Trusting God In the Highs and Lows — VOUS CREW Live

[Music] [Applause] hey guys welcome to crew live we are so happy that you're here with us i'm so excited for us to get into this conversation uh here but hey if you're wondering what a crew is crews are the small group of our church hey right now as a church we're journeying through the book of mark and pastor rich this past weekend preached on a sermon called highs and lows um and so hey i'm here with some amazing people and we're gonna get into this conversation i'm so pumped for us to get into it but we never started crew without an icebreaker so being that the sermon title was highs and lows i want to know your name and mate give us like a high and a low for this past week caleb why don't you kick us off yeah so my name's caleb uh i guess a high for this week would be being able to be here with you guys no seriously it's awesome he's been able to engage and talk about god's word uh and as low as i'm bouncing back from an injury so it's kind of got another month ahead of me of just rehab rehab yeah that's not fun yeah hey guys my name's celine um a high would probably be that my visa is on its way and my low is that i got sick oh i got a cold it's not corona so i'm good but i got sick that's great celine um my name is michelle and my high for the week is that i have a job interview coming up this week let's go scott is good i'm really excited about that and my low would be that i haven't been prioritizing my sleep and i'm the person i'm like a baby i need eight to ten hours of sleep and if i don't have that i'm very cranky so um so excuse me if i'm cranky i have not been privatizing this all right my name is bijan and i would say that my high has to be probably this last sunday i brought some people who are local who haven't been a church for a long time and we had the opportunity to worship together up here up front and p rich gave one of our guys a little shout out and that really uh that made his day i gotta make sure to venmo rich 20 bucks my low man i'm ashamed to admit it but i ran out of gas on the highway no way how did like what happened how did you get i just had a homie pick me up and i had them take care of it came and rescued me that's great that's great that's great well my name is jamila also known as jam um i would say my high would be from yesterday someone pretty much spoke life over me and they were reminding me that um to not stop dancing so and that my dancing that so many people are going to find freedom in my dancing and that people get to know jesus because of my dancing and i was like i was thinking about that i need to get back to dancing so that really encouraged me and i would say my low is that recently a friend um told me that they could no longer be my friend at least in this season and that kind of hurt me and i wasn't expecting it but i know i'm just trusting god through that and knowing that you know whatever happens to this that is going to be a good thing yeah that's right love that thank you for sharing that jim always love your your vulnerability um i love your dance moves so you got some yeah you know yeah um hi for me i had my pops in town uh this past week and man over the last six months or so he's he's spent almost four entire weeks with me so yeah so that's that's been fun a low i often comes when you're hosting people i didn't make it to all my training sessions so i got a lot of i got a lot of makeup work to do but i'm so excited well i'm looking forward for us to get into this uh conversation jam why don't you take us through um some summary of it all yeah this message was incredible i was weeping i was like saying pastor richie was coming for me but it was just i just love this message highs and lows and there are so many things that i can take away from this message but one thing that really stood out to me was when pastor rich he said your public life will never add up to an empty private life and i was like yes if you felt that just snap yeah snap in the chat throw some emojis in the chat like 100 claps and i was just like wow that's so true like i love that he was saying that being around god isn't the same as being intimate yeah right and i was like man sometimes like especially being in ministry we can get so consumed with doing the work and doing working on things that we think that we are spending time with god but we're not having an intimacy with god and that really challenged me that you know what i really want to take time to just get alone with god and spend time with him and just be more intimate and more intentional with him it's so good yeah and kind of going off of that i think uh the thing that stood out to me that pastor said was the best thing that you can do for jesus is simply be with him which is so good just talked about like i love the fact that he said we're not human doings we're human beings yeah yeah and not really like you're like when you think it's like we say that word all the time but it doesn't really hit us and so when he said that i was like oh he's coming for me so that was really to just be with him it's not it's not even just like in the silence but it's so hard because we're so wired to constantly doing and doing and doing that we don't feel that we've done enough or that we are enough but he just wants us to be it's simple but also very difficult right yeah and i think going just the idea of being with jesus right spending time with him uh pastor rich was closing out and he mentioned elijah and how god took him to the mountains just so he could hear the still small voice and identify that alone time as hearing from god wow um and so i think a lot of times in my own life i forget so it was really challenging when he was bringing this up because i forget that to hear from him to hear that small voice is just right being alone with him right yeah being with him it's good that's good so true well if you are watching right now you can follow along you can go to vuechurch.com crew and we're going to dive right into our discussion and we've been studying as a church the book of mark and on sunday pastor rich he preached from mark 9 and verses 2 through 4 and so i'm going to read the scripture it says after six days jesus took peter james and john with him and led them up a high mountain where they were all alone there he was transfigured before them his clothes became dazzling white whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them and there appeared before them elijah and moses who were talking with jesus peter said to jesus rabbi is it good for us to be here let us put up three shelters one for you one for moses and one for elijah he did not know what to say they were so frightened i just love that then a cloud appeared and enveloped them and a voice came from the cloud this is my son whom i love listen to him suddenly we read all throughout mark that there's always this word suddenly when they looked around they no longer saw anyone with them except jesus how about you just type in the chat except jesus jesus that's right so let's apply this now this takes us into the main idea of our discussion highs and lows are what make life life right now there are couples being wed kids graduating from high school and babies learning to walk for the first time there are many that are experiencing the mountain tops of life and at the same time there is still an immeasurable amount of hunger strife and violence prevalent all over this world i think if you turn on the tv today you'll probably see something yeah pretty tragic right there's a lot going on out there yeah most of us realize that although life is beautiful things won't always work out the way we wish although sometimes we can't help but experience this appointment jesus knows the full picture jesus was always aware that there was a bigger battle a larger narrative at hand for which he was ready to sacrifice everything yeah life every single life was at stake in his choice of the cross so what did jesus do he gave his inner circle a deeper revelation of his glory through his transfiguration a teachable moment a signal saying death will not win let's go maybe you can relate to facing letdowns with your career with others and even with where your life has you now know that all of your disappointments do not compare to god's plan for your life amen amen all the law and the prophets testify to the enduring strength of the word of god as it did then so let it be in your life today so we like to say unmet expectations are opportunities for divine revelations and i always tell people this let your heart break let it break let those cracks open up and let god's word seep in it's great it is a platform for his work it's great it's beautiful that's beautiful i love that so much and this really takes us into our first point of discussion today so please if you're watching at home read along with us and the first point that we're talking about today is this idea of transfiguration and it's it's such a beautiful thing i'm going to read a little bit more about it but i think as humans our minds can't even comprehend this idea of transfiguration of really getting to see jesus show us his glory but three of his disciples got to watch this in real life and i just can't even imagine how amazing that must have been so transfiguration it was fitting that atop a mountain peak jesus gave his inner circle a glimpse of glory while at that moment in time jesus held the most acclaim in his ministry he revealed to three chosen disciples that his purpose was not popularity but instead to fulfill all the promises of god's word in dazzling brilliance type that in the chat dazzling jesus transformed in front of those closest to him to reveal his divine nature he removed the cloak of his humanity and gives the disciples an opportunity to witness his glory splendor and majesty we can see god through jesus being around god is not the same as being alone with god right this glory was not the reflection of outward light it was the radiance and revelation of inward light and our first question for today i'm really excited to hear your answers for this one is what has god revealed to you in your lowest moments i would say for me is just the reminder of being still and know that he is lord and that he is god and um i think when we're in our lowest moments it's easy for us to forget who he is and what he has done that we're just thinking about what we're seeing right now what we're in right now you know we're seeing things through our natural lenses instead of viewing things through our supernatural lenses and so i think for me it's like whenever i'm in my lowest moments i just always have this revelation from the lord like hey jamila be still come on like i have everything under control like right now you're in your lowest moments but this is for an opportunity for me to take you higher yeah and so that's something that the lord has revealed to me in my lowest moment beautiful yeah i think for me um there are certain seasons um that god will often put you in obscurity in order to develop your security and what i mean by that that was really really the definition of that means to conceal or to hide and when i think about that you know treasure is something that is his hidden so often times we get really frustrated because we feel hidden but you don't know that your treasure wow and what you have inside of you is treasure and so i have to remember god is constantly trying to remind myself and i'm trying to constantly be around people to speak into the fact that i'm not being concealed out of punishment i'm being concealed out of preparation because god will never promote something that's not first prepared so i'm in this season of preparing and i'm like wow god it's really quiet yeah it's really and it's like good because i need you to hear from me exactly that is and so it's you know just i always find myself going you know i'm not doing a lot that's why that message from past rich on sunday really just hit me because i just feel like i'm not doing anything yeah and god's like no no you're right where you need to be because you're just being yeah and so i think that's one of the lessons is that oftentimes obscurity he uses those seasons not always to develop your security and who he is and who he's created you to be amen it's powerful that's great that's great that's really good you know in in my lowest moments but i find that god is showing me hey you josh you can only see in part i see in full and in my lowest moments i'm reminded i think you said god's reminding you like god is reminding you all throughout the bible we see these traditions put in place so that we would not forget the goodness of god the sovereignty of god um and so i think in my lowest moments i'm being reminded of how good god is and reminded that i need to trust in him amen right and so and so often i'm reminded like how good god was before he's still good now he's continued to be good though i may not see it right though it may not make sense right now and nine to 10 times i don't even want to be here correct right if i'm being honest right and but then out of those moments our intimacy becomes closer because when your life is on the line when everything is on the line like it's real yeah you know you don't play about your faith when your life is on the line and then it's i'm reminded of hey god you've been good dan you're still good now there's so much more in store yeah like what i have now right was my so much more before come on right right and so often god wants to bring us somewhere we can't even fathom right and so just just trust me i'm going to take you somewhere beautiful and i'm working this out so i think in those times in my lowest moments i'm learning to trust in him and god is reminding me i've been good before i'm good now i'm going to i'm still good amen that's great so something that we we've done together in our vu care classes we actually have one called free to grow we write a letter to jesus right and one thing upon reflecting before writing this letter i thought about what you were saying how man if i go back and i look at the highest highs of my life and i trace them they all had one thing in common and that was that right before those moments was a very low moment yeah yeah so having this revelation like we're talking about here today i i prayed a very bold prayer in this letter and i said jesus break me break my heart put me through a storm but only if you believe i'm ready ready for it right because i know that if a storm is coming if i'm going through a low moment if i'm in the valley i have been shown time and time again that the highest moments of my life have been on the other side of the right so it's like actually the most selfish prayer i can have it's like so bold to say hey send me through the valley because i can't wait to get to the mountaintop that follows right so it's like i was saying earlier in our main ideas like yo let your heart break yeah like submit yourself to that process yeah i love i leave love that analogy right there is like an art form i believe i'm gonna pronounce it correctly but i believe it's called kinstugi and the art form i think it's japanese right i think and the the the pattern of this art is it takes broken things and it mends them with gold yeah and so you'll see like my brother has like a heart and it's been shattered but then you see this gold uh like like soldering all throughout the heart how it's been put back together and the idea that it's more beautiful now than it was before because it was broken uh but it was put together by gentle intentional hands with the most precious material with purpose and now it stands to say that you can't overcome yeah there is hope you can make the other side and so that's what i think about when i need a big one of those like a big face right here yeah 24k that's incredible that's incredible i think for me what god has revealed to me um just in a recent season in my lowest moments is really to i know we keep saying this idea of relying on him but really relying on him and learning to rely on the holy spirit like there are certain times in your life where you can sit here and you can you can read scripture or you can worship it out or scream it out but sometimes you just have to turn on this switch and just invite the holy spirit in there was a time when i remember i was just like laying my bed i was going through a really difficult time and i was just like overcome with um just crippling anxiety my heart's just racing and i felt like i couldn't even sleep because my heart was just pounding and i'm like no i know what would i what i've experienced in my highs and i'm going to put it into practice right now during my low so i was just in my quiet time with the lord inviting him and just holy spirit i need you right now i need you to comfort me i need you to counsel me and i'm not kidding you within seconds my heart just started lowering and i was able to just just be still like jim was saying just be still in his presence as i'm learning to to really rely on the holy spirit to comfort us that's something that during our lowest moments that we really have access to the comfort of the holy spirit obviously the highs and the mountaintops are amazing but there's nothing like the comfort of jesus in your heart um and just bringing it back to to what we said earlier in our icebreakers with these highs and the lows i'd love to hear how you guys are submitting your highs and your lows to god today yeah well from for me i think it's easy to submit my lows to god if i'm being completely honest like i think when it's like when you're in trouble like you know where to go like when things are going wrong like you know where to go like someone broke in your house you want to call the cops like something's wrong with like your injury i'm calling a doctor like my life is falling apart i know i need to go to god right i think it's for me when i'm in a season of a high it's remembering that the god of my lows and the in-betweens is the same god that masterminded my highs yeah and so all glory to god solely dale gloria for where i'm at all glory to god in my eyes all glory to god in the middle east all glory to god in the low right because he is the lord of my life he's driving this ship and so for me it's uh keeping a community around me and making sure that i'm saying i'm staying humble i'm staying accountable in those highs like hey god put me here and as fast as he put me here he can move me right here right so i want to be like so i'm so grateful to be here god for as long as you have me here i want to honor you in this high and um i find in those moments when i forget that it is god is the reason why i am who and where i am right that's when he's alright we're gonna go we're gonna take a little journey back down this mountain real quick so i'll give you a little quick reminder and then we'll come right back so i think it's when i'm not in the low to remember it is still for the glory of god amen i love that i would say the same like i think that it's probably easier for us to submit our highs just because it's like we're in desperation i mean sorry i lost because we're in desperation like it's like okay lord i need you but i will say i i will say submit both my high and my low with my high and just being reminded that hey my dancing is not for me but it's actually for the glory of god like i have to constantly remind myself i'm going to submit that to you lord because what i'm doing you're using me as your vessel you're using it as your vessel to bring those that are far from you close to you but then also my low it's a low and it hurts but i know that it's not even going to be something that how can i say like that i'm just hurting for so long that i know that what's meant to harm us god is going to turn in yeah you know like in romans it says all things work for the good for those who love him and so i have to just constantly know that i have to submit that to god like i can't just handle that situation and try to take control because honestly i wanted to i don't want to send a message like what do you mean but then the next day i was like you know what i had peace with and i was like you know this is this is part of the journey that i'm on like god he's alpha he's omega he's beginning he's the end and he knows what he has for me and whatever happens next with this friendship like i know that he's he has total control over it and all i have to do is just submit it to him right that's right i love what you're saying there jan because right before um our message on sunday as we know we have our huddle and uh shout out to jeff he just gave such a beautiful so good yeah it was uh so really just reminding us that jesus is our message jesus is the message so when we talk about highs and lows i definitely want to speak to you caleb here because you're going through injuries and i've gone through injuries as well and if anyone who knows me you know i love to be in the gym i love to play sports basketball now i'm roped into this pickleball league it's not even a real sport whatever so every time that i've been injured i've been so spiritually debilitated and yeah yeah and like to the point of tears like i don't really cry that often out of sadness because not many things like like you said we'll just submit it to god and we'll get through that but when it comes to injury man that really is the surest way to to break me down and i just understood i remember what jeff said it's like yeah but are you identifying with those things are you identifying with your athleticism or your desire to play sports or train or be physical like no take your focus off those things and place them back on me so that was actually how i overcame injury it's like just embrace that god this isn't a coincidence that it's one injury after another or whatever it is one thing after another where's your focus that was a really valuable life lesson that i think even today i want to remind myself just because you're at the high don't forget that at the low jesus revealed to you that he's the message he's where your identity needs to be placed yeah so embrace it right embrace that injury but understand that there's a purpose behind it that's great i appreciate that bro that's like a really great reminder and it's also a great point because we're about to roll into our next point which is only jesus somebody throw that in the chat only only jesus jesus come on so point number two after the disciples were surrounded by the cloud only jesus is standing there because everything we are looking for is simply found in him he's all we need he is glowing because he is the very glory of god god's affirmation of his son jesus has never changed the best thing you can do for jesus is simply be with jesus celine's already reminded us of that which is great in your highs and in your lows you just need jesus when everyone else leaves that's powerful yeah when everyone else leaves it's jesus who remains amen god says this is my son whom i love listen to him so the question to go with only jesus is what distracts you from listening to and affirming god's voice myself honestly um i think we can be our biggest distraction we can be our biggest enemy that you know instead of listening to and affirming god's voice we kind of hear what we want to hear we kind of get into our heads and we um kind of believing the lies of just the outsiders instead of believing his word and what he says is true and i would say for me that kind of distracts me just like what i was saying before it's like okay we're seeing things through our natural eyes instead of the supernatural so i'm seeing things right here in front of me and it's like ugh this isn't what i thought or man i thought god said this but this is what i'm seeing yes i was even reading earlier and i even kind of posted it and you know um the scripture in jeremiah that says for i know the plans that i have for you said the lord plans to prosper you not to harm you and right before that jeremiah was prophesying and he said that it would take 70 years for them to see that but sometimes we get so focused on that verse that's a popular verse that the lord has a plan for me he's going to cross for me but then when we kind of see it not happening yet and it's like like i'm kind of feeling harm right now like i don't know we kind of forget that and that's when we get ourselves can distract us from listening to and affirming god's voice like no but he promised this and although it's not happening in the time that we're expecting it it will happen because he who promises faithful and we see it and we you know we've seen in our in times prior like with things that you're going through and it's like we just have to remind ourselves that hey like i'm going to listen to and affirm god's voice i'm not going to get ahead of myself and believe the lies that i'm telling myself yeah it's really good i would have to say myself as well right yeah but to your point like there's typically at large there's always time between the promise and then the realization of that promise it goes back since the beginning of time right i think that's why we hear the bible say it's impossible to please god without faith yep right if all you needed was faith for the next 30 minutes it'd be hard like you would you get into one love like that's it i'm out yeah yeah that's it you had promised like think about david what david had to go through you're anointing me as the king of it this guy's throwing spears at me like nah man i'm out peace i'm out and i think um one of the points was right our god will cancel our plans because his plans are better right so when i think about this question i think about the worry right oh my gosh things aren't going according to what i thought god you were going to do you know but if you would ask me two and a half years ago hey josh you're going to be out in miami here's the company you're going to be working for here's you're going to be your involvement in ministry i'd be like what company is that what church is that like like what do you mean god like that so i think god wants to do such beautiful things in our lives and with us and in us that if he tried to explain us it wouldn't make sense and so for me what i what keeps me from believing that and listening is the worry so i have to challenge myself man am i am i worrying or am i trusting yeah am i worrying my trust i got people in my life to tell me hey jp you're worrying right now dog yeah yeah relax like god got you yeah you know um so i would say worry that's so good i think along with you guys what you guys are saying just about yourself i think for me it's like myself and then my responsibilities or responsibilities sometimes that i put on myself that aren't necessarily the most important but i think just time and time again sometimes that can distract you like i can't even tell you how many times i sit down and in my morning time with god and i'm just ready i'm ready to get into his word i'm ready to get into prayer and then and then my phones there's a notification or my dog's barking or you know my mom's calling me or someone's walking into my room and i think sometimes it's it's the small things that really get to us the small things that that pile up the small distractions that before you know it hey it's been three days i haven't even talked to jesus i haven't even heard from him i haven't even spoken to him and i think that's what the enemy wants he wants to distract us sometimes it can be these major roadblocks that we can see and we're like okay this is definitely satan he's trying to distract me but i think satan is very um clever and he works in just the small moments and the small things and and before we know it we're distracted we're not spending time with god and that starts to hurt our souls and yeah it's just everything every i think everything starts to go wrong we see things from a different perspective so for me it's really just prioritizing my time alone with god and yeah i mean as we know once once you're walking in your faith with god every time could be a time with god you know you're driving your car you're showering you're doing anything but i think there's also something special about carving in this one-on-one time yeah where you put your phone to the side get out your physical bible i love the bible app but there's nothing like a physical bible and really just diving into that and praying maybe put some worship music on in the back and putting those distractions away like god is number one in our lives like yes we're prioritizing him but but he needs to be number one always amen that's that's something that i'm constantly just reminding myself of that's really really good yeah that's incredible because first i feel like you've been in my journal number two i think coming off of what you said about distractions i think there's this thing that i'm constantly reminded of check your settings you put that in the chat check your settings check it in terms of often times we treat god like the do not disturb setting on our phones we are ready to go we do our our whole to-do list and then we're like all right you know i'm just going to continue doing what i'm doing and we put god on do not disturb or if you are into emails we often put a message for god like an out of office email like we get all of our things done and then god is trying to speak to us god is trying to get a word to us you're asking him for that and he's like okay i'm trying but you have me on do not disturb and now you're out of the office so what is it yeah what is it i mean i'm trying to speak to you but i think what you just said about those little distractions like satan is extremely clever he came to steal kill and destroy yeah and he works a lot he is so much so in the details i think that it just like you said he's just really clever so i think it's really important to check your settings to see where you're at and to constantly reflect on where your settings are in your life maybe you need to adjust something or some things that's really yeah it really just depends yeah yeah so awesome yeah i love what you're saying there because like you were saying there's there could be a compound negative effect or those little compromises right and then before you know you are so distracted that you don't even realize you have that setting on right or off and you've completely eliminated um that pathway that that ability to speak to god so you could say hey like flip it back off or never flip it again because this is what's going to happen one thing that i've been struggling with and i always have to remind myself of is not to get too distracted by praise of man right not to get too caught up in an affirmation that isn't an affirmation from god where you were saying this in the scripture i wrote it down god's affirmation of his son jesus right so going back to like jesus is our message what's being affirmed in your life so if if the things that are being affirmed in my life are in alignment with with jesus then those are distractions and i don't want to get too caught up in those praises and that's really good as a church we always talk about celebrating and the importance of celebrating along the way and all the smallest successes that we can celebrate that's so important but we do a really good job of making sure that jesus is our message ruin those celebrations and i think that man can celebrate so much that isn't right so i i constantly want to remind myself that praise isn't necessarily always a good thing yeah and that's a great reminder because i mean last sunday was easter yeah and so we learned pastor rich said so beautifully that we really are affirmed because jesus was affirmed yeah it's good and so our affirmation is in jesus because he literally died for it so that we could have it yeah and so any other affirmation outside of that outside the message of the cross is false it's fickle and i think that's a great time to just really look at another question and that question is describe a time where jesus was enough to get you through a hard situation man name anyone pick one yeah right and pick one yeah man i time and time again i think that's i think it's it's what that's what's helped me get so far in my faith that at every turn at every chance at every difficult moment in my life god has shown up you know i read through the problems i remember in the beginning of my faith um i didn't really understand the bible i would read this thing i'd be like yo i don't understand it why does john say this why does matthew say that why does luke say this which one is it like i just there was so much i didn't understand all i could really understand was the proverbs for me that was like jesus's twitter account right you know like that's what it was to me and know what they were they were a bunch of if then statements yeah a wise men does this a foolish man is that you know um uh you know if you want to be near god then if you do this then god just i said well you know what i really understand the rest of this but these these little tweets from jesus right here i get this so here's the deal if i want to be a wise person i'm going to do this part right and and if i want god to move in my life that way i'm gonna do this for that so that's kind of where it started and i remember saying myself i won't be the reason why god doesn't bless me i won't be the reason why god doesn't show up in my life and um obviously i learned grace over time right i was such a newbie yeah but ever since that moment like god hasn't stopped showing up yeah no matter what the situation was no matter how impossible the scene looked it's like when you're watching one of these superhero movies you're like i know like the bad guy's beating him up but like there's gonna be there's a second movie so i know the superhero's gonna make it yeah i don't know how it's gonna happen right but i know he's gonna make it so for me it's just god has just never failed to show up amen always amen and um i'm so grateful for that to be honest you talk about we we live a life of gratitude right just gratefulness right and so um i would say just pick one he showed up at every single one and yeah yeah that's great god is absolutely faithful so this kind of leads to our summary and it reads like this mountaintops don't last forever and neither do the valleys it is through the ups and downs that god transforms us the high of the transfiguration was a symbol of god's divinity and confirmation that death was defeated the disciples gained a glimpse of god's glory similarly we can open our eyes to the signs wonders and miracles god performs even in our valleys the truth is because he conquered death our disappointments are never the end of the story they're never the end of the story amen his dreams for us override any of our failures you are not your failures yeah without us deserving the honor he is the god who says he is well pleased with us and you can put that in the chat he is well pleased with me but that leads us to our call to action i love this because jp joshua paul he calls us our soul work and we do this every time and crew so it says check your disappointments i love that check your disappointment so just type that in the chat check my disappointments check it at the door so you're going to check your disappointments where at the door story god's glory come on and leave them there and take time to reflect take time to reflect on the disappointment and why you're leaving it there why you're leaving it at god's door of glory and um one thing about vu we truly believe in the power of prayer that prayer is our first response not our last resort and i just want to take a moment to just pray and if you have a prayer request type it in the chat we have team there that wants to pray with you and we're believing what
