all right today we are back to work on the turbo ls street truck build this is my regular cab short bed silverado we already got the engine and everything we needed out we still got some work to do in the engine bay but we're not worried about that right this second it's time to put the engine together now naturally the build plan for this started with the matte apple sloppy mechanics theme of you know maybe just the cam and springs and keep the stock bottom in and we've already got a decent base this is a lq9 so it's a six liter iron block uh but it's a gen 3 engine so it's got cathedral port heads which aren't as good as the later rec port heads and gen 3 rods which aren't as good as the later rods but this still has been proven to hold plenty of power and this engine's been in the truck for as long as i've owned it i have towed with it tons of miles i've done burnouts with it and it has been a solid ripper but i did what i always say to never do and i went down the rabbit hole with this build but it's okay because it's an ls it all started with a call to texas speed to order a cam and springs and some other little odds and ends and then i found all the other parts that they had and uh they made it too easy we're doing a fully built motor in this thing can't say i'm not excited about it or i'm mad that we went down the rabbit hole because this should be pretty rowdy we should this should be capable of easily four digit horsepower numbers when we push it that far i was gonna say if but it's a matter of when you know i'm gonna get all this stuff out of the boxes show you what we've got what's going on there and then we can start tearing that thing down getting it cleaned up getting all the new parts on so we can put it back on the truck and start building the turbo kit all right so here we have everything laid out man what a beautiful sight bunch of new baller race car parts doesn't get much better than that i'll tell you that much and this is literally every last part and piece we need that is my favorite thing about just buying stuff from texas speed is you just tell them what you have on what you're doing and they're like boom boom here you go this is every single thing you need to do it there's no guesswork there's no oh man i forgot this one part it's going to delay me a week like they literally build engines and they make so much of this stuff in-house and they carry all this stuff in-house so you literally just tell them what you're doing they send you an invoice with everything you need it's like it's like the easy button man i couldn't go back to like sorts in each different part from different websites because these people don't have it and these people do and i'm waiting it's sick so shout out to texas speed they uh they make build analysis easy so we got our normal parts and pieces like gaskets push rods lifters things like that but what we're really here for is we've got their drop-in forged rods and pistons combo so this is literally a drop-in setup designed for the 6-liter lq-9 makes it cake makes it easy so boom forged texas speed rods and some beautiful flat top forged pistons man i we're definitely gonna have to upgrade the looks of the truck once we get it together with this engine because it's a it's a little undeserving of this nice of a piece at the moment but who doesn't love a little bit of an ugly duckling for a while uh and then the crown jewel here we have their prc stage 2.5 cnc machine cylinder heads we got them completely assembled so it just takes it's going to save us a lot of time i'm having to do all the valve springs and the valve seals i've done it it's it's not too bad but when you can get the whole thing built by them it's hard to say no so these are sick these are the nicest heads i've ever put on an ls treating the old turbo truck right you know she's uh she's earned it she's putting a lot of years of uh service in duty so again all the parts and pieces we need to go on the engine but first we've got to get this whole thing stripped down and cleaned up so we can put all the shiny new parts on it so anyway enough jibber-jabber let's get to work let's start putting this thing together well stripping it apart and putting it together getting ahead of myself i'm just too excited [Music] so [Music] [Music] all right messy job all right we got this thing stripped down to a bear block well with the crank still in it though still need to strip the rear main plate off change the dumbbell but for the most part we got this thing all the way stripped down we got all the parts up here uh one of the beauties of ls is they just come apart and go together so easy they're just they're well thought out engine gm had a lot of years to refine the whole pushrod v8 kind of deal i just like working on them it's like likos it's literally the best uh analogy for it so anyway we got this thing stripped down naturally the next step would be to take it to the machine shop however all the machine shops that i can find are super backed up it's been like this since this whole thing started i took a set of heads that were supposed to be done in two weeks and it took two and a half months so it's just a risk i don't want to take because at the bare minimum they said a month and a half we know it's gonna be longer than that we're gonna skip the machine shop we're gonna do it ourselves just to save time i've got all the parts for this truck man everything aside from the transit converter right now i want to get this thing together and start ripping it so what we're going to do since the texas speed piston rod combo is a drop in setup we don't need to board over we're not stroking it we're not doing anything crazy we're literally just replacing the pistons and rods with upgraded units so we're going to do a simple three stone hone on the cylinder walls they've got good cross hatching steel but when you do new rings you generally want to just do a quick home job just to make sure that they seat well clean up all the mating surfaces really well especially the head gaskets and then really the big thing is just taking our time on doing the piston ring gap getting all that set up and plasti gauging the bearings checking all the bearing tolerances torquing everything down correctly that's really gonna be to make it or break it for us in my opinion done a lot of engines like this granted never tried to make four digit horsepower on an engine that i put together like this but uh there's only one way to find out if it works try it so that being said the next step is going to be to very thoroughly clean this block up do the home job go through clean all the gasket surfaces we got we got a lot of cleaning to do so i'm going to go jibber-jabber in about it we're going to get to it [Music] [Music] beautiful the worst part about doing the at-home home job is just cleaning the cylinders out after because you obviously don't want there to be a speck of dirt left in there so you go through so many paper towels you basically clean until the paper towel doesn't get dirty anymore all right we got all of our cylinders honed up got a nice cross hatching going on and all of them so with that the block work is essentially done we'll have to clean it out and do some other little odds and ends but now we move into the tedious step of gapping the rings so we basically have to put each ring in its respective cylinder measure the end gap grind it down with this piston ring grinder if we have to to get our desired ring gap and do that two rings per cylinder eight cylinders so it is a tedious and time consuming process but this is kind of one of those make it or break it steps especially on a turbo car you have to have the right ring gap if your ring gap is too tight the rings can butt up against each other and then break the ring lands off the top of the piston which we really obviously do not want that so this is one of those things man you get impatient here you can ruin all the other hard work so it's time to dive in get back to work [Music] so i generally take the piston push them down to about where they would be and try to just make sure they're leveled out obviously if they're angled it's going to change the gap so just make sure we're good oh geez that is tight so we got some serious grinding to do they're not even they're literally overlapping right now all right let's hit the grinding wheel all right better but we're still overlapping all right there we go 26 thousandths top ring now when you do the bottom ring and then do it for the rest of the seven cylinders i'll be here for a while so i'm gonna put some music on and get to jamming well i ended up making a little uh slight modification to the piston ring filer of course i did it for like the last two cylinders so i just got tired of hand cranking it but we have all of our rings gapped they're all labeled check marked so we know which ones were gapped and we're not gapped 0.26 on the top ring 0.28 on the bottom ring nice kind of conservative big enough to where we should be good uh but not so big that we're gonna have crazy blow by so before we start putting all of the rings on the pistons we need to go ahead and assemble the piston and rod combo that way once the rings are on we can boom pluck them in the block and then check our bearing clearances we're good to go then we'll cinch them all down and move on to the next step all right we've got all of our pistons and rods assembled went ahead and labeled them front and rear because we got to make sure the orientation is correct went ahead and got the oil scrubber rings on those are already clocked got the rod caps split apart so once we get the rings on we toss the bearings in and then we'll be ready to drop them in the hole this is definitely a tool you want to have if you are installing piston rings you know what let's make this easier on ourselves here [Music] all right our pistons and rods are completely assembled ready to go got the rings on the ring set got our new rod bearings in we are ready to drop these in i did one final clean of the cylinder bores just to make sure that was all good now we're just gonna start tossing them in so i bought this four inch ring compressor so this is basically just machined tapered down to four inch so these only work per bore size so like this is one for when i built my five three now i think these are worth the money they're like 30 40 bucks and you think about how much money you're spending on the rest of the engine components it's worth it to make your life easier this is like the traditional style so you twist that it tightens up to the right bore size but these are so dinky i hate them uh you end up getting super oily and then these pieces where they overlap can slip apart and the ring can pop out and break off it's i'm not a fan of these i mean definitely use it if i have to but it's just to me it's worth it to just spend the money and buy one of these now that being said a little concerned about this one i bought it was just the only one i could get quickly so this is my 5 3 aluminum block you can see how this kind of sits down in there it's got this little tiny edge on it to center it this one has an edge too but it's a lot thicker and it's too big it does not sit down on the board so we're going to have to try to keep this centered by ourselves which kind of defeats a lot of the purpose of buying one of these but we'll see how it goes we'll give it a shot so anyway enough jibber-jabber what's uh the final step of our piston and rod install which is installing them in the block all right well it still worked fine i was a little nervous about that [Music] all right got it all buttoned up rotating assembly is officially complete everything's torqued man i was a little concerned about torquing these to 80 foot pounds that's what they call for these are the even better l19 bolts that's what the texas speed rods come with i mean there's some beefy units but still that's a lot uh for a rod bolt at least but they took it no problem didn't feel sketchy at all so anyway i love looking down in the bottom of an engine with forge rods and pistons especially fresh ones ah it just looks so cool it's so unassuming from the outside you know it's one of those things uh but anyway let me flip it over and put some lube on this thing it was just oh now it's butter dude that freaking pv silicone give her a little twist here turns over nice and clean put cylinder one up at top dead center notch it back a touch boom so now we're pretty well ready to throw the cam in throw the lifters in and do the rest we still got a decent bit to do we need to shim the oil pump uh we've got to modify the rocker arms for the trunnion upgrade heads on manifold we got to modify the oil pan get that on i want to finish this thing up completely as a completely dressed engine with manifolds and everything it's going to be pretty satisfying to look at when it's all done and dusted but uh one i am out of assemblywood i've got like a tiny bit left not enough to do the cam so i need to run to the store and get that and a couple other things so i think we're gonna go ahead and call it here i was hoping to get the whole thing done but one of those things man it's always it always takes longer than you think even when you've done it before there's just some of the stuff so tedious like gap in the rings and whatever so i'm happy with the progress uh we'll get this thing buttoned up next episode and then we'll be ready to drop back in the truck so i hope to see you guys for that but for now that's going to wrap us up thanks for watching thanks for subscribing goodbye oh also last thing jibber jabber shirts back in stock uh we pretty much ran out real quick you guys are awesome they went a lot faster than i expected i thought i ordered plenty didn't order plenty so restock them and we have the garage boat pocket tees these are pocket tees we've got pretty much everything else in stock so now we're just back the the these guys are all gone so if you want one of these if you didn't go on the first time around there in stock garage will dot com merch orders help support the channel and uh benny boyle ships them out so uh you're supporting uh two people's drift life at one time so okay for real with this time thanks for watching goodbye
