James what's on your fallback list racist in Idaho I mean when you saw it happen Women's Basketball team was been playing in Spokane and it was staying in a place across Idaho border and people were going by pickup trucks yelling racial rep at them and that's the kind of stuff that just every time that we think maybe we're inching toward a postracial world these jerks pull you back into the world you actually live in I I I you know all right I was the favorite of Megan Kelly and Jesse Waters of what we talked about on your show about preachy female I would rather spend the next thousand years in a Humanities Lounge at Berkeley and spend one minute with those people and I don't I can promise you that right now yeah that's a real comparison For You especially and it's sad when you see it you know we talk about politics is so divisive but it's also quite sad when you see uh sports or culture places that we could come together and then those people the the racist and the hate mongers use it to take over and those way they were good we we beat them last year to go to the final four they lost the game they they had to move them out of the hotel they had to take them to Spokan and and another interesting thing happened the Gonzaga men's basketball team was playing in Detroit and they started they were in a bus and some Republican jerk said that they were migrants coming in here they were basketball players at a Jesuit university I mean that that's how much some sometimes the racism in this country just slaps you right in the face and say we're here dude and okay yeah it's a wake up call for those who are in denial about it if if they're listening that's that's a good one what's on your list well speaking of slapping in the face I mean the misogyny present here in New York Ari this last week on Tik Tok there's been a trend of showing videos of women who have been injured walking down the street minding their own business sometimes looking at their phone when they are literally socked in the face by someone they've never known or never met the misogyny of this world sometimes slaps me in the face and it has been slapping women across the city in the face literally and metaphorically and sometimes I'm stunned by the sexism in the world that we still encounter and the way in which it interacts with the racism as a Idaho every time that you think this is behind us you find out is definitely not behind us but what is good is people expose this kind of thing Michelle Obama said when they go low we go high I'll tell you this about fallback when they go heavy I go light okay so this is important um but my fallback for this week is very light but I see it all the time I see it more often using a phone in a public P Place subway subway stop I see it in New York on a train to play your volume oh yeah this I'm calling I'm using this platform to call for this to fall back I understand if you forgot your headphones I understand if you're busy but unless it is an emergency like audio from the doctor or your kids or something I've seen people pull up the other day I saw someone listening to a newscast I'm glad people want to listen to news playing at high volume in the subway Lisa you've been on a New York Subway I okay there's 40 people packed together and one person's doing this and I had two thoughts one I I need this to fall back into two I thought is anyone going to say anything and nobody did so we all are living with the tyranny of the loud phone that's my fall back Ione box that's I weigh in in I think that there everywhere in the country okay for some reason they're probably a greater percentage in Manhattan but I don't know that of people who think they're the only people in the world they just carry on a conversation doesn't matter who's around them they walk in the middle of the street all right they just they just so self absorbed no that's not majority a but but a lot of people you encounter around the country where there and you see them on airplanes a lot and they got these little ear things and they trading stocks on the phone or something like man shut up yeah we all have to hear it yeah yeah I'm not no one you're not the only person will you join us in this fallback I will I will also acknowledge to James that there's a lot of main character energy in this city in which we live I am guilty of it some sometimes too I'm not going to say that I'm not but yes please lower your phones when you're on the subway right yeah it's a lot yeah any other big differences Before I Let You Go James between New York and the rest of the world every time I come to New York City it makes me proud to be in America hey I I I cannot I was 33 first time I ever came here and I was on Central Park South it was December and it was it's like 30° which man people move around here I like this okay and I I just flying in here and you you come in and you see the postcard and you go damn man I like that place I love that and and I do and I bet I love New Orleans I love all of the other places in the world but I've I've never understood why to be a real America and you had to dislike New York I think that New York is the Great American accomplishment I really do and I don't mean I'm not panding I I actually mean that and you see and you come in and you you see it and you know you see l Manhattan and you see Midtown you see the park you see Northern Manhattan you see the whole thing and you just my heart you know my heart break goes up a little bit I'm I'm honest with you I do Lisa final word how can you top that the man has endorsed the city in which you and I both live and chose to live I'm not from here originally I'm from California San Fernando Valley where I had an accent of my own that I think I've shed after about 20 something years but I love it here I hit the ground here when I was 18 years old on a trip and thought oh thank God and never want to leave so only thing I've shared his hair well there you have it uh James Carver Lisa ruin on a fallback on more than one topic thanks to both of you both parties have their presumptive nominees but in a development that few would have actually imagined as recently as January 2021 when Republican politicians condemned the violent attacks by Maga fans who Lally sent as you see there politicians scurrying for safety now one candidate is campaigning in favor of that Crim spree Donald Trump promising to help convict a January 6 riers falsely calling them hostages when they go through the justice system and as the AP reports Trump's making the January 6th attack a Cornerstone of his campaign lying about it arguing it's a good thing and quote positioning the violent Siege as a Cornerstone of his campaign the AP is nonpartisan of course it reports that Trump has used rallies to salute while a recording plays of prisoners in jail for their roles in the Jan 6 attack sing the national anthem an announcer summons the crowd to honor those criminals falsely referring to them again as quote hostages while Trump floats the idea of pardoning them these are extreme Lawless positions taken against the US government all of this echoing the divisions from the Civil War to Jim Crow when some people maybe not all Americans but some Americans and their leaders openly plot against the federal government now there are some Arch conservative Republicans who argue that Trump's Jan 6 obsession is bad for the country and also bad politics for Republicans take President Bush's White House veteran Carl Rove he has run many republican campaigns many winning ones by the way he currently works as a Fox News analyst which is one of those deals that keeps him off other channels although I recently interviewed him and some other Republicans at the Rancho Mirage Writers Festival I talked to Mr Ro and former Trump Chief of Staff Ryan prus and another Trump White House veteran known for her January 6 testimony Cassidy huteson you can see us there now for K Rove I asked him about January 6 enduring and really now shifting role in this campaign he said something interesting he argues democrats should actually go even harder at Trump's Lawless stance and the vow to Pardon what Rove and you're about to see this what Mr Rove calls Maga thugs not hostages I got to tell you we get to talk to a lot of people and we try to get sourcing and information from a lot of people especially those who have served in government when we do interviews this one was pretty striking I'm going to share Mr Ro's new remarks at some length right now for you here airing on the beat for the first time if they were smart they' take the January 6th and go hard at it and they would say he wants to Pardon these people who attacked our capital I worked in that building as a young man to me the Congress of the United States is one of the great examples of the strength of our of our democracy and a jewel of the Constitution and what those people did when they violently attacked the capital in order to stop a constitu mandated meeting of the Congress to accept the results of the Electoral College is a stain on our history and every one of those sons of who did that we ought to find them try them and send them to jail and and if and if and one of the critical mistakes made in this campaign is that Donald Trump has now said I'm going to Pardon those people because they're hostages no they're not they're thugs there were people some of them had automatic weapons at a hotel in Virginia to be able to be called up we had people saying where's Nancy Pelosi we had people who were you know taking desks and sitting at the desk of the speaker of the house and attempting to you know find people in order to bring them to justice and saying to the to yelling at the police kill them kill them all and so why Trump has done this is beyond me if he had said you know what I trust our jury system I trust law enforcement anybody who assaulted the capital ought to be I mean he said it once or twice but now he's got he's appearing in in a video with people who assaulted police officers with an intent to take the capital by force so you know look I'm a republican I don't want to have a Democrat president I want to have a Republican president but we're facing as a country a decision and you all everybody gets to make it as to what kind of leadership we're going to have and to me it is a mistake on the part of the Trump campaign to allow the president's impulses to identify himself with the people who assaulted the capital rather than people who stand for Law and Order very clear rebuke there Bush veteran Carl Ro confronting mag's Lawless thuggery as he put it shredding Republican party's claim to any Law and Order and Ro as he often does mixing that with his own sort of political math he said it's wrong and he also said it's going to fail for the Republicans in November we should mention Donald Trump has attacked Carl Ro for other comments he's been earlier this year this matters both on the substance as I mentioned but also clearly the politics Trump needs to consolidate his Republican base to have any hope of making up his deficit against Biden from 2020 and if he can't keep prominent Fox News conservatives like KL Ro on his side over this issue that may matter now I mention all the sources we try to hear from when we do our reporting taking up Trump's defense on that same panel as the man you see here in the pathway of power and the halls of power and the actual Oval Office in fact I'm going to leave this photo up for a moment both men you see here were with Donald Trump through January 6 one now completely ostracized after facing the death threats that Donald Trump on court against him former vice president Pence the other Ryan Prius still very much in the Maga Camp Mr pus also ran the RNC also on this panel was a republican who joined the Liz Cheney wing of the house January 6 committee you may remember Adam kinginger so right now I also want to play some more from that same panel including part of preuses trump defense it's a group of people that in one way shows the range of potential Republican party leadership but also shows how the less Maga members are habitually driven out aing for the first time here are those highlights and Joe Biden's message is going to be I'm not for Trump we don't want Trump we can't have the chaos of trump both candidates face the likelihood of losing part of what they had last time around but they also look at Joe Biden and say yeah but the econom is no good there's crime everywhere on Biden's side he's got a problem in that he first of all is lacking enthusiasm among black Hispanic and young voters Donald Trump in 2016 he was the biggest middle finger that the American people could find and they found it and I actually think that people are more Angry to today than they were in 2016 for Trump the problem is is that last time around he lost 8% of Republicans and was 7 million votes short in the popular vote if he is found guilty in something even if it's the New York business case it's going to have a an effect this is as high stakes poker as it gets I mean if I think if the president gets acquitted on one of these items I think it's going to be even his chances of winning are going to be even greater the election cannot be one merely among Republicans if you think that Trump being found guilty by the Attorney General's investigation in New York is going to sway the the independent voters in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania and North Carolina good luck cuz I don't think it is most people uh don't care about any of these issues I think you want them to I think you wish they would this is not I'm let I'm going to let him finish not this is not the 1990s electorate this is 2024 where division is profit and unity is a loser if IID done what he did we'd be having this in the visitors room at Fort lenworth quote division is profit and unity is a loser well you're getting a pretty direct view there from people who have been to the very top and want to go back to the top in the white house with Donald Trump while Ro again hit that January 6 crime Stree prus is insisting most voters are not following these democracy issues the way informed or as some would put it Elite citizens May and those primaries do show Trump has not fixed the cracks in his base from the Haley showing that we saw in the early States one in five of Republicans voting against Trump when he has the only position on the ballot left you see those are some important States like Florida Ohio Republicans saying straight up they don't plan to back him in November these are the stakes and there are people who want to lie to you and make it all disappear or become a kind of confusing soup so when you hear someone like Carl Ro who if you've been watching the news for a minute you might remember was one of the architects of the right-wing Texas Republican Revolution when you lost Carl Rove are you on your way to a big Coalition if there is a free and fair election that's one of the big questions and as for Mr Prius he argues and we gave him time to make his point that these are over served over indexed East Coast Elite type concerns the people in democracy in New York and a few other pockets might discuss endlessly while the vast majority of Voters he says are focused on other topics we will find out but we hope to be informed along the way hey everyone MSNBC has a new and improved app you'll get realtime alerts
