if you have your bible turn with me this morning to john chapter 2 beginning in verse 1 john chapter 2 beginning in verse 1. this morning i want to talk to you about jesus turning water into wine i want to pray over you lord we thank you so much for your word and today we don't approach it with a lackadaisical apathetic mindset but lord today we come boldly before your word we come expecting and believing it to transform our life lord i pray that whatever we brought in here today whatever's weighing heavy on our mind or our heart would be just discarded right now so that we could focus on you i pray that you would eliminate all distractions and lord that right now we would lean into your word and father that it would transform our lives holy spirit helped me to get out of the way and really just disappear and let your word unfold like truth and light right before your people lord help us to understand what this text was written for us to comprehend in jesus wonderful name we pray everybody said amen this morning all the glory the honor and the praise belongs to jesus it's not about me it's not about entertaining you it's about lifting up the name that's above all names john chapter 2 beginning in verse 1. the next day there was a wedding celebration in the village of cana in galilee jesus mother was there and jesus and his disciples were also invited to the celebration the wine supply ran out during the festivities so jesus mother told him they have no more wine dear woman that's not our problem jesus replied my time has not yet come but his mother told the servants do whatever he tells you standing nearby there were six stone water jars used for jewish ceremonial washing each could hold about 20 to 30 gallons jesus told the servants fill the jars with water and when the jars had been filled he said now dip some out and take it to the master of ceremonies so the servants followed his instructions when the master of ceremonies tasted the water that had now become wine not knowing where it had come from though of course the servants knew he called the bride groom over a host always serves the best wine first he said then when everyone has had a lot to drink he brings out the less expensive wine but you have kept the best until now this miraculous sign at cana in galilee was the first time jesus revealed his glory and his disciples believed in him that's all i want to read right there this is an incredible incredible text just so that you get the right context and we begin to see this in the proper framework the gospel of john is different from all of the other gospels there are four gospels matthew mark luke and john the first three matthew mark and luke they are synoptic gospels which means that they start at the immaculate conception of jesus and they tell the story of his life but the book of john is different from the synoptic gospels in that it starts from the beginning just like genesis in the beginning was the word the word was with god and the word was god and all things that were made were made through him and by him the gospel of john is written for you and i to clearly see a picture of who jesus really is john wants you to see the deity of jesus christ he wants you to see the preeminence of jesus christ he wants you to get the right context he wants you to see him as he is john's gospel only records seven miracles that's it there were many more likely right around 40 miracles in all but john only captures seven but this one right here the wedding at cana is often the one that we get the least hyped about right we like to get hyped about the lepers being cleansed about the blind eyes being open lazarus raising from death to life but i want to caution you don't overlook this very first miracle look at your neighbor and tell him this was his first miracle not just the first miracle mentioned in the gospel of john this was the first miracle of jesus period it's a big deal all right now you got to also understand what's going on here in cana all right this was a very small village okay i'm from buchanan west virginia all right that's a small village all right but cana was even smaller than that all right cana was likely less than 100 people all right so everybody knew everybody it was a small town everybody knew your dirt they knew what you did last summer they knew everything all right small town no secrets and weddings were a really really big deal today in our culture we got weddings like every weekend right so like you're like at this wedding that way you're everywhere but in this culture you may have only if you lived in cana you may have only been invited to maybe one wedding a year and let me tell you when you came to that wedding it was a big deal all right the the jewish people they would celebrate the wedding for an entire week all right christina my wife would have loved that all right she was trying to stretch our wedding day as long as like started at 7am and go all night i was like baby please give the people rest um so you would have loved it but anyway i was just ready for it to be over anyway anyways some of you catch that later anyway um pray for me um i've already lost you now it's over i might as well just set it down no but in in cana weddings were a big deal all right they lasted for seven days they were all week long all right and now we see a major problem the wine ran out and according to scripture the wine didn't run out like halfway through the week the wine didn't run out like on the sixth day they were about to wrap it up the bible indicates here that the wine ran out very early on and this is humiliating this is a problem and culturally this is an insult to the guests who had attended now another facet of jewish weddings that you really need to understand here so that this thing can come alive is that the wedding was the first opportunity the groom had to provide for his bride it was the first opportunity the groom had to show that he could take care of her all the days of her life so you don't want to mess up the wedding ceremony in cana but this groom did the wine ran out which meant the party was about to stop he was about to be humiliated and this was a big big problem it says it speaks volumes to the community that he was not truly prepared for the marriage and it was an insult to the guests now with that context behind it let's extract some lessons from this story the first thing i want to tell you is some miracles can only happen when you run out i'm going to say that one more time some miracles can only happen when you run out there's something about you being empty there's something about you having no other options that really cultivates a desperation for jesus some of you you haven't seen the miraculous in your life you haven't expected god to do great things in your life because you got full of you're full of options you're full of plan b c d a your bank account's full but i want to tell you that some miracles only occur when we are on empty when we run out and this morning i pray that we run out of excuses so that we can be positioned for the miraculous i pray that we run out of options so that we can be positioned for the miraculous i pray that some of you run out of answers some of y'all who know it all i pray that when you run out you realize your desperation for jesus the groom could have tried to make excuses he could have run around and been like hey now look jesus i'ma tell you something so here's why we ran out how many of you know that if as long as the groom would have made excuses he would have never seen the miraculous in his life i'm telling you there's something about running out of excuses you got nothing left to say you got nobody left to blame it on you just have to own it and say i am in need of a miracle i have messed it up i've made mistakes in my life and church i pray that you see this in this text that when you are honest and when you are transparent and when you are vulnerable and when you admit that you've messed up that's when you are most in line and in position for god to do something supernatural in your life so long as you run around making excuses telling everybody why it's really not your fault and you're really not that unprepared and you're really not that bad of a person so long as you have mistakes you will miss what god is trying to do so long as you have excuses excuse me you will miss what god is trying to do in your life but the something amazing happens when you run out of excuses one of the first steps to transformation and healing in the life of a believer is admitting when you've run out admitting when you got a problem admitting that you need to be saved admitting that you need to be forgiven i'm gonna throw something at you really quickly do you realize that the root of your excuses lies pride at the at the very core of every excuse lies pride well you know you try to make it's not my fault you see i i had it together but it's somebody else's fault and i'm just gonna say this real quick millennials you know i love you i'm one of you but we are the worst at making excuses it's always somebody else's fault right so just anybody's fault it's your fault we don't like to take ownership but the reality is the gospels are telling us something beautiful when you run out of excuses when you run out of people to blame when you can admit that you are in need it is right then that you've crossed the threshold into being positioned for the miraculous look at your neighbor and tell them you better run out of excuses you better run out james chapter 4 verse 6 says that god resists the proud but he shows favor to the humble excuses are really just pride masking itself you want to save face you want to look better in front of people but the beautiful thing happens when you admit that you are in need the next thing i hope you run out of are options i hope you don't just run out of excuses but i hope eventually you run out of options so i want to remind you of a story do you remember the story of the woman with the issue of blood do you remember that the bible says that she had hemorrhaged in other words she'd been bleeding from the inside for 12 years the bible says that she went from doctor to doctor trying new treatment to new treatment medication to medication and the bible says she spent everything she had and the physicians only made her worse for 12 years the woman with the issue of blood had options and so long as she had options she used every single one of them except jesus but the moment her options ran out the moment that her money ran dry the moment that she was on empty was the very moment she got desperate enough to press through the crowd just to touch the hem of his garment when you run out you are always in position for the miraculous and there's something incredible about being on empty i believe that some of you it would do you well to just run out of excuses to run out of options to maybe run out of money for a little bit to run out of plans for a little bit because then you would be in position for jesus to show up in your life revelation chapter 1 verse 8 says that he is the alpha and the omega he is the beginning and the end he is the first and he is the last really he should be our first option but unfortunately most of us just use him as our last resort but aren't you glad this morning that the word says he's not just the alpha but he is the omega he's there for you at the end he's there for the woman with the issue of blood even though she tried all these other avenues he was still faithful he was still there for her and i don't know who i'm talking to this morning but you may be empty you may have tried everything you know how to try to get your marriage resolved you may be have tried everything you know to get your business to work again you may have tried everything you have to get your faith back on track you may feel like you're exhausted and you have nowhere to turn i've got good news for you he's omega he is there for you jesus may have been your last resort but he is surely ready and able and willing to save you to respond to you anybody thankful for a god like that with character like that that he never gave up on you it's amazing it's amazing the hebrews when they were freed from slavery in egypt they found themselves trapped between the red sea and pharaoh's army behind them they thought they were on their way to freedom only to find themselves trapped between an ocean and they look back on the cascading hills and on the horizon they saw the silhouettes of pharaoh's army the most powerful army on earth they were trapped there was nowhere to go it looked like all hope had been lost all options had been expired but it was right there in that place that god had led them so that he could show off his glory and his power and when there seemed to be no other way god specializes in making a way where there seems to be no other way i don't believe that that situation or predicament caught god by surprise or he was like oh uh oh moses i guess now what are we gonna do i guess i'll no that would that was god's plan from the beginning he was just waiting for them to run out of options he was just waiting for them to run out of routes out of egypt so that then he could show up show off in their life and demonstrate his glory and his power and i just feel it today it's gonna sound a little unconventional but i believe the holy spirit is hoping some of you just run out today he's hoping you just run out of plans run out of options run out of excuses so that then god can show up in your life and there are some miracles that have to take place when you are on empty you believe it today it's amazing but i pray i pray that you just rest assured in this one facet from this point the wedding at cana and the wine running out did not catch god by surprise the woman with the issue of blood running out of options did not catch him off guard the hebrews trapped between the red sea and pharaoh's army did not catch god by surprise he is sovereign he saw the end from the beginning and he was waiting for their options to run out for him to step in if you feel like your options are running out you feel like there's nowhere else to turn you can't see how god's gonna make a way don't despair rejoice god has seen your end from the beginning and when all human options run out the supernatural begins it's just the word of the living god i love it the next thing i want to show you from this text is that when you're on empty you have two choices look at your neighbor and tell them you have two choices when you are empty okay so i don't know about you but there's like there's two types of drivers out there okay you you already know where i'm going like you get the the needle gets like halfway on your gas tank and you're like panicking and you're like we got to fill up right now all right my mom is one of those people i'm serious if you get in her car and it is half a tank she's like drive straight to a gas station don't you dare drive me to chick-fil-a on half empty right she she's like always afraid she's gonna run out me on the other hand my gauge will be like resting strong on me and i'll be like i know my car we're good all right we're good i know we got at least 20 more miles and my mom is like ready to go so there's two types of people when you run out you got two options all right and and i'm about to preach because this is this is one of the most powerful points that we could ever extract from this text it's about to change your life change mind so you got two options when you run out number one is you can just find more of what you're missing all right or the second option is you can find something new option one again you can get more or option two you can get something new something else i'm gonna show you this it's about to get wild in here i'm telling you right now this world that we live in this godless culture that we live in that wants you to live life for yourself it always yields to the first option this life always suggests when you're on empty when you run out just get more i'm gonna show you how this makes sense at that wedding in cana when they ran out of wine the servants by the way and mary the mother of jesus she says this to jesus uh jesus they're out of wine now if you all know wife talk or mother talk you know she's not just stating the obvious what she's really saying is jesus you better go get some wine and put back in there men gentlemen can i anybody children can i get a witness when your mom's like hey there's clothes on the floor in your room she's not telling you those clothes she's telling you you better get in there and clean that floor can i get a witness anybody mobs you know it's true mary's like hey they ran out of wine jesus is not my problem that's not what you want jesus to say when you're in your time of need but watch this watch this yo the bible is amazing you should read it sometime all right so mary's like hey they ran out of wine in other words what she's saying she's a good woman holy woman for sure but what she's really saying is you need to get more you need to go get more wine and put it in that jar jesus the world tells you the same thing the world tells you all you need to feel the emptiness inside of you is more if you had more money you'd be happier if you had more money you could buy a jet ski you buy a house on the lake the world tells you you just need more if you're an alcoholic you're struggling with the bottle the world tells you when you run out you just need more the world tells you that when you're in a broken relationship a bad relationship you just need to pick somebody else you just need more when you find yourself empty in this world all our society tells you is more more more but let me go ahead and tell you something more will never be enough for you alcoholics can never drink enough it's never enough to satisfy them people who are entrenched with lust and passions of the flesh more is never enough drug addiction you could fill in the blank the world tells you you just need more but the truth is the world is not enough and more will never be enough to satisfy the void that is inside of you and if there's one characteristic of this world that is true this world will always leave you emptier than how it found you always alcohol will leave you emptier than it found you sexual perversion will leave you emptier than it found you fill in the blank the world leaves you emptier than it found you option one is you could go searching for more some of you today are even christians you've been believing all your life but you've bought into this lie of the world that all you need is more more more more money more possession more respect more fame you bought into the lie of more it will never satisfy you more will never be enough no matter how much you acquire you will always want something else it's true but there's a second option when they ran out of wine jesus did not fill it back up with wine did you read it he filled it up with something new he put water in the jars in the vessels that used to have wine there jesus brought something new now hear me the servants mary the mother of god just said to them do whatever he tells you to do so they're like okay yes got it and jesus looks at the servants and he goes hey go get water and put it in that jar where there used to be wine now i don't know about you all right but just if these were millennial servants they'd been like asking all kinds of questions now hold up jesus now wait because that used to be wine and now you want me to put water you want me to put something different in that cause that's meant for wine that doesn't fit here right the servants had to be thinking as they're carrying these gallons of water filling these jars they had to be thinking what in the world is jesus doing i don't know this i don't even know how this is going to work because this is this is water jesus did not think the solution was just more more more the solution was it needs something new it needs something different and he filled the jars with water and then he transformed it into new wine jesus was actually saying here the solution to satisfying the need is transformation not adding more to a broken deficit jesus was really saying and preaching through this visual illustration that he is the water who never runs dry he is the one who satisfies the human soul he is the one who can change your life and cause you to never thirst again if you have your bible flip with me john chapter 4 just a couple pages john chapter 4 beginning in verse 13 i want you to see this this same thread carries over two chapters later watch this john chapter 4 beginning in verse 13 as jesus speaks to the woman at jacob's well he doesn't offer her more of what she already had he offers her something new he offers her something different he offers himself watch this jesus replied anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again but those who drink the water i give will never be thirsty again it becomes a fresh bubbling spring within them giving them eternal life this is amazing stuff right here jesus didn't put more wine in the jars he put something new he put water he was he was representing that he is the only one who can satisfy the brokenness inside of us and so long as you try to satisfy your emptiness with more and more and more from the world you will get thirsty again but he truly is the fountain that never runs dry he's the only solution that can satisfy now listen i know that that sounds you know really preachy and all that stuff but i need you to catch what the text is saying the text is saying jesus is the good one jesus is the new wine this story is not about the miracle it's about the miracle worker i'm going to say that one more time this story is not about the miracle it's about the miracle worker jesus is saying i am the one i am the new wine i am the thing that tastes greater than the former i am the one who satisfies the human soul nothing else ever will in scripture wine represents joy and gladness according to psalm 104 verse 15 jesus is saying i am the one who brings joy and gladness into your life i'm the one that can satisfy you there's a void inside of you that is so large that only the creator himself can fulfill it nothing else in the world can do i know that it sounds churchy right that jesus satisfies but let me help break this down to a more practical takeaway for you okay because i think we can just be like jesus satisfies amen less praise right but i think that you need a little more application here there is nothing more satisfying than living a life at peace with god there's nothing more satisfying than being able to lay down at night and know that your sins are forgiven there's nothing more satisfying than knowing that you are a son and a daughter of the most high god it means that you live a life with nothing left to prove you have to prove your sonship you don't have to prove that you're a daughter you just abide you just are by faith through the cross through his blood you are forgiven you are made holy you are declared his children there's this is the wine that tastes better the the master of ceremonies he said to the groom he's like normally they serve the best one first so the once people get drunk then they don't know the difference between the bad one he said but here y'all serve the bad wine first and you save the best for last in other words this jesus will be the greatest thing you've ever tasted in your life walking in relationship with jesus is better than the former life his wine his water is better than the former wine the former life you used to live his life gives peace his life gives joy his wine is better can i get a witness that jesus his life his word this new life that you've been given is better than the former that's what it's saying he saves the best for last jesus this is a theological astounding principle right here in this story jesus gives us everything we need by using what we already have i'm going to say that one more time jesus gives you everything you need by using what you already have we see this theological principle repeated over and over and over again in text if you bring the water he will turn it into wine if you give him the ordinary he will do something extraordinary with it when they ran out of wine all they had was water and he turned it into wine when 5 000 people ran out of food on the shores of bethsaida one little boy's lunch he used what they had and fed five 000. when the hebrews were enslaved in egypt and there was nowhere to go god used a staff a stick that moses had to deliver a nation god will use what we have and he'll do something extraordinary with it and maybe this morning all you've got is a hallelujah maybe this morning all you've got to bring him is your praise all you've got to give him is a prayer a mustard seed of faith if you bring the water he will turn it into wine he will meet your need when you offer him the ordinary things that you have in your life is anybody seeing this right here he told the servants bring me the water and i'll do something extraordinary with it jesus will meet your need by using what you already have maybe all you have is one skill one talent one hobby god can change your life and do something extraordinary with the simple things if you will offer them into his hands in service maybe all you've got this morning is a praise is a prayer give god what you have bring him the water and watch him do something extraordinary and supernatural with it now i'm not gonna preach forever so don't get nervous but one of the last things that i want to show you out of this story is maybe one of the most beautiful and it's simply this jesus's first miracle foreshadowed his greatest miracle i'm gonna say that one more time jesus's first miracle foreshadowed his greatest miracle i want you to look back with me to verse 6 really quickly of john chapter 2. standing nearby were six stone water jars used for jewish ceremonial washing each could hold 20 to 30 gallons so i want to read right there what were the six jars used for ceremonial washing in other words before the bride and groom could consummate their marriage before the bride and groom could become one in holy unity they first had to ceremonially wash they had to be purified now watch this jesus doesn't just use any ordinary jars to turn the water into wine he uses the very vessels that exist for purification to perform this miracle and here's the power of this story and i pray that you see it and if you see it you will never see this story the same way again the wine is representative of the blood of jesus that would be shed on calvary's cross for you and for me still to this day the wine represents the blood of christ that was shed for us on the on the cross the wine represents the blood of jesus and when jesus put the new wine in the vessels made for ceremonial washing he was saying throughout the eons of eternity to everybody at that wedding to everybody who would ever read this he was saying my blood will purify your soul from the inside out my blood will purify you once and for all the water in the cleansing in the water it's good but you will only get dirty again but when you experience the blood it purifies you once and forever now forever and always the miracle at the wedding of cana was pointing forward to the blood that would be shed that would provide atonement forgiveness of sin purification once and for ever anybody see the power of this story you see it thank you jesus for the blood thank you that your blood purifies thank you lord and here's the thing i love about this if you read this story jesus didn't just give them just enough wine to make it through the rest of the ceremony the bible indicates that he provided more than enough he provided in abundance in other words his blood will never run out on you no matter how far you've run no matter how dark your sin no matter how far from him you have run the blood is abundant for you and there is more power in one drop of the blood of jesus than a lifetime of mistakes guilt and shame the wedding cana was the announcement that the blood would be shed for you to purify you to cover you once and for all and just like the ceremonial washing prepared the bride and the groom to be won so the blood of jesus doesn't just forgive us of our sin it doesn't just remediate our past but it makes us ready as a bride adorned for her groom that we would be reconciled through relationship with the father this is amazing it's amazing this is the gospel right in front of you and one of my favorite revelations of this story is that just like the groom should have been prepared but he ran out you and i are the groom look at your neighbor and tell them you're the groom even if you're talking to a woman i know it's weird but just just hang with it you're the groom this story is not done preaching to you yes it's the blood of jesus but it's not done preaching it says you're the groom and you ran out you should have been prepared but you weren't you should have been ready but you weren't this was your finest moment but you weren't ready you read out and here what it's doing is the bible's putting you in the place of the groom and it's saying your righteousness ran out your purity has run out your goodness has run out your good works have come up short what does roman say for all have sinned and come short of the glory of god in other words we're all like the groom we're coming up short we're empty we'll run out when we sinned our righteousness was stripped away when we committed lust adultery when we thought prideful arrogant things we read out and we've come up short but this miracle speaks not just of that groom thousands of years ago but it speaks of you today and that where you came up short jesus stepped in and took your place when you had nothing left to give when you would have stood before the judgment seat of god condemned run short of righteousness he steps in and he turns your water your excuses your plans your mistakes into wine he takes what you have to offer god and he steps in and provides for you anybody seeing this today are you seeing it you're the groom i'm the groom we ran out but jesus stepped in and he who knew no sin became sin that you and i might become the righteousness of god in him i got to show you one more thing got one more second even if i don't i'm gonna take it okay there's one more thing here that's phenomenal and i pray you get this the bible says that when the water became wine the servant took that water and he lifted it to the mouth of the master of ceremonies it says water that when the master of ceremonies drank the water that had become wine he said get that bridegroom over here what are you doing you saved the best for last here's what this paint here's the story is paints the master of ceremonies is the father the judge of all creation and at judgment when we stand before him those of us who are born again those of us who have run out of options we've admitted our sin given our life to jesus all of you who are saved who are marked by the blood of jesus every one of you when you stand before the master of the ceremony of your life when you stand before your judge our heavenly father and he tastes of the offering of your life he will approve of you and say well done my good and faithful servant for what i am tasting now is acceptable and it is pleasing unto me and did you see it the groom got the credit for what jesus actually did the groom gets praised by the master of ceremonies for the wine he had nothing to do with it the groom was out here partying out here living out here doing his thing and the master ceremonies calls him over and he's like good job bro and the groom's like for what he got the credit for what jesus did this is the gospel when you stand before the throne of grace because of your faith in jesus he'll taste of your life say well done my good and faithful when all you did was bring him water you didn't deserve it but jesus made the offering in your place and in mine can we just take a moment right now and praise the name of the lord can we lift our voice stand up all over this place stand up with me let's praise the lord let's worship him father we thank you for your goodness we thank you for your word thank you lord that when we ran out you stepped in thank you lord for your blood that covers all sin it is in jesus precious name we pray and everybody said amen in just a moment we're going to take communion together on this sunday we're going to remember the body that was broken for us in the blood that was shed for us that new wine that was shed for us but before we partake of communion i have to tell you this communion is only for those who have asked god for forgiveness of their sin communion is only for believers you say well that's exclusive i thought church should be open to everybody well it is ask the lord to forgive you right now repent of your sin right now receive that wine that new wine receive that blood that was shed for you to forgive you of sin bow your heads and pray with me if you're in this room today and and you know that you've been living in deliberate sin you know that if your life would end right now you would you don't know where you'd spend eternity you don't know if if god would approve of you you don't know because you've never truly asked god for forgiveness and you've never accepted the blood of jesus for your sin if that's you i want you to pray this right now with me father i come to you the best way that i know how and i ask you lord to forgive me of my sin i'm not going to make excuses i'm running out of excuses i'm running out of options and today i admit that i need you i need you to forgive me and cleanse me thank you jesus that you made a way from me where there seemed to be no other way i receive your blood on the cross i receive you jesus as my lord and my savior believe that you were born of a virgin mary you lived a life without sin you died on the cross and you rose again on the third day for me and today this morning right now i ask you to forgive me and i give my life to you in your service in jesus precious name we pray and everybody said amen if you prayed that prayer for the first time or as somebody rededicating and recommitting their life to lord i want to give you a moment to just raise your hand real quick and say that was me that was for me and that's not to embarrass you it's just to recognize you to give you a moment to give you in a second to acknowledge the lord all right at this time if our ushers would come forward i want to pray over the elements i pray that we don't just go through the notions of communion this morning but i pray that as we partake of this we are thankful from the bottom of our heart for the new wine for the blood of jesus that was shed for us and in just a moment when i'm done with this prayer as the elements go by you can take them whenever you're ready the body that was broken and the blood that was shed for you at your own time father we thank you for these elements we thank you for the body and the blood i pray that you would bless these sacraments today and i pray that it would be more than just a ritual but i pray lord that as we partake of your body in your blood that we would announce your gospel until you come that we would worship you lord for what you've done for us because where there was no way when we were out of options you made a way and it's through the precious priceless blood of jesus and lord if we ever question how much we are worth if we ever question how much we mean to you let us reflect on the cup of your suffering your blood it was shed for us lord we love you we honor you in jesus precious name we pray amen [Music]
