UniFi Teleport - Easy Setup VPN

welcome to crosstalk solutions my name is chris and in this video we're going to set up ubiquiti's teleport vpn service in order for you to connect into your own unifi network but before we get right let's go ahead and hop right into it there's a great article called get to know teleport essentially this kind of goes over all of the basic details i'm going to go over them here as well but essentially teleport is a one-click vpn that allows you to remotely connect to a unifi os consoles network and by udm consoles they're talking about the dream machine the dream machine pro the dream machine pro se sherwood edition or the dream router you also have to be running unify network version 7.1 or higher and you have to have the wi-fi man app installed on your smart device so essentially what this allows you to do is connect into your home or business network remotely right so there's multiple different types of vpn there's site-to-site vpn that's where you've got a router doing a vpn connection to another router and all of the devices on either side you know with permissions can speak to each other across that vpn link then you've got services like private internet access nordvpn those are also vpns but in those cases you're surfing through their vpn out to a vpn proxy server on the internet in order to mask your location increases privacy you can look like you're coming from a different geographical spot in the world etc etc so this is neither of those two things this is for when you need to you know say you're staying in a hotel room and you need to connect into your local home or small business network in order to grab a file or use a service that exists only on that network unify's implementation of teleport is based on wireguard vpn wireguard vpn is a very fast and efficient vpn service and it does not store any data they're very clear about that and that's really all there is to it there's not much to this setup so let's go ahead and pop right in here i am on unifi os on my udm pro uh this is unifios version 1.12.24 and i am running unify network version 7.2.91 so we meet the minimum requirements we are okay to enable teleport so to enable teleport i'm going to come over here to settings then i'm going to click on teleport and vpn now in my case this is already enabled but if you have not enabled teleport if this is unchecked you're going to want to check the box next to teleport and now essentially we want to generate a new link and if we hover over the invitation information it says generate a unique link for a user to click and get access to your teleport network this link will open the wi-fi man app on their device so let's go ahead and do generate new link and there we go so it says the link is for one user only it shouldn't be shared with more than one user if we look at the invitation history we can see that i have a pending invitation with this link and we're just going to go ahead and copy that url so at this point you would now take this url that i've copied you'd email it or get it to the person that needs to connect in remotely they're going to open up their wi-fi man app and then click on that link and it will enable teleport so let's go ahead and do that next okay i've clicked on the link from my email and we say connect to udm pro complete setup that's the name of my dream machine pro we're going to say connect it automatically open the wi-fi man app we're going to agree and continue to the terms and it says connecting activating tunnel and we're connected that's it just like that folks simple simple simple also notice in the bottom right hand corner of this screen i now have a teleport icon where there wasn't one previously if i click on clients i can see a teleport icon next to crosstalk iphone and it says the connection is teleport and the ip address is 192.168.3.1 i will note that the ip address that teleport uses is not configurable so you basically just have to take whatever they configure as the teleport network or the teleport land subnet and you don't have a choice in that i've heard that that might be changing in the future but for now uh it is what it is right so going back to my phone we should be able to see vpn information right there 192 168 3.1 so when the ip address for vpn on my phone matches the ip address that i see in unify and so we are good to go now let's go ahead and test this out we're going to do a ping test and we're going to ping 192 168.1.2 that is my true nas server and we can actually ping the trunas from the outside world into uh my teleport now let's go ahead and stop this i just realized that i am actually connected to that same wireless network so i'm going to go ahead and change my wi-fi over to a different network okay so looking at the info screen here we can see that i have changed my ssid i have a totally different ip address it's not connected to that dream machine network at all whatsoever but the vpn did reconnect at 182 168 3.1 so i should still be able to run that same ping test start and there we go i'm able to ping the truenas let's see if i can bring up the interface and there we go i've pulled up the interface and i would be able to log into my truenas server remotely i would also be able to you know if i was connecting from a laptop just browse over to some sort of nas share and download files i have used this remotely when i'm on the road and i forgot that i needed a file from my home nas i can just connect in and then download the file through vpn so there you have it very quick very easy to enable teleport and allow remote access into your home network or your small business network whatever happens to be behind your unifi os console and i will reiterate that it is best to create a brand new link for every single different user that needs to connect in that way you can easily disable those users if you have to now if we open up my link page again we can see that the status of my link is accepted and then here is where i'd be able to revoke access uh if for some reason i no longer trusted this particular user all right that's gonna be it if you guys enjoyed this video make sure you
