veterinarians have read it what is the most remarkable example of intuition have you experienced between a person and their pet i had a cat owner come in telling me he saw his cat lick a break in his fireplace one time that day it struck him as odd and asked me to look at him cat was eating drinking and otherwise normal i noticed her gums were mildly pale and ran blood work cat turned out to have autoimmune hemolytic anemia was severely anemic and was a day away from needing a transfusion the cat continued licking the bricks until the anemia resolved the owner saw the behavior once and recognized something was up i just i know this is a very serious topic and i'd sure as heck bring my cat in if he licked a brick but i cannot stop laughing at the image of a cat just licking a brick veterinarian here a recent case that stands out is a client who came back for multiple recheck exams for very vague signs the older dog wasn't following them around the house like she usually did but remained active and playful at other times she was eating but slower and not with the same energetic nature but she ate all her food she was restless at night just some pacing or circling before she would settle all her exams with multiple doctors in our practice were normal and despite lots of testing screening blood work gi testing x-rays abdominal ultrasound and more everything looked great we tried several trials of medications over the two three months this went on some of which never worked others would work for a week or two before the signs returned we didn't want to just dismiss these vague things the owner was noticing but began to wonder if we were on a wild goose chase finally we decided to pull out all the stops screen again from the beginning one last ditch effort before referring her to a specialist there on the chests rays were dozens of metastatic tumors that hadn't been seen before in all our screening we never came across a single lab value that was off or any indication of where the primary tumor was the dog never coughed or gave us any indication to look at the lungs again but the dog has cancer the whole time i'm still impressed that this owner somehow knew and was persistent enough that we eventually found it okay so i am a vet my clinic also does boarding we once had an epileptic dog have a seizure while boarding we stabilized him which took a minute and before we could call the owner to let them know what happened the guy actually called us from across the country to check on their pet just in case that was pretty crazy also had a very sweet geriatric beagle whose owner had cancer hang and they're eating and stable despite terrible kidney values for a year until the owner got her official remission status like a week later we had to put her down it was like she had to stick around until she knew her mom was healthy and then she was okay to let go it's heartbreaking but sweet at the same time on a side note the thing about dentists having a high suicide rate is an urban legend they are no higher than other medical professions veterinarians though really do have a 3x higher risk for suicidal thoughts and depression it's a huge deal in the profession that we are trying to address basically all of us go into this field to help animals vet school is very hard and we receive the same training as human doctors then we graduate with a ton of student debt and get paid one stroke four of what human doctors make our job is also very high stress think about it our patients can't talk to tell us what hurts and we have very limited funds to work with to try to find the right diagnosis you guess wrong order blood work instead of x-rays client runs out of money and the animal may die no pressure right then you add in all the people yelling at you for just wanting money you don't really care then you add inconvenience euthanasias and abandoned animals and abuse animals and did i mention that you're working 12-hour days and you can barely pay your student loans it really beats you down after a while i cherish every life i have felt i truly saved i had to put down my dear stella this past sunday 13 beautiful years with her i truly admire the work you do i can't imagine going through that on a constant basis thank you so much for being there veterinarian here i think the most remarkable moments of intuition that i've seen are when people bring their pet and for euthanasia obviously this doesn't apply to convenience euthanasia maybe it's not as earth-shattering as the question would imply but the fact is that an owner has seen in their friend and family member that their suffering is too great let's not forget that pets can't talk so for someone to come to this conclusion it means that they have a deep understanding of their pet at their best and at their worst it's a bond that veterinarians strive for with every patient because we have to be their voice but we can never approach what our clients have we just don't have the time i also feel that during these appointments the pets are almost always trying to console their owners saying it's okay you can let me go i think it's hard to see when you're in the moment but as an observer it's very apparent i'd like to point out and i think many vets would agree but some won't that euthanasia is not the worst part of my job euthanasia is pain relief the majority of people who bring their pets in for that service do so because they love their animals that love is what makes my job worthwhile yes some people have to euthanize because they can't afford to fix something but the alternative to this is suffering and i can help keep that animal from suffering do euthanasias make me cry of course they're never easy watching entire families sob and being unable to console them is heartbreaking but at the end of the day i have helped them i'm glad to do so obligatory i actually am a vet i see cases periodically where clients notice a relatively small behavioral change and bring their pet in for example client notices cat didn't come to greet them at the door and wasn't too interested in dinner brings canton acute on chronic kidney failure with massive dehydration and acetamia if your pet cats especially is over eight years old you should be getting blood work performed at least once a year i am a vet i had a patient who could sense when his diabetic owner's blood sugar got too low the dog would act weird nudge him bark whatever and when the owner checked his blood sugar it was crazy low he might have passed out or gone into a coma if he hadn't realized it no idea how the dog could sense this since glucose has no smell maybe a subtle change in the owner's demeanor or the body releases some stress hormones that dogs can smell i've never heard this reported before i also had an owner just yesterday mention that his dog can sense when his partner's seizures are going to act up this is something i've heard before and i know there are seizure dogs a type of service dog used to alert people when a seizure is coming even my own personal dogs and cats are very attuned to my emotions and seem to know when i'm sad about something acting super cuddly and looking at my face more they actually have trained dogs who do exactly this they are called hypo alert dogs still don't know exactly how they do it but theories follow the idea that we exude a different scent depending on chemical balances lower glucose means higher concentrations of other chemicals when we breathe or sweat which the dogs can smell cat owner not vet here but i knew my sweet wesley was in trouble but i wasn't sure how he was acting fine but i felt like something was off i became convinced he was constipated and during his annual exam mentioned it to my vet the vet brushed me off and told me he was fine q a few weeks later wesley is breathing weird so i decide to get a second opinion i had forgotten about my suspicion about his constipation because my other now aches that was so certain he was not the vet thinks he may have asthma so she takes him and for an x-ray comes back with a perplexed look on her face shows me the results he is literally full of crap like stuffed full by poor constipated cat long story short he gets an enema and is fine well for now still unsure if he is pooping because i have multiple cats so can't really tell i plan on bringing him in for a checkup soon tl doctor i spend five hundred dollars getting my cat deceitified i am an actual vet a woman who had multiple spinners breed of dog came in and told me her dog had to have gastric dilatation volvulus gdv bloat it's a disease where their stomach flips on itself and requires surgery it's what molly from marley and me died from anyways usually symptoms are non-productive wretching lethargy enlarged stomach this woman said her dog didn't eat dinner and must have gdv he was running and playing just like any other pup not even acting remotely sick took an x-ray gdv now i know the difference between the crazy owners and the ones who really know their pets i'm not a vet but i had an experience with my dog snoopy when i was in high school back then i used to self-harm in order to deal with my emotions one night i came back drunk and really depressed i sat on my bed crying and made a fresh cut on my arm to try and feel better that's when the thought came to me of why bother why even keep living i put the razor blade up to my wrists and tried to work up the courage to end my life that's when snoopy jumped up on my bed and put his head on my lap it was at that moment when i realized how much he would miss me how much my parents would miss me but i just couldn't do that to them after everything they had done for me i put the razor away and fell asleep holding snoopy the next day i decided to tell my parents about how i felt and the things i was doing and that i wanted to get help snoopy passed away two years ago this monday and i miss him a lot but i am also forever grateful to him because at night he saved me from making a terrible decision a similar thing happened to me but when i was relapsing on my eating disorder and was trying to make myself vomit my german shepherd came in the bathroom and was like bro what are you doing no good red alert no good bad stuff happening and pushed me away from the toilet with kisses obligatory not a vet post sorry i had a cat who was very pregnant she was a stray that i took in on a brutally cold canadian winter night and we bonded very quickly i made lots of birthing stations for her and researched a lot about what to expect etc i was out and doing errands one night and got the feeling that she was in labor and needed me i went home right away sure enough she started labor she had the kittens in my lap not a vet but i had gotten a cat from someone who kept trying to abandon her on the street the cat was starved i kept feeding her but she would never gain weight except her belly looked really bloated i started speculating that she was pregnant but her belly blew up in just a couple of days so i doubted that it was a pregnancy i figured it was probably some type of worms or some other terrible thing i said i would take her to the vet the following monday that sunday she laid down beside me and started popping out kittens literally laid on my bed two inches from me most cats prefer little nooks hidden away i had to help her give birth she wanted nothing to do with the kittens she won't even lick burst the sack she wasn't producing milk so i tried really hard to feed the kittens myself and basically take over for her despite my efforts they all died we really bonded over that encounter i think she still was pretty independent though she preferred her alone time one day all of a sudden she would not leave me alone she slept on my belly would not leave my belly i took a pregnancy test a couple days later i was pregnant baby cats need the first feeding from their momma to establish their gut bacteria and such or they almost never make it not your fault not a veterinarian but i have a veterinarian who often remarks that he's blown away by my cat's bond with me when she had some medical issues they ended up sending a tech home because my cat clawed the crap out of her arms i was astonished because my cat is so sweet and meek that my friends joke about it so ask to see her and calm her down as soon as i walked and she was completely normal and calm we had a series of procedures over two months and every time they took her to the lab without me she was a terror every time i went back with her she was docile and chilled while they did injections draws etc my vet says he doesn't understand why but office policy is now for me go with her at all times i'm not a vet and i don't know if this story really applies to the question but it's a great pet story my grandmother had this siamese cat that just loved her the cat's name was buckwheat but she called him bubs bubs was very devoted and loving to her he would take his poor and bring her face in for a cat kiss he loved baths and she would have to hold his head above the water because he would just go limp with relaxation in the warm water anyway when bubs got older he got sick my grandparents had to take a trip during this time and his condition was getting worse and worse every day he hung on sick as death for two weeks while they were away and the day she came home she picked him up he let out a soft little meow and he died in her arms r.i.p bubs not a vet but i had a cat who i adopted as a kitten and bonded with at a crazy level one sunday morning i was waking up and he was in bed with me snuggling not unusual but something a voice said stay with him so we stayed in bed until late i finally got up to feed him and that voice again don't leave this time i didn't listen because i felt guilty for lounging in bed so long and walked away heard a weird grubbled meow and a thud so went back to him and he had died of a heart attack and healed over eating his breakfast i knew he had a heart condition and time was limited but still devastated me he had just turned four still can't figure out those voices all i can say is if you hear them don't ignore them username checks out seriously though sorry about your cat there was no way you could have known it would happen like that dog owner here my child dog got really sick one week we took her to the vet and basically he just thought she had pneumonia but early sunday morning she came into my room panting really hard and just had a weird look on her face i got out of bed and laid with her on the floor told her it was okay she was old 13. very old for a boxer to go she lay down and went as i petted her and called for my parents who didn't believe me till i was bawling so much they couldn't hear me they finally came in as she took her last breath it was the most emotional thing i've ever experienced obligatory not a vet my old neighbors had a cat and she was abused by their two young rowdy grandchild but she was always attached to the grandfather jack when she was about a year old the neighbors moved a few states away and left her there and we took her in we didn't really keep in touch with those neighbors too well maybe a phone call once a year or every other year a good eight ish years later the cat suddenly became depressed she refused to eat and moped around and the veterinarian didn't see anything else really wrong with her a couple days after the vet visit and we get a call from the old woman telling us that jack had passed away see the cat got better but it made me feel bad that poor cat never really loved anyone so much as jack that's really sad because they obviously didn't love her very much i'm not a vet but i had a very strong bond with my cat he began to lose a small amount of weight and even though the vet said it was hypothyroid and not to worry i just knew he was dying there was no real reason to think that but i knew it turned out he had an enlarged heart and he passed away not long after i miss him every day but i'm glad i was able to prepare myself for his passing not a vet but i was home once with my two cats doing a drawing assignment when this weird feeling came over me i sat up and looked around and all of a sudden my cat started to freak out one cat ran under the fridge and the other ran and squeezed under the couch both of them had their hair standing straight up and had awoken from dead sleep the second they both got into position the earth started shaking earthquake and i mildly panicked until it was over now i pay attention to their behaviors jewish in case they might be able to hint at a potential quaker game this is why i freak out a little when i hear one of our cats freaking out in the middle of the night obligatory not a vet but i knew my cat surgery incision had gotten infected before it was visibly so simply because she hid under my bed and didn't want attention when i took her back in to get it checked out the replacement vet my normal one was on vacation almost laughed me out of the office before the tech decided to take my cat's temperature just to be safe sure enough i was right i hope you told your normal vet about the replacement vets actions when she got back i'm in a vet i see a lot of cases where the animal is a little off or adr as we say ain't doing right occasionally it's something very bad like the dog who is quiet and a little lethargic whose spleen has ruptured and dies quickly i often tell my clients to trust their gut since they know their animal i had one recently where the dog seemed off they let him sleep it off overnight and showed up with him at the year at six am for being much worse by morning the dog walked into arrow without issue i went into the exam room and he was on the floor and agonal he died from a gastric dilatation and volvulice i work at a riding stable and we have to watch for the same thing with the horses something as simple as a horse not coming to eat right away could mean colic which can end very badly if not caught and dealt with quickly sadly i think that the staff know some of these horses better than their owners do my dog recently passed my parents and i got him when i was 11 and we kind of grew up together he had been having terrible heart and nerve problems for months and really could go at any moment but he lasted until the day i came home for christmas break from college my puppy wanted to hang out with me for one more day before he died miss you bud similar thing myself sorry to hear it buddy i'm in college in texas my family all lives in arizona my mom called and told me they found leukemia in my golden retriever i had since i was six i'm 20 i got on the first plane i could left in the middle of school week and got to spend a few fun days with her before they came to put her down it was so painful r.i.p cody obligatory not a vet but after reading these dad stories i feel the need to tell a better one tl dr my dog is fine we hosted christmas this year with both our families coming to stay and celebrate this year for the first time we wake up christmas eve morning and my dog is not interested in breakfast this is decidedly not normal normally he is awake before us bouncing between my side of the bed and my sos waiting for us to wake up so i start to get a little worried he just will not eat breakfast he's acting normal still cheerful and lovely just not hungry the sow says well don't worry about it until we have something to worry about and i'm thinking him not eating is something to worry about bro then i go to make breakfast i had made a big loaf of brioche bread for everyone to eat for breakfast and it's missing over a pound of thick delicious butter brioche just gone took us about three seconds to realize that arty wasn't hungry because he was packed to the gills with bread that little mother sucker we had to kennel him for 10 minutes once we found the crumbs in a corner of the backyard but we were laughing the whole time so that's the story of how symptoms said my dog was in danger but he really just got his christmas present early not a vet but in middle school my three-year-old puggle rex started getting really sick and died within a week he passed before they even got the test results back but he wouldn't have made it regardless because encephalitis isn't curable in dogs anyways the night he died i was asleep and didn't know my parents had taken him to the vet i had a dream that my mom and i went to visit him at the vet and he came out of a room let me pet him then walked with a vet tech into a room with bright white light spilling out of it i jerked awake and saw that it was 2 37 am the next morning i found out he died at that exact time never had anything like it happen again but i like to think that was him saying goodbye definitely not a vet but once we had a cat who had decided 4am was the proper time to wake up my parents to be lit outside my mom is a teacher and had had enough of it so one night at 11 pm before she went to bed she said kitty i have a long day at work tomorrow please wait until 6am to wake me up and i will let you out right away dang if that cat didn't jump on her and start meowing at 6am exactly not a vet but all the love to my vet my dog was crapping blood it started with the runs and then came to the dog pooping liquid and then squirting out blood then puking then puking out red i scooped up samples wrote times down brought him in the vet and they gave him under the skin fluids okay then my food obsessive dog stops eating he's laying on the ground just shaking i call my vet hotline and this guy the vet for the place calls me back clearly in his bed at 2am he talks me through how to take the dog's temp and it's not a great temp he tells me where to go and i waffled for a second to wake up my so because of work this vet offered to drive to my house and take my dog to the door gear while i told my sir that i'm going with or without i thought it was goddamn amazing that my vette was willing to give me that my dog was sick even if he was tail wagging and be not only willing to wake up at night to tell me how to take a doggie temp told me where to go and if i couldn't get there was willing to get up and drive my dog there that's amazing vet stuff that really is amazing vet tech here i always assure clients that they know their pets best and to follow their gut feelings we recently diagnosed a grade two three heart murmur in my dog she was laying on top of me and i thought her heartbeat felt funny had a doctor listen to her heart ask them to humor me as i tend to worry more than necessary the sure enough heart murmur but one solo that you can't feel the changes one of my dr's who specializes in imaging of the heart and diagnosis multiple types of heart disease every week couldn't even feel it and thought i was crazy for thinking i could i just knew we also see many pets act differently towards people and other pets who may have something going on had a standard poodle licking a newfoundland belly turned out she is in liver failure he just knew not a vet but had a weird experience with my mom's cat hate this cat hates cats in general he's an outdoor barn kitty who doesn't understand personal space one day i was outside and i heard these somewhat urgent cries but nothing unusual cause fat basil is fat brazil for a reason i decided to go look to see what he was up to found him in my dad's boat hanging upside down with a huge base bait hanging out of his stomach i had to wrangle him so he'd stop moving and making it worse i had to hold him in the same position for 20 minutes waiting for my mom to come outside to get me something to cut the fishing line and the boat cover raced off to the vet luckily surgery day so all the fun toys to knock him out with and tools to dig the hooks out were already out and ready to go 98 later basil is still fat and happy he's lucky he didn't ruin any organs or anything and for some reason he thinks i like him so cute just love him already there was a reddit thread the other day that mentioned that veterinarians have something like three times thoughts of considering suicide compared to the general population one of the comments i remember said that vets go into it to help animals and then a substantial portion of their work involved killing them i can't imagine how awful that must be my very first job was volunteer work at the spca animal shelter i was 13 the minimum age my friend and i were like yay kitties and doggies and then i found out that there weren't popsicles in the deep freezer once had a young couple visit my office complaining that their adopted golden retriever was continuously barking at a wall in their bedroom for no apparent reason gave them some advice and toughed them about a few exercises they could try couple months later i heard the couple was arrested for possession of sea and drug trafficking the sea was found in a closet hidden behind a wall in the couple's bedroom just so happened the golden was a retired police drug dog if you are new to the channel you can subscribe i publish new videos every day until then check
