it's that time of the year again and we have a new ubun 2 and a new Fedora both releasing at the exact same time federa 39 and Ubuntu 23.10 have dropped with refresh desktops updated kernels and the and a lot more side by side we'll also objectively see which of these two is the best I've been playing with the newest of Ubuntu and Fedora since they both hit beta and I'm really excited to share description below and get your Linux Mastery Express we are running a massive 45% discount right now so make use of it starting off with the user interface this is where we see huge differences between fed 39 and u 2 23.10 now both of these systems feature the same G 45 desktop but how they implement it results in vastly different experiences UB 2 23.10 comes with a fully custom customized gnome 4tify that looks absolutely gorgeous out of the box we get the standard UB to do on the left side this houses all your favorites and running apps then the status controls are here on the top right gome 45 brings a revamped activities button now we get an animated button here that also lets you know which workspace you're currently in you can also scroll on this icon to switch between workspaces this is a really nice change and it looks good here too UB to's gnome uses the yaru theme instead of gnome's default adua yaru makes the desktop look very polished it's an orange premium brush ENT to's signature orange tint is used everywhere and it gives the desktop its own identity all the applications as well as the shell looks so uniform together UB 2 also gives us a dark theme that's just as premium if not more I for one feel that the dark uben 2 is proper eye candy look at how good everything looks here uben 2 also gives us its own yaru icon pack and I personally love these icons there is that touch of family in this icons and they look like they belong here the applications look good here the desktop looks good and the wallpaper fits in here uben 2 also uses its own UB 2 fonts and has one of the best font renderings of all the Linux Stores u 2 provides a very premium desktop experience and even the attention to detail is there everything is super polished here and it's just a fantastic experience to use this Fedora 392 ships with the gome 4 desktop but there are no additional customizations here no fify is presented in its purest form and it looks super elegant there was a time when the words stock gome and dull could be used in the same sentence but ever since gnome 40 series came out gnome desktop has been on a completely new level looks wise federo 39 looks very good with its blue accents and this wallpaper there's a strong contrast between this desktop and that of UB 2s Fedora doesn't have a dock on the screen but you press the super button or the activities button to invoke this Dash This has your running and favorite applications here and you can also use the search on this screen there's also an app here that has all your applications now if you're using a laptop you can use three finger swipes up and down to invoke the activity screen and the app Gade the inclusion of a dock in ubben 2 radically changes the workflow from stock gome and personally it changes it for the better I mean you can easily open favorites and even switch between running apps directly here on stock gome it becomes a two-step operation but of course the proper way to use stock gnome is to use mouse and keyboard combo to get around Ubuntu and fed even when they are based on the same verion of the same desktop have their own workflows which one resonates with you the most is definitely a big deciding factor when you want to choose one but yeah both have seriously good-looking desktops finest in the business but looks are a very subjective matter you might like blue I might like orange so in the user interface Department both get a point each software availability is another area where we see tremendous differences between Ubuntu and feder both the dros belong to very different families and have different philosophies regarding software delivery this one thing can be the deciding factor for you when you want to choose between these two UB 2 has very large software repositories and pretty much any software you want can be installed here directly either using the terminal or the software store by the way Ubuntu 23.10 brings an absolutely new software store to us and this is simply called the app center now the app center has a fresh new design and a new experience this new app center is created using the flutter framework Ubuntu had announced that it would be using flutter as the choice of Technology for building all ubben 2 apps hence forward and we are seeing this ubben 2 has its own packaging format called Snap and these snap apps are being very strongly encouraged by UB 2 the new app center at the moment mostly displays snap apps pretty much everything here is a Snap app while snaps do have their benefits if you want to install do de packages you need to search for the software and manually apply the de package filter to get it the old software store allowed you to switch between packaging formats in the package screen itself that feature is not not yet available in the new app center but I reckon it's coming soon ubun 2 as the most popular Linux store enjoys phenomenal software availability any software created for Linux will be available here for simple and convenient installation I'm talking browsers office utilities programming tools games and pretty much anything else you can think of Fedora 2 has amazing software availability its repositories although not exhaustive as ubun repositories still contain an incredible number of packages on top of that Fedora brings in flat packs to give you amazing selection of software the software store here lets you install full native RPM packages as well as flat packs you can switch between package formats using this drop down Fedora always brings well tested and new packages along with every new release so you can expect a fresh user experience from Fedora 39 using snaps and flat packs you'll be getting the latest version of all the software these unified packages contain all their dependencies package along with themselves so they run flawlessly for long I had been resisting using snaps and flat packs and have tried maximum to keep my system full native only but recently I opened up and these unified package managers definitely have their advantages I'm really enjoying them snaps and flatbacks vastly simplify packaging for software developers so desktop Linux has been seeing a steady inflow of new software that in my opinion is the biggest advantage of these unified packages and both Fedora and Ubuntu capitalize on these new technologies yeah Ubuntu 23.10 and fedora 39 have big differences in how they deliver software they have their own different software repositories they use different package managers they even go different routes in the unified package manager choice but ultimately it's highquality software availability that they both deliver there is that quantity of packages that lets you find anything and everything you want and these packages are high quality well tested ones at that software availability on both Fedora and ubu is leading standards both get a point each in this department performance is an area where ubun 2 and Ferra XL both the systems are very optimized on a wide range of Hardware both are powered by the same Linux 6.5 kernel now this kernel brings improved performance in many areas firstly read and write speeds for Linux file systems like ext4 and btrfs has been improved with many ingenious code improvements this means improved app launch speeds on both UB 2 and Fedora people using AMD Zen based computers are set to receive performance boost with this kernel there's good news for Intel users as well Linux 6.5 introduces tpmi technology for Intel processors which is set to improve the processor efficiency with Linux 6.5 Wi-Fi 7 gets support so that's another step forward along with these improvements many new devices get support and there are also numerous driver updates that bring top- notot support for many devices I personally prefer ubuntu's performance profile Ubuntu comes with a tweak kernel that aims to deliver more balanced performance Fedora because of a new release every 6 months gets optimized k drivers and packages consistently which result in very good performance all the time so overall you can expect top grade performance from U to 23.10 as well as Fedora 39 compared to something like Windows you'll be getting noticeably improved performance across a range of tasks on the same Hardware both get a point each year uben 2 has two kinds of offerings long-term support versions which have a life of five years and inim releases which are supported for only 9 months Ubuntu 23.10 is an inim release and has a very short life while technically both LTS and inm releases are UB 2 there are huge huge differences here and the target audience of these two systems is very different u 2 23.10 and Fedora 39 have both been released in October of 2023 and will be supported for the next 9 and 13 months respectively so there's a very similar life expectancy here and you'll get to use both these systems for roughly the same time before you need to update your systems both the systems even when they have short life cycles are nevertheless created with top quality standards as both these systems will be used by professionals across the globe yeah Fedora and Ubuntu are two of the top choices of software professionals this demands that both of these be high quality products and that's exactly what they are both the systems are very well tested and give you the perfect balance of cutting its technology and reliability sure they both might not be as stable as say Debian or red entreprise Linux but the trade-off is that you'll have to use considerably old versions of software on Debian or Reddit hat with uben 2 23.10 and fedro 39 you'll not have to use half a decade old software the newest Technologies the latest software and advancements are brought to you but in a well tested manner this actually makes both these systems just great for majority of Linux enthusias I mean that's why you're here to get your hands on the exciting technology but on a reliable plate and that's what you get here and talking about the usability both are very easy to use even by someone who's new to Linux navigating getting out the system is is very simple here yeah it takes some time for you to get acclimated with gnome desktop and start using it efficiently I mean it has its own workflow and there is a minor learning curve here but there are no roadblocks here as I said even people who are from Windows or Mac background can start feeling comfortable here quickly both these systems are well suited for students software professionals schools and colleges libraries and even businesses all right gaming online X today is like never before today you can play thousands of top AAA games on Linux irrespective of whether they support Linux natively or not the wine proton scene has taken us there let's get into it both ubu and Fedora give us a decent selection of games to install from from their respective software stores titles like z80 alien arena super tux cart and xonotic can be installed from the software store directly here for free and they can be fun for months really the gaming section in these software stores needs exploring then with steam you can play top games like GTA V The Witcher 3 wild Hunt rocket League CS goo Dota 2 and so so many more steam has a large selection of Linux games and on top of that you can install and play Windows games using steam play here with steam Play Steam automatically installs and manages all the proton libraries needed to run Windows games and you just click on the install button and then the play button all the configuration hazle is managed by steam itself this one thing skyrocketed gaming on Linux so yeah if you're into serious gaming on Linux Steam is a must have and if you have your own game files or discs then I highly recommend that you check out bottles bottles lets you create optimized prefixes of wine proton and soda and you can play your windows games with so much ease using bottles definitely check that out and talking about the gaming performance UB 2 23.10 comes with all the graphics drivers installed out of the box Intel integrated AMD and Nvidia provided you are allowed proprietary driver installation during system installation Fedora comes with AMD and Intel integrated drivers but you'll manually need to install the Nvidia ones from the software store this has been made vastly more simple now so you can get the best possible performance on your Hardware when you are gaming gaming on Linux rocks and on both these disos Flawless so they both get app pointage in the gaming Department installing and getting started with both ubun 2 20.10 and Ferra 39 is fairly simple download the ISO from the official website flashed onto a USB stick and live boot into it and start the installation both offer very straightforward installation processes where all the options are represented in very beginner friendly ways UB 2 23.10 ships the new installer built using flutter while this is cool I did have problems using the new installer on one of my systems so if you have any problems there is an ISO which gives you the old Legacy installer you can use that as well once the installation is done both the systems lead you through a short and sweet setup process where defaults for your system are set up and you get a fresh new Linux system all in all both ubun 2 23.10 and feder 9 are very easy to install and get started with so both score point in the installation section whichever of these two you choose you don't have to be alone on this journey both Ubuntu and Fedora have massive communities that are also active and helpful there's a wealth of community created online help for both these dros any issues you might face any problems or if you need to know how to do something one Google search and you'll get up toate and beginner friendly information immediately I started my Linux Journey with Ubuntu and having a large amount of of KN how on something that's new to you can make the entire process of switching operating systems really convenient I was new to Linux with Ubuntu and I had questions lot of them it's the community written guides and answers that help me get comfortable they help me even today Ubuntu and Fedora as two of the most popular dros bring in huge benefits in this department really it's the amazing community members that make using these fantastic dros practical and easier for others every one of these volunteers are awesome both Federal and Ubuntu get a point each here I'm a guy who's been swinging from Ubuntu to Fedora and from Fedora to Ubuntu since a long time I'm one of those Eternal D Hoppers we just can't help ourselves every time we see shiny new stuff off we go UB to in lizers and Fedora have many things that are close to Common while comparing Fedora to UB 2 long-term support version is a no-brainer for me the long-term stability of UB 2 really makes me comfortable for me UB 2 LTS wins but UB 2 23 point is not an LTS rather it's an inm release when I compare inm releases of UB to Fedora for me Fedora starts coming off as more bank for b ubun 2 might have two versions but for Fedora this is it I found Fedora to be more polished than ubun 2 in releases many of times with Fedora everything just works I'm not saying Ubuntu in releasers don't get attention they do and they are production quality software but I prefer Fedora and Fedora has mastered the art of delivering on this short life cycle every version of Fedora can be used for a year without having to update or do any kind of housekeeping and after a year I firmly believe that an update is needed to catch up on the latest advancements in Tech but I find updating more frequently than once a year to be a hazle at times it's just me Ubuntu in are also sometimes used as testing grounds for new features and technologies that may or may not end up being implemented in the long-term support versions Fedora on the other hand goes a very conservative way when making any changes this ensures that I don't have to relearn things every time Fedora updates so yeah there are many personal preferences that drive me towards Fedora so my personal point today goes to Fedora 39 and by the total tally of points the winner today is Fedora 39 now be mindful that my personal choice was the deciding factor in this battle and throughout all the categories Federal 39 and Ubuntu 23.10 have been on equal grounds it comes down to your personal choice you want stock gome or enjoy ubu's custom desktop you pref prefer snaps or flatbacks do you have an affinity to Debian base or redard family after all these preferences it's highquality Computing experience that Ubuntu and Fedora deliver they have rightfully earned the spots as the behemoths of lenux world you can download Ubuntu 23.10 and fed 39 using the links given in the description below
