we're going to start this show with a short tale of terror a young moroccan man works as a shoemaker and that's a very small shop where he also lives with a nice old woman at times moroccan women would come to the shop and on meeting these two friendly people they'd agreed to have lunch with them that was the worst decision those women would ever make because it would be their last decision the food was drugged and the young man would kill them in their sleep but not before taking their money in valuables when he was finally arrested the cops dug up 26 mutilated bodies under that shop and another 10 bodies close by suffice to say this shocked morocco and the rest of the world this guy had to be punished in the worst way possible but just how far could the authorities take punishment in 1906 let us explain so the serial killer was named hajj muhammad mespewi and he became known as the marrakech arch killer the police found 36 bodies but the man might have killed many more women the crime of killing innocent people for their valuables is bad enough but when the news came out that he'd used a dagger with much enthusiasm after the drugged women had fallen asleep well the public screamed for blood the killer was originally sentenced to be crucified but in the early 20th century that kind of punishment was not exactly in fashion the moroccan government eventually acceded to the wishes of foreign diplomats who had said something like come on guys this is the 20th century crucifixion is so two millennia ago the moroccan authorities agreed not to crucify the killer but that didn't mean mr miss fuey was going to be hanged like he would have been in most countries nope they said you mr killer of innocent ladies are going to be walled up this particular punishment isn't that hard to explain to you but as you'll later see being walled up has different degrees of property the punishment is sometimes called emirmit which in latin means in-wall anyway before we get to the various types of ameerment let's finish this serial killer tale according to some newspaper clippings from back then prior to being walled up the guy was publicly whipped every day there's no actual description as to what his death house looked like such as if it had an eye-catching terracotta tiled roof or a seat to sit on so we guess it was just four cement walls the newspaper clipping that cited the most said this man could actually be heard screaming for two days things that went quiet around the third day as things tend to do when a person has no water it's quite typical for humans to die after going three days without water and we'll go out on a limb and say miss fuey's house didn't have ac if he sweated a lot he would have obviously dehydrated faster you might now be thinking could it get any worse than that but you guys know that our team of fabulous researchers at the infographic show always have surprises waiting for you so we'll start with some cases from the ancient past and finish with more modern cases we could go back to ancient egypt and ancient china to have a look at something sometimes called a retainer sacrifice the concept is simple enough when a powerful person say an emperor or pharaoh died they believed that they would live an afterlife in the spiritual realm of course they didn't want to turn up to that afterlife empty-handed and that's why some powerful people would be buried with all kinds of riches but those guys also wanted their servants in the afterlife so unfortunately when a powerful person died his servants might have to be walled up with him this was not uncommon by any means can you even imagine the conversation in the tomb as perhaps 10 to 20 people sit next to their dead leader this wasn't exactly seen as punishment but hey we at the infographic show were gonna say that it definitely must have felt that way we guessed they were told that they should have been proud that they were heading to the afterlife with their great leader those walled up with the leader might also have been artisans lovers poets or officials so back then being close to the big guys might have meant an early death there's evidence that when one of the great cons of the mongol empire died he'd requested on his deathbed that he'd be buried with four female slaves and six of his favorite mamluks with a few vessels of drink a mamluk was a non-muslim slave soldier by the way you can find other examples of cemeteries from the early dynastic period of egypt those cemeteries have been excavated and the tombs of kings have been found but next to the royal tombs other rooms were found and in those were skeletal remains of people who experts said died before the age of 25 these people might have actually chosen to be walled in although they might not have had much choice in the matter from inscriptions it's obvious that a lot of buried men who went down with the king were high-ranking officials and that would certainly have put us off the job but things in ancient egypt were a little different from how we do things now things seem to change after a time because excavators have found statues and tombs that represented people close to kings not the actual people's bones over in japan a certain type of buddhist monk would actually ask to be emirate this was a kind of sacrifice this is what a famous sociologist once wrote about that the secretarians of amida have themselves a mirrored in caverns where there's barely any space to be seated and where they can breathe only through an airshaft there they quietly allow themselves to die of hunger maybe the most disturbing account we found about people being a mirrored with dead leaders was written by an english writer named harold edward binless he said on his travels in southern nigeria he witnessed the burial of a powerful tribal leader this guy had several wives and when the leader died all those wives had their legs broken after that they were mirrored with their dead husband then in ancient rome you had these girls called vestal virgins they were pure of mind and body and they had to remain virgins but what if they broke that vow of celibacy well since it was against the law to spill the blood of one of these pure women the romans decided the best thing for them would be a myrmid they would build a small vault in the ground and even put a chair in there we know this because the romans were formidable historians they actually called the tomb where the girls were kept the campus celeratus which means something like evil field these victims were given some food and water but then the lid of the vault was closed and within a few days they would perish sometimes that place where the person was left to die was nothing but a small wooden box in 1922 national geographic published a disturbing photo of a mongolian woman who'd been sentenced to death by amirment it's not clear what the woman did to deserve this and reports that she was confined that way for adultery have been disputed this photo is very much real though sometimes people will be fed within prison walls but they would eventually die over a period of time we found this newspaper report from 1914 describing mongolian prison ameerment the prisons and dungeons of the far eastern country contain a number of refined chinese shut up for life in heavy iron bound coffins which do not permit them to sit upright or lie down these prisoners see daylight for only a few minutes daily when the food is thrown into their coffins through a small hole then we found a book written by a 17th century gem merchant who traveled around the world the guy's name was jean-baptiste taverner and what he wrote about amirment in persia is nothing short of terrifying he said the punishment would often be meted out on thieves and the difference this time would be that the bricks would be built around the person's body but his head would stick out of the top these coffins would be constructed for everyone to see to deter other people stealing in his own words tavinir wrote that the reason the head was left out was not because someone was being kind to the condemned but because this would expose them to the injury of the weather and assaults of the birds of prey being pecked to death by a large bird would certainly be a bad way to go a similar thing happened when an ottoman governor in today's lebanon and palestine was in charge his name was jizar pasha and when he built the new walls of beirut in the late 18th century he had many greek christians walled in it's written that he too left the head sticking out but only because he wanted to enjoy their agony himself in the early 20th century another writer would talk about his travels to persia one such writer named m.e hume griffith wrote a book called behind the veil in persia and turkish arabia this is how he described ameerment another sad sight to be seen in the desert sometimes are brick pillars in which some unfortunate victim is walled up alive men breaked up in this way have been heard groaning and calling for water at the end of three days in the 17th century there were accounts of problems of secession in the mughal empire members of families fought with other family members and in one case a man named arangzeb was victorious in one of those disagreements he had a half-brother that he didn't get along with very well and then half-brother sought protection from another powerful family it's a long story but in the end arangzub had his half-brother's male children beheaded and he had mirrored his female children those girls eventually died of starvation now you might be wondering if this had ever happened in europe and the answer is yes it did we only know this because skeletons have been found inside tombs that were hidden in various castles or inside prison walls such a skeleton was found in a place in england called thornton abbey that skeleton was found alongside a book a table and a candlestick it's believed that the condemned man was an abbot and he had committed some kind of crime he was placed inside that small room and then it was walled up actually all of our europe skeletons have been found inside compartments and castles and other buildings we know these people were murdered because they were found in places that had no doors we found a case in sweden in which a holy man had been immured from making love to a woman something he had vowed not to do an english author named sir nathaniel raxel the first baronet was witness to this and he wrote that the man died after a few days apparently they let him survive for a few weeks by feeding him eggs and some water through a small hole in fact you can find lots of examples of holy people being a mirrored for breaking their vows of chastity we found examples of this happening to nuns around europe in the 13th and 14th centuries a practice which was sometimes called vaden pache that basically meant go in peace the difference with this was usually that the person would be fed through a small hole and sometimes be kept alive for years then there were the ascetics who asked to be walled in this was their penance and it showed just how much they were willing to sacrifice in the name of god they would be given scraps of food and enough water to survive and the accounts differ because some sources say these people were walled in but other sources state that they just lived in total seclusion perhaps the most disturbing ameerman stories are when children are buried inside the walls of churches and other buildings the reason for this punishment might have been because the parents had committed a crime but at times the children were sacrificed as a way to appease god we found cases of the remains of children and adults being found in the walls of churches castles and city walls in germany so that's a myrmet for you possibly the least painful way to die that we've talked about in this series of punishment shows still we wonder how many people would take a miramint over some other punishments we've described in the past how many of you dear viewers would prefer ameerment to other forms of execution please tell us what you think in the comments section
