do you wake up in the morning and feel disappointed straight away you wake up and you look at your phone and your youtube channel hasn't grown overnight and your heart it just sinks no new subs no more views or even if there are not as many as you'd hoped well you're not alone the good news is that there is a change you can make now that can make a big difference to your channel and actually in many cases it might not take that long to start working so this channel for example implemented this and that's what happened and then another channel did the same and then this happened but on a cautionary note well this channel which was flying did the opposite of what i'm about to tell you and well this happened so this video isn't about just getting more views and subscribers but actually we'll make sure that you don't hold back your channel's growth or worse damage it and that thing is this to get more views by the morning you need to understand who your target audience is and what they are really interested in the annoying thing about this is if i ask you who your target audience is the answer can't be anyone because it's pretty much impossible to make videos of interest to absolutely everyone and if you try it's probably one of the reasons why your channel's not getting views by the morning let me give you an example of why a target audience is never just anyone now let's say you want to open a pizza restaurant because you love pizza let's face it 90 of the world loves pizza right so one day you open up and the first guest comes in and they sit down and they say can i get a fat based veggie pizza and you say oh sorry madam we only do fat meat pizzas turns out this entire town is 85 vegetarian due to the great cow attack of 92 and meat strikes fear into their hearts so every time they see your restaurant they just walk past it because they know that that restaurant is not of interest to them a few weeks later thin based veggie pizza land opens up next door and by the end of the year the restaurant is so successful that they have queues of people waiting to come in and then these people just come back every day because the pizzas are so perfect for them and now the town's just getting obese so even though most people on planet earth like pizza we're not just massive fans of pizza itself we have a favorite so in the pizza situation the target audience was vegetarian thin crust pizza lovers it was not pizza itself so it's your job to work out what your target audience is really really interested in just like veggie pizza land to the point they would almost cue to watch your content so let's just relate that to youtube to try and make a little more sense of it let's say you have a fishing channel and you made loads of videos about fishing fly fishing sea fishing rods bait all that sort of stuff and you realize that the videos that did best were always about night fishing so you say okay i'm gonna niche down and i'm gonna make lots more videos about night fishing but you're still waking up and you've not grown overnight so why might that be well this is because youtube isn't about making videos for a niche but simply making videos that people are interested in videos that keep people coming back to the platform for more so in order to do this there is another level to consider using the example the viewers were interested in night fishing but what do they really really really care about within those videos because there will be one thing that sticks out to them more than anything else so for this audience the one thing they really care about is probably that they just want to catch more fish at night right which means that a video titled the best night fishing rod might not get the same traction as a video called the rod that will catch you 10 times more fish at night this is because your viewer might not want to buy a new rod when you make that video they're happy with theirs but they're not happy with the amount of fish they catch and they probably never will be so they're way more likely to click watch and listen to a video that sounds like it solves their never ending problem rather than one about a problem they don't really have yet and you can assume this topic will get more traction as most night fishing fans will want to catch more fish we can't possibly ever know when people might need a new rod so do you see the difference there once you have your niche you now need to work out the thing the viewers are really interested in within it rather than just keep making videos for a niche have a look at this so this channel i work with who made videos for their niche the channel grew and got views and that's okay it was picking up about 500 subs a month so it wasn't really failing but this is what happened when we switched and said what do your viewers really care about right now what interests them so much that when a video pops up on this topic on youtube it will not only catch their eye but they won't be able to resist clicking on it and that spike was the result of realizing what those people cared about that much within the niche and the channel was now growing at 1700 subscribers a month a few months later so how do you work out who your viewers are and what they're interested in so the first step you need to write down the age location of sex who you think your viewers are so if you already have data in your youtube studio then all you need to do is go to the audience tab you can see the age location and the sex of your existing view you might be thinking these are not the right people for me and that's a sign that your channel could be going in the wrong direction or it might be absolutely perfect either way you need to get that down remember the more specific the better here you don't want your target audience's age range to be 18 to 69 even if those people are interested in your topic because the way you talk to an 18 year old very different the interests of an 18 year old and a 60 year old within the niche will be different too and then if you already have videos look for some more clues so go in and see what got the most views in the last 30 days from your new releases what's your most viewed videos if the videos are getting the most views are on the same topic it's a sign that here might be a good place to start don't worry you can start from scratch with these steps too then you want to write down a list of the things you think that your target audience are most interested in write down the problems that they have that they want solving in life from your youtube content and now i know this might sound weird this next bit but write down what this person in your mind does every day and seriously write down the first thing they do when they get up what they have for breakfast what's on their mind when they wake up what they watch whilst they eat what they do all day what they do on their lunch break how often they come to youtube what devices you think they watch on and you can get that data in your youtube studio anyway and then write down what they do for work what books they read websites they visit how much they earn what other channels they watch inside and outside of your niche if they're married they have children their goals in life what fears they have what excites them it's a lot of things right and you might not have any idea at all yet which is okay but you just need to know that you've got to try and establish these over time because once you know this you'll only make videos people are interested in so what happens when you do this is firstly you'll start coming up with video topics a lot easier because just writing this down will get you thinking you'll also have a checklist for your ideas because if you're using a tool to find out keywords and how much search interest there is you could see a topic looks like an amazing one to cover but it still might not be the ideal thing that your viewers in particular care about the thing that they'll click on just because lots of other people do so this information will make every decision you make more targeted and this is what happens when you do this no this video you're watching right now so i started off just doing exactly this writing down what did my target audience think about the moment they wake up and i thought well if they're like me they go on youtube and see if their channel grew overnight thing is i didn't plan this video based on that at all i just had it in my mind as a result of trying to establish what people cared about but the next day i was watching a video and i was reading the comments below it and someone had written a comment about how upsetting it was to wake up to no growth on youtube in the morning and there were tons of likes and comments and people joining in the conversation and agreeing and then a few days later i was chatting to someone else and they said exactly the same thing so having this in mind made me find clues to content i thought you might be interested in so there was a video topic that well let's see how it does that would have gone unnoticed if i hadn't spent the time to go to that almost odd level of detail you see the details are not there for you to make videos about but to help you get into the shoes of your viewers and it will make you more alert to the things that you were once not what's crazy is youtube itself actually states that its sole purpose is to get people to watch videos they are interested in and to keep them coming back to the platform for more which means unless you know exactly what those people care about it's very hard to do what youtube wants you to do as a creator and just like this graph here that shoots up a ton really quick when you do what youtube wants and your viewers want you'll get rewarded which brings us on to the next issue and that is just knowing what your audience is interested in a lot is the first step the second is making videos they watch for as long as possible and that means you need to learn how to make videos that keep people interested so that all starts of course with the topic and the title and making sure that straight away your content lives up to the title here are some tips you can try that will hold people's attention and as a result will grow your channel in your sleep the first thing is to think about first impressions if a viewer has never seen you before they're not gonna be there thinking i'm gonna give this person tons of chances they're gonna have a reason that they hit play on the video based on the title and the thumbnail interesting them and you just need to live up to that fast so that means making it all about them the viewer now you should hopefully be working out what your ideal viewers are all about and that means you can tailor your intro to them and their interests and then get to the point fast don't ask people to subscribe at the start or like the second they land on your channel or tell them what your channel's about you need to let them know they're going to find exactly what they see here so a simple method of doing this is just to say what they'll learn if they stick about or if your video is entertainment based cut out one of the most interesting snippets of your video from later on and start with that the second thing is your production sticking to first impressions how you appear on screens kind of important i know a lot of channels grow with a basic setup and basic's okay but just remember viewers will judge you it's just what we do so a messy background or a shelf with a weird photo on that kind of distract from the thing the viewer's really interested in won't keep your viewer hooked onto what you have to say so if you've got no kit up your production at the very least remove anything the viewer could judge even more the next thing is you really need to have a point so this might sound really obvious but a common mistake for new channels especially is just to make a video where they talk to the camera and it's about multiple things that are not really that linked now the viewer will have come to your channel with an interest and the chances are multiple unrelated things was not that interest now i know youtube makes this harder because they reward longer watch times but every second counts here so you have to stay on target to what that title is all about and then let's get editing now editing plays a massive role in keeping people interested i know people do seem to get quite far with videos that kind of look super simple and that they haven't been edited that much but what you don't see is what they cut out editing isn't just about tricks and funky things and graphics it's about removing information that gets in the way of what your viewers true interest is i guarantee you by the time i've edited this video it will be five minutes shorter yeah it was seven minutes edit out anything that does repeat itself or waffle on a ton or even stumbles that distracts from the message now you don't have to be the perfect presenter but doing doing um oh what was i saying uh oh yeah do it no doing this will stop your the content and people could potentially be put off and leave and then you just need to keep learning how to make better videos so look at your audience retention percentage in your youtube studio and see how long people watch for so i tend to aim for 60 retention on every video i make which is pretty hard and i don't hit it all the time but let me tell you a little secret so long as you keep an eye on this and try new things to try and improve your attention eventually you will make videos that do just this and i'm going to give you a little tip for free if you change location when you're talking to camera kind of like i've been doing throughout this whole video retention increases no seriously i've been testing this on my other channel i don't go mad with location changes i just move about a bit and i talk to the camera in different places and it really does hold people for longer and you can see yes there's an initial drop off but then after that point people really just seem to hang around and it makes sense right just watching someone talk to camera could be a bit boring which leads me on to adding text chapters and graphics to help break your videos up a little bit now this is tried and tested and it will boost your attention and then the result of that will be more views when you wake up in the morning there is so much to learn with youtube if i could start again there is one thing and one thing only i would focus on more than anything and that would be working out who my target audience is as fast as i could but what if what if you've been making videos for a while now is it too late to fix the audience problem that you might have well in the next video i'm going to show you a potential solution which might terrify you but it could be something you need to seriously consider to wake up in the morning with more views and to grow your channel faster and unfortunately for us that means removing some of our most viewed videos
