legend of total war here and today I'm talking to you guys about the units that you should always recruit for your campaigns based around every race on legendary difficulty for mortal Empires so this is the opposite of that video I made a little while back where I spoke about the units that you should probably avoid recruiting that you'd be fine not ever putting into your armies for an entire campaign and you do just fine this is the opposite the units that if you avoided recruiting for your entire campaign you're doing yourself a disservice now that doesn't mean that you have to spam these units although in many cases you could even just having one two or just a few of these units in your army we'll start to see a lot of value in them so by avoiding recruiting these you're doing yourself a disservice with that being said many of these units aren't even recruitable unless you own a specific lord pack or race pack DLC and in fact mortal Empires itself is not playable unless you own turnable Warhammer one which is still the full price that's always been on Steam so for me as an example it would be $90 AUD to purchase total Warhammer 1 today and that's one of the reasons why I've partnered up with instant gaming so instant gaming sources reputable steam codes from developers and publishers and gets them to you guys at a significant discount so taking total bahama as an example it's currently on instant gaming at 83% off which is obviously a huge discount so if you've been on the fence about whether or not to try out mortal Empires I highly recommend it I think it's better than the vortex campaign obviously the vortex campaign is fun but I personally prefer mortal Empires and most of my videos are based around mortal Empires and if you've been on the fence about it you should check out instant gaming I've used it for a little bit now and I found the process to be really quite easy and I've been saving quite a bit of money on games that I've been playing you know on the side also do keep in mind that there are limited numbers of codes that are available at any given time for specific DLCs so check every now and again because sometimes they run out of stock so for example they ran out of stock on mountain blade to banner Lord recently but then they restocked up so if you're not interested so much in getting more Hemet DLC there's other games plenty of other games on the website that you can check out and get yourself a good deal at the end of the day I want to make sure that if I'm gonna partner up with a company that you guys are going to get a reliable way of getting your gaming experience at a cheaper price and that's why I'm partnering up with instant gaming now with that being said let's move in now to number 15 as one of the the least effective unit that you should always recruit for a particular race coming in at number 15 is a unit to belong to the tomb kings it's quite simply the necros Fink's and the main reason for that is because of its massive anti large bonus Tim Kings have a hard time generally speaking dealing with a lot of cavalry and specifically a lot of big beasts so that solution to that is the necros Fink's now it's a tier 5 unit so it's gonna take a while for you to get them but once you start reaching tier 5 in your cities you should definitely prioritize recruiting these before the other ones you should definitely get the McHenry and war Sphinx and hero Titan as well because they're better than most other units you can get but the necros Fink's I think is the one that you're going to get the most benefit out of so with that being said let's move on down to number fourteen coming in at number fourteen is a unit two belongs to these Skaven talking about the rattling guns these are one of the highest damage yielding units in the game and they're good against essentially everything they only really have one weakness and that's attacking settlements because they're just not really very good at shooting up at walls but if you're playing ask Lance prior they do have essentially unlimited ammunition so even if you miss 99% of your shots you'll still be okay this is of course a DLC unit as with plants grow bigger DLC race with the profit in the warlock DLC now the thing about the rattling guns and why it's so far down on this list is because you don't need to spend them in your army I think that only having like three or four in your army is all you need because the scavenging stack does not require spamming troops and keeping a missile focused but a variety of missile units in your army seems to work pretty damn well but I'm definitely putting the escape and rattling guns in for the position for the skyvan but that being said let's move one now to number 13 coming in at number 13 are the darker shades now any variant of the shades is fine and the great news for you guys is that they're not a dlc unit so if you just owned Warhammer 2 you've got access to them and the primary reason for them being on this list is because they can be boosted by so much the base stats of any particular shades doesn't seem like that big of a deal but it really comes down to how much you can boost their range there's a technology that'll boost it there's a Lord skill that will boost it and there's also potentially and if you really want to spend this you have to be a bit cheesy there's a name of power that can boost their range quite significantly as well potentially getting them a maximum range of 205 I think now we're 205 range these armor-piercing missile units are able to out range any high off archer unit basically your primary enemy with their primary strength you are able to actually beat them potentially using shades of any variant the big difference between the different versions of the shades is basically helped with they are in melee the shades with great swords are essentially the best but they're not they're not essential choose whichever one will suit your army the best but anyway with that beings that that's why the shades are on the add the dark elf must recruit list you don't need to spend them in your army having anywhere between 4 and 10 in Irani is ideal and they'll do a good number of casualties on the enemy side for you anyway let's move on now to number 12 coming in at number 12 is a unit in the dwarf roster which is the organ gun now this is one of my favorite type pieces of artillery in the game period I just think that the organ guns are essentially good against everything they're good and a siege they're good against hitting small targets and good against engine large targets and he gets infantry cavalry everything they're super versatile and they're only a Tier four artillery unit the big comparison with dwarf and artillery usually comes down to whether or not to get organ guns or flame cannons considering that flame cannons are tier five they're just not going to be as available and they're also not as good dealing with I guess large units which are the biggest problem for the dwarfs dwarfs don't have a problem with dealing with our infantry so having a bunch of organ guns in your army basically makes things like Giants another Giants are ever a threat but cavalry units and more more dangerous single entity targets just become not a threat at all I've often seen that organ guns can easily get 400 kills in a battle if you're using them right that one of the biggest weaknesses though is friendly fire do not put your units in direct line of fire of an organ garnet because they have a habit of not caring if your troops are right in front of them so sometimes creating gaps in your line will make these guys a lot more effective but I'm definitely putting these guys in on the list at number 12 coming in at number 11 is a unit that belongs to the vampire accounts specifically the skeleton warriors and skeleton spears the the skills and troops for the vampire counts now that's not including grave guard now why essentially one of their weakest units is the unit to go for it's because there's a technology that you can get fairly early on that will make them free of upkeep now you've if you know anything about warfare one of the big things about it is that it's largely based around money economy makes a huge difference as to who's going to be effective in a war cutting down your costs on your units is one big way of making them more effective even if they're not necessarily as strong there are units in this game that are absurdly strong but their cost doesn't make up for word for example dragons dragons often times might be some of the strongest units in the game but they're also one of the most absurdly expensive units making them not super effective now it's okay for the AI to recruit them because they just get money handed to them on a silver plate but as the player you do not get that option you have to manage your finances and if you miss manage your finances it doesn't matter how strong your army is if you can't pay them and that's the big thing with skeletons you don't have to pay them and so by not having to pay them you can spend your money elsewhere specifically on hiring more Lords and the best unit that the strongest unit in the vampire Count roster is their magic users of vampire magic the vampire Lords you know the actual vampires themselves and necromancer's so by having all of the cost sunk into them even if your supply lines are absurd and you got like 15 armies it's still cheaper than getting doom stacks and the thing is these guys here will oftentimes get like a thousand kills in a single battle because they're just that powerful if you know what you're doing this is the kind of thing that not everyone's gonna go for because it's very cheesy I totally understand that but if you want my recommendation try out skeleton spamming it's never let me down but then again I do really know what I'm doing with the vampire counts and if you're unfamiliar with how to cheese these ways and how to how to essentially get the enemy to waste their ammo before the battle or you know if they've got magic how to waste it and snipe their units that kind of stuff then this is probably going to crash and burn for a lot of people but if you practice this technique this is the best vampire count strategy because a skeleton spam army or a group of skeletons spam armies will beat any war that you go up against it'll beat Skaven it'll beat lizard-men it'll be chaos empire dwarves it'll beat anything you just have to know what you're doing and it's all thanks to these units costing nothing coming in at number 10 is a unit that belongs to the green skins now the green skins is kind of a notoriously terrible race at the moment they're essentially a Warhammer one race playing in Warhammer - and they are way behind the times and most of their roster is absolutely terrible they're generally speaking to perform very well but they do have one unit in their roster that is exceptionally good and is pretty much good against any unit in the game and that is the doom diaper catapult so the doom driver catapult it doesn't matter what you target it's pretty accurate against it even if it's a small single entity - an infantry unit - a big arse dragon ogre shaggers it has a good amount of armor piercing damage and will generally speaking be able to dish out its worth in damage in every single battle making it an extremely versatile unit the only big downside to it is it takes three turns to recruit it's a little bit on the expensive side and it's kind of a pain in the ass to get in the first place because you have to research quite a bit in order to get there so it's hard to get but once you get them they should form essentially the backbone of your army with the support of a rack spiders which again is another unit it's exceptionally difficult to get exceptionally expensive but really does perform quite well those those two really are a good combination and every other green-skinned unit is essentially garbage anyway let's now move on to number nine coming in at number nine belongs to the Wood Elves now I kind of have to split the wood elves into two separate races because they kind of are there's the elves part of it and then the Sephora spirit so the elves is represented by telson and their preferred unit the unit you should recruit is the way Watchers these guys can be boosted to absurd degrees having just huge amounts of range the only real weakness they have I guess is dealing with massive amounts of cavalry getting completely overwhelmed by numbers and dealing with waltz settlements now playing as Oracle on the unit that you should recruit is tree men now the big difference as to why you recruit different units for these two races does come down to amber if you're super late in the campaign like I am here and amber is not an issue then you can recruit a mix-and-match army and it's totally fine but at the beginning of the campaign the part where it really matters you should be spending your amber not on units but on upgrading the oak of Ages upgrading your main tree settlements and doing your technologies after you've done all of that and only after you've done that should you recruit these units in in their opposing armies and that's all I have to say on the the what else TARDIS things a little bit complex but those are the units that I recommend coming in at number eight is a unit two belongs in the Empire roster specifically the hill storm rocket battery now these are probably the best anti infantry artillery in the game this thing can just delete any kind of infantry unit with absolute ease provided at that relatively long range is not so good using this a close range because it'll probably hit a lot of your own troops so the thing is with the Empire is that your primary enemy is going to be greenskins norske and chaos and best units are usually going to be infantry based like the chosen the the Marauder Marauder champions and Blackhawks and this unit here will just get rid of them as I've said before you play into your enemy's weaknesses not necessarily their strengths and if their weakness is slow moves in the infantry which is also kind of their strength then you just get rid of it and then you only need to deal with things such as Giants and big monsters iraq-iran spiders that kind of stuff and that's why you give us some support units such as you know hand gardeners crossbowmen other kinds of other kinds of our tools like he'll plaster polygons but these guys here are essentially what gets rid of half of the enemy Army right off the bat before they even get close to you and you don't need to have that many in your army so I definitely don't recommend spamming them in an army and they don't be hugely ineffective you only need say four or five any more than that and I think you're just going to get diminishing returns but I highly recommend getting he'll storm rocket batteries as soon as possible they're Tier four unit they're quite affordable and they will make the mid-game a lot easier for you and they're especially good in a siege as well coming in at number seven is a unit that belongs in the basement roster so this unit here is it necessary like one of the strongest units in the game but why it's ranked probably higher on the list than you might think is is more of about that the Bassman roster in general is kind of lackluster but this unit here is like by far the strongest unit in their army and that is the Sai gore this is essentially the only artillery piece that they have and it's a really good one of that and it's not just an artillery piece it's also pretty good at melee it's not quite as good as a giant but when you take into account their missile damage they'll actually outperform a giant quite easily they're good against infantry they could against cavalry they're good against pretty much everything except for small targets which they just can't hit but they can only just go into melee with and for their price they're really quite effective and that's why they've taken this position on the list coming in at number six is a unit in deep attorney in unit roster which is the Hippogriff not so when it comes to them though I would not recommend just getting one or two if you're going to get them it's better to get them in large quantities now you don't have to go full army spam although that is the most effective way to go about it the reason why they're so effective is because when they go in and on mass charging on sale group of infantry they tend to cause a mass amount of stunt walk even if they don't kill that many of the enemy units when they land and attack the enemies I tend to drop them on their ass so they're attacking the enemy in a huge blob and the enemy isn't really attacking back so while they're on the ground if you don't feel like you're gonna win in that engagement you get and then run and you've essentially gotten free damage and then you can simply go back in and do it again this works better with larger quantity certificates because the more of them there are the more than landing at a time the more stunlock they're doing and the easier it is to get out the longer that you leave them in the blob the harder it's going to be to pull them out if things start to look a bit dicey because generally speaking Hippogriff Knights aren't gonna just beat anything in ballet they need to have some tactics behind them in addition to that having a life wizard able to heal them because they're lower numbers of entities is quite effective but you don't need to go through spam on it that's just a most effective way in my opinion anyway let's move on now to number five coming in at number five is a unit in the vampire coast roster the necro FEX Colossus now you don't have to spend this unit but there's really no other troupe in the vampire curse roster that's even close to being the same quality as these guys they're artillery which are considered undead so you're able to use the invocation of the heck and heal them and they're good in melee so like they're an arc or a cannon and undead unit to heal and essentially a giant in melee they're kind of like even more powerful versions of the cycle except they don't quite have as much range and if you've got a gunnery wide so you can keep giving them or ammunition you know to a point so they're incredibly versatile and there's only like a couple of units in the game that they really struggle with just because they're a little bit inaccurate against like small targets but that being said just sending them into melee in some cases is totally viable very few AI armies are going to be able to handle an echo effects closest to stack or even an army that's just got a few tener effective losses in it so that's why I highly recommend recruiting these units because they're incredibly versatile they're really not that expensive for what they could do and they'll make your battles a lot easier anyway let's move on now to number four coming in at number four is a unit in the Lizardman roster the staggered on now there are four variants of the staggered on in the lism and roster and I'll just go through them all briefly and as to which ones I'm talking about so there's the Farrell staggered on which is available at tier 3 I'm not talking about those you don't need to ever recruit them they're not bad we just don't need them the tier 4 staggered on which is the one I am talking about and this is the one that has an artillery piece with 360 range on its back that's essentially a ballista this is the one I'm talking about then there's the ancients take it on which I don't think is a very good unit I actually think that the tier 4 staggered on is better than the ancients take it on purely because the tier 4 staggered on is an artillery piece and an anti infantry melee feast whereas the ancients take it on while being better in melee is really the only thing it's good at doing it doesn't have that artillery so it doesn't make it as versatile it's not able to demolish walls then there's the engine of the god now the engine of the gods is really good but it's one of those units we're having a loads of them in your army will have diminishing effects because the ability is a little bit micro intensive what I tend to do is rather than actually recruit engine of the Gods I would put a skink priest on a engine of the god mount and since I'm already going to be microing their abilities anyway it's just another one that's there already in the interface ready for me to click on and I generally speaking fine I only ever need a couple of those of those laser beam shots anyway whereas the tearful staggered on shots you just line them up and they'll just shoot at generally speaking pretty good that's because there's really nothing that this shot isn't pretty good at at killing it's quite accurate it'll impale multiple troops oh if it's shooting infantry to impale multiple units at a time cavalry it's especially good at cos cavalry get multiple units impaled and since they have lower entity numbers they just do that is absolutely wrecked cavalry probably the best unit to put them to shoot actually it's cavalry unit really good at shooting beasts and flying monsters as long as they're not too quick so you probably want to avoid shooting at Pegasus Knights bit just because they're just a bit too bit too small but shooting at things like dragons especially good at that and the other thing I want to compare it to is the vasila time because that's one of the big ones that was contested in the previous video because I said you should never pulled a recruiting any of the facility on because you got access to the Tier four staggered on now one of the big comparisons that people made with the best dilettante versus dagger on is missile damage yes the but still Iran does technically do more damage per shot than a staggered on but it also has less range and fires a lot slower and has less ammunition it's not quite as fast it doesn't have anywhere near as much armor its melee stats are nowhere near as good as its take it on so even though technically it does do more damage per shot it'll actually do less damage over the course of a battle then a staggered on and the other advantage being that a staggered on is more expensive than a distilled on yes that's true and but it's not enough to be worth the cost of of getting a yeah but still it on over it considering its at the exact same tier from the exact same building I wouldn't ever bother going for a solar engine over a staggered unprovided I've actually got the funds so that's my argument for the staggered ons I've been using staggered on spam stacks for ages and it's in my opinion an unbeatable combination if you also put a life slant in there to heal them I've been able to take on multiple armies at a time they're even able to take on things like Slayers as long as you again keep healing them or buffing them they're just an incredibly versatile unit and which is why this unit was put on the top five doom stack video anyway let's move on now to number three coming in at number three is a unit in the voice of chaos roster the dragon oh gosh I guess now the primary reason why it's so high up on this list is because it is strong against everything that the enemy is weak against you know when playing as words of chaos are going to be going up against us into the Empire and dwarfs and petronia and those guys will have way better missile units on you now the funny thing as well is that dragon ogre shaggers have very similar combat abilities as two giants and in my previous video I mentioned that Giants you basically shouldn't ever recruit them so if there are similar combat abilities why would you recruit a dragon Oh Gachet goes over a giant as an example well it's because for one thing hey shag earth has gray more missile resistance in terms of armor and just roll missile resistance and it's also the big thing is speed a giant is not able to close the distance and get into combat very quickly whereas a shaggers can that means that the enemy will get fewer volleys in on you before you've engaged into the fight and also a shag earth is able to pull through units a lot easier so you can pull through the enemy Miller units and get to the missile units and block them down Giants will get bogged down a lot quicker another thing is that if the fight isn't favorable which a lot of times it won't be as shaggers can pull out quite easily and in fact outrun some cavalry units whereas a giant once it's in combat it and kind of needs to win up because there's really no getting out of it otherwise because it'll just die trying to walk away because just to slow and that really is the crux of why this is so high up on the list there really isn't anything even close to being the same level as a dragon ogre shaggers in the Warriors of chaos roster that's why it's such a must recruit you don't have to spend them and get whatever you want but the more of them you get there really isn't any downside because even though they're quite expensive to maintain you'll be able to kill more enemies faster which will yield you more money since the primary way of making money as the voids of chaos is just by causing destruction whereas if you go with other units you can have to replace them and in camp more go back and lick your wounds a lot more often so even though the more expensive you'll make more cash which will more than make up for it anyway let's move on now to number two coming in at number two is a unit in the high off roster the sisters of Abaddon now this one's a little bit weird because it's not as strong as a shaketh but it's higher up on the list why is that why do I always go one about Sisters of Avalon a lot of people have a a lot of trouble utilizing these units and I can understand why this is not necessarily the easiest unit to use but if you understand a couple of core principles you'll essentially never lose a battle you have to consider this that the AI is not necessarily going to recruit armies to take out your doom stacks so the armies that you could potentially go up against that would absolutely roll over a sister of avalon army are going to be extremely rare or they might not even show up at all probably the most common army that would give you the most problems would be a lizard manraja primeval glory army and those armies tend not to be at least full of dinosaurs and even then you can still beat them and there's very few armies in the game that can actually beat it because when it comes down to it sisters of Avalon have one of the highest missile damage attacks for an r2 unit in the game only exceeded by the way watcher now the way watcher was weighed lower down the list if a wayward should compare to assisted Avalon in a in a skirmish why Sisters of Avalon higher up on the list well it comes down again versatility a high of faction will be able to field far more Sisters of Avalon armies then a water of army will be able to field a way Watchers so you'll be able to get more of them because they're more efficient for your cost they're not a very expensive unit forest here so they're not a huge cost on your bank and that kind of stuff does matter it's similar to the situation with the vampire accounts whereas you go with cheaper units not necessarily stronger units because it's better for your economy not that the hires have a problem with their economy but if you've got the money if I really wanted to I could just keep on recruiting these armies and numbers do make a big difference whereas if you've got with dragon spans which is stronger than its sisters of ever gone spam you're going to have fewer armies there's going to be situations where you might just get a little bit overwhelmed and when it comes down to it finally is that the sisters of Avalon can be boosted by absurd degrees if we have a look at the stats here you can see it's it's a melee defense which is all like the core stat for its malleability is 69 now that that 69 Mela defense is boosted by at the agents and of course by Al Ariel which there is basically no other unit in the high off roster that can be boosted by as much as a sister of Avalon there is so much you can do to just make them stronger give their missile resistance magic resistance extra missile damage extra Mela defense I've seen sisters of ever lon take a frontal charge from Demi Graf nights and basically brush it off because they're so good in melee so setting up a square formation with them having the frontline you don't need frontline infantry as sisters Evelyn because they can act as front line infantry if you run out of ammunition you can send the sisters of Avalon into Mellie because they're good fighters they actually have a really good weapon strength and they've got good melee attack and Miller defense they're better than say white lines of crease which are just Miller units so that's the big thing with sisters Avalon it's not that they're individually the strongest unit in the game it's just that they are so good at everything that there's going to be so few situations where they're going to be scratching their head going out damn it we're not ready for this because again they're just super versatile and that's what put some so far up on this list now let's move on to the number one item on this list coming in at the number one spot is a unit in the North Canosa it is the war mammoth specifically the the Tier four variant although you could go with the war shrine although it's a as a tier above its then really its combat stats are exactly the same so what is it about the war mammoth we already know that it's just an incredibly powerful unit it's really on the tier of dread saurians and maybe a dread saurian can actually beat and war mammoth but a the thing is as the Norse consarn tree aliy going to have to worry about lizard-men this is a big thing the things that can beat a war mammoth you don't have to worry about so necrose Sphinx spam the AI is not going to do that and you're not going to go up against the new tomb Kings anyway not for a long time and by the point that you actually come in contact with them you'd probably be on a roll of them anyway a dragon oh gosh agar spam army would probably be a warm atmosphere me again the AI never recruits dragon ogres anyway and the one army that does have it when they spawn only as a couple of them and a mammoth spam will beat it anyway or a giant spam will actually beat a war man a spam but again you're not going to be going up against that you should focus on units that are going to be for factions that you're going to deal with not for factions that you're not going to deal with so when it comes down to it what are the what are the enemies of the North Coast it's the Empire of Britannia and the dwarfs and maybe the hyo's well when it comes down to it all of those factions don't really have any units are particularly good against war madness because his thing even Slayers even giant Slayers don't stand a chance against war malice and one of the primary reason for that is because of the era of effectiveness of its attack its base stats don't seem like it's that much right but here's the thing a war mammoth when it attacks it attacks like seven to ten units right I don't think there's any other unit in the game safer maybe dread asourian's that can kill as many units in a single hit as of war mammoths have you ever used a war mammoth line to charge into enemy infantry their line goes from full red to just gone in just a single charge because they just dish out so much damage to so many units all at once even if their weapons strength is lower than other units in the game and when it comes down to it the rest of the North's Carrasco is so terrible that this is the only thing that they have to stand a chance against the Auto type which is a big problem at the moment you know at least in vanilla not so much for a problem in the proving grounds but here's the thing in the proving grounds the strongest race in the game is norske because they don't have to worry about supplier lines and not having to worry about the audit ID they just become super powerful in fact look let's not get too much into the proving grounds because it's a big problem with an Oscar in that they are way too powerful if you know what you're doing but when it comes down to it war members are exactly what you need to just stomp on your enemy now of course some people aren't going to want and that's totally fine the great thing about war members is get one get two the more you get the stronger you're going to be but you don't have to spam them but just understand this every other unit Indy and the north can roast Oh is basically a piece of [ __ ] in comparison especially giants anyway with that being said that's the end of this list hope you guys enjoyed it don't forget to check out the instant gaming link in the description below if you haven't purchased some of the Warhammer 2 DLC now's a good opportunity to try to get a good deal and experience the full gameplay I guess that this game has to offer and there's other deals there as well anyway that's in this one hope you guys enjoyed it and if you disagreed with any of the items on this list do feel free to leave a comment down below I am curious because for one thing you guys did actually change my mind about bloated corpses I no longer I believe I was actually wrong about bloated corpses do you guys actually you convinced me I don't like bloated corpses I certainly don't think they weren't the best shooters but I don't think they're one of the worst units anymore either but if you can convince me as to which items don't belong in this list either who knows you might convince me as well anyway that's the end of this one I'll see you next time [ __ ]
