ugly ugly ugly is what many people seem to think when you bring up the subject of the first generation Porsche Panamera and maybe that's why these things have plummeted in value making them incredibly affordable on the used car market but the thing is apparently the first generation Porsche Panamera costs a fortune to maintain or do they there are so many questions surrounding this thing let's get into answering them and finding out if you should seriously consider buying one [Music] now before we go on guys a massive thank you to wipertech for supporting not only this video but re-driven in general more on those guys later now let's set this in here in this video we're talking about the 970 series Panamera that's what Porsche call it and it was produced from 2009 to 2016. however in 2013 Porsche updated the entire Panamera range changing the mechanical packages enhancing design aspects and increasing the levels of tech and features and just like all good Porsche models it has been available in an array of different iterations and specs generally all relating to what's powering it and what e-model it is and this may seem confusing until it's all explained basically you have the base spec Panamera that is called simply the Panamera and it has a six cylinder petrol engine powering the rear wheels then there's the Panamera S which before the 2013 update comes with a 4.8 liter V8 powering again the rear wheels and interestingly these are the only Panamera available with a manual transmission however after the 2013 Update the manual was discontinued and the V8 was replaced by a twin turbo V6 then there's the Panamera 4 which is basically the same as the basic Panamera it's four-wheel drive and the Panamera 4S which is the same as the panameras only it too has four wheel drive then you have the Panamera GTS which is basically a fully optioned Panamera 4S with more power then there's the turbo which adds two turbos to the V8 adding even more power and is four wheel drive then there's the Panamera Turbo S which is kind of the same as the Panamera turbo but has more power again and more stuff then there's the Panamera diesel which has a turbo diesel V6 but it only Powers the rear wheels and finally the Panamera S hybrid and SE hybrid which have both rear wheel drive and powered bio supercharged V6 but add an electric motor see simple although being a premium European brand these are then all customizable links to different optional enhancement packs plus some Porsche owners like the original owner of this car went even more hardcore into the customization redriven cheat sheets it'll answer all of your questions okay let's talk about the first controversial part about the first gen Panamera the looks it's a big car like cars are getting bigger but this thing is large that does mean it has some serious presence on-road especially when it's in this wonderful like charcoal gray color wearing aftermarket wheels and has been lowered substantially however in standard form like especially with like lighter colors and the smaller wheels and the standard ride height not as convincing see the problem is it's kind of like the automotive version of The Uncanny Valley if you don't know what that is it's when like a human looking robot or human looking computer generated imagery is super super accurate but just not quite accurate enough this is a bit the same especially from the back and the side like it's not wagon enough to be a wagon it's not Coupe enough to be like a proper Coupe it's not definitely not sedan enough to be a sedan and it kind of looks like SUV Dimensions but sort of squashed so it doesn't it doesn't really look like anything good it just makes you feel a bit uneasy and odd inside makes me feel a little bit queasy in the stomach from the back however this car did Inspire the Porsche takehan sport Turismo and that is one of the sexiest cars money can buy so thank you weird looking Panamera okay now inside visually things are far more palatable in here and also like this thing's 12 years old and you'd never know it's still basically this was one of the first Porsches of this generation to run this kind of design language and Porsche is still kind of running with this at the moment so it feels up to date now design wise this is going to sound a little bit wanky but I love the fact that basically from the center console out it's all quite minimalistic and just quite elegant but then in the middle you've got kind of a lot of design stuff going on here but it kind of reminds me of like a really beautiful like neck collarbone and kind of shoulder line just highlighted by like a really nice necklace in the middle that's what I feel this does sorry about that now the materials used guys it's a Porsche Everything feels fantastic the doors arm rests everything the leather on the seats everything you touch and feel just feels premium and absolutely bloody lovely like even the way the buttons feel like they just there's a really nice tactility tactility to everything get delightful now ergonomics wise again typical Porsche the driving position is absolutely spot on and there's loads of adjustability as well also it is a big car but you sink down into it and like this is quite High the shoulder line here is quite high so yeah you just feel like encompassed in Porsche it's lovely now wear and tear in this particular car the original owner used it as his everyday driver the guy that owns it now the second owner again uses it as his everyday driver it's got what nearly 160 000 K's on it wear and tear fantastic like door cards great even here like there's a little bit of wear and tear just on the edge there but not much the leather on the seats still feels super Supple and the seats are still super comfy there's no squeaky no weird noises coming from the seats this isn't the original steering wheel this is uh the generation after steering wheel and like the texture on the leather is fantastic shifter here excellent wear and tear for how much use this thing gets spot on and if you're a fan bit of collecting stuff you're going to love your collection of buttons increasing because there are so many buttons in this interior I am a fan of buttons over basically all the functionality going through the touch screen this screen still does a whole bunch of other stuff but here we go we're going to do a button camera and here we go one two three four five six seven eight nine 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 29 buttons just in the center console and you've got room for three potentially five more now in terms of practicality up front starting with your glove box it's an okay size Uno cup holder here and you're looking around going well hang on a sec only one cup holder this is supposed to be like a big practical almost kind of family car ah hidden cup holders in here and I love the way these work look at that that is so cool oh also when they're out you don't have to deal with this horrific looking plastic opening because you can close that section up there which is really really heavy smart design from Porsche no surprises there uh what else we've got got a little bin here we've got a USB auxiliary input and power outlet there you've got door pockets and I know what you're thinking you're thinking here I'm gonna stick those door Pockets they're not wide enough for anything well look at this they open up also there's an ashtray in a cigarette lighter it's disgusting oh also a bit of netting down there in case you take your passenger fishing and you need somewhere to put your fish there's a fish net perfect for it that's it I think for practicality nothing else hiding anywhere up here there you go now in the back seat I'm exactly eight centimeters shorter than another tough and muscular looking thing that once looked all kinds of wrong Dwayne The Rock Johnson this is in my driving position wow like it is so comfortable back here loads of any room good amount of foot room heaps of Headroom for like a coupe kind of looking thing there is so much space back here and you know why the guy that was in charge of Porsche at the time when these were being developed was extremely tall and he said that for him to basically give this car a tick of approval he had to fit comfortably back here he's taller than me and like yeah you could be like six foot five and fit back here easily now wear and tear in the back seat of this particular car basically none in fact it almost sort of smells like a new car back here all the leather still super Supple there's no scratches on the seats anywhere all of the materials used again like up the front it just feels it's just bloody lovely back here uh one slight negative I've noticed on the wear and tear this isn't Porsha's fault actually no it is Porsche's fault for being dumb enough to use gloss black plastic in high traffic areas some of the black plastic has kind of scratched up like all cars why use that use some other I know some other textual coding always scratches looks good new not so much after about 14 seconds now practicality and stuff in the back seat are you ready here we go there's loads you've got your own light up here you've got your own air vent here you've got your own air vents here these rear seats are heated you've got a cup holder here you've also got under this slidey bit another cup holder which is perfectly sized for a small pretentious coffee like a ristretto or an espresso the coffees I love but if you're not that kind of person that opens up to being a larger one you've got a little storage area here which is also felt lined to keep it nice and Polished there's your pull down armrest here which also has another cubby hole in here which is also again felt lined you've got map Pockets behind both of the seats but there are some negatives ashtrays gross and cigarette lighter even more gross so much grossness a little um little feature that I've just noticed you know the positive when you open the door you've got your armrest that goes here but they've extended the armrest into this little nugget it does this in the front as well you've got like a little tiny mini nuggety armrest just so design wise it all kind of flows it's that attention to detail that's what you're paying for now practicality in the boot this is one of the big advantages of this car over say like an M5 or an E63 or even like a Lexus GSF it's a lift back and the aperture is huge so not only is there loads of space for your stuff it's easy to get things in in and out of plus there's even more storage under here and under here and obviously these seats fold flat as well now kicking off with the tech that you're probably going to use the most phone connectivity yes these do have Bluetooth connectivity but things like Apple carplay and Android auto this car was too old for that but the good news is fitting Apple carplay and Android auto with aftermarket gear is really easy and also Porsche recently have released like a whole bunch of Apple carplay and Android auto kind of infotainment systems for a lot of their classic and retro models it's not technically available for the Panamera just yet but it might only be a matter of time but aside from any phone connectivity even though this thing is getting a bit old obviously a whole generation old the amount of stuff you get is still really really good like even in early base models we're talking a superb sounding 14 speaker Bose sound system dual zone climate control Power adjustable front seats with memory settings and all of this and so much more but spec up to like a late model and a higher spec and my God you get some stuff we're talking adaptive air suspension Porsches sport Chrono package 20 inch wheels heated front seats directional buy Xenon headlights a two-tone leather and Alcantara interior and all of the acronyms you'll ever need like pdcc PTV and pccb and this doesn't even touch on the optional extras like the incredible sounding burmester Hi-Fi or the sports exhaust and the lowered suspension honestly the list goes on and on and for all of the full details redriven.com check out that cheat sheet now as far as the safety goes look these things were primarily designed to Ferry heads of Industry across Germany at insane speeds on autobarns so it is loaded with safety gear hence the five-star safety rating but to take you through exactly what safety gear that you can expect it feels only right that we do this next voiceover in kind of a craft work Autobahn kind of style [Music] action and electronic stability control pre-break technology plus the monitorizes fashioning a pedestrian's impact shot the West occur again for all the specific details Ray driven.com check out the shade shades as well okay it's a Porsche so it needs to be impressive but it is getting on a little bit and it is a big lug of a car so has Asian distance diluted The Experience well let's answer some very important questions does it feel special yes it does not only is this an instant feeling of being cocooned in a special environment because it's just bloody beautiful in here the Porsche have this ability that like at really any speed it feels engaging and involving like all the weights of all the control surfaces like the steering and the pedals just feel right and you're cocooned in this amazing driving position like through this like we're not going fast but through this corner it just feels so right and then because this one is I know it just looks so menacing and it's an angry V8 I kind of feel like I could be part of like a German organized crime ring it's arguably the ugliest Porsche ever is it embarrassing yeah you know what like I think in standard trim with standard Wheels it yeah it's just it could be a little bit but this one because let's say it's enhanced the way it is no not embarrassing at all also in this case for all of these first gen panameras they look pretty similar to the current Panamera so when it comes to exerting like an image of wealth and Prestige these things still do it really well we'll get into what these cost to buy in a little bit but I tell you what as far as a car that looks way more expensive than it actually is this is this is up there but it's big heavy and low Apostles and Corners are nightmare now look I don't know who tuned this suspension this is on aftermarket coilovers but even in the standard Panamera I feel like whoever tuned this suspension and the standard car suspension maybe they're Wizards or they employ some kind of black magic because not only does it handle like through corners it feels so much smaller and more Nimble than it actually is but it absorbs bumps so well so you you're definitely getting the Best of Both Worlds this one I thought would ride horribly but it doesn't even on rough roads it still feels luxurious and feels like a proper luxury car the other thing with the suspension tune I I assume that this would just sound rattly and horrible because there are some reports of you know rattling interiors and these especially on firm suspension but in this car like there's a couple of little noises over my left shoulder but they're not bad but the front end here it it sounds and feels again as taught as drama I say that all the time but it does it feels just super tight its natural home is the Autobahn what's it like in the real world well kind of expands on the previous answer like this actually like when you're driving it it feels like a really well sorted hot hatch like it feels small than it is until you have to go through like a drive-through or pull into like a shopping center car park or go down a narrow street because you are suddenly aware that this is a large car the actual footprint is around about the same as a Range Rover and yeah you feel it you feel like oh this is nice and Nimble and faster they're gonna have fun and then oh my God there's walls in the car and you start freaking out it's a Porsche is it fast okay so it doesn't feel fast um let's put it this way it's a little bit like when you know people are talking about you behind your back but you're not totally aware of what they're exactly saying behind your back what I mean in terms of the car is that like you put your foot down and there's all this wonderful V8 noise and you're aware you're going fast but you're just not aware of how fast you're actually going until you look down and go oh my God I'm going that fast it's what I mean [Music] yeah okay that's that's that's plenty the problem with flooring it as fast as this thing is is that you can almost physically feel the money draining from your bank account because of the the cost of premium fuel these days that kind of diminishes the fun now guys we have all been there it starts bucketing down with rain you flick your wipers on and the wipers barely do a job at removing the water because you haven't replaced them for like two years rather than spending a fortune on OEM wipers or going to your local auto parts store and trying to decipher between the thousands of different options they offer why don't check out wipertech via the link down there in the description to get your wipers delivered to your door [Music] okay now in terms of cost of ownership look if fuel consumption is an issue for you maybe a Porsche Panamera isn't the car for you in saying that if it is a concern just get the hybrid then you have the cost of parts and labor guys it's a Porsche it's going to be expensive for example this car has just returned from a service and a solid going over and the final bill was fifteen thousand dollars then you've got depreciation and if you bought one of these brand new and you still own it you might want to skip ahead for example a 2015 Turbo S with some conservative options retailed here in Australia before on-road costs for around about 470 000 that same car eight years later it's going to be asking and this is being optimistic around about 150 000 that's well over three hundred thousand dollars lost in just eight years that equates to around about 770 dollars a week just gone vanished and that's before any of the consumables like petrol tires oil servicing any of that sort of stuff ouch but this depreciation means that you can now get a base spec Panamera for a little bit over fifty thousand dollars which is the same price as another German five-door hot hatch the current Golf GTI so a Porsche for the same price as a golf that seems like an absolute bargain or is it because guess what's coming next okay before we get into the uh let's say reality hit aspect of this video a massive thank you to Jason for Lending us his sexy as hell Panamera and also to everybody in the Porsche and Panamera owners groups especially Neil and Murad you guys are legends honestly without the Panamera owners groups assisting us with researching this video we just couldn't make these videos you guys you guys rock okay problems starting with the exterior first up bloody rust especially around the strut Towers the brake light the rear wheel wells and along the chassis rails especially if the car hasn't been jacked up properly then there are reports of faulty door handles Unfortunately they often need replacing actually while we're on doors the door lock actuators they can also fail but they can't be repaired so you've got to buy new ones the active rear spoiler seems to forget that it's supposed to be active and becomes well inactive on models fitted with air suspension this one isn't this is fitted with some very tasty coilovers the air suspension can fail and understandably being Porsche Parts fixing it will become expensive now this is disappointing for a Porsche but there are plenty of reports of paint quality issues reports of it peeling and fading and just going bad then there's reports of headlight issues basically what moisture getting in there and the bulbs burning out way too prematurely now internal problems unfortunately loads of reports of electrical issues plenty of owners out there have reported cases of the infotainment systems like glitching out or completely failing and even like the warning lights on the dashboard they can do their best impression of a Christmas tree actually just on the instrument cluster plenty of owners have reported of inaccurate readings or the whole thing just completely glitching out and failing then there are the issues with the air conditioning because other owners have complained of like malfunctioning events or just inefficient cooling sunroof issues can occur everything from like leaking to just like the whole mechanism playing up the electric window switches are a common failure but the good news is you can get cheap Replacements on eBay then there are plenty of reports of just random rattles and squeaks generally on cars that are fitted with firmer suspension some owners have reported that the leather can wear like prematurely this can be down to like not great materials used or just a lack of care now we should say Obviously these problems don't occur on every Panamera there are plenty of these out there kind of like this one that have had none of these issues whatsoever and the easiest way to avoid these problems is just to maintain your car properly okay any other really heartbreaking part of this video mechanically what goes wrong with the Panamera I'd love to tell you but I can't because I'm not a qualified mechanic but Jim certainly is look over the years I have to be honest I've always been a bit of a fan of these things but the more I've learned and especially recently when researching the 14 or so different engine variants I've got to tell you I think my opinion has changed somewhat and because there are about 14 or so different types of engines I am going to have to generalize just to make life easy so we're not here all night so I'm going to start off at the more reliable end of the spectrum here which is actually the hybrid versions there are a lot less of them around so it is harder to get accurate data but overall they really do seem like the more reliable option and from here on in it's pretty much all downhill the first on the chopping block here is the V6 diesels there's a few different versions and I'm going to group them all together because they do share a lot of the problems they also are the same or very similar to the engines in the Audis and the Volkswagens very similar V6 diesel they have problems with injector seals they have EGR complications EGR cooler leaks they have oil leaks they have DPF issues they all have coolant leagues at some point and to be honest they really are just a bit too problematic for my liking another thing this V6 diesel in the panel Mira was another one of the vehicles caught up in the hole diesel gate thing which is you know some people care about it some people don't I just thought I'd mention it because it was there it was in it the V6 petrols they're possibly slightly more reliable than the Diesels they again do have problems with their turbos they also have oil leak problems they do have a similar very complicated cooling system with a lot of plastics a lot of leaks some timing chain issues to look out for as well and definitely make sure they've definitely had all their services because without that they tend to start using a lot of oil and speaking of oil consumption that brings me to the V8s which they are very well known for they also have a problem with their PCV or their engine Breather System that can cause a lot of problems something to look out for and speaking of oil if it's not burning it it's leaking out of the thing so they're all known for oil leaks as well did I mention turbos yet they're quite problematic as well one of the bigger more Sinister problems on the V8s is the camshaft Drive gears the retaining bolt on them they tend to Shear off or workless and when they do it sometimes just drops the chain and sometimes just stops the car and it's not too bad but quite often what really happens is the engine keeps spinning and has a catastrophic failure and it can just be ridiculously expensive and in some cases a whole new engine is required and if you want to know how much it costs to rebuild one of these Porsche V8s well it's pretty much all of the money in the world and if there's any money left after that you might just be able to afford to fix your pdk because when they the bed they really the bed very rarely is it a cheap fix more often than not it's a catastrophic failure very expensive other than that look they do very often prematurely wear out suspension bushings ball joints and you've got to replace the whole arm it is quite expensive another thing in the suspension is they do frequently have problems with the air ride system and the compressor that runs it so there's print plenty there to go wrong now because it is a Porsche and it's usually owned by someone who's quite passionate you might find that if it's on the road and it's in generally good condition it might have already had a fortune spent on it and it might be okay but you have to remember there is a lot to go wrong and is that worth the risk okay so should you buy one well this is easily answered if you'll allow me to split you guys into two groups group a you guys have heaps of money but you're a little bit mad Group B you have a lot less money but you're very sensible let's start with Group B God no do not buy this car you can't afford to keep the bloody thing on the road and look I know it's wonderful and yes when you ignore what might go wrong and the cost to repair it it might seem like great value and it's Unique and it does everything so incredibly well but you know it's going to send you broke and you know taking risks like this will stress you out once the adrenaline dies down do not buy it but if you're in group a yeah why not bite your crazy Rascal you've worked hard and you've saved your cash well maybe you're just happy to put yourself in scary amounts of debt and we thank you for being so irresponsible when it comes to the love of high maintenance cars like the Panamera cars like this they're not about logic they're about passion and all the wonderful feelings and emotions that are triggered when you own and drive a car like the Panamera and it wasn't for all of you guys in group a special cars like this would vanish from our roads and our lives see financially you're potentially an idiot for buying a Panamera but you're an idiot we love and we thank you because it's people like you that keep the car industry exciting but bit of a plot twist at the end here guys there's another car that's of this kind of money does pretty much everything this thing can do but
