UFC Fighter Dustin Poirier Breaks Down His Tattoos | GQ Sports

a lot of street fights out I don't even know how many you know not bragging or happy but I definitely got into some scuffles I tell these guys all the time they kind of they kind of bust my balls in Louisiana and Mississippi and the places I was fighting I was 18 years old fighting 35 year old men where I'm from in Lafayette Louisiana a lot of guys had tattoos before they were 14 and all of them were blotchy and horribly done by tattooed guns they were made at the house you know from guys who've learned the art to making bad decisions my grandfather was in the Navy was kind of a rougher gentleman and he had his chest his legs his arms I mean he's still alive and that was he still lives that guy but first tattoo I ever got I was 14 years old but it was a D on my shoulder with some flames on it and a pair of dice underneath it I got it done in a guy named Shorty's house I don't even know his real name a homemade tattoo gun I'm not even sure why the dice and the flames yeah I guess just being 14 years old man there came a point where I just kept getting these street tattoos done over the course of a few years my mom was like Hey look just stop doing it I'll sign consent for you let's go to a real tattoo shop if you're gonna keep doing this to your body let's just do it legally and do it with the real artist and where you won't get a blood disease or something on my right hand I have inspire and on my left hand I have faith I have a fleur-de-lis on my left hand it's just a French symbol for royalty and stuff and I'm French the French came from Canada to Louisiana even the flag from where I'm from Lafayette Louisiana Katie and flag we have a fleur-de-lis on it obviously the Saints helmets the fleur-de-lis is were on crowns a lot on Kings crowns and stuff like that I have a crown on my right hand I don't know why just cuz it's cool underneath the crown I have my grandmother's name Glenda underneath the fleur-de-lis on the left side I have my wife's name and then top mom I have my mother's name I was raised by my mother and my grandmother I don't have one tattoo that was done outside laughs at Louisiana nuts my name I got that down in Florida when she was born I have four woman's name tattooed on me you know I guess I was raised about women so that's just very powerful like I never really planned any of this it was just like in the moment whatever it like that week it came to me I'm gonna get another tattoo and I just did it they'll have a dove here I have a Louisiana outline here the boot and then I have a Magnolia which is like state flower I feel the Louisiana in with that and have a tiger here the day me and my wife got married she has on the back of her neck blood bought paid in full I'm a Christian like I'm forgiven for my sins that's what that means you know everyone like at the time of my life when I got it I can go back and remember what was going on at that time it's like a passport full of stamps you know of my life we have a rose and rose petals falling fire like a star scene Jesus here a Phoenix here just from overcoming things and rising up my bicep a Japanese war mask Oh under here is a cover-up these huge blocks I used to have my area code 337 I was just like man that's silly and it was done really bad and so I covered it up with this I have a huge cross on my thigh it's like solid black huge it was homemade and it was done really bad it was like the only way to fix it was to just do it big and solid you know but it's cool man it's twist my story I did like a tiger stripe ran all across my chest over my heart we were thinking to put something in the middle and we put the Bushido code was just like Japanese for the way of a warrior it means a lot of things but just that lifestyle you know having a fighter's heart and that's why I put it over my heart I think I was always a fighter I just had it in me my whole life you know and it got me into a lot of trouble but as I got older it became something that I really fell in love with getting better in life lessons and camaraderie you know I just really enjoyed this now I love this life I didn't choose it it kind of just happened
