today we're going to do a beginner's guide to everything breaks for your vehicle it's going to answer a lot of your questions from should I get cross drilled or slotted across your like you saw in a Ferrari should I get it and blink what type of pad should I get brake lines fluid these are all kinds of things that a lot of people just seem to neglect but it's one of the most important things on your vehicle so let's jump into it okay [Music] hey guys and welcome back to another talking mods um today we are going to be doing a a nice guide for you guys so that we can go directly through the brakes well I'm hoping in the future we'll go into more depth if you guys like this subject um but this is going to be a great beginner's guide in how to pick stuff for you so if you are in need of breaks you're looking to do a replacement or you're looking to just upgrade and try to get you know just a better performance from your brakes and you don't have to spend a whole ton of it which we'll talk about please hit us up at modbargens we have a lot of different components we can get you brakes Wheels body kits all kinds of other stuff now let's just jump right into it and what we'll do is I have here a display model doesn't really matter the brand stop text one of the brands that we've supported over the years we carry Brands like Brembo AP et cetera et cetera it doesn't really matter what I'm going to talk about though is first off the rotors and how to pick the rotors now this rotor is a little bit different here and this is what's called slotted and one of the basic questions that I always see is what type of rotor should I get should I get slotted cross drilled cross drilled meaning there's holes in it we'll have some images for you or just blank or sometimes you'll even have a combination you'll have slotted and then cross drilled and you know so what what does it do let's jump into it here so blank is the way that comes directly from the factory most basic cars unless you own a Supercar it'll come in differently from that Supercar manufacturer but slotted is going to be a very interesting method slotted what it does is almost acts like a like a butter knife Like a Knife directly onto the pad here we've got the pad and every time you're breaking this this does rotate so every time you're braking it gives it a nice clean it cleans up the the surface pad for the brake pad and gives it a nice area for where it will basically as it rotates through it cleans it cleans it up and basically acts as a knife it does wear down your pads um uh quicker so you got to consider that but in terms of performance slotted is going to give you the the best performance possible now you're wondering okay well Ferrari on there on theirs or the McLarens they have cross drilled and like almost everybody I remember this when I was first modifying cars I want cross drill they want cross drill I want cross drilled and it looks like uh a cheese grater when you look at it right because it's got all the all of it um all those holes in it and why is there really a performance difference uh not really in terms of stopping it's not going to help you out in stopping um what it ends up what the advantages are in terms of weight it's negligible because they're trying to reduce the amount of weight by doing cross drill that's negligible sometimes they'll even new dimples um again negligible the only reason for doing cross drilled and you'll see this in form in Formula One they typically use slotted but you'll see them switch to cross drilled when they are in a rain situation why because it the rain during that time it will actually expel the water through so in that kind of situation it has the advantages but slot is going to give you the maximum performance cross drill just looks really good A lot of people just buy for the looks it will destroy your pads even quicker than the slotted I if if you're asking me what I would go for I'd always go for the slotted sometimes they don't provide you with Crossroad because it's structurally not sound so you got to understand that when you're looking for for rotors and you're like oh I want to get cross drilled well sometimes it's not available because it's just not sound blanks do just a great of a job as well now typical rotors that come from your factory are going to be like a one piece type of rotor but there's also a two-piece rotor now here this is a two-piece rotor and what are the advantages and why do we have a two-piece rotor um the two-piece rotor you have here a hat this we'll call this a hat here and we've got the actual rotor which is you know cast iron and so forth but the two are connected rather than being all in one so what are the different advantages so the first the first so so the first reason of why we can we can we we have savings it's not this one's actually not going to be a cast iron like the typical one piece it's actually going to be an aluminum so that's going to save us a lot of weight now remember weight and in this area is unsprung weight so for every one pound it equals 10 pounds off your car that is very significant in racing in terms of handling even if it's just a vehicle that you're daily driving that weight savings is dramatic the other reason is when you have the two separations here if you have the single connection here the the heat there's a ton of heat that happens right it breaks like in a racing situation will go over 1100 degrees so the heat dissipation is a lot better you'll notice that it's connected and what they use here for heat dissipation is a floating point it's called a floating mounting system so they mount it on a on a mounting system uh especially big brake kits or two piece rollers will usually typically have some type of floating system so it expands and contracts right when there's heat and you want to have that you know withstand it so less heat less extreme heat on the rest of the vehicle Less on the wheel hub so you're not burning your wheel hubs you have also less risk of warping [Music] um which is huge and the other and the other advantages are obviously you're going to have you know increased airflow so by having the two-piece design you increase the airflow on the rotors again heat dissipation heat dissipation is huge and cost savings over time because once if the Hat's always kept good then you just replace this unit if if that manufacturer for that rotor it makes it available so you can make it replaceable so it becomes a cost effective but two-piece throws are generally far more expensive let's talk about a different subject now we've covered the rotors and let's go into the pads okay so we talked about the rotors let's talk about the pads right we have the two um things that the one that I generally recommend to most people is going to be an organic pad now organic padding uh breaks that happen well that's going to be on a different type of pad that I'm about to talk about in a little bit [Music] hold up but um so less noise and the most important part is a lot of a lot less wear and tear on this cost you for a pair I don't know about 120 on an organic 160. depending on the brand right and what materials but rotors are going to be a lot more expensive you know rotors will can go from 200 to 600 to you know up to 2000 or maybe even more depending on again two Piece One Piece so um so the other pads let's talk about some of the other pads that are out there there's ceramic pads you know ceramic just like the same as you think of like in your pots pans some watches they have ceramic on them um super popular technology came out in like the 80s um they're still very quiet ceramic um the performance is better um obviously than the organic pads they're generally ceramic pads are generally pretty good in terms of performance right but their costs are a lot higher and the the universality of the usage of it is really not where it's at they're still not the greatest on the rotors most big brake companies like stop Tech Brembo and so forth would generally recommend to you a organic pad so um the combination between if you're thinking oh you know big brake kit and I'm going to spend six thousand dollars but they're going to say get an organic pad because that's that way you get the the maximum life of it so in general we have organic and the other one that I've mentioned which has a lot of noise is metallic metallic is as it sounds is going to have metal in it the more metal that's in it the better your braking is going to be which seems you know it's just the way things work so some people want pads that have less dust and you know this if you bought a BMW if you've owned a bdmw they dust like crazy well dust is a byproduct of performance that is the organic stuff coming out now they make versions of less dust of pads as well again that's what it comes down to what you want of less dust but know that what you're sacrificing is your stopping power but keep in mind noise increases dust increases metallics are not crazy expensive which is nice but you do destroy your rotor life quicker and I typically recommend it for a guy who's tracking or needs that high performance all right I didn't cover here carbon brakes or rotors and stuff that's a very expensive option you know you're looking at ten to twenty thousand dollars plus with you know it comes with Ferraris or it's I think it's an extra option with Ferraris McLarens and so forth supercars I'm talking here in general for most vehicles and how it's done now you're upgrading your brakes right so that's the pads what and one of the things to remember is if you are switching out just the pads and your rotors have um maintained their life you might need to resurface it why if you've ever remember again back to that screeching noise if the two compounds are not touching correctly at exactly flat right so let's say there was a little bit of warping and you've had some heat issues and you put a new pad on there right that that new pad is perfectly flat and your rotor might have just the slightest little wobble that little bit right in there that little air pocket will create that screeching noise that you always hear right so when a person is breaking doesn't mean the car is not working it's just air and so forth or sometimes they have a rock lodged in there can get in there and it can create that noise the other thing that will tell you if a pad is time to be replaced is what's called your brake sensors most Vehicles I'm thinking almost all vehicles these days have brake sensors within them what it is is actually a line that goes inside it's it's connected into the brake sensor area and as the pad I'm going to rotate this here as the pad wears down eventually it will hit that brake sensor it will hit that brake sensor it's a it's this like um it's it's encapsulated by this plastic compound but basically and there's a metal it basically sends a signal once it cuts it it's a one-time use um so once it cuts that break um that that brake sensor you got to throw it out you got to put in a new one so if you want to save money and you're let's say you're doing some maintenance on your car you always want to check your pads the pad life what's remaining because if you can catch it before that you won't have to buy new brake sensors and that's just a way to save some additional money so a nice tip for you guys okay the other one that I really like and often gets overlooked by most people and they think it's only for racing is brake lines the standard brake lines and this was an interesting as I was doing some research coming into this video the standard brake lines as you know they they use like a rubber base they're actually only rated up for six years I ended up finding out which was pretty surprising to me so you do need to replace your brake lines every six year is if you switch them out to a stainless stainless steel brake lines that's the lifetime of the vehicle number one but stainless steel brake lines have a lot of other advantages besides just you know wear and tear lasting they also change the way the brake feel happens that's the number one thing so brakefield where you feel more confident and I talk about that a lot with suspension but your brakes are also what changes your confidence when you're driving a vehicle so when you have that brakefield and you know exactly how much power to put down how much power is going to what you're going to get back from your brakes that comes from your brake lines so again brake lines are a nice thing they're not expensive to to get there are plenty of options for all vehicles out there to to upgrade those and lastly before I talk about anything like bonus wise or anything like that lastly the thing when you're switching out your brakes is your brake fluid now most of the brake fluids that come on your vehicle do last a considerable amount of time but they do have a shelf life and there is a boiling point and what does that mean that means so again we got to cool down the brakes right everything's about cooling this is a ton of heat here that happened right as you can imagine metal on metal stopping the whole car so brake fluid is brake fluid is what we use for to to dissipate that heat right so it has you can go to higher versions of it which is like a DOT 5.5.1 and so forth where we have like Brands like motool which is 600 um 600 Fahrenheit boiling point it just you want to go to higher levels all right I know this video is kind of long um I'll probably do a brake brake kit at a different time basically there's a lot of top brands the basic thing that I will say about big brake kits I've talked about in a previous video is the amount of Pistons there are different amount of pistons and how the Pistons are used one thing you want to watch out for is companies that say oh 16 Pistons but they're a bunch of small pistons when they can rather be one big piston so if I have a bunch of small ones it's more likely to fail and it's just trying to be marketing stuff so watch out for that and last bonus and this is really simple one of the most overlooked areas in our aftermarket industry and again I've been doing this for a long time but um and often and overlooked by a lot of people is again it goes back to cooling is getting brake ducts there's just not a lot of products out there for brake decks I'm hoping manufacturers come out with more brake ducts but getting brake ducts and getting more air and more cooling on here which you see on a lot of sports cars would do amazing for all vehicles across the board if it's factored in and designed with it that's kind of my bonus if you have brake ducts it really does make huge improvements to your brakes anyway guys I love your comments please share below this is obviously a beginner's guide I hope that we can do maybe an interview with uh some like someone from Brembo or someone else to get you guys more information if you guys are interested in it please post down below if if you guys are interested and share this with other people because this is how we keep this going as always if you haven't subscribed please do so and I appreciate your guys's time I'll see you on the next one [Music] thank you
