so you're thinking about moving to san diego california but you're not quite sure what the cost of living in san diego california is well i've got some good news and you're going to want to stick around because in this video i'm going to lay it all out there i'm going to talk about the cost of pretty much everything from food to taxes to gas to rent to home and the list goes on and on and i know a lot of you out there watching this already have this expectation that san diego is a very expensive place which it can be but if you're living in a different state like new york or maybe you're coming from the bay san francisco coming here might make a lot more sense and it might be a lot more reasonable but either way i'm going to let you be the judge so let's hop straight into it [Music] thanks so much for tuning in guys this is nicholas i'm a real estate advisor here in beautiful san diego california and i love helping people like you making a move here to san diego make more informed decisions so whether you're moving here in a year or you're moving here in a week it's always good to get that process started beforehand and learn about your options so shoot me a text give me a call shoot me an email whatever works best for you but let's talk about what we came here to talk about we came to talk about the cost of living here in san diego so first let's talk about the housing the housing is probably going to be the biggest expense for everybody either living here or moving here because let's face it we all got to live somewhere right we all need a roof over our heads whether we're single whether we have a family whatever the case is so let's talk about these home prices first because this is you know they're very expensive and over the past two years our prices have gone up a ton so our average price here in san diego is about nine hundred and fifteen thousand dollars for a home so that's very high it's one of the highest in the nations for a single family home our average is about 1.2 million and for a condo you're looking at an average of about 650 000. listen i know what you're thinking i can literally already hear you through the screen holy smokes that is expensive nick yes it is it is expensive like i said we're one of the highest in the nation but it's because so many people want to live here we have some of the best weather we have some great activities you can do stuff year round here but let's talk about rent prices because that high home prices have actually put pressure on our rental market here making rents very expensive as well so depending on the area and where you're going to be living in san diego rents are going to change and go up and down so on average you're going to be you can expect to pay anywhere from 1600 to 2200 a month for a studio or a one bedroom now if you're going to start to look at two bedrooms you're going to be anywhere from 2200 a month and more and then if you're looking for a three bedroom or a four bedroom you can really expect to pay more than 3 400 a month for something like that so if you are moving here long term i highly recommend that you eventually do buy a home maybe you have to rent for a year or two that's totally fine but just have that goal of purchasing a home or a condo here in san diego because it's going to be a great investment and you're going to be really happy you did do that in 5-10 years down the road we just have no more room to build here and the quality of life is so awesome here that people are constantly moving from all over the nation here to san diego next let's talk about the cost of utilities here in san diego because whether you are renting a home or you're a home owner here you're going to be paying that utility bill to keep the power on i know you're probably going to want to be jumping in the ocean and taking your showers but you're still going to need water at the house so let's talk a little bit about utilities one thing about san diego is our climate and you know during the winter months you're not really going to need to run that heater because it doesn't get very cold and in the summertime you know depending on where you're at you could really need ac but it's going to depend where you live so if you live you know 20 minutes away from the coast you're probably going to need to be running the ac on some of the some of the summer days and just to to teach you guys on how much of a san diegan i am and just for reference when it gets cold here it's like maybe 50. that's that's really cold to me that's maybe when you're running the heater depends on where you're coming from but the summertime a hot hot day to me is about 85 to 90. so you know hopefully you don't think i'm a little girl now but that's kind of how i gauge the temperature here whether it's super hot or super cold but anyways let's talk about what you can expect for your monthly bills for utilities so if you own or rent a three-bedroom two-bath home you can expect to pay anywhere from 120 to 150 for your electricity bill and keep in mind solar is very popular out here because you can totally offset that and literally have zero monthly charges on your electric bill next thing is water you can expect to pay anywhere from fifty dollars to eighty dollars a month on water gas gas isn't going to be too bad you're going to pay anywhere from 20 to 40 bucks a month also internet here depending on the provider in your neighborhood you can expect to pay on average about 80 a month for internet and you know i'm not sure about phone bills and if they vary you know across the country but here i have verizon i have unlimited service and i pay about 80 a month on that as well now let's get into transportation what is the cost of transportation here in san diego well first off i couldn't imagine not having a car while living in san diego i did it for a bit but then again i was in high school i didn't have a car and i was skating everywhere or i was on the bike meeting up with friends but that's completely different so only about six percent of households here in san diego don't own a car so it's a very car centric area and i would highly recommend that you do have a car so there's places you can get away but it's going to depend on the walkability so some places in carmel valley you have downtown encinitas you have carlsbad village downtown oceanside parts of la jolla downtown san diego these are all places you could probably get away with not having a car as long as you have you know an e-bike or you have some sort of public transportation so what are some of the costs associated with driving around san diego and public transportation well first off fueling up in san diego can be pretty expensive so i drive a newer toyota tacoma and i'm spending anywhere from 100 to 115 every five to seven days just filling up my gas tank so that's a pretty pretty big expense to me and san diegans as well so keep in mind the national average for gas price right now in july 2022 is about four dollars and sixty cents and in san diego our average gas price right now is about six dollars so it's it's well above that national average just like everything else here in san diego and california but you you need to keep this in mind because we do have a gas tax here of about 50 cents a gallon so that takes a toll on our gas prices as well and we'll talk more about taxes pretty soon but one other thing i want to cover if you're going to own a car here is our car insurance is also about eight dollars more a month than the national average so you'll be spending about probably around 120 a month on car insurance as for public transportation you're going to have about four different choices on what you want to utilize it's really going to depend on where you live but there's gonna be the sprinter the coaster the bus and the trolley those are your four options unless elon musk decides to actually follow through on his bullet train but we'll see about that but anyways back to the actual public transportation you're gonna have um the the sprinter which is actually only gonna be in north county and that's gonna run from east to west or west to east so you can hop on in escondido stop in vista or even stop all the way on oceanside so that's your choice for that and that'll run you about three to four bucks for a fare on that or you can ride the bus which the bus is pretty much all over san diego county and it's about two dollars and fifty cents for a bus fare or you can just go ahead and get a monthly pass for about 72 the trolley is really just going to be anywhere from la jolla utc area all the way downtown that's going to run you about and fifty cents as well and you can use that same uh monthly pass for seventy two dollars on that one too but that's going to be more downtown and south and then if my favorite is going to be the coaster if you live on the coast you're gonna have a lot better access to walkability and public transportation in my opinion the coaster i utilize this i utilize this very often i take this from oceanside down to downtown san diego and go see a pottery's game you can stop at so many different towns on the way which is really cool and it's about nine dollars for a single pass on there and then about 15 for a round trip which you can use all day so that's a great option depending on where you live you can even take something called the amtrak so you can take the coaster anywhere from oceanside all the way down to downtown san diego but you can also take the amtrak from certain stops like oceanside and shoot up to you could even go all the way up to santa barbara if you wanted to which i've done in the past it's very cool it's a very long ride but you can do that you can even go to la you can go to san juan capistrano so you have some options when you're on the coast with public transportation there's two things people say are inevitable in life and one is death and the second is taxes yes taxes we all have to pay them no matter where you live so here in san diego let's talk a little bit about our taxes our sales tax to start is about 7.75 which if you're coming from a place like oregon you know you don't have any sales tax up there so coming down here when you see something for 1.99 it's not going to be that price when you go to check out it's gonna be closer to two dollars and fourteen cents if it's a two dollar item so keep that in mind next is our income tax here you can be taxed anywhere from one to thirteen percent depending on your tax bracket and next is property taxes which you know here in san diego our property taxes aren't very high our prices are high which can kind of make the property tax high but our property tax here is about 1.25 of whatever the purchase price of the home is so if you bought a home for a million dollars your property tax is going to be about 12 000 a year now hopefully you're not hungry but let's jump into the cost of food groceries and drinks here in san diego once again they're a little bit higher than the national average but we already know that so let's talk about groceries first me and my girlfriend are very avid trader joe shoppers we can find some healthy stuff there for a good price and we're spending anywhere from 120 to 150 dollars a week on groceries that's really not that bad for two people and we kind of just go for it when we're at the grocery store too and we're cooking our lunches at home and we're having our dinners at home most of the time during the week friday saturdays sometimes we'll eat out but besides that we're eating at home for the most part so it's not that bad about 150 bucks for two people every week at the grocery store you also have other great places like sprouts fraser farms these places you can find you know lower prices on produce and all that stuff now let's talk about eating out this is this is going to be expensive anywhere you go in my opinion whenever i go travel if i'm going to arizona or i'm going somewhere else in the in the country it's it's always expensive when you eat out so here in san diego you can expect to pay on average about 14 for a meal if you're eating lunch you can usually find something for 11 bucks 12 bucks but as you start to go out to dinner or you're having a date night you're going to be spending well over 20 25 bucks for a plate of food beers you can expect to pay anywhere from eight to 10 bucks craft cocktails you're going to spend upwards of 12 for the most part i've seen places where they're 25 bucks for a drink which is a little ridiculous but they usually are really good and you end up getting two and you're like oh my gosh did i just spend 50 bucks on two drinks yes you did and i do this often anyways that's what you can kind of expect for prices if you're eating out or if you're going to the grocery store and also san diego has some of the most small farms in california not even just in california but in the nation so there's a very wide abundance of fresh produce with all these local fresh farms around us we have a ton of farmers markets every week every weekend i mean there is no shortage of them and they're really cool place to check out because you can find some really fresh produce at a really good price last but not least let's talk a little bit about the cost for health and fitness entertainment and activities so san diego has everything here literally everything we have some of the best weather in the world which makes it so you can be outside year round so if you want to go hiking if you want to go mountain biking if you want to jump on your fishing boat and go fishing get a kayak too and go fishing off that you have so many options and a lot of them are free too my favorite is the beach the beach is right here even if you live the furthest away in san diego from the beach it'll maybe take you 40 minutes to get to the beach and you can spend all day there it's free you can bring your sandwich sunscreen umbrella surfboard whatever you want and just kind of kick back all day but let's talk a little bit about health health and fitness because it's all around us here you'll see people drinking their green juices you'll see them walk into their yoga class with their yoga mat but a gym membership here depending on where you go i go to eos and it's a very nice facility and i pay about 15 bucks a month for my gym membership they're open 24 hours too depending on which one you go to so that's a great price but you can spend you know up to 200 a month depending on the facility and what they provide for you there as for sporting events we kind of do lack a little bit on sports here we used to have the san diego chargers but they are no longer with us sadly so qualcomm is out we have no more football down here but we do have the san diego padres over at petco park and this is a beautiful stadium a ton of different food vendors in there and a ticket will start at about 20 dollars to get you in there so that's a great thing to check out also we have the san diego goals which is a minor league hockey team but these games are so fun and this is at the sports arena which is just outside of point loma it's in mission bay and these are so much fun they have two dollar beer nights on fridays and i mean hockey's a great sport to watch and these guys are minor league so they really go at it and you know they put in their all as for attractions we have a wide variety of stuff to do and it really depends if you have a family or maybe you're just dating or you're just going to places with friends but you have a very big assortment so you can go check out things like the movie theater we have these all over the place i know but we have some really cool ones here called sinopolis which are you know full on you can recline and lay in these things people will serve you drinks it's it's an easy place to fall asleep at the same time but you can go check out a movie there and see some really cool movies very comfortable for about 20 bucks regal theaters huge hint every tuesday if you just sign up give them your email every tuesday you can get a ticket for six dollars and go check out whatever movie you want which is a really good deal and it's the same kind of environment they don't serve you drinks but you have the same seating as some of those luxury theaters where you can fully recline in them and it's a good time for a really good price a couple other things you can do are the museums in balboa these will run you about 10 to 20 bucks for admission and every i think is every third tuesday it's free to go look at these museums so that's another thing to really keep in mind and go check out golf is another great activity or source of entertainment here in san diego i think it has something to do with our great weather and that's why a lot of people are coming here to play just the sport of golf and i know golf digest named us one of the top 50 golf destinations in the world so that's huge and we have well over 70 golf courses in san diego and these prices can range anywhere from twenty dollars all the way up to over two hundred dollars to playing a round of golf at any of these golf courses well that's it guys that is the real cost of living in san diego
