I mean have you guys ever thought that this is your Tuesday this is your office yes welcome aboard the hmcs Nimo this is a Pacific Coastal defense vessel I hope I have sea legs we'll be on board for about four or 5 days and the first thing you do when you board better to make sure you check yourself in it also means for the next week I'm fully in the hands of the Royal Canadian Navy as they put me through every single exercise this vessel offers what do you call it h just a puke bag we'll get to that in a bit but I think the first thing we need to see is where are we sleeping so we're going inside we are sharing a room sort of bunking with one of the officers this is actually the second biggest bedroom on board so not too bad wait until you see the others so this is uh partly his workspace this is his bed this is my bed that will fold down and storage under here and we each got a set of lockers this is my locker very clean very organized multi-functional not a lot of space but honestly more than I expected on this ship but first things first an operational meeting the Wonder you think it's actually G chair I see so this is the exercise mission brief yes yeah so just uh it's kind of a scal Down version of what we gave the crew before we sail he is the captain or known on board here as leftenant Commander Vander but I should probably give him a seat back as the rest of the briefings are for him regarding today's departure specifically everything from current weather patterns to threat levels and anything else they need to know about but we'll leave that to them while we get acquainted with this vessel all right so now we're going to get a walk about little tour of the ship starting of course with food so fridge for uh 46 people for 3 weeks wow take another vegetable store room over here yeah pineapples watermelons got it all close this behind me H sure we got all of our dry stores dry stor dry food canned food and so this is this is the side of the ship right here and interestingly we have that three line that's the actual water that's the water level you got all your spices and condiments of course once the crew have eaten the food they got to go somewhere this is called the head and to keep everyone clean and smelling nice there are showers and enough laundry machines for 4 6 crew members you don't want a stinky crew so that's a good thing but maybe the most important part on board are the bedrooms messes messes a mess is the Navy word for the place that you eat so it's ches and Poo's mask or the officer mask also the place where you sleep used to be combined but now we right so also three bunks three bunk beds couple lockers wow bunch of shoes wow it's not a big boat but I'm going to get lost on this at some point oh so we're in the gym space multi-purpose space not the gym it's a gym it's a bridge it's a weapons Locker wow all the flat jackets and highp speed stuff you want yeah and this is the bridge this is the bridge so we have you know a 55 M ship uh with a bridge that's a lot bigger than the 55 M ship actually needs because we have a lot of training stuff we do that requires a ton of people up here so okay plenty of room for activities that's it that's that's the tour but now we're about to get underway so things are going to change they're going to get busier around here it's now time for our departure we're going to get disconnected from the dock and get underway which is a little more complex than I thought this vessel is shaped kind of like a pickup truck this is a big utility deck at the back fitted with a crane to hoist things on and off as they need it including boats along with all the technical tasks associated with preparing the vessel for departure the Royal Canadian Navy maintains a lot of tradition as well Sunset party mustard Bridge dress AAL enhanced Combat Uniform special Duty Personnel cable party close up stations for departure of the upper deck en combat uniform with assume damage control traffic worship 702 pre departure call from Nao Harbor we'll be getting underway at 1815 uh with an ETA for entrance Island 1 190 underway Force prot [Music] compon but there's one person that has to know everyone's jobs I fix Char I have navigation and that's clearly Lieutenant Commander Vander starboard Thruster red 110 this may seem busy and chaotic but he knows exactly what's going on very good we' have all lines up we're no longer attached to the dock we're angled we're going to reverse out it's difficult because we have a side wind pushing us back into the jetty 1 0 0 2.3 knots Rising sir no traffic inbound sir soady steady but there were still two crew on the dock that untied the lines and they're in another little boat it's going to come alongside and now we have to pull them up in the dark so we're going back down to the back deck cuz I want to see how they pull this boat up underway as night has fallen and the wind and the rain have picked up clearly this job only gets more dangerous nothing it but they train for this and safely get the last crew back on board am I clear it's a wet stormy night all right and that's it underway just put a boat from moving in the water back where it goes I think now it's uh get ready for bedtime we're now out of Nimo Harbor so crew will rotate in shifts overnight to keep us safely heading north but I don't have a shift tonight so let's head to bed oh that went well we are underway and the ship is rocking just a little [Music] bit oh that's easy now I've been told the important part is this there's a seat belt here and we probably won't need it tonight but probably tomorrow I'm told so we'll find out soon enough all right well good night see you in the morning all right let's go get some breakfast looks good morning what do you recommend try the tacos if you want yeah let's try the tacos but we've got to get to work now we're heading to the engineering department as they're going to run some drills right now what we're doing is taking the steering away from the bridge and we're going to see how long it takes them to [Music] notice here we go again [Music] [Music] [Music] yeah chip Chips not responding home sir M chips M chips5 then they'll call you you'll hear it come over the steering gear breakdown steering break down ship's not responding H sir pipe steering your break down steering your breakdown steering gear breakdown steering gear breakdown steering gear break down steering gear breakdown here we go it's now up to these guys to diagnose the problem and fix the steering we're checking the power generation system to see if there are any faults or failures on it any grease on the floor any visual sign of why it's failed yeah looks good no video faults okay I'm just having the senior electrician look into it a bit further okay on his end so then is it just up to you two to wait and count on the engineering department at this time absolutely okay I don't know how to fix that with the steering problem found and in the process of being fixed the engineers are now going to begin remote steering the ship from the engine room down here right second second is psted up right here by seconding both thrusters are mid shift Shi head is 004 005 006 007 until they fix it we're just out here drifting so we're we're a drift okay you can see we were following this trajectory and then we lost steering went left and now we're drifting back right are they steering it downstairs steering it down below yes they're steering it down below which is what's bringing us back on course here the officer of the watch gives the directions to downstairs for how they should steer and he confirms if they're doing that or not both rusters 315 315 both rusters 315 both those five sir chips both M chips red5 both red5 both red5 sir okay so that's being operated now we're going to go check the Z Drive should be called a z Drive I [Music] think here we go so this is the Z Drive propulsion system just down below are you pointing the direction that's right you'll hear it in the pipes kachunk kachunk kachunk that's it's moving oh wow and so when I hear that that's a little bit of an indicator that this little needle right here is moving so we've just passed steering back to the bridge but we're going to stay down here a little bit longer and just confirm with with them these are driving the way they're meaning to drive it once it's all confirmed we're back online and everything's accurate we can go back up temper offs the watch uh the ET has discovered the problem it was a broken switch they have rectified the problem and are ready to revert to primary steering recommend we revert to primary steering safe to do so yes please I'll station this is off watch revert to primary steering off swatch I have controled hpster and now we're back to normal operations great success when we do these drills for us the offic of the watch also gets training sometimes they can take longer sometimes they go shorter but you know training is training but in this case it was training for the engineering department as well as upstairs y yeah uh ship is back to original configuration all right okay that completes their drills so we're we're back on everything's good oh moving on to the next drill okay DCS alarm DCS alarm indication of fire in the laundry compartment rapid response team take action now in any fire respond as quickly as you can okay check it checking the door door is cold cracking the door work got smoke got a confirm fire guys what are you going to do fire fire fire fire fire fire oh actually pull yeah get cracking the door and try to put it out with a fire extinguisher immediately while this team is doing that every other crew member is upstairs getting ready to fight a fire medium just in case it gets out of hand go go so this is a full ship fire response they pull out all the firefighting gear and they put them in the rooms based on your size and you just know what room to respond into apparently today I'm one of the ones responding to that fire okay right in here right in [Music] here there you go out P off P off no no no don't off pull pull the top of it down over there go okay sound like I am your YouTuber it's weird being able to hear your breathing so distinctly though yeah okay now it's firefighting [Music] time I again we're on air now fast air behind her down knel down T smoke I see smoke hot door a real fire in these small spaces on board make it almost impossible to see through the smoke there's so much smoke I can't see the first firefighter you really have to know this boat well to know where you are at all luckily today this is just a smoke [Music] machine clock the door but without these other two crew I wouldn't have a clue where I am on this [Music] ship but the fun part of this is they actually let me use the [Music] hose okay cool awesome thank you good lead that's a good team they're ready hey guys Mike's going to come in all right am I okay to film in here absolutely all right good been tasked with the Jrs this afternoon we're headed outside so I'm going to be joining the bosen today AKA boat swains we are coming up through some Narrows which will be the narrowest part on our Journey it's only about 800 M across so the bosen are going to be here for what's called a cable party just in case they're needed is that kind of right yeah this is Crow here yeah worst case scenario any emergency kind of we're ready to drop the anchor if we need to okay you know stop the ship yeah hoping that's not needed but we're here but what a beautiful day for this could have been a lot worse always gorgeous coming through here yeah if I'm being pass to an outdoor Duty today's the day for it last night was uh dark and rainy this is a lot more appealing so these are the anchors yeah yeah so two cables two anchors on uh either side of the bow on the ship and they have kind of three safeties you can see there's a it's called our bow stoer up forward these are our Devil's claws which kind of suck it down and in and then there's a break so when we drop the anchor that's actually what come off Lefty Loosey righty tidy right oh so we're actually are we going to take the safeties off like are we going through ready y [Music] wow so we're about to turn into the Narrows there the anchors are ready now we just wait now we have timed our Crossing of this Narrows on purpose because as the tides happen that can move a lot of water through the Narrows very quickly we tried to hit at a slack tide at the at the high tide so there's no water moving through it's like in between it coming this way and going back out so it should be the calmest but what that means is all the other tugboats and barges and ships that are passing through here also want to hit the slack Tides this is one of those scenarios where if we were to lose power on board the team's ready to drop the anchor to stop us so we don't run ashore or into another vessel of course we practice those drills this morning so we know how to handle it but everyone is always ready in circumstances with higher risk which is this yeah all right we successfully made it through without having to drop our anchor so perfect no issues so locking up the anchor again we'll continue onwards don't worry we'll get you on camera soon [Music] thank you FKS cured for see both you're driving right now hi sir a minute ago you were watching the anchor do a lot of rolles yeah bosen's a professional saling absolutely okay so right now these are two pods they control like the pods in the the ship y and uh to St is pretty simple whichever way this stick goes so if you're pointing right the ship will go right if you point left the ship will go left okay and we use very little movement uh like a 5° is like way more enough especially this super small movement be right here with you you just try to keep the ship as steady as possible are you trying to hold it hold it at or exactly okay you ready you can start with using that pod and move the stick this way 5 3 that's oh that's too much home right now P 350 so that 15° like it moves the ship a lot right let's try this again and now keep it at 350 keep it at 350 okay super little movements like that move it it green yeah you move uh you move the stick towards the green but you want that tick mark at that red tick okay say ship pretty okay we're sailing that's specials half a degree off either way okay driver me officer of the watch Helmsman off the watch Helmsman relieved by Mike Downey steering course 350 in manual separate dual control port side oh oh that's fine that's fine uh revolutions 180 revolutions 180 ahead 2da online 2D online sir very good perfect that's what you say every time we turn over okay so do your eyes watch out there much or your eyes here and you're being told from them uh where to go ideally you would want to stay here look at the course adjust every minor minute but okay we're only human I look outside sometimes well I'll leave it in your hands but thanks for worries thanks for that wow easy enough and you do that for 4 hours okay it this you see them uh I think they're over there kind of oh wow while watching the whales I noticed something else out of the corner of my eye are we supposed to call Man Overboard man overo over this person overboard drill was not on the itinerary for the day because emergencies in real life are not planned is a boat ready yeah boat uh I so in fact the crew here are not not even told it's a drill buby you're on whip control everyone else go behind look for the person over to the side let's go let's go we are pulling a steep and hard U-turn right now we're going to drop the Zodiac into the water and uh send them to go recover the person in the water watch the Zodiac keep it on the whip watch your good zodiac wa Ry recover the Zodiac recover the Zodiac it looks like they've recovered Oscar they're coming back I hope he's okay put the boat rope in the water ready to be hooked on thank you very much gone back F in even once they have Oscar out of the water and it's clear he's just a dummy take the they continue to treat it as if it's real so to continue this they've now replaced Oscar the dummy with a real person to replicate as if it's a real person but without having to put a real person in the water take off all your clothes literally porpus is jumping there while they're doing a rescue here wow if that isn't life on the sea whales right there while you're working yeah they like to uh pop our wake and everything yeah people over on the b control I control so through the doorways to avoid having to step up and over they pass through control have control I have control perfect have to remove all your clothes sorry about that for shock just going to pump we're not like actually do get the blood pressure 30 60° good job he's okay and I think that's the end of the exercises for today and now we just get to enjoy this seems like the captain had the same idea as myself just I would enjoying the scenery oh yeah never gets old oh I mean is this not why you join the Navy yeah people pay for this and I get paid to do it that's right actually yeah one way of looking at it is this is your office yeah it's uh maybe this is your office that's the office and this is the balcony I guess so how did everyone do with the exercises today really good today was a good day uh yeah first start you know usually it's a little shaky but uh everyone kind of they show up and you know there's always learning there's always you know little mistakes here and there but we self-correct uh and everyone walks away a little bit better than they were the first time so well this is our uh wellness and health hour so I'll let you enjoy that don't let me interrupt it uh but thanks yeah thanks well the exercis is may be done but there's always work to be done we're going to be in the way we're going to be in the way make the be in the way now so are we dealing with these guns or these guns um whichever one is to get all in this Locker we have our two C9 uh light machine guns along with with your barrels um and then also we store our 250 Cals we do store our uh 6 hours our pistols and then also our C8 carbin so that's what we use part of qrt along with the our C9 light machine gun key thing we do keep empty magazines in here so when we draw weapons we can do our function test make sure that the weapons are fully functional and all the phide are working well yeah we're just going to put a layer of CLP on them oil them up wipe them off yeah they were outside in the rain so we just want to make sure to give them a good clean um it just helps with the maintenance and helps it from like jamming and stuff like that when we use them yeah that's a big gun yeah a very big gun um one thing that's different about the 50 caliber 2 or the C9 and C8 is that these are directed weapons what is so what that means is we must wait till we're given an order to engage to be able to actually fire the weapon while the C9 and the C8 and even the hours those are self-defense weapons so if somebody decides to shoot at us we can shoot back automatically both these yeah we have to be told cuz they have to take in consideration of any type of collateral damage because the range yeah of these is significantly more and also the damage output is also seemly more while everything is beautiful and calm at the moment they never stay that way for long and bad news is we're about 4 hours away from uh Open Water the North End of Queen Charlotte sound uh and it's looking quite rough so 2100 tonight into uh the we hours of the morning expecting large Seas on the beam and or uh right ahead as we try our best to teeke keep this is your time to continue to consume gravel if you need it and for all Personnel to secure their kit and the communal kit such that it's not going to cause a danger to ourselves when we start rocking and or rolling uh Ginger Beef please with the Chow noodles I may need to talk to you about gravel yeah you want now whenever yeah I can get your gravel gravel than I'm told we're going to have really rough Seas tonight and you want to take it early so it kicks inone else all right Sam what do I need to know or to expect for tonight drop in there a seat belt seat belt on your rack strapp her in make sure you don't fall over give be a one walk slowly always three point of contact always have your hand ready to grab something okay okay and a and a bag or something nearby don't be surprised if you heard weird noise coming from the bathrooms it's legit at this point keep keep a bir bag with you okay what do you call it h just a puke bag there you go and so you can take them open right up and uh nice preh held open Target for you to aim at when uh it gets a little bit rough later and then like the SEO said when you're done you can just twist it open it'll be done and then into the gash thank you most importantly it's not clear yeah helps a lot but another thing I've noticed that's changed is the lighting so uh during the day no issues with lots of Bright Lights your eyes are all adjusted but at night time red and green light doesn't impact your night vision uh so we have red lights fitted all throughout the ceiling and everywhere else throughout the ship whereas if you ever see someone turn on a white flash light for anything everyone's freaking out saying oh white light white light um trying to cover their eyes protect the night vision for that now that you say it makes sense I thought it was just for Ambiance great more tacal oh yeah tactical movie lighting so with all the gravel in my system I think it's time for bed we'll keep this close to home now I know it seems like I'm going to bed early just after dinner here but I want to get as much sleep as possible if I'm going to get woken up in the middle of the night feeling sick so we're going to bed early okay seat belt all right see you hopefully not in a few hours but possibly good night good night oh that wasn't so bad I I think I slept through the whole night didn't use it we got a big day ahead of us I wonder what they have in store for us today thank you morning morning oh a little rougher out there this is not too bad we're into the rain now and headed into the fog the conditions have suddenly changed we're practically white out and uh oh my God 30 nautical mile winds gusting to 45 holy let's go check it out how bad could it be little bit of rain never hurt anybody you know I just oh okay that's miserable miserable miserable reporting to Dish duty this is our space cuz you heard I'm doing dishes you come in with dishes we got this no one on board is beyond dish Duty he said me I'm above that except for the cooks yeah it up and turn on push the handle it in when the green lights on it means it's going it turns off it means it's done okay nice [Music] work lot of dishes get done clean dishes we got to call about orcas out front to protect the whales we got to cut the engines let's see there you go they're just stra ahead oh wow wow they should be coming towards us coming towards us oh yeah they're going to come off our port side half the crew has come out to see them on the deck and uh what a perfect time the sun's just come out wow wow it's a whole family of them in order to protect them make sure we don't hurt them we turn off the propellers and we are just kind of sitting idle and get to watch them all right I don't know what we're up to now but I was told to dress warmly and report to the back deck looks like they're getting a boat ready hey uh we a Man Overboard call I don't see any station covered by there that doesn't look like Oscar I I think that's a real person ship is pulling a U-turn right now as a prep in the boat for entry while we did practice person overboard rescues yesterday there's an added twist to today's exercise uh-oh the crane has stopped working they're going to pretend as if the crane or the Zodiac doesn't work and we have to rescue the person some other way when they can't put the boats in the water I got to put these guys in the water away rescue swimmer away rescue swimmer down yeah pick up the lines check away hand over hand check away it's not just sending in a rescue swimmer into the cold water there's an entire team ready to heave them up and back on board well he's swimming we have the spine board ready the backup rescue swimmer everyone's here keep he Hammer hand they check away Hammer last check away check away check away check away F check away check away check away great job sharen Oscar we talked about this stay out of the water please it's the simple as H he can't help himself man he just loves to swim he's a fish he loves to swim that's why we love him of course this is all just an exercise Oscar is fine he'll be back to his normal duties soon I have a feeling we're not done with the exercises yet so if you want to grab a life jacket now yep why why would I need a life jacket I uh tips for getting into the boat uh one step at a time okay safe take it slow one hand for the ship one on the ladder there you go you've done this before right oh yeah okay okay we're in good hands I know hard to believe all right there you go buddy okay thank you go cool I have no intention of turning into an Oscar rer Roger wow what a ship back we're also ready to bring the boats alongside to disembark personel what are we doing out here uh yeah so we're just doing some boat training uh because we're doing an exercise that's going to involve her small boats a lot moving Rangers up north uh so today we're just going to be stick doing sticking drills on the ship as she's going underway okay now I'm sure this just looks like we're being sent out to have a nice afternoon in these boats this is the captain uh what's like you're set up good for a little bit of a drag race over if the captain says so M Roger I don't know if it would be a fair race though over so obviously the Navy wants to ensure competency amongst all boats large and smaller and in the next episode we are working doing real life exercises with the Canadian Rangers and we'll be using these boats a lot during that so we want to make sure they are ready the crew is ready so everything goes smoothly next week so what's happening now is the hmcs and Theo is going to get underway we're going to have to track up aside it stick to the side of it and transfer some Personnel on and off of the [Music] ship bring it in and that's called taking it nice and done prow who needs to practice charer your next carry on how difficult would you say that maneuver is uh not too difficult with practice right see these guys who are a little bit less experienced to see how difficult it is that's light work we got we've got some pretty calm calm weather okay this next one's a little bit different going up against the stern come right up against it oh perfect that was slick here we are now we could transfer the photographers anything this is this could be where they hand me a new batteries swap out batteries swap out lenses I'm clearly enjoying my time out here in the water with them but what I didn't expect to hear is this let Mr give a shot at sticking against Bastion over did I hear what I thought I heard off the Record off the off the you want both Swit over swi if you want to drive this for now this might seem Reckless to let an untrained civilian like myself drive a navy boat we have to remember that each of these crew members all started at some point Point without ever having driven a boat you got something there you can only become competent through good instruction and supervised practice this point start coming down and speed forward forward forward forward forward uh but clearly I might need a little bit more practice I'll good I'll good bit of throttle but that's what we're out here for almost perfect that's all good that's all good suck when the Navy is needed they're ready what I've learned is that these are all just normal people I mean have you guys ever thought that this is your Tuesday this is your office yes it doesn't get old for sure so you like this yeah well that's what I mean but they have chosen a remarkable career you will leave enough room for each boat to stick safely on our sh side oh cool do this now sticking all on the same side they're taught these skills by the Navy but more importantly move up Bo given the opportunity to practice and work together until there a seamless unit we got one stuck two stuck the bre off home that's it for our training time to get back on board a fun way now you might think that's it for the exercises but actually things are just about to escalate at 9:30 a 7.2 magnitude earthquake we're going to be working hard but uh perfectly capable of it 250 Mi off the coast of northern BC there was a Tsunami alert fell on me I think it hit my head all units required to submit unit post Earth quick hang in there buddy a a cliffhanger just as things were getting interesting I hope I make it out alive well if you want to watch part two right now the good news is that you can cuz I partnered with nebula if you haven't heard of it before it's a streaming platform by creators for creators and their viewers their audiences you so I'm now on nebula and you can watch my videos there early aka the Navy part two episode is already on
