We Bought Used Quads For $3K and Compared Them To a Brand New YFZ450R - TopQuad S1 Episode 1

hello everybody welcome to the top quad i'm justin and i'm mike sabo and we're about ready to do this [Applause] this is the first ever top quad series justin sturgill and i have both spent three thousand dollars on competitive atvs i don't know what he has he doesn't know what i have but we're gonna find out really shortly and we might even be comparing them to a brand new yfz 450 to see if it's really worth it to buy a brand new machine or you can spend three thousand dollars and have just as much fun for three times less the price but i'm really tired of standing here dude and i really want to know what machine you have so uh let's go rip it yeah [Applause] what's up guys i'm jacob brewer and this is brewer off-road now i've seen both machines these guys got and i'm not impressed we all know who's got the real top quad somebody's coming right now i hear you say something about my quad yeah a little bit a little bit it's not a 400dx [Music] well jacob this is my 2008 kfx 450r this is a pretty rare cloud mine i feel like a lot of people didn't see this one coming they were made from 2008-2014 a lot of people don't know that kawasaki even made a 450 believe it or not they were kind of like the run of the litter so kawasaki actually made this thing to keep in mind trail riders because it does have reverse it's the only 450 that has reverse which is really nice when you ride the trails you're not going to find that on other 450s but it really just didn't perform quite as well as the other 450s like the honda the yamaha uh and the suzuki ltr it just wasn't known for being the fastest squad on the motocross track but it's a really awesome quad and i think it runs really well i have literally no seat time on this thing man i just got done building this thing it was a basket case so well how do you think it's going to stack up a sturdy there's no way that justin's going to have the plot as much as this there's no way all right i guess we'll see [Music] installed out there driver what the hell is that what the hell is this this is sandblasting this and give up halfway listen it's got a little rattle can on it okay but it's not bad i mean this is one of the mike sabo specials right here by the mike sabo's this is a mike sable special i've seen your banshee look at this this thing is absolutely beautiful here so we both got the american theme going on yes red white and blue what did you bring over here what is this oh man dude this is a kawasaki kfx 450r you actually paid money for this i paid money for this did the guy that sell this to you see you coming listen justin this is one of the best 450s this has halos justin it has what it has halos what do you need headlights for for night riding nobody's riding us at the night weren't these twitchy at speed like you needed a steering stabilizer this is going oh my god okay well now that you gettified this up ghetto dude that's good this is a 2006 trx it's actually an er converted to kickstarter they actually welded the case up so the rubber wouldn't fall out and leak this is a pure race machine so most of you are probably already familiar with the honda 450r the trx 450r is probably one of the most iconic 450s out there second only maybe to the yfz 450. it debuted in 2004 in a kickstart model and then later in 2006 was offered in an electric start model the first national race for a 450r would be the 2003 baja 1000 and the first sponsored rider on the 450r was tim farr super iconic sport quad that revolutionized the sport quad industry especially when it came to racing just smoking the honda 400 ex z400 kfx 400 and starting the 450 class which really just changed everything the honda 450r was discontinued in 2014 but even to this day the aftermarket for the honda is huge and that's why the 450r is still chosen by racers today in fact there's a large number of people that are wishing that honda will bring back the honda 450r to compete against the yfc 450r what do you guys think i think they should bring it back too but i don't think it's faster than my kfx okay it has a pwr radiator okay that's like a 500 aftermarket goodie it has a precision steering stabilizer okay we have different spay print colors okay that's that just makes it better the head has been ported and polished it has an hrc cam and a high compression piston and a full henson clutch setup and carbon fiber wheels driver stock bore stock bore okay but it's been it's been it's it's it's kind of aggressive all right what do you got going on over here well while we're talking about mods first and foremost let me just point out these beautiful brand new ober advent tires that's going to be your downfall my friend as well okay how much did you pay for it eighteen hundred dollars you paid eighteen hundred dollars for this three hundred dollars okay how much free stuff did you get i i got some free stuff okay so are you under the three thousand dollars well is that with the free stuff or after that is after but i'm well below and actually we're pretty close we're pretty close because i paid 1800 per month all right all right okay par there all right and i have uh with the graphics and all that stuff i have like 2500 bucks i'm just over 2600 so as far as mods go we've got the high compression piston an hmf slip-on which dbc racing hooked up and we've also got a k n intake test filter that is uh totally crashed totally thrashed i have i'm gonna tell you i bought mine zero zero air filter okay but i had i had i have 50 to buy a new one one other thing i've got a procom ecu which i still have yet to do okay so so you don't know anything about it and these lights were 35 these are on stainless steel brackets bent by matthew jones i can't believe you put headlights on dude i'm trying to do this dude this is a pure racing i thought this was a racing event you can race at night time too dude no no you can't like this is this is not good i i it's a beautiful kawasaki is that aftermarket white plastic that came with it and i have the oem plastics as well and i actually sold a number of the factory parts it came with some doubles and that's how i stayed in my budget oh because you had to sell so this is a mike sable basket special i still have some extra parts that i can sell it to you after you squad when you see how amazing it is i'm not buying this okay because i remember these were the most twitchiest things at speed they said you needed a steering stabilizer and oh that's right i have an aftermarket steering stem we've got an lsr steering stem yeah but you need a stabilizer they become twitchy at speed so are you planning to go fast oh the front wheels aren't even going to be on the ground so it's kind of going to be a no factor those over tires are pretty nice they're very nice i honestly thought that you would have them so you have the suspension and i've got the tires yeah so we just don't have anything together right that's not good i'm definitely jealous of the suspension can i get on this piece yeah sit on it don't get too attached oh you got ims pegs too that's yeah ims roll design pegs that's a little bit of a sweep there oh yeah that's you know that's just a bomber okay no let's not let's not listen okay that's just a little i didn't work on mine for very long i've had this running for months the graphics look very good the graphics looks very good you mean you like the blue and you know the top card graphics is good let me let me sit on this oh check out the custom shifter by the way oh my god see that was snapped off yeah yeah and i just made it beautiful oh my god oh my god this is the fan work fan works and it stays on all the time i modded that you modded that modded that wait a minute this is the best this is man yeah it's got reverse the best part is this we're in gear just make sure you don't roll oh it has the safety lights [Music] that's the mike saboton [Applause] [Music] just imagine how while our quads may have looked good on the outside looking good on the outside is not going to get us through these challenges so we headed back to the brewer off-road shop to see if these machines are even capable of performing in these challenges [Music] alright so we've got our machines we both stayed under three thousand dollars yes but before we start these competitions are these things even gonna hold up man because i think i see a welded on sprocket man don't look at that that's a functionality item i mean let's be honest man you and i have had our fair share of mishaps with mechanical things yes i think we need a professional technician here to look these things over to make sure we don't kill ourselves today ah do we have a professional mechanic does someone need a mechanic [Music] all righty well the producers sent us our first challenge over my mechanical inspection so both of you are self-proclaimed mechanics but each in their own right now let's find out what's broken and wrong with your machines it is mechanical inspection time this is not going to be good this is dude this thing was in a box this is not going to be good all right let's push them in the shop let's push them in the shop see what we got going on i don't know because you need to conserve your energy to push yourself yeah it's probably broken [Music] all right matt so tell me what we got here man tell me that this is the most flawless machine you've ever seen i don't know you do some good work so let's check it out all right oh we got some play in the steering there like those wheel bearings they're tight they are tight liking that but the air arms without ripping it off the stand now she's pretty tight it's just the steering's down though that's a kawasaki mod is it okay motor looks pretty clean but she's got oil in here that's a plus should be cleaned up much i mean the motor looks really clean so you were in the motor i was in that motor okay this was an entire rebuild and it is fuel injected this is a fuel ejection machine that that definitely is nice but with the fuel injection are you running a tuner any type of uh upgraded stuff yeah it's tuned by me uh it was done about six hours ago and uh that sounds fun it could use a better tune okay okay at least it's extremely fast very extremely fast awesome so uh how do you think this thing's gonna stack up to uh what justin brought obviously better well we're gonna have to check it out all right mike you're not off the hook yet we still got to take this thing for a rip and see how she runs fastest squad you've ever ridden i like it it's definitely definitely well built i do like your quality of work mike i mean the steering does have some play in it especially on some technical trails i could see that really really being a thing suspension wise it does kind of beat you up but i will say the thing grip's good i mean the tires are great oh those are those ober advents yep i do like them compound feels pretty good too but uh i think i think you're doing all right here do you uh you may have noticed how smooth this clutch is too it i was going to say it shifts amazing i am really happy with the way it shifts i mean i feel like you don't even have to use a clutch but you do it feels really good um overall i really like it so how do you think it's gonna stack up to uh justin's i don't know man i think we should roll that piece in there all right let's do it so aside from a little play in the steering linkage maybe a little tweaking on the tune on the ecu and maybe not the best suspension i still think i have a really solid machine let's check out justin's alrighty matt this is my 2006 honda trx 450r it's actually an er but it's been converted to kickstart so you know you actually have to be a real man to start this thing but it is a beautiful piece of equipment so let me know what you think about it it's already amazing with your track record i don't know about that listen my track record is impactful what the heck is that oh my gosh you see the slop in these things geez well it's been hard that needs work okay it's been going hard yeah this is a high performance machine um holy cow man okay i'll give it to you you got the precision steering stabilizer i like that the rest of its wall okay leaking some fun sauce here um does it have oil in it uh yes yes you have to fill it up daily daily okay i did replace the carrier bearing and axle so that is okay that is brand all right just uh wow this is some interesting wire job here with the fit does a fan even work uh no oh because race bought that yeah yeah you have to remember that that's what the heck is that what uh i see like some uh chicken on the uh sprocket there um um that is uh i had to weld that on because um i broke the bolt off in there so it's a permanent and are you farmer uh well i did it with uh i did it in the middle of a field well okay that's fair because i mean i've seen chicken cooper look better than that i'm sure you have i will tell you that the suspension has been drawn through by rock and roll that is i did notice that i favored great and i'm excited to ride this thing well i mean if it has enough oil in it but oh my gosh it it it it it does it does it does work is this some skin control or what yes it does burn a little bit of oil a live bit okay the pine in the day is it is a high performance machine all right well we're gonna have to take this thing out and see what it does because uh i do like the ball all right it does sound good okay well let's go do you think you can start it i will do my best all right all right [Music] all right well oh i think that has something to do about it with the quarter day oil thing and some other stuff but um it runs it runs pretty good i did feel like i was mosquito control there for a while i mean it was it was uh you definitely smell it you know but i mean they say what leaking oils horsepower you know you've got to keep all that horsepower in it you know yeah yeah yeah but um this the actual suspension that you had done felt really good but you could definitely feel all the bushings that are womped out and the steering and all that you could definitely feel it around the corner corners but it definitely has power the cooling fan not working that kind of scares me if you get stuck in traffic you know rush hour that that could be a problem but um yeah we'll have to uh keep an eye on that i would definitely yeah does it have a temp gauge i mean these wires scare do you have a temp gauge yes it's on there it's on the radiator see that it's a it's a radiator cap oh yeah okay that's pretty fancy that's pretty fancy but we're not reading any temperature so that's not good that means that we're probably low on coolant well don't blow the cap off now although it may be mostly based on opinion matt deemed both are quads safe to do our challenges now while justin's quad may have appeared clapped out with all the smoking it was doing it was putting down the power we all agreed it made more power than the kfx and we suspect that it has a high compression piston and possibly some head work however this should be a good challenge with justin having an edge in power suspension by rocket ron racing and the precision stabilizer i however should have an edge when it comes to grip as i do have those brand new oboe tires so that's going to help me out a lot with acceleration and braking the kfx should also have an edge in shifting and it also has an overall tight platform now we're doing most of our challenges in the tight woods so that should play to my favor but who knows we'll have to see if these quads will even last through these competitions stay tuned for the next episode where we put
