what is going on guys Jesse here so I just recently switched from my 49 inch ultrawide to this 48 inch large format Monitor and if you guys have seen any of my other videos on the subject you'll know that I love that 49 inch with that 32x9 aspect ratio because it basically gave you all of the benefits of having two monitors side by side but took away that bezel in the middle and gave you the flexibility to use it as a single monitor for a more immersive experience especially for games that supported it but even though overall I loved it and it had a bunch of benefits it also had a couple of downsides as well mainly being that most content wasn't really made for that unique aspect ratio and you ended up having to deal with black bars most of the time so over the past couple of years I've been kind of content with the drawbacks of the super ultra wide form factor because of all the benefits that it gave me and I just kept using it but secretly just kind of keeping my eye out on the horizon seeing if there were any other better options available and recently these large format monitors have been getting more and more popular with manufacturers coming out with better and better options like 48-inch TVs have existed for a long time but there's just a lot of quirks with using a TV as your monitor but now we're starting to see manufacturers come out with 48 inch displays that are truly monitors with monitor features and ever since this option kind of popped up I've been keeping my eye on it and just waiting for the right deal to pop up so that I could finally pull the trigger and jump on the wagon and this past Black Friday I finally got my chance when I saw this guy pop up for about 700 off and that was enough for me to finally take the plunge and make it happen and the model I've got here is the LG Ultra gear 48 inch 120 hertz OLED gaming monitor but today's video isn't going to be so much a review of this model specifically but more just about what it's like using a large format monitor in general and what is essentially a TV V on your desk so if you're thinking about using a large format monitor for your setup at home hopefully after watching this video you're going to have a better idea of what some of the advantages and disadvantages of that are and whether or not it's the right fit for you so the first thing you're going to need to be prepared for is and I know this is going to sound stupidly obvious but this thing is enormous like 48 inches nowadays is actually on the smaller end for a TV and if we had a 48 inch TV in our living room it would not look too big or out of place at all so I think a lot of us will underestimate just how big this thing is when you put it on a normal size desk like I would already consider my desk pretty large at 72 by 30 inches not including the chase but even this starts to feel a little bit cramped once you put a 48 inch monitor on it so definitely make sure to look up the dimensions of the monitor that you want to get and make sure that you have enough space for it and don't forget to include the size of the stand as well I actually put this on my monitor arm with a Vasa adapter which kind of leads me to my next pretty obvious warning which is that this is also pretty heavy the monitor arm that I'm using is the ergotron HX which is a pretty heavy duty monitor arm but there is absolutely no chance that it could support the whole way of this monitor I just kind of have it resting on my desk shelf which probably isn't the best for the monitor but I think it's okay because the monitor arm definitely is sharing some of the load here and I also do prefer having a monitor arm because it gives it a much cleaner look but that's enough about the setup what does it actually like to use and well I think it's pretty interesting because there's definitely a lot of benefits that comes with having so much screen real estate but there's also some stuff that needs some getting used to and adjusting to and I think the biggest thing that I'm kind of on the fence about with this new form factor is going to be the amount of eye string that this thing induces like sitting this close to a 48 inch display does make it cover a very large percentage of your field of view and kind of as as a consequence of that you're going to need to actually turn your head to view the edges of the display which that part I actually wasn't too bothered about but having this much screen does cause a lot of eye fatigue and I don't really know the science behind why it happens but I definitely feel myself needing to take breaks much more often than usual but one thing that has helped me out a lot with this though is getting an under desk keyboard tray and apart from just cleaning up the surface of my desk a little bit it allows me to get about a foot and a half further than I otherwise would be able to and I know it doesn't sound like a lot but that additional foot and a half has made my experience using this monitor like a thousand times better I don't have to turn my head as much and the eye strain has been greatly reduced but I know what you guys are really wondering is once you get everything set up am I seeing any benefits from this new form factor and the answer to that is without a doubt yes like you basically get all the benefits of the super ultra wide but pretty much times two one of the major benefits of 32x9 is that it's the equivalent of having two monitors side by side but with no bezel in between but with this you basically get four monitors side by side but still with no bezel now to get this to work you will need some sort of third-party software but they're pretty easy to find I'm mostly on Mac nowadays and I found that the app magnet fills my needs pretty well all I have to do is drag my window into the corner or the edge of the screen and it'll resize the window automatically to the correct size and if you feel like using this whole monitor is too much sometimes which it definitely can be you can also just switch it into Ultra wide mode where it'll turn off the pixels on the top and bottom to effectively give you a 32 by 9 or 21 by nine aspect ratio now obviously if you do this you're going to lose some screen real estate on the top and bottom but I'm glad to see that option is there for those who want it and the other great thing is that since this is OLED those pixels that are off on the top and bottom are actually completely off and you're not going to get those glowing black bars that LCDs are plagued with and I know I said I wasn't going to have this ba review of this monitor specifically but I think most large format monitors at least the popular ones out right now are all lead so you're gonna see the same benefits there as well but I think the thing that this does a lot better than the ultra wide is just using this as a single monitor for a single piece of immersive content and whether you're watching a show slash movie or playing a game you just get such a great experience that I don't think is really matched on any other form factor right now now granted I think if you can find a game that supports 32x9 very well it is a more immersive experience because you can sit a little closer and the screen feels like it's almost wrapping around you which is a really cool experience as well but the key there is if the game supports it and a lot of games either don't support it at all or support it pretty poorly but with 16x9 you can have the peace of mind that this will without a doubt work well with every game out there because it's been the default aspect ratio for a very long time so overall I've been really enjoying using this as my new monitor I get to keep pretty much all the benefits that I had with the 32x9 ultrawide like treating this as multiple monitors with the flexibility to also treat it as one big monitor for maximum immersion the only real downside that I'm noticing so far is that the hybrid Max PC setup isn't working as seamlessly as it used to and if you don't know what I'm talking about I'll leave a link below but I think it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make for all the new benefits and I think one takeaway I want you to have from this is that the keyboard tray has helped out a ton like I think without it I would not really be able to use this as my monitor because of the eye strain that extra foot and a half that it gives you seriously makes such a big difference and I highly highly suggest if you're looking at a large format monitor like this also getting a keyboard tray because it's seriously made it like a thousand times better my time with this monitor has been pretty short though so I'm planning on doing an update video maybe six months to a year from now so if you have any questions about the monitor or what it's like using a large format monitor then just leave it in the comment section down below I don't always reply to the comments but I promise I read every single one of them so definitely put your questions down in there and if I see one that I think other people are also going to be wondering about I'll probably try to address it in my next video but that's it for this one thank you so much for watching like if you liked it sub if you loved it and I'll catch you guys in the next one peace
