professional cycling team mechanics have one of the toughest jobs within the world of cycling they're responsible for cleaning servicing repairing preparing and tuning some of the most expensive and high-tech bikes used by some of the fastest Riders on the [Music] planet before the start of the Jiro ditalia Vima Lisa bike gave us unrestricted access to their mechanics truck for a tour where the mechanics were prepping all of the bikes ready for the race acting as my tour guide was Martin one of the mechanics so let's head inside and see what's going on you can see you here in the this my bike truck mechanics uh working on the on the bikes preparing for the for the J so the first thing you can see is bikes and wheels everywhere yeah but there is a system okay it's obviously the system yeah like you can see here on the right it's uh are the race bikes for the first stage and then here on the on my left you have two rows for the for yeah the spare bikes for the cars so they're going onto the cars I see they got spare r on them yes and then is what about the wheels we got wheels this side and wheels left side and different deck yeah like here on the left we have the the high uh the high wheels like Sprint Wheels um and on the right we have the climbing wheels and the average Wheels okay average height so you got three different sizes to choose from yeah okay how so sorry when it comes to choosing between what wheels are going in the bikes how do the Riders choose do the staff choose uh the staff makes a a plan up front like uh at the office they uh they have a look at the the stage the altitude meters the what kind of roads and then they they make a plan and they share it with the Riders up front yeah and then also the Riders can give their their feedback if they want see a difference but most the times they agree what uh yeah the plan what we made from okay so what about some of the tools and Spares that you've got in the truck we got loads of storage up here yeah like uh I can show you yeah like here we have uh some bars and seat post oh wow see here what's in this is way better than I thought it was I thought you were going to just go like that n and then it's all like organized here BS handlebars for the R5 yeah different sizes so many handlebars handlebars stems steps you got all the different options can I press a [Music] yes okay that's possibly the coolest thing so um you got all the battery charges there obviously keep all the SRAM equipment charged up ready to go and then if we move further along what's going on on the other end yeah like here we have more uh more yeah like here L of small parts yeah headset bearings spacers screws brake pads loads okay yeah labeled and different lengths of uh F extensions yeah drills air tools chain Rings how many chain Rings you got in there oh yeah loads all ones different sizes uh 52 54 okay also this thing is cool talk to me about this yeah is this the a brake beding machine okay so this spins the wheel really fast and then you pull the brake yeah yeah okay so that means that the bike um the bike is ready to go new brakes in for the ride haven't got them in when they go Okay and like now because we have here all new rotors we need to B in all the wheels so that's uh do you have to do this job or one pass no we do it together okay so what tools have we got in here park tools anything that you can need Park Tool is like our cool supplier do all of the different mechanics have their own toolbox yeah we all have the own toolbox who's is this one this is from BS the guy who was working here where's where's your toolbox my toolbx is outside okay what else else we got washing machine washing machine dryer um air conditioning SL heater so we can make it uh in the summer heat today yeah yeah and in the summer we can make it nice cold okay cleaners lubricants yeah coffee machine coffee as well yeah look how many car keys you got small yeah small fridge for drinks for us what have you got Fanta Coke yeah beer for it's a good day yeah after work after work okay um maybe this is nice Airline is cool yeah like the to to dve the bikes after they get the wash uhhuh normally the wash is always done outside and then after they come here to uh to be dried and checked maybe this is also cool to show yeah we have AB Rider already boook there because we know that some Riders Us in different stage uh the gear yeah so we have every Rider have the own box and we have already the the crank that prepared with the yeah crank with chain Wings on in case so in case they want to use different gearing or maybe crank lengths or pedals yeah crank length is always the same but there are states they use bigger gear or smaller gear and the cranks already compared with the correct length correct uh um pedal and that's for every Rider different that's say Co what about the um what about cleaning and lubricating the chains you guys waxing any chains oil yeah we watch it okay it it's not happening here if it happens in uh our high for Center in the Netherlands so then what you're doing is bringing all the chains here ready to go put them on the bike run them in and then after a few days of use they will go back to uh Netherlands so for the zerro how many chains do you have well we now 40 here but we get every weekend we get uh new deliveries and 40 again yeah wow that a lot isn't it okay and what else do we have anything exciting is that it I think that's it we got where's the time TR bikes we have only one here yeah only for our like GC guy and the other time bikes will uh will come next week okay so it's stage seven I think yeah so because there's so many bik you just separate them yeah they are still now now still in the Netherlands and uh they prepare like we are doing this ground to with five mechanics like all the time and then with the TT there is coming a sixth and he's just focusing on the TT prep the TT bikes in the Netherlands and then comes here for the GT so you're one of five Mechanics for the whole tour yeah wow that's good yeah okay um I think I've run out of questions this place looks incredible Martin thanks for showing
