imagine you're on the Open Sea miles away from the nearest land surrounded by nothing but water the ocean is an unpredictable thing and even the most experienced Sailors are not immune to Danger today we delve into the breathtaking world of the US Navy where a Man Overboard is not a rarity but a possibility for which every sailor must be prepared how does the crew react in such a critical moment what are the secrets behind their quick and effective rescue actions in June of 2019 a dramatic Man Overboard incident occurred on the USS Abraham Lincoln a nuclear powerered aircraft carrier of the US Navy as the ship navigated through the Arabian Sea an alarm was raised when a sailor fell overboard the incident happened in the middle of the night which made the rescue operation particularly challenging due to limited visibility thanks to the immediate action and well-coordinated efforts of the crew the Sailor was rescued within an hour the crew executed The Man Overboard procedure with Precision highlighting the critical role of training and preparation as soon as the alarm was sounded the rescue mission was initiated using lights and markers on the water to determine the exact location of the Sailor this incident not only underscores the importance of rapid and efficient responses in emergency situations but also the ongoing need for strict safety protocols aboard ships each crew member plays a crucial role in the safety of others with their training enabling them to respond effectively Under aen Pressure it goes without saying that life aboard a US Navy ship is a unique experience these massive vessels often as long as three football fields are home to thousands of sailors working around the clock to keep the ship running smoothly with multiple decks towering high above the water line and expensive aircraft parked on the flight deck the envir can be incredibly dangerous especially during rough weather as one may expect when a ship is sailing through a storm the deck can become a treacherous Place powerful winds crashing waves and the constant motion of the vessel make it super tricky for Sailors to maintain their footing in these conditions the risk of someone falling overboard increases dramatically just think of standing on the edge of a ship's deck looking down at the turbulent Waters below the drop can be as much as 50 ft or more depending on the the size of the vessel if a sailor were to lose their balance and fall they would hit the water with Incredible Force potentially causing Serious injury or even knocking them unconscious and Once In The Water the Sailor faces a host of new challenges the ocean can be an unforgiving environment with strong currents high waves and frigid temperatures even if the Sailor is a strong swimmer the sheer size of the ship means that it can quickly disappear from Fu leaving them alone in the vast expanse of the see given these risks it's crucial that the US Navy trains every sailor thoroughly to handle such life or death situations Man Overboard drills or mob drills for short interestingly include the use of popcorn bags yeah popcorn bags they're employed in these training sessions along with other traditional items used by the naval officers so where do the popcorn bags come in how could they simulate a Man Overboard experience let me tell you in advance it's way more practical than you think so why popcorn popcorn bags aren't meant for just theaters they serve a practical purpose in rescue drills firstly popcorn bags have a small size and limited buoyancy closely resembling a Man Overboard unlike weighted objects they float more and are easier to spot and since they're visible in water it helps Rescuers quickly locate them and take action secondly the floating time for a popcorn bag is very short creating a sense of urgency for The Rescuers thirdly the concept of Safety First applies here as well instead of using heavy objects or live personnel which could have put their life under threat popcorn bags seemed to be a more safe option lastly popcorn bags are biodegradable posing no threat to sea life or the environment making it not only an effective but environmentally friendly option as well what are your thoughts on this unique Training Method do you think there better alternatives let us know in the comments below anyway before we head on to discuss mob drills it's important to discuss situations that can lead to someone falling from the vessel let's see some of these situations how can a sailor fall overboard life events are unpredictable even with the most meticulous precautions what is destined cannot be avoided however there are certain conditions that greatly increase the risk of a sailor falling overboard the risk of falling overboard for a naval officer officer differs greatly between the Surface ships and submarines on a Surface ship the primary danger zones are the open decks especially during rough Seas sudden movements strong waves or slippery surfaces can cause a loss of balance leading to a fall overboard additionally nighttime operations with reduced visibility or working near railings can increase the risk of such Falls fatigue is another Factor as sleep deprived Sailors might be less attentive to their footing Subs on the other hand offer a more controlled environment however even submerged vessels aren't without risks transferring between vessels at Sea can cause slips or Falls especially in harsh weather the most likely scenario involves working near open hatches a sudden movement or an equipment malfunction could cause a fall overboard if proper safety measures like tethers or harnesses aren't followed let's see a Man Overboard instance from the past an Airman on the the USS Theodore Roosevelt experienced a near-death experience after falling overboard the event stretches back to 2002 when Peter was propelled by a jet blast into a bomb disposal shoot adding to the misery was the fact that it was the only area without a safety net Peter fell into the Persian Gulf from a staggering height of 90 ft and as if this wasn't enough he was sucked towards the 66,000 lb propeller of the ship Peter was fighting for his life but life showed Mercy to Peter who managed to swim free despite the horrible experience and was ultimately rescued by the search teams most surprisingly he didn't receive many injuries Sailors on Deck are particularly susceptible to such incidents Special Care is required when operating on Deck but Destiny tells nothing of its course so mob drills prepare any sailor to be the saviors in these scenarios submarine Man Overboard drill procedures manover Bo drills are conducted as part of routine training they're mostly conducted at the time of entering or exiting the port as the submarine is surfaced at the time depending on the specific vessel and the deployment schedule the frequency of such drills can vary a mob drill is not a task for a single man it's teamwork where every crew member has to put in their best effort negligence from even one single person means the difference between life and death The Man Overboard drill drills look something like this a bridge watch detects The Man Overboard alarms are sounded throughout the vessel to alert everyone of the situation the officer on duty orders a turn and calls for the mo procedure to begin the Lookouts are assigned to spot the Man Overboard pinpointing their exact location as per orders by the officer on duty engine rooms adjust the power and maneuver the submarine to find the person and what about the safety apparatus damage control Central provides necessary safety equipment for a rescue operation and detects a hull breach or any other serious damage the medical personnel are always prepared to provide first aid and medical care for the person overboard at the earliest the submarine takes a turn and returns to the place of the event with the help of navigational tools and visual sighting if possible once these measures are taken a rescue swimmer boat or a crane is deployed along with a dedicated mob crew popcorn bags as mentioned earlier are also used in these drills in this procedure popcorn bags are popped and thrown into the water and the rest of the procedure is the same the drill can also be carried out with weighted objects or dummies for a more realistic experience all in all the whole drill requires extra vigilance eyes and ears must be attuned to commands at all times once the drill is over it's time for a debriefing it's done to assess the performance of each participant and find areas for improvement m is not a simple Rescue Mission it's like a chain reaction where every participant has to play their part this is why submariners undergo rigorous training to hone the reflexes needed in such a high pressure situation it's definitely not ordinary people who are running a force as big as the US Navy while drills culminate in rescuing a dummy real life mob scenarios can be far more complex especially when accompanied by Stormy Weather so what happens when a real person goes overboard how do naval officers navigate the chaos to save a life before we move on we'd like to take a moment to invite you to join our Channel as a member it'll help us not only continue producing these fantastic videos about the Navy but also serve as a tribute to all the veterans who tune in to our videos head on over to the link in the description or simply visit our Channel page and select join thank you and now back to the emergency a real man overboard situation on sub unlike a drill a real mob situation is a desperate fight for survival each member must overcome their fears and prepare to save the person from the call of the officer on duty to the deployment of the rescue the drill is over but the real mob situation starts the chief of the boat would muster all the crew members designated at specific locations for a headcount crew members will now report to their muster station the number of personnel on board is then compared to the crew roster and this is the point that decides the next steps if a discrepancy arises in this head count commands are relayed all across the vessel confirming the mob situation the rescue mission is not limited to the vessel but all nearby vessels and Shore stations are informed of the mishap every Personnel is now invested in finding the missing person time is critical in mob situations especially if the weather is cold the person overboard has limited time to be rescued every passing it pushes him closer to the brink it's a situation of chaos but the US Navy prepares its Personnel for the worst even in moments of frenzy they know how to keep the morale High meanwhile I've got a question for you if you were in a Man Overboard situation what do you think would be the most challenging aspect to overcome let me know in the comments below now back to the topic at hand US Navy drills are intelligently designed to make use of of intelligent equipment Man Overboard drills are not limited to submarines of course surface vessels also undergo rigorous training for such a situation so how do the surface ships practice mob situations and how does that differ from a sub mob drill surface ship Man Overboard drills are not exclusive to the Navy but are standard practice on all cruises and vessel Journeys worldwide with safety as the top priority but when it comes to the US Navy we see drills so efficient and well-coordinated that we stay Amazed by the Precision and the expertise these drills help trainees practice effective communication the chain of communication between the bridge the lookout and the rescue teams is of utmost importance and has to be maintained at all costs quick and efficient communication means early reporting early spotting and early retrieval of the Man Overboard all these measures increase the survival of the person involved in the Mish as time is the enemy Swift action is crucial and the only way to save that life is to act as vigilantly as possible and for Sailors responding to mob situation becomes ingrained it's a vital reflex etched into their minds and actions the US Navy produces some of the most resilient individuals people who are trained to operate under conditions of extreme stress and panic in situations that would most but are they Simply Built differently not entirely rigorous training plays a huge part here Navy search and rescue swimmers also called s are one of the most elite and skilled Departments of the US Navy their training is designed to weed out only the most physically and mentally fit candidates they undergo rigorous training to train every neuron in their body to operate under conditions of peril they are taught swimming abilities that are second to none breath holding abilities are a crucial part of their training among the swimming skills they're taught the most important ones are open water navigation towering techniques and deep water rescues overall they're trained to achieve maximal physical endurance they also receive necessary medical training like providing first aid to the victim and Performing CPR in moments where the person is on the verge of death a are deployed through helicopters so they're also taught efficient deployment techniques signaling from water and effectively communicating with the helicopter crew these helicopters are provided with rescue baskets or slings to pull The Rescuer back on board they're trained in conditions that simulate harsh weather wild winds and monstrous waves performing a rescue operation under such conditions means putting your own life under threat that's why no stone is left on turn in their training sessions to maximize the chances of survival of the victim as well as The Rescuer now you know this job is not for the faint of heart men and women of Steel with the right skill set and a strong will are required to perform the duty Navy Rescuers are quite aware of the Life Death time limit in freezing water and they know under such conditions they have to act even faster only rigorous and intelligent training makes them capable of developing these reflexes they have to have the Keen vision of a hawk and the sharp hearing of a wolf and as expected they must have the ability to react instantly and they must be daring enough to overcome their fears and Dive Into the Wild Waves as we come to an end I have a question for you what do you think about the mob drills carried out in the
