bringing you the news and information you need from the people making a difference this is Comcast newsmakers it has enough power to destroy several warships but it needs more than 100 men to operate properly however the space on the ship isn't exactly made to accommodate that many sailors we take a look at how the men on the USS Toledo go about their everyday lives on this small vessel some common misconceptions about a submarine life are that you that we would be subject to claustrophobia you can tell that there are that the quarters are a little close however you know the the workspaces are just as open as they are in many other engagements from the kitchen to the sleeping areas to even the laundry room space is limited we only have one washer and one dryer for the whole crew it's used a lot we have a schedule actually that's posted right here actually that we use to dictate when personnel can use it when you do laundry though you have to make sure that you're in there 24 all the time during the whole cycle you want to make sure the biggest thing is the dryer gets really hot so you want to make sure that somebody's here in case that you need to shut this or turn off the dryer that you can turn off the dryer really quick [Music] in the kitchen it's one cook preparing meals for about 100 sailors at a time and they do so all day long after breakfast the cook starts to uh prepare lunch at about eight o'clock in the morning they serve lunch at 11:00 we serve four meals a day every six hours underway we're serving a meal and these guys get pretty hungry they line up in the hallway to wait their turn just to get some grub we usually just wait in line has watched NICs get seat first they get first dibs on the food the delicious food we get to eat and play games instead we get to eat today is a good day for lunch some days they're a little slow but today is one of their finer dining moments the one place with space is the captain's stateroom however it's not exactly a home away from home it's like a big luxurious RV I guess I get the most luxurious accommodations on board the ship but you can see they're still pretty pretty sparse every inch of this room is versatile just check out the bed you can see my bed here now in the folded down mode but you know this is also where I do crew interviews for qualification exams or something but the bed folds up into the wall the seats pop up from from below and then the table folds out and this is where I do most of my work then and for the enlisted in the boat they have to share the sleeping racks and with so many men aboard they even have to add beds to the torpedo room we have people actually sleeping right now so that's why it's a little dark in here in his ceiling lights and when it's time to wash up the guys have to share the showers as well it's known as the head the laurel overhead is another bathroom they call it as you can see you're looking at the star right now showers are pretty small but uh generally one when you take in a shower you don't want to get water everywhere so there's a little latch right here to shut the door closed they'd want to close a real quick for you squeegee is actually for 100 friends taking showers you need to wipe down the head I sleep so it maintained the bright work in here you don't want any standing water in here so the cause obviously and so forth you want to avoid you that as you can see with these types of close living quarters there has to be some type of trust among the crew what I see on those surface ships is that you build those bonds on kind of a divisional or a departmental level on on most of the surface ships and the submarine the submarine experience is that we're small enough of a command that you build those bonds all the way across the command after months of not seeing sunlight what these sailors love the most the chance to stand watch on the bridge when we're submerged for long periods like even like for instance for money I finished mercy a few days I think it is a good release to actually get a feeling of sunlight especially even in a short day in short runs when you're like sitting for a week or two worrying in a couple days it's brought up topside you know feeling the Sun this is a pretty good experience just to feel that and also the fresh air too [Music] in this hours news makers we learned how sailors aboard the USS Toledo take on major responsibilities while learning to adjust to a not so comfortable environment I'm Spiro Canton thank you for joining us the preceding has been a presentation of Comcast newsmakers and now back to CNN Headline News
