Legally you’re not required to show them a receipt upon leaving the store. Their recourse is to ban you from future visits. Guy is a dick but he doesn’t have to consent to anything and the store is violating the law detaining him.

My Hubbie and I refused to show a receipt when we purchased a large boxed item and some other items from Walmart. (He hates Walmart but I drag him there every now and again). They tried to hem us up. My husband pointed to the cash register and told them to check the cameras but was adamant that they would not view our receipt. When they threatened to call to police he said “please, I want you to. Please prove to me I stole anything in this cart”. They called the manager and we refused. Took us 25 minutes before they gave in,

Stores like Walmart and Home Depot have this policy in place to save money, pure and simple. They could spend more money on effective anti-theft measures, but instead they cheap out and have some guy at the exit check your receipt. It is not my obligation to make Walmart or any other stores' job "easy" - I bought my shit, I don't have anything else to do with you, fuck off.
