Lili Elbe is   notable for being the first transgender woman  to openly undergo gender-confirming surgery in   1930. Her storied life has been the subject of two  books, including David Ebershoff's international   bestseller "The Danish Girl,". Before coming  out as transgender, New York native Christine   Jorgensen fought in the U.S. Army during World  War II.
