reacting to the 2024 Met Gala colloquially referred to as Fashion's biggest night the annual Met Gala has become a worldwide phenomenon being attended by dozens of aess celebrities covered by hundreds of Publications and critiqued by thousands of online Spectators myself being one of them this is the fourth year in a row that I've covered the Met Gala so you should know the drill by now but for those of you completely unfamiliar with this stared event allow me to explain traditionally held on the first Monday of May the me Gala marks the opening of the costume institute's annual fashion exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art started back in 1948 the fundraising event quickly became one of the highlights of the New York Social Scene being attended by High Society types and the elites of the fashion industry it wasn't until the 1970s when ex editor-in-chief for American Vogue Diana veland became a consultant for the costume Institute that the event became more of a spectacle besides inviting actors artists musicians and models whose attendance raised the events Prestige Reland also introduced themes for the evening with said themes relating to that Year's fashion exhibit although not technically mandatory guests of the gala were expected to dress the part something that has proven to be difficult to this day current American Vogue editorinchief Anna wintor has overseen the Met Gala since 1995 becoming the final say on everything from the dress code to the guest list to the food and it has since become become one of the most exclusive parties in the world while an entire night dedicated to dressing up in lavish outfits might seem like a waste of time to most the Met Gala does serve a purpose because the costume Institute receives no money from the Metropolitan Museum itself the me Gala is one of the main ways the Institute raises funds allowing them to continue their work in clothing preservation and research which yes is important now that you know a bit more about the me Gala as a whole let's talk about what every war on the red carpet in 2024 we'll be discussing whether or not they were on theme their Inspirations as well as my overall thoughts on their outfits keep in mind that hundreds of people attended this event so obviously I can't talk about everybody in depth and unless I'm referring to someone specifically by name these critiques are more General now let's get into it this year's exhibit which is titled Sleeping Beauties Reawakening fashion focuses on a series of extraordinary garments held in the C costume institute's permanent collection created in the last 400 years the Sleeping Beauties being referred to are a handful of garments that are too fragile to ever be worn again so they're showcased in glass coffins instead of the usual hangers or mannequins the exhibit reimagines these delicate Pieces by pairing them up with contemporary clothing that features similar techniques or materials allowing the viewer to fill in the blanks in regard to what they would have looked like in real life effectively breathing life back into a garment that was previously considered dead hence the reawakening of fashion in an Ode To Nature the exhibit is separated into three main zones land sky and sea creating a multi-sensory experience where the viewer can not only see but also smell hear and touch different pieces to better understand all the hard work that went into making them I do find the theme of the exhibit to be a touch ironic considering in 2022 Kim Kardashian made headlines for attending that Year's met G in Marilyn Monroe's legendary naked dress from 1962 which was later revealed to be irreversibly damaged because of Kim's little outing although the annual me Galla's dress code is influenced by the costume institute's exhibit they're by no means identical with this year's met galathe being the garden of time while this initially comes across as pretty vague the theme actually draws inspiration from the 1962 short story of the same name by JG Ballard the story follows a wealthy count and Countess who who reside in a secluded Villa spending their days reading books going on walks and listening to music a slowly approaching Army of men and women threaten this peaceful existence but the couple are able to keep the horde at Bay with the help of a garden of crystal flowers which can turn back time whenever they're plucked as the days weeks and months pass they pluck these flowers one by one until eventually only two are left they pluck these last two flowers together buying the couple only a few more moments with one another before the mob descends their beautiful home is left in Ruins and all that's left of the count and Countess are two stone statues peering over the now Empty Garden although this story is an allegory for the inevitability of death the fleeting nature of Beauty and the fall of the aristocracy as soon as the garden of Time theme was announced many predicted that attendees would take it literally showing up covered in flowers and that's indeed what we wound up seeing a good deal of on this year's Mossy carpet while the vast majority of these flower forward dresses were rather forgettable there were a handful that stood out for good and bad reasons we'll start with the good Aaliyah bought warari by sabias Sai that had a 23t long train and while that was already a showstopper the outfit itself was beautifully embroidered and I just adore the soft pastels which really captured the feeling of standing in a garden in bloom Harris Reeds outfit shared a similar color palette but with a more androgynous silhouette and it felt just as appropriate for this mat Gala as it would have been for 2018s Heavenly Bodies Mona Patel probably had one of my favorite looks of the entire evening which included fully functional mechanical butterflies on her arms to coordinate with her custom Iris van herpin dress I also liked Tiana Taylor's look which was elegant and sensual in a way that I felt evoked the Countess in the story Nicki Minaj wore a painted mini dress by Marne with large 3D printed flowers it was one of the most colorful outfits of the entire evening and all the textures and mention made it look like an actual piece of art I just didn't like the styling in my opinion the Met Gala isn't really the place for a purse even if it matches the outfit but overall I think it's one of her best Met Gala looks to date AA Gonzalez wore a beautiful tulip inspired dress which made her look like a real life fairy although I personally wasn't a huge fan of the cardier jewelry quana chasing horse weree custom H&M who yes regularly dresses people for the Met Gala and I immediately fell in love with the Periwinkle princess ball gown quana always references her indigenous background whenever she attends the Met Gala and this dress features Beed Alaskan forget me knots a flower that is incredibly hard to come by Taylor Russell wore a wooden bodice by L which was such a close color match to her skin that I was stunned and I love the contrast between the soft skirt and the stiff top Rebecca Hall paid homage to the iconic 1852 painting opilia by John Everett malaise which depicts the character from William Shakespeare's play as she drowns ailia story is as romantic as it is tragic drawing parallels to the Garden of time so I feel like it's a great point of reference regardless of its use of flowers tying into the somewhat melancholic tone of the story a handful of CBS took their florals in a moody direction that seemed rooted in alternative subcultures with the inclusion of sheer panels corsets and latex Emma Chamberlain was probably the standout in this category wearing a recreation of a look from Jean Paul gotier fall 2003 collection Chamberlain opted for this darker look as she wanted to capture the fragility and Decay lurking in Nature's underbelly and she certainly succeeded and it's easily my favorite me Gala look of hers Sydney Sweeney attempted to go the ster route with Mumu but the sharp contrast between the pastel blue and jet black didn't really work for me and I wish he'd kept the veil which really balanced out the entire look Sydney's been a Mumu girl for years now but in all honesty I don't think the two work well together and I'd love to see her move on to a different fashion house giigi hadid's Tom Brown dress was inspired by ancient stone statues and columns that have been taken over by plants with her outfit including dozens of 3D printed roses and Vines The Ensemble actually came in two parts the first being more minimal and Sleek before eventually transforming into something more AV on guard my favorite part of the entire look is the skirt which plays on Tom Brown's iconic tailor jackets in a fun and exciting way honestly ly the only thing that brought this look down for me was the hair which I know was meant to resemble old Hollywood starlets but it wound up feeling a bit too juvenile on Gigi Mindy Kaling wore an absolutely stunning gown by gav Gupta which they had nicknamed the melting flower of time which is a fairly apt description considering its undulating folds and ripples from every single angle this dress looked spectacular and I feel like it really captured how chaotic and beautiful both time and nature can be it's giving jean jacket from nope or the sandworm from Dune the only problem I had with the stress was that it often felt like it was wearing her and not the other way around she is only 5'4 and it is a lot of fabric but I think it could have been helped with a sleeker hairstyle to help her face stand out more one of the strongest flower Centric looks of the night came from coair and DEA who wore not one but two outfits on the red carpet her first look was custom maon Marella designed by John gallano based on a design he had created for Christian dior's spring summer 1999 okure collection the colors were adjusted to better fit the garden of Time theme but the overall look is the same and it's absolutely phenomenal her second look was also designed by galano but inspired by his first okure collection for xoni back in 1996 and they paired this with a large flower headpiece from Alexander McQueen's spring summer 2007 collection these are definitely some of my new favorite Z DEA metgala looks but I'll be honest she's yet to talk her Jon of Arc outfit fellow co-chair Jennifer Lopez showed up in a custom scaparelli gown which seemed to pay homage to the crystal flowers in Ballard story however JLo has worn so many sparkly naked dresses over the years that this one completely Blends in with all of the rest honestly at this point it would be more surprising for her to show up in a dress that wasn't sheer I also think the messy bun and minimal makeup was the wrong direction for this glamorous of an event Amanda cyer Greta Lee R Janelle Monae Paloma eliser Lily James and Demi levado also referen the story's crystal flowers but the only look that worked for me was ciphr which went in an over-the-top 1920s Direction with a modern take on the robe to steel and a silver Bob I also think Kim Kardashian's Crystal outfit had potential with John gallano for Marella taking inspiration from Dior fall 1997 but the Casual styling cheapened it yes that's how many of marel looks are styled on the runway right now but I don't like it most celebrities wore floral dresses that were perfectly fine nothing to Grimace at but nothing to write home about either so I won't be wasting my time talking about them but there were a few flower wearers who definitely missed the Mark Riley Kio was a classic victim of Virginia vard's Chanel while Taraji P Henson's dress looked terribly constructed puckering in all of the wrong places Jessica saffery was probably one of the most obvious missteps with her floral cloak looking like a midsummer costume from Party City I probably could have done better with a 100 bucks and a glue gun lizza's outfit was one of my least favorites she said it was inspired by trees but I think she looks like lumere from Beauty and the Beast which I think is because of all the changes that were made to the original design Anna wintor has a very specific style that she's adhered to for the last 40 years and it's become a bit of a running joke at this point that all of her Met Gala outfits look exactly the same she certainly didn't reinvent the wheel this year but I actually think her tried and Tru formula Works in this specific case the outfit was designed by L and references a cloak designed by Charles Frederick worth who is often considered the creator of Oak Couture as we know it the original garment named tulips hollay is part of the costume institute's collection so Anna's look is a subtle Ode to that it's not amazing but for her it's something DOA cat attended in a wet t-shirt dress by vetma that I literally rolled my eyes at yes it's very different from what everyone else was wearing but not in a good way she went on to explain that the idea behind the Garment was that a t-shirt is a Timeless fashion staple made out of the world's most used flower cotton but I call BS considering doa's personality I think that she just wanted to troll people and show how little she cared about the whole Extravaganza which I would have been fine with if she'd actually served a look just think about the fact that she had to be doused in water to appear wet on the red carpet meanwhile Brands like toza create that illusion with dry garments which Which is far more impressive Lana Del re's custom Alexander McQueen look was cited as a standout by multiple people and I have to politely disagree although it's technically on theme with its thorny branches it lacks the oomph I'm accustomed to when Alexander McQueen is involved which is likely because of the fashion House's newly appointed creative director sha mcgear the dress is meant to be referencing one of the Brand's most iconic looks from Fall 2006 but the version presented at the Met Gala looks like if you ordered McQueen off of of shen it's the small details like the thick antlers delicate Ruffles and lace veil that make the original appear significantly more Lux although a lot of people gravitated towards the Garden in Garden of time the time part was more rare Tyla was probably the most Innovative when it came to playing with the idea of time with her Balon dress being molded out of literal sand while she carried an hourglass to further that imagery besides looking incredibly Chic the dress also related to the actual exhibit with it only being being able to be worn the one time considering this was her first ever Met Gala TAA did an amazing job so kudos to her entire team L Fanning wore a sheer gown by Balman intended to look like ice referencing how the count and Countess are Frozen in Time although you could also make the argument that it resembles the crystal flowers while the garments engineering is impressive as is the cherry on top of this excellent sunde are the realistic Birds on her shoulders which El said were a reference to her role as Disney Aurora with the little birds helping her get dressed just like they would an animated princess cardi B wore a black wowson dress with a voluminous skirt that covered the entire carpet mirroring what happens at the end of the short story it created a powerful visual but overall it feels like something I've seen her wear before dread is ever present in the story which I think inspired several people like dualipa and gwendel and christe to go in a Gothic glamour direction for the evening although it might be considered on theme if you CL close your eyes take 10 steps back and squint without more references to the story's imagery or plot these outfits don't really work for me even if the celebrities look great wearing them numerous people showed up in outfits inspired by the theme of the exhibit instead of the theme of the party and if the people invited can't even get it right I suppose I shouldn't be surprised by all of the fans on Twitter dying to defend outfits that were clearly off theme this isn't necessarily a deal breaker for me but there does need to be some thought going into these off themed looks Charlie XX is one person that showed creativity in this regard her dress was designed by Marne and was made out of vintage t-shirts from the 1950s and 60s creating a patchworked tattered visual that referenced the unwearable nature of the exhibit's garments kloe 70 wore custom delara fin glue with the dress being made out of repurposed Victorian fabric which dictated the direction of 7's hair and makeup which were inspired by the era's morning Trends 7 admitted to being confused by the theme but I think it still worked I know a lot of people didn't like what she wound up wearing but there's something about it that I find quite Charming probably because it's such a fun mish mash of anachronisms it's a mess but it's a fun mess it's like what the CEST would have worn when the mob attacked her beautiful excessive dress quickly becoming torn and disheveled Ariana Grande wore a white L gown with a chiffon pleated skirt and mother of pearl bodice there are a lot of similarities to Taylor Russel dress understandably so as they had the same designer but I don't find Ariana's to be nearly as interesting I saw some people say that the Pearl bodice was referencing the c section in the exhibit but according to Ariana herself the reasoning behind the choice was quote Pearl is my birthstone so it's very meaningful to me for that reason as well as the subtle ways in which I feel like it nods to Glenda's bubble and to Wicked with its subtle opalescent Winks of pink and green it sounds like she thought the theme was Ariana Grande not the garden of time what's really disappointing is that later that evening Ariana changed into a margel look that I think was a good deal more interesting than what she wore on the red carpet she's been wearing these sorts of strapless ball gowns for a decade at this point and I'd kill to see her step away from the sweet ethereal route that we've seen time and time again Michelle yo wore a silver Balenciaga gown that she claimed was meant to look like it was frozen in time but I just think it looks like a ball of tin foil black pinks Jenny Kim wore a custom lion number and again although she looks great I don't think it fits the theme of the evening or the exhibit sure it's blue with a pearl waist chain but the exhibit is not outfits inspired by the ocean it's Reawakening fashion Jenny wears these sorts of two-piece sets all the time and I think that the Met Gala would have been the perfect time to experiment with something new I know that these are celebrities so their main goal is to look good in front of the cameras but they can wear fancy clothing all year long it's the Gala you can dress outside of the box for a single night it's one thing to wear a boring outfit as long as it's on theme but there were a decent amount of people who didn't even bother to abide by the dress code obviously they still look gorgeous it kind of comes with a territory but the sequins cutouts ball gowns and Feathers aren't anything I haven't seen before I did like a lot of these looks from a purely aesthetic standpoint but there's no relation to the event in question so at that point why bother coming of these basic outfits I liked Shakira Kylie Jenner K Gerber Zoe salana and Naomi Campbell the least just because they felt so uninspired at this point I'm used to the men calling it a day and just showing up in a basic black tux or boring beige suit but I'm still disappointed in the sheer amount that we saw Chris Hemsworth one of the literal co-chairs even had the nerve to dress like he was heading to a beach wedding his furiosa co-star Anna Taylor Joy was more on theme that day and she wasn't even at the Met thankfully there were a handful of men who did do more than stick a shiny brooch onto their lapel Alex sharp were balma and I thought the illusion of the face was a clever way of referencing the eeriness of the short story while also dressing like a typical Aristocrat Coleman Domingo paid tribute to both Andre Leon tally and Chadwick Boseman with his outfit who are both important figures in the history of mgala fashion for men Barry kogan was another that I liked going for a three-piece velvet Victorian suit which gave him the appearance of the count in the garden of time I saw some people joking that he looked like Timothy shalam and Wonka and you know what they're not wrong influencer wisdom K not only had one of the best men's outfits but one of the best outfits in general the silhouette and color is not only striking but the way the Garment almost looks burned ties into the impermanence of fashion highlighted in the exhibit compared to last year's metgala which celebrated fashion designer Carl lerf the 2024 metgala theme was last straightforward which is why I think a lot of people settled on what was easy flowers however if they taken the time to read JG Ballard story more closely there were tons of other directions they could have gone in the story is about love and resilience just as much as it is about death and despair and I think people could have leaned into that sort of dxed position in their attire I will always appreciate risk taking more than a random dress from a Brand's archive which is unfortunately something that a lot of celebrities and stylists have lost sight of this year more than any of the others I found myself nonchalant about the looks on the red carpet there was no sense of creativity or passion there were of course a few guests who had strong looks but overall I think this me Gala will be forgotten with time which of the 2024 Met Gala looks were your favorites were there any outfits that you absolutely despised I hope you enjoyed this video don't forget to like And subscribe and I'll see you soon bye
