When you want to be this... But you also want to be this...  But you also want to be this! Sorry for being MIA guys but I promise I've  got a fun video up my sleeves—I'm gonna be your   fashion trend analyst for 2022. I haven't uploaded  on YouTube lately because I'm totally consumed   by TikTok. I've been experimenting with short  form content so please give your girl a follow!  And because of the ridiculous amount of time I  spend on TikTok, I've noticed a problematic   fashion phenomenon... Is anyone aware of how fast  trend cycles are these days? I personally think   TikTok plays a huge part in this because it's  making fast fashion even faster! Have you guys   seen this dress or this dress on your fyp? It's  insane because individual fashion pieces are   going viral! I was listening to Emma Chamberlain's  podcast on the topic of Trendy vs Timeless   and she talked about all the trends in 2021 and  predicted which trend will become timeless. So   in today's video, I'm going to talk about all  the trends Emma's gone through in the podcast   and predict their fate. I'm gonna let you  know whether you should be investing in   them, or skipping them! Before I start my video, I  would like to thank Ana Luisa for sending me   three pieces of timeless jewelry. Just to be  upfront, the products are gifted but i haven't been   paid to talk about the brand. The reason why I love  to work with Ana Luisa is because I genuinely   love their pieces and what the brand stands  for. I've chosen the Octo Earrings in small,   the Scarlett Earrings in medium and the Morgan  Necklace in wide. The quality is stunning! Their   designs are dainty, classic and very elegant and  they're so easy to style and layer. If you've got   a few pieces of Ana Luisa jewelry, chances are  they'll go together. I'm more of a gold jewelry   person and the pieces i got from Ana Luisa are  all 14k gold-plated so they don't tarnish easily.   On top of making cute timeless jewelry, I also  love their design philosophy. They use recycled   noble materials whenever possible and they're  very transparent about where they source their   gemstones. They're currently running the biggest  sale of the year and you can buy one and get one 60% off! Click the link in my description box and the  discount code should be automatically applied.   If you happen to watch this video after the  sales, you can always use my code VIKKIPEDIA10   to get yourself a 10% discount at checkout. If you  want to see Ana Luisa review videos in depth,   go check out these videos. I want to go through  why chasing trends blindly could be problematic.   Disclaimer: I'm not trying to bash people for  participating in trends but the first problem   is overconsumption. Trend cycles historically last  way longer but they're now broken into these micro   trends. Instead of decades of collective  culture, societal factors boiled down to   a general sense of style—say 80s fashion, you're  now talking about individual pieces of clothing   blowing up overnight because of TikTok or  influencer marketing. It drives demand very rapidly,   which means supply needs to go up and we see all  these cheaper dupes that are mass-produced and   they're not made very ethically. These micro trends  only last for months or even weeks. Because they're   so recognisable, no one wants to be seen wearing  them after the trend so they end up in landfills.   The second problem is lack of inclusivity. I'm  sure some of you would have stumbled across the   'Is it fashion or is she just skinny' videos. Some  trends only work on certain body types, which   makes it very hard for people that are not of a  particular size or shape to participate in them.   The price point is also not very accessible for  some and it drives people too fast fashion. The   third problem is lack of individuality. For me,  fashion is not just slapping some clothes on.   It's a means of expressing yourself  and affirming your identity, especially   for some LGBTQI+ and PoC communities. These  micro trends to me create this cookie cutter world   where everyone is wanting the same thing and  it confines what deems to be fashionable in a   very narrow, often quite Eurocentric definition. I'm  not saying don't buy any trend items—I'll probably   continue to participate in some trends, but what  I'm saying is try to choose ones that have the   potential to be timeless so you'll get a lot more  wear out of your purchase. Bow let's get back to   the ultimate showdown of 'Trendy vs Timeless'!  P.S. This is just my personal opinion. Feel free   to disagree in the comment section. The first one  is leather. I think it depends on what the item of   clothing is. Good leather jackets and good leather  shoes? Absolutely timeless! What became trendy in   2021 were leather pants, shirts and blazers.  The 'Pinteresty' form-fitted leather pants for   me—they're just a trend. If I was to invest in some,  I'll probably go for ones with more of a straight   cut. I'll probably opt for a more traditional  biker style leather jacket over a leather blazer   or leather shirt because I think those are just  trends. Blazers. Emma Chamberlain thinks oversized   blazers are just trendy and the more form-fitted  ones are more timeless. I actually disagree! I think   the fitted, more cropped look kind of pushes  the blazer into more of a corporate,   utilitarian fashion item, instead of a fashionable  item. I reckon the oversized blazer creates more   interesting silhouettes. The juxtaposition of an  oversized blazer with a more form-fitted, tighter   bottom for me is absolutely timeless. Long skirts.  I reckon long skirts are great wardrobe staples,   especially for fall and winter. But i'm not too  sure if long skirts were a trend in 2021. The more   modest length for me has more versatility over  a mini skirt and I reckon they always look put   together so they're definitely timeless. I would  suggest investing in a good long knit skirt in  colours that are neutral—say an oatmeal, an army  green or a rusty brown. Something that's a little   more playful than black or white but they'll  never go out of style. High socks with sneakers.   That's actually a little bit out of trend now.  The only way I can see it working beyond 20 21   is to swap the long socks with a pair of shorter  tube socks and kind of rock them like Princess   Diana in the athleisure kind of way. Now that's  what I call 'timeless'! This is my Hugh Hefner outfit...   Animal print. I think it depends on what the print  is. The classic leopard print will always have its   place in fashion but I reckon the cow print and  the zebra print, which were a hit in 2021—they're on   their way out. These prints are too distinctive and I  reckon they put an outfit to an era straight away   so I don't think they'll last. Knee-high boots.  Absolutely timeless! I reckon a good pair of   knee-high boots are absolutely essential for any  wardrobe because they just elevate any outfit.   Apart from wearing them with a mini skirt, I reckon  they look extremely fashionable when you pair them   with culottes or a midi skirt and leave no skin  showing. Invest in some good leather knee-high   boots in either brown or black with a reasonable  heel height. They'll become your winter wardrobe staples.  Cowboy boots. Cowboy boots for me lean  into the more kind of dress-up, festival fashion.   The way their style currently on Pinterest for me  is just trendy, not timeless. The reason why I say   that is because it's literally swapping a really  classic long boot for something that is a bit too   distinctive, which automatically puts an expiry  date to an outfit. If you haven't bought into   the whole cowboy boot trend, I would say just get a  pair of simple knee-high boots instead. You'll get   a lot more wear out of them. Skinny jeans. I think  they're just straight up out of trend now. I reckon   some girls look amazing in that silhouette but  I've never felt super comfortable wearing them.   Personally, I think they are too figure-hugging  and I also think they are not too sophisticated-looking so I would say invest in a pair  of straighter leg jeans, like Levi's 501   for a more timeless look. Oh low-rise jeans... No, no,  no! They don't flatter my body type. They don't work   on a person with a long torso and shorter legs  like myself, or a person with a rounder stomach.   The look is not very elevated in my opinion  and it's a trend that is not very inclusive so hmm... Nah! Tiny sunglasses. I think the right sunglasses  instantly make an outfit more fashionable. The tiny sunglasses were super trendy for a hot minute  but I think they're on the way out, especially   the very tiny lenses. The XL square  lenses are actually making a massive comeback.   If you want to invest in some timeless sunglasses,  I would choose something a bit more classic,   like the 70s round shape or a softer square shape,  like the Ray-Ban Wayfarer but nothing too big or   too small. Bucket hats. Emma Chamberlain thinks  bucket hats are just trendy and the timeless   option would be a baseball cap and I actually  disagree! I think both the bucket hat and the   baseball cap are timeless, but for me the bucket  hat is more fashionable and whereas the baseball   cap is more of a utilitarian option. Even if the  bucket hat falls out of the main trend in 2022,   I reckon they'll always have a place in the  hip hop and streetwear subcultures. If you   were to invest in one, I would say don't go for  a distinctive texture like the fluffy ones or   the leather ones that are very trendy in 2021, but  go for something with a more classic fabric, like   cotton or linen. Leg warmers. How can they be a  timeless item? They're just straight-up trendy!   Fashion the cyclical, like... A period? 😅 They were trendy in the 90s when I was a kid.   (Yep I'm old.) They are trendy in 2021. They're  probably gonna make a comeback in 20 years' time   but I just can't see them continue being a hit  in 2022. Mesh fabric. The cutout thing, you know,   that 'DIY cut your stockings into a top' thing? For  me, it's just a trend. But i think mesh fabric is   absolutely timeless! Think Jean Paul Gaultier and  his iconic mesh tops—they're so playful, classic   and just a great statement piece to have. If you  want to invest in one, I would say try your luck   and thrift a really colourful, bold, Jean-Paul-Gaultier-like one, or just purchase something   really simple—a turtleneck black top like what  I'm wearing, which is great for layering.    Leggings. They'll always have a place in the gym or the airport  but I don't consider them a style item. iI someone   pulls off a cute outfit wearing leggings, I'll  think, "Wow! How incredible they managed to look   put- together wearing a pair of leggings!"  But I'll never think, "Oh wow! This outfit is   so inspiring." Sorry! Layering jewelry. I think it  depends on what the jewelry is made out of. Layering beaded necklaces or those chunky chokers for me is  just trendy but layering dainty, classic pieces   like what I'm wearing right now is timeless. Go for  classic materials like gold and silver instead of   rose golds or plastic. Opt for designs that are  uncomplicated and simple. Colourful rings. They made   a massive comeback in 2021. The Mon Cher Moi rings—they  were massive on TikTok for a minute and of course   a bunch of cheaper dupes were made because the  real ones were quite expensive. Don't get me wrong—   I think they're cute and I remember wearing them  when I was like, 12. Even though they are pretty, I don't think they're very versatile. They don't look  right with say, a work outfit. So if you haven't   invested in them, I would say just skip them. Corset tops. First of all, I think a corset is a great   item for layering and I just love all the awesome  outfits this trend has created in 2021. I love how   people got so creative and they started layering  a corset over a shirt or dress and created some   very interesting silhouettes. But i think that  fast fashion, Pinteresty way of wearing a corset,   like that corset belt look, or the very heavy  underwire look—they're on the way out. Cargo pants. I think they'll always have a place in fashion but  If i was to buy some pants tomorrow, I'll probably   invest in a pair of straight leg jeans or some slacks. If you want to dabble in this trend, I would say go for a more classic colour, like a beige or an army green and stay away from loud colours and patterns.  Okay, a good one: socks and sandals! What do  you think? I'd say it's like the stock market—it's   a high risk, high reward option. It's quite hard to  nail because you need a bit of fashion knowledge   and the eye to style for it to work but when  you do you, honestly look like the most fashionable   person in the world! Surprisingly timeless in  my opinion. Tennis skirt. Please don't yell at me   but I've never found this preppy tennis chic look  fashionable and I can't see it lasting beyond 2021...   So i would say just skip it. Crochet. Interesting.  Avant Basic was massive in 2021 and I can see a   lot of funky 70s patterns and fabric choices  like crocheting popping up. I think this is   just a trend and it'll pass. Crochet items will  always have a place in the beach and surf culture   but if you haven't invested in them, I would say  just completely skip them and leave them in 2021...   Some quick-fire footwear 'Trendy vs Timeless'. Dr Martens. Timeless. But I think the chunkiness makes   them a little bit hard to pull off for some people.  Your 'torso vs leg' ratio is quite important. It could easily end up looking like a utility boot.  Plain white sneakers. Absolutely timeless. Maybe   not the 'dad shoes' look with the very thick soles  but they'll look good with literally anything.   Nike Air Force 1s Low have the most timeless  shape and design in my opinion. Chunky black boots. Timeless. Especially when there's a little bit of a  heel height. Probably a more versatile option than   Dr Martens. Chunky loafers. Trendy. I know this  trend is massive right now so if you want to   invest in some, I would say go for a slimmer, less chunky style for a more timeless look. Stilettos. Timeless. They'll always have a place in fashion and I think they elevate any outfit. Be sensible with   the heel height if you were to invest in a pair  because if they're too uncomfortable, you won't   wear them much. Wedge shoes. They made a bit of a  comeback in 2021 but I think they're just a trend.   So this wraps up my trend predictions for 2022!  What was your favourite trend?
