they say when it rains it pours and right now we are experiencing a veritable Monsoon of new unicorn Overlord information and footage my name is Tom otherwise known as tanium legman and welcome back to the channel unicorn Overlord hello everyone as I say at the start of every video a like and a subscription would be very much appreciated on this video If you appreciate what I do but with unicorn Overlord coming out right around the corner I want to take just a second to do slightly more self-promotion by letting you all know that I have a special tier on my patreon which you can find a link to in the description wherein if you subscribe at that tier you get to make a custom character for the campaign in unicorn Overlord or any strategy RPG that allows custom character creation that I will then use throughout the campaign you'll be able to Name the character choose their class what their design is if possible what gender they are etc etc and you will be a permanent member of the squad so long as you don't die alongside other members of the community if that's something that interests you you would be supporting me directly so again check it out in the description down below and if you just want to support in general because you enjoy what I do you can join the other folks who you will find at the end of this video in patreon or my YouTube memberships those links are there as well thank you so much to anyone who decides to support directly it helps more than you could possibly imagine now on with the content when I say that we are experiencing a monsoon of unicorn Overlord coverage I am not speaking hyperbole here legitimately my notes document has boned out to six pages of just notes not even proper scripting as more and more information comes out due to previews and other footage that are being posted all across the internet we're talking sources in both English and Japanese and while there are a lot of articles that have come out there are in particular a few bits of video that have been particularly informative that I'm going to be drawing from here as well as new information that was posted on the official unicorn Overlord site where possible I will be giving credit credit and attribution to whatever footage that I utilize but I mean the floodgates are open so if I miss something I do apologize I'm going to do my absolute damn this here also there was a little bit of a snippet of the OST posted on YouTube as well you'll be able to hear that throughout the background of the video I'm not going to just play it on its own due to potential copyright reasons but you'll hear it here because it's the game's music so I'm going to weave it in with the other music that we've been using from Dragon's Crown and 13 Sentinels now starting off in this video we're going to be talking talking about the story and characters and the major mechanics that have been revealed as part of this content drop then because there is just so much to discuss I'm going to release a second video tomorrow the 17th if you're watching this on release where I talk about any other combat details that I've been able to glean and there's a lot as well as things we've learned about map exploration if somehow during the creation of these videos even more information comes out I will weave that into the second video but for now we're talking new story beats what that implies about some mechanics and then all of the new mechanics that we've learned about as well let's talk about those story and characters at the start of noisy pixels video preview here we can see that Queen Elena's Squad is doing battle with numerous enemies in the Royal Capital as we now know this is the intro to the game and is obviously constituting a flashback seeing as how the main story line takes place in quote unquote modern time with Elaine as our protagonist we can also see here that ysep is not gray in this footage he is actually a brown-haired gentleman as he is taking up the role of protector for us at Elena's insistance whereas we know when he's guarding a lane in the current time he has gone gray it also serves as the game's tutorial and we'll see a number of familiar faces here hodrick who has now been named as a hoplight as opposed to just a traditional armor knight or at least his promoted class is who we know we purify early in the game and turn to our side as well as Elena the witch who we know was once the court sorcis of elain's kingdom of cornea and eventually turned on them by joining the enemy and renalt a mounted Knight who actually do battle with early in the game as can be seen in this footage here well I'm not sure who the soldier in the back of the formation is it's clear there's going to be an undercurrent of betrayal and potentially Redemption for many of the Queen's former compatriots will this tie into the ability to recruit red units that I've been theorizing about will alcena be Redeemed by the end of the game only time will tell but I feel like there's a greater than zero chance speaking of recruiting Reds in this scene here we can see Hardy Hammer wielder morn is an enemy unit protecting the fort that Elaine is invading but we know he joins us as seen in this scene here so clearly we recruit him the only question is how and again maybe it'll have to do with the Ring of the Unicorn we get a full cut scene of interaction between the queen and valmore the enemy General that has apparently United the continent under his Banner by Elaine's time and as far as we know the big bad of the game we also finally have a name for this Angelic Warrior that we've seen a number of times o oakus oess I'm going to assume oist until told otherwise I'm sure I'm pronouncing it wrong someone will correct me please do and this is a very minor detail but does seem that certain classes have specific battle intros well most characters have been seen running or leaping into the battle which Jana and other witches as well appear in a swarm of bats which is a fun little touch uh at the end of battle characters will also have different Victory poses and in particular witches actually wind up sitting on their little cloud of bats which is very cute a very vanillaware touch I like it a lot with certain story details and things like that out of the way though the real meat and potatoes of this video the mechanics and there is so much to talk talk about here my eyes have been opened everything is clear now we actually have a good point-to-point understanding of how unicorn Overlord is going to play so let's talk about it first off the active and passive points that I've talked about previously I was nearly writing how I named them by the way people were questioning well it's if it's an action point or a passive Point implies you can activate one but the other is not and if they both activate on their own that's technically passive listen the game calls them active and passive points so we're going to run with it okay we finally know how they work in battle as we had previously theorized they activate to use attacks and support abilities respectively and they do so in a set order based on the strategy that you set for each of your characters Tom what's a strategy you might ask oh boy will we be talking about it but in a second let's finish talking about these points first your troops will use an active point or more if needed to use one of their attacks on their turn and only on their turn in response enemies and allies both can use passive point to empower the attack block it Etc this pattern will repeat until all the action points for both squads are depleted at which point a winner is declared and you return to the battle map this presents an interesting balance with high cost attacks like those used by the swordmaster right it's impressive and I'm sure highly damaging yeah probably very effective when you get to use it but it's also probably the only attack you're going to get without a very specific setup so if it gets blocked or your unit somehow gets stunned or something else happens that interrupts the action and costs you your points it's going to be a real feel bad so I'm guessing that one cost attacks are going to be king until you can set up your units and strategems to open the enemy to expensive attacks like this to really make it worth it so you know you're not going to be wasting your points simple attacks that reduce physical defense magical defense prevent enemies from doing as much damage things like that are going to be bread and butter for a lot of units maybe you'll have one unit in your squad that has a really big costly attack that they use after everyone else goes but I can't imagine that until like the very late game with very specific strategies you'll be running around with three cost attacks on everybody Meanwhile your passive points are for pretty much everything else and we've seen the way that they play out healing guarding buffing debuffing all of these things cost passive points and what's interesting is that while the battle ends once all active points have been used up ostensibly you do have the ability to use passive points for things like healing at the end of the battle once all enemies have been defeated depending on how you have your strategy set up which again we're about to talk about as we can see in this clip here so that's a nice little quality of life thing that would be hard to accommodate for in the way that unicorn overlord's battles are kind of set up you can't just have a cleric running around on the field in between major fights like in a fire emblem game and just healing people up before they go back to Casting magic or whatever it doesn't quite work that way so this is a nice little touch now strategems this is where the single biggest point of strategy perhaps unsurprisingly is going to come into play every single character in every single squad has the ability to essentially be programmed from the ground up by you to function in a certain way you can select your active and your passive abilities and arrange them in order of importance from an ascending to descending scale then you can customize every skill with up to two conditions for its activation like specific enemy targeting or Ally targeting HP threshold triggers Etc ET once you get into a battle your units will then decide what abilities to use based on this priority order your custom conditions for each strategy and the battlefield conditions in front of them this is going to be insane there is going to be so much that you can do with this make every single character function differently from one another if you want it's already been widely compared to the Gambit system of Final Fantasy 12 if you're familiar with that and while I wasn't a fan of it there back in the day I suspect I'd like it far more now I can see it working incredibly well in a strategy title like this I can only imagine the build crafting possibilities that we're going to have from predicting how units will behave and how battles will unfold and designing strategems around that right like you're literally crafting a strategy for your characters to follow that they will then execute on like it's not just you manually inputting like I want this character to go here and attack this unit with this steel sword to break them like that's a different type of strategy this is you as the battlefield Commander saying you're going to move in this way and you're going to support each other in that way and you're going to Target these specific enemies because they have a particular type of strategy that they're going for and this is how we're going to counter it and then you get to watch it unfold it is going to be so cool to see and while it's obviously going to take a lot of menuing especially as we're first getting used to it it's going to be so satisfying it's going to be so satisfying to sit there and figure out exactly how you want your army to function based on what it is that's coming up on the field of battle or just how you like them to function in general and then actually seeing it unfold I love it when a plan comes together that's what this game is going to be 100% I'm I'm blown away I'm so excited for this this is going to be an awesome system to Tinker with as I'm sure you can tell I'm extremely excited about it but no worries if it seems overwhelming or like just too much you don't want to have to deal with it you can customize using an auto assign function to set up strategems that should get the job done as well it probably won't be the most efficient thing around sure but it should get you through note as well that we should also be able to get skills from equipment that you can give to your units something I've talked about in a previous video so I see this getting absolutely nutty in the mid to late game once you start combining unit skills equipment skills getting them all arrange to do specific things it's going to be wild moving on from strategy there are a number of other important mechanics that we need to talk about including fatigue you see above each unit there's a little number you might have noticed it in a lot of the pre-release coverage that I've been doing and just everyone else have been doing as well now and what that is is a representation of a certain number of actions or battles that any given unit can engage in before they need to rest this limit is represented Again by that number next to the unit and once it's reached you'll have to take time to rest and recover the issue is that a unit that is attacked while resting will be completely defenseless not counterattacking at all or taking any other actions as well so you're going to need to be very careful about how hard you push your squads you don't want to have them accidentally just because you weren't paying attention or whatever run out of stamina in the middle of fighting a bunch of enemies and then just have two or three squads just whale on them for free I'm quite sure that they won't survive so knowing when to fall back rest up send in other units to cover is going to be important and it means that the way you move your units around the battlefield is going to be just as important as how you set up your strategy which is nice we also have more information about Valor abilities which is something that we had seen as early as the initial trailer but finally have some more information about these are abilities that can be activated using Valor points you can see up here in the lefthand corner that you earn in battle from doing certain little side objectives and missions garrisoning units and structures and equipment and all sorts of stuff like that uh and there're typically attacks that affect an area on the battlefield without actually entering a fight if you're familiar with Super Robot Wars we call these map attacks however it's important to note that you also need to spend Valor points to deploy more units from your home base so you you really shouldn't just spend them all on these admittedly very powerful abilities otherwise you might put yourself in a situation where you can't get reinforcements when you need them and that'll be a really bad time remember stamina fatigue going to be very important being able to bring out fresh units from the base also very very important as a result some of the abilities that we've seen are toughness which prevents stamina loss after battle and knocks the enemy unit back arrow rign which deals AOE damage with a bonus delt to Flyers heavy swing an attack that damages all units in an area as well as destroying all barricades and wild Rush which damages all enemies in range deals bonus damage to squads led by infantry and it seems like moves the squad through the targets to the other side as well so it's a positioning tactic a couple other important things to note as well seeing as how we're talking about stamina not losing battles and everything when a unit either yours or the enemy loses a battle but is not defeated completely they'll actually be sent flying back and be stunned for a short duration if they're attacked in that time the attacker will get the initiative and take their actions first guaranteed so avoiding losses and capitalizing on your opponent's openings and weaknesses will be very very important as you'll be able to get even more attacks in as a result also when starting a battle or a stage it's important to note that you're doing it live enemy units will be moving your way immediately so you need to make make sure that you pause quick spend some Valor points choose your units to deploy and get them out there of course you are able to pause and unpause at will allowing you to give your troops orders on the fly without risking missing something happening Elsewhere on the field very very nice if this was happening in like a real-time Strategy Starcraft scenario it would be infinitely more stressful there are also some Battlefield fixtures that we've seen around uh we talked about things like barricades or Siege and defense Towers before uh but there's a little bit more that we've learned now we've seen divine effes around the battlefield that allow for certain Battlefield effects when manned by a unit such as rain which heals and revives all units nearby which seems insanely busted Thunder which deals Thunder damage to units in an area as well as immobilizing them uh there are campfires which can be used to heal nearby allies and potentially restore their stamina and perhaps most interestingly to me at least Siege equipment which will be vital for taking certain objectives thus far we know of battering rams and catapults but there's likely to be more as well uh the battering ram we have seen is used to take down the gates to a city that you're invading so it seems like a more needed objective type of thing than something that will be commonly equipped and used uh they need to be manned by one of your squads to be used notably but this does not prevent the squad from using any attacks so it does essentially become a temporary piece of equipment that they can use for the rest of the battle it's just not something that they're going to be utilizing all the time you can't just as far as I know throw a catapult on a squad or a battering ram on a squad and be like you are The Siege company now doesn't seem to work that way kind of battle field specific and those are the major mechanics and story beats that I've gleaned from this massive drop of info that we've seen thus far are there things that I potentially missed absolutely if so drop them in the comments and I will be more than happy to follow up either in the comments or in my following video you might have seen some of these details already from other major Outlets who've been covering the game or other creators like coffee potato friend of the channel and obviously a very well-known Creator in the tactic space as well follow him check out his stuff if you haven't been already uh but but there's a lot of details that I pulled out of everything that's been shown thus far that wasn't really talked about as a major mechanic right that everyone is talking about things from footage and screenshots and the like that I think are very important to discuss and we'll be doing that in the followup video again I split these up because otherwise the video would just be absolutely massive and it would probably have taken too much time for me to get out in a timely manner so this way I can put out a couple of different videos give you guys some time to digest things in between and have a little bit more time for myself to edit and process what it is that I'm looking at cuz I am just I am bum rushing through all of this right now especially because I'm on a nday streak of work so I'm quite tired but um thank you all so much for watching I do very much appreciated of course my name has been Tom otherwise known as titanium legman and thank you again to anyone who decides to join as
