(classical music) - I think you just have to
surrender to the sandwich. I surrender to you. Hello and welcome to
my first video of 2021. I'm starting with something
that I think a lot of us may have recently experienced. We're talking about
hangover cures. (laughs) We are going to look at dishes
from Mongolia, Sri Lanka, Mexico, Ireland and Cypress. I know that a lot of
people practice dry January but you know what? You can keep these in your back pocket for when February comes
around again. (laughs) (lighthearted music) - Hi my name is Tahiri
and I live in Sri Lanka. So Sri Lanka, this is
what usually happens. People will go out. The most common night out
drink would be Allecan beer. Maybe they'll hit the counter
they'll do their thing, they'll dance, they'll
drink a little, drink a lot. Then around two or three, they will go to shop and
they will order Kothu. So Kothu is chopped up
protein mixed with spices and vegetable and it usually has a gravy that kind a gets soaked
into the roti itself. So it's very flavorful. You could have meat in your Kothu. You could any, you could
have cheese in your Kothu. What makes a Kothu, is the roti, if the roti didn't exist in the Kothu then it's not a Kothu roti. - Oh no! No! - What? - We're out! - Of gas? - Yes. (metal clangs) - Kothu tastes like a good day. Like, you know, if you're having Kothu, your day could have been all that bad. Because it's just something
that makes people happy. But it is also soft but it has a bite. You can find Kothu all over Sri Lanka and I think it's a dish that
really represents Sri Lankan people because it's a calama
ad calama means mixed. And that's kinda of what Sri Lanka is , its a mix of different types of cultures, people, ideologies and that's exactly what Kothu is, it's a calama. Do you think most people will
like this if they tried it? Yes. There's a Kothu out there for you, you just haven't tasted it yet. (classical music) - Okay, the whole house
smells like spices. My eyes were like watering
while I was cooking this. It's a bold hangover smell, you know, if you're feeling rough. Oh, this good. It's spicy. It's really spicy. (laughs) Oh, I got the roti in that one. You have like the crunchy vegetables and then you have, like,
the soft bread in there and the bread has just soaked up all of the spices and so it's very flavorful. Like, my whole mouth is tingling. And that is definitely
from the chili powder but also because it tastes
really good. (laughs) You know there's two types of hangovers. There is like that stomach hangover where you're just like,
everything is gross. Or the head hangover,
when you have a headache. Stomach hangover, I don't know. Head hangover, I think
this would actually work to get rid of it. (classical music) Messy. You may have noticed that pretty soon after I started cooking, I had to switch from a wok to my Instapot. That's because number one, my building has no gas right now. And number two, my stove top cooker that runs on tiny gas canisters ran out. We pivoted. (laughs) (grunts) The more I eat this, the
less spicy I think it is and the more I like it actually. Maybe was just that initial first bite where my taste buds were not
primed for the chili powder. I would have added more bread. Last bite. That was delicious. Something that I definitely
never would have made had it not been for this show and so that makes it double cool. Double cool? Doubly as cool? Twice as cool, I'm gonna go. (classical music) Double cool, I don't
feel like that's a thing. (classical music) - Hi, my name is Khulan, I am from Ulaannbaatar, Monngolia. And I'm going to explain our most common hangover dish named bantan. Our favorite alcohol is beer, and in the countryside you will find mainly fermented mare's milk. It's called airag. Mostly there's like two kinds of people: instant ramen in the morning
or bantan in the morning. That's two main dishes
for hangover for us. It's made of flour, mutton, salt and some onions. Bantan, if you translate it, it means mix up, mixture
or something mushy. So you can imagine what
it would look like. This dish taste mainly kind of salty, and very fresh and very
nurturing because it's soup. It acts also as a baby food. And I would say most people like it. 'cause this is a real
representation of our cuisine 'cause there are not that many
traditional Mongolian dishes in our culture but it's
really one of them. - This intimidated me to make but I think that it turned out quite well. I can't believe that I made a
stock with bones. (chuckles) Oh my God. This is incredible. The flavor is very rich but rich in like, a very comforting way
and the little pieces of meat are nice but the the
part that is so good is that... When I was crumbling
the flour and the water and making those kind
of little tiny granules. It's like a porridge but
each of these little granules has cooked and almost feels like hundreds of tiny little dumplings in your mouth. It is really nice and the green onion adds this video really, really
welcoming pop a freshness because the dish itself doesn't
really have much going on. It's all this flavor and
essence from the meat. So combining it with the
green onion just gives this like big pop of like ooh! When I was shopping. I
really could not find mutton. it's not the most common
meat to eat in the US. So I substituted it with
beef, a very common meat, to eat in the US. So obviously the flavors
gonna be shifted slightly. But I think mostly what
this is about is also about the consistency of the porridge and I definitely think
I nailed that, honestly. As far as a hangover dish goes, I 100% get that as well. It'll coat your whole
stomach but give you protein and give you carbs to kind
of push through the day and it is just warm and comforting. I've never attempted to cook
Mongolian Cuisine before so this was a really incredible experience and honestly I just feel like I'm getting so many cool opportunities in
doing this YouTube channel. I'm trying things that
I don't know how else I would have tried them and it's awesome. (classical music) Hola, My name is Leonor, I live in Guadalajara, Mexico. The morning after a good party, we usually look for spicy foods. But here in Guadalajara it's really common to look for tortas ahogadas. It's a typical dish of the
city and they are everywhere. The torta ahogada has a bun
that is named (speaks Spanish) It's really hard on the crust
but really soft in the inside. This bun is filled with pork caritas. That's the traditional way
of doing the torta ahogada. But I am vegan so I replace
the for pork carnitas with oyster mushrooms or soy. This bun is filled with refried beans. The whole torta is covered with a sauce that is made with tomato, garlic, salt, oregano, and vinegar. Then you can top the torta
with marinated onions, lemon juice and I a really
important ingredient is the hot sauce that is
made with chili di arbol. Eating the torta ahogada
can get really messy, but it is worth it. The combination of the
flavors, it's really perfect. - I don't even know if
I know how to eat this. It's gonna be so messy. I need a napkin. Okay, we're gonna go with a bib. This is a look. Actually, can't see 'cause
I don't have a view finder but imagine it's a look. (lighthearted music) Oh my God, I made this. I was so intimidated by this recipe. I put off making it for days. I just thought there's no way
I'll be able to make carintas, there's now way I'll be
able to make the sauce. Sometimes you just get
in your head, you know and I had to do it and it's so good. (exclaims) Is there a right way to eat this? I think you just have to
surrender to the sandwich. I surrender to you. There's so much happening in the sandwich. You have the savory from the refried beans and all of the spices in the pork and then a lot of
tangy-ness from the vinegar and the pickled onions
and then the tomato sauce and then you got the hot
sauce which gives you a kick and the bread is crunchy but
at the same time it's soft. (exclaims) This whole sandwiches like an experience. As far as the hangover
food goes, heck yeah. Cooking all these dishes, I would definitely say I
think I would prefer somebody to make them for me if I was hungover then to have to make them myself but that wasn't my ask, you know, my ask wasn't what do
you make for yourself 'cause I imagine the answer would just be like a grilled cheese and
like whatever happening bag of chips you can find
the back of your cabinet. My mouth is a little on fire. I'm trying to cool down. Don't let them see you sweat. Well, that went down quick. I think I only spilled
a little bit but maybe it's just all over my face
and if it is so be it. (classical music) - So hi everybody, my name is Aine and I live in
Belfast in Northern Ireland. The most common hangover dish
here would be the Ulster fry. And basically, what
this is is a combination of full English and full Irish breakfast. And it's usually something
after a big big night out, a big log sesh, that
everybody craves first thing when they get up when
they're done dry heaving, getting a glass of water... The soda bread definitely sets it apart and also with the potato faris or potato bread as we call it. Yes you can go out and get one, you can pay for it,
whatever floats your boat but you can't beat a
homemade fry, in my opinion. You wake up and smell is
just all over the house. It's actually fantastic to wake up to. and everybody, I'd say,
in the North of Ireland or Northern Ireland has
definitely tried a fry because it's just so good. Like oh my God, it's iconic here, you know what I mean? Basically, just because we live in Ulster and Northern Ireland it's
called an Ulster fry. Basically the dish consists
of bacon, fried egg, black pudding and white pudding very good. And soda bread, potato farl. My mother said to me, "It's important that you
say it's the potato farl," because it's apparently
it's most important part. Debatable, but anyway. Fried mushrooms, fried tomato, pancake. My sister always says, "It's not fry without a pancake." True, beans. - Hi I just need to pop in and say that I forgot to do the
pancake and the beans. I don't know, there was so many things. I must have just... I feel really bad. I feel really bad but I did
want to scrap the whole thing just because I was silly
and forgot to add an element to dish was still amazing. I mean you'll see, I tried it later on. I just... (exclaims) (laughs) Okay well, sorry. - And usually to top it all off, a big mug of tea. Like I'm gonna have right now. Bundoran mug! So basically, what it
taste like is very salty. Does it cure a hangover? In my own experience with a hangover, yes it does. It just brings you back to life. (sighs) I don't think I've ever worked so hard to make breakfast in my entire life. It's a big complete and
over the top breakfast with a million additions. I think the idea with like
a greasy breakfast is... Uh huh. Hmm, I love roasted tomatoes. Roasted mushroom. I'm most curious about the soda bread. It's actually pretty good. Blood sausage. Oh that was so good. Potato faris. That's cool when I was cooking them you could see them like puffing up. I thought that was really funky. I've never done this with mashed potatoes that made them into a dough, I guess? I do love bacon and I never eat it. I feel like everything
I make is a huge bite. You know when you like take a big bite and then you like run out of
breath while you're chewing, you know like out of breath
from I'm eating. (sighs) That just happened. 10 out of 10 for deliciousness and I definitely think
this is what you want after a big night out but
don't make it at home. Or if you do have it at home, have somebody who is not
hungover make it for you. (chuckles) (classical music) My name is Parscan. I am from Famagusta in Cyprus. Cypress is the third biggest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Bidda Badadez is a sandwich dish that has thick fried potatoes grilled halloumi and fresh
slices of tomatoes and cucumber also little bit of garnish and cilantro. Bidda comes from the pizza
bread that we use in the dish and badadez is just what we
call potatoes in Cypress. This dish is amazing for the hangovers because it has a lot of carbs in it. Also, its' a great
alternative for vegetarians. People usually eat these
after hangover is caused by raki or ouzo which are the most popular drinks in Cypress. I think I think this dish
is absolutely comforting and absolutely delicious. - Fast food sandwich from
Cypress, made at home. Oopsies. Okay, in general, I think that vegetarian
sandwiches can get a bad rap 'cause people are like,
"hey where's the meat." You don't need the meat in this. I did see online that there are options where you can put cofte in it but halloumi is quite possibly
the most perfect cheese. It is so salty and I
love how rubbery it is and it's just like, that you can grill it and it's warm and it's not melt-y. It's hmm. Everything combines together. It is a crunchy and warm sandwich. The french fries are warm
and the halloumi is warm and then you have the cold
cucumber and the cold tomato. Wow, this is good. I have a joke that my
sisters friend made up. What type of cheese looks in
the mirror and loves itself? Halloumi. I don't know if any of you
got it or laughed or liked it. I'm gonna just assume you all thought it was as awesome as I think it is. I do have another cheese joke. What type of cheese can
calm Alaskan wildlife? Camembert. Just gonna going to let that one sit. It's 2021 and I'm very
excited to see what I can do with this channel. I have a bunch of ideas. I'm going to start a Patreon
and the people who join there are gonna get a
little creative control to work with me to come up with ideas or be videos or I don't know. We can do what we want. It's you know, it's our own forum. Anyway with that, I will see you all in the next video. Oh my god. No! These burnt. (growls)
