going to look at we're going to jump back a fair amount of time all the way back to the time of turin taramba he had a sword that became known as gurthang this sword is the first on our list that is a reforging of an older sword but it will not be the last and this one was reforged from a blade called anglachal which originally was forged by ale the dark elf and was given as a gift to king thingol of doriath and then later taken by bellic strongbow when searching for turin tyrion would actually then accidentally slay his friend through a case of mistaken identity as he thought he was about to be tortured by orcs except it was actually rescuing him from his capture so in tribute turin reforged it and now as gurthang it was black and sean with a pale fire and he used it to kill an easterling chief named brother claimed many victories while fighting from nargothrond and finally and most famously slaying the dragon glaurung although this is where the stories of this sword would stop as turin would shortly after take his own life with this very sword and with this act the blade broke as well now we fast forward again but this time to the years of the hobbit adventures with the alvin sword orchest you could not wish for a finer blade although it is quite ironic it is probably most well known for being wielded by a dwarf and that dwarf was thorin oakenshield but as well as him it was sure to have had many more owners before albeit none of them are actually named as it was forged in the great city of gondolin during the first age of middle earth even though most know it by the name orchest it was also known by two other names and these were either biter as it was known by the goblins or goblin cleaver from its syndaran translation orchest was known to have taken the lives of hundreds of goblins in its time when the elves of gondolin continuously hunted them in the hills surrounding their hidden city however after the fall of gondolin its whereabouts appear unknown until it was finally found in the trolls cave by thorin and his company during the quest variable and this is where thorin takes ownership of it and has its history confirmed by already half alvin when passing through rivendale however when the dwarven company would be captured by the elves of merkwood it would be taken off him and only after his death during the battle of five armies is when king thrandrill would return orchards to thorin and let it be buried upon his chest [Music] and now after talking about orchest it only seems fitted now to move on to the sword glam dream no were they made by any smith among men this blade is most well known for being wielded by gandalf during the war of the ring however it was created during the same time as orchest within the city of gondolin so they were actually considered to have similar histories however although similar glamdring was considered greater for it was originally wielded by the king of gondolin himself turgon and with this sword he would have killed a large number of orcs or goblins as they had named it as beta and would flee simply from the site of it this legend was actually so well known that it was remembered all the way into the third age of middle earth and that was by the orcs who lived in the misty mountains but sadly the next portion of its history is not really known just like that of orchests all that can be guessed is what is said by auronz in that they were most likely just plundered time after time until they happened to reach the cave of the trolls in ariador so then after gandalf had claimed glamdring it would travel with him throughout the rest of his time in middle-earth even into the depths of moria while fighting the balrog and he was even still with him after being returned as gandalf the white until the very end of his time when he finally sailed west however this is the point when its end fate becomes actually unknown is never mentioned specifically if he took it west with him or not some think he could have after all he did take shallow facts with him so why not the sword as well but some others also think he may have just left it behind as no weapons would have been needed when they did reach the undying lands so this is one of those times where realistically you can believe in whichever outcome you want to now the next sword we have to travel back to the first stage again although this will be a quick one and this sword is named ringgill now ringo was the blade that was wielded by the first hiking of the noldor fingolfin and with this sword in his hand he is said to have accomplished one of the greatest deeds ever committed on the lands of middle earth he took his sword that was said to have glittered like ice and with such vicious madness he rode along to angband to challenge the dark lord morgoth to single combat with ringgolf golfing managed to wound morgoth seven times but sadly he was still defeated by the great power of the dark lord however morgoth would never actually fully recover from these wounds as afterwards he was stuck with a permanent limp from this point on now before we get on to the most powerful swords for middle earth i thought we'd take a quick sidestep and have a look at a couple of the most popular knives and sadly these blades didn't quite qualify to be false hordes so first of all we will mention debatably the most popular and well-known blade in all of tolkien's work sting [Music] sting was believed to have been forged during the first age in gonoline during the same time as that of glam drink and orchest and it was also one of the blades to glow when orcs and goblins were near as most of you will likely know this was the elvish blade that was found by the company of thorin oak shield during the adventures of the hobbit by none other than bilbo baggins nothing of it was really known before it was found by bilbo but from here it would stay on bilbo's head for the rest of his journey and all the time until he would pass it on to frodo baggins in riverdale during the lord of the rings as we know the blade succeeded in many great deeds from fighting off the forest spiders of murkwood to kill in the great spider shelop it did possess special properties after all as well as glowing when orcs were near it was also exceptionally sharp for example it could painfully stab and wound the cave troll from kazadoom when you look at the likes of boromi when his sword could do no more than just glance off his hide sting actually ended his time being left to samwise gamji after frodo left for the undying lands but it is unknown whether sam took it with him when he too would sail west or if it was left as maybe an heirloom to his family in generations to come the blade glows blue when orcs are close and it's times like that my lad when you have to be extra careful for the other not quite a sword type blade we will take a look at the mogul blade now this one was famous for the damage it caused as this was the long poisonous dagger that was used by the nazgul it is well known for being used by the witch king to stab frodo on weathertop and due to the effects of it it meant that if untreated frodo would have become a wraith himself the effects of this blade was only able to be stopped by the strongest of healers but it was also actually possible to slow it with the atholas plant also known as king's foil but even when i say stopped here is not completely healed it was actually only when frodo finally sailed west to the undying lands that he ever stopped feeling the effects of it so this was a very deadly blade for the deadly servants of sauron help him strider he's been stabbed by a mortal blade now for the most powerful weapon for middle earth you probably could guess it it is adjural flame of the west also known as the reforged sword of narcilla was the sword of aragorn the king that started its life as a symbol of the kingship of arnold and gondor and as an heirloom of the descendants of the first king of numenor alvaros nasa would eventually work its way to a lendil and he carried it into the battle of dagolat and this is where it was broken at the end of the second age as it broke under elendil's fallen body after he was killed by the hands of sauron but this is where isildul took the fragments of his father's sword and cut the ring from saron's hand after the dark lord had fallen then after this its fragments remained with the kings of arnold and laid to the chieftains of the dunadine and it was passed down from generation to generation until it was finally reforged by the alvin smiths of rivendell and this is where it changed from narsil to andurel after all howland had said that it would not be forged again until saron had returned and so it turned out to be and it was here during the war of the ring that aragorn famously wielded it and this helped aragorn establish himself as the heir of isildor and elendil and it is this blade that played the pivotal role in convincing the dead men have done harold to fulfill their oath that isildor had cursed them off the ending of this old story is not actually known either but many believe it was buried with aragorn after his passing [Music] so there we have it i've run through some of the most powerful swords of middle earth along with a
