[Music] hi and welcome to watch it played my name is rodney smith and in this video we're going to learn the two to four player game trails designed by henry audubon and published by key master games who helped sponsor this video there are very few things that are as relaxing as going for a long walk on a nature trail and that's what you're going to be doing here collecting some items along the way taking pictures encountering wildlife and perhaps some other hikers and you'll be trying to do all of this before the sun sets and before it does join me at the table and let's learn how to play to set up find the seven trail tiles two of these are known as the trail head and trail and they're easy to identify because they'll have player numbers in these corners and these two tiles you'll set aside for now the rest are known as trail sites and these have a night and a day side shuffle and put them in a row with their day sides face up but for your first game they recommend this exact layout which you can use as well if you'd like now get the trail head and end tiles and ensure the side with your number of players indicated here is face up we'll set up a three player game in this video so we'll put them on these sides you then set the trail head on the far left and the trail end on the far right above the trail end set this sun token pointing at the rightmost icon here at the top now look for the specific trail sites that show these three symbols they represent the three different resources found in the game leaves acorns and rocks beneath them you'll place the related resource cubes now in this video i'm gonna have to move things around the table quite a bit so i'll be putting all of these cubes into some game trays that i have and if you'd like to get some of your own you'll find links in the description of this video on the center tile set this wildlife bear token putting the die nearby and then below the trail site showing this bridge set this bird trophy token now find the cards with this back that make up the badges deck you'll give them a good shuffle and then deal two of them face up to the left and to the right of the trail like i'm doing here and when you're done you set the rest of the deck below the trail head next find the cards with this back that make up the photo deck you'll give these a good shuffle as well and then place the pile face down beneath the trail end every player now picks a hiker taking its matching colored piece and one of each of the three different types of colored cubes from the supply you also find the canteen that matches your hiker's color and set it so the full side is face up at the beginning of the game like this then deal each player a badge card from the deck now you can always examine your own badge card but keep it a secret from the other players then randomly pick a starting player in a four player game the first player and the person to their left sets their hikers on the trail end facing the trail and the other two players put their hikers on the trail head also facing the trail however in a two or three player game like we have here all players start at the head of the trail and you can see what direction your hiker is facing based on their cap and walking stick and that's the setup in trails you and the other players will be hiking throughout the day across a beautiful trail collecting objects in order to complete objectives that reward you with points and other bonuses you might also gather some pictures and do a little bird watching now once the sun finally sets the player who had the best day of hiking and got the most points wins the game is played over a series of turns starting with the first player and then going clockwise around and around the table and on your turn you'll advance your hiker one or two tiles forward in the direction they're facing for example from here i can choose to go to this tile or this one now let's say i go here after moving you resolve the actions represented by the symbols on the bottom of the tile that you hiked to now these actions are optional you can skip them if you don't want to do them and we'll go over the various actions in a moment but there are a couple of other rules about moving that we should be aware of first of all when players move they can land on the same space as another hiker and resolve the action there as well players don't block each other secondly if you have a full canteen instead of moving one or two spaces on your turn you can move as far as you like in the direction that you're facing just flip your canteen over to show it's now empty and then go you can even go all the way to the other end of the trail once you've emptied your canteen you won't be able to use it to make a big move like that again until you've refilled it and we'll see how that works a little bit later now though let's go through all the types of actions you'll find on the various tiles each of these show a different type of resource when you land on one of them take the related resource and put it in front of yourself and if the supply of pieces ever runs out when you would need to take one which isn't likely to happen just use a suitable replacement going to this tile will let you return any one resource you have back to the supply for any two from one of the other resource types so maybe i'd turn in this leaf to collect two rocks this action lets you pay any one resource you have back to the supply in order to take a photo there are two different ways to perform this action one is to draw two cards from the top of the photo deck you examine them keeping them a secret from the other players and then pick one to keep and put face down in front of yourself the other you put into a face up discard pile nearby when taking the photo action instead of drawing two and picking one you can just take the photo on top of the discard pile you can always look at your own photos but don't show anyone else these will be worth a certain number of points represented by this symbol and they may also show some birds which can earn you points at the end of the game as we'll see later if the photo deck ever runs out while playing just flip the discard pile face down into a new deck but don't shuffle it so those are all the symbols found on the trail sites the tiles that are between the trail head and trail end but during your hike you may land on a space with the wildlife bear now when you land in its space before taking the tile action you first roll this die you now move the bear to the tile that shows the same action as the one on the die and then you resolve the action of the space that you just moved to and the space that the bear just moved to and you can do these in either order so i might first gain this acorn here and then maybe use this action to trade in this leaf and gain two more rocks now it's possible that you might instead roll the same symbol as the space the bear is already in and in that case you get to resolve the action of that tile twice so here i would gain two acorns on the other hand if you roll the side showing the bear then you can move the bear to any trail site of your choosing including the one that it's currently in but this token can never be moved to either the trail head or the trail end speaking of which let's talk about what happens when your hiker reaches the trail end you always have to stop your movement on the trail end if you enter its space on your turn and then you resolve its actions first turn your hiker around to face the trail again because the next time you move you'll go in this direction then this top symbol means that you gain the sun bonus if the sun token is still over the trail and tile it will be pointing at one of the icons that make up what is known as the sun track you then gain the bonus it's currently pointing to so in this case a rock after getting the bonus the arrow here means that you move the sun one space to the left on the sun track so now it would go to this icon then finally resolving this symbol means that you can earn either or both of the badges here along with the one in your hand if you want to earn a badge you return the resources it shows in its middle area back to the related supplies and then put the badge face up in front of you so if you had all the resources for both cards at the end of the trail and the one in your hand you could earn all three badges at once or any two or just one that said you don't have to complete any badges if you don't want to even if you could at the end of the game badges may be worth points as shown by this symbol on them and they often have a bonus action here that you can perform as soon as you earn them for example this one would let you take a photo action right away at no cost this one lets you trade in one resource for any two of another resource now you don't have to do this if you don't want to and if you can't do it maybe you don't have any resources right now then you don't gain the reward but you still get to collect the badge itself and it will be worth points at the end of the game sometimes the badge might show the wildlife symbol and if so you roll the die and then move the bear token as usual and gain the action of the space that it moved to if a bed shows the sunshine symbol then you gain the benefit that the sunshine token is currently pointing to but don't move the sun token after some badges like the collector here don't have an instant reward but their symbols indicate that at the end of the game this card will be worth one point for every badge you've earned of its type including the collector itself now each badge has a type shown in this corner so if you had collected all three of these badges then at the end of the game this badge would be worth one two three points we won't go over all the different badge effects in this video but you can find them all explained here in the rulebook if you have any questions while playing after taking the actions at trail end you then replace any face up badges you earned with new ones drawn from the deck if you ever earned the badge you had in your hand also replace it with one from the deck as well now remember i said that when you reach trail end you gain the reward the sun is pointing at and then you move it one space to the left on this sun track that means the next player to reach trail end would get this acorn bonus and then moves the token to here now eventually the sun token will leave the sun track and when it does it advances to the next tile then when someone reaches the trail end and gains their sun bonus they instead collect the action of the site the sun is currently over which is here so that means they'd gain one rock the sun will then advance to the next tile when this happens flip the tile left behind over keeping any tokens that were on it there but now its night side will be showing face up in this way over the course of the game slowly the sun is setting and darkening the trail as it goes and as tiles flip over they'll reveal new actions so let's go over those now for each one of these you'll gain two of the related resource instead of the usual one when this tile's flipped over instead of exchanging one resource for two of one of the other types you exchange one resource and then you gain one of each of the other two types of resources on the night side of this tile you'll also get to take a photo action but this time for free you don't have to pay a resource and those are all of the night actions now we know that when you reach the trail end you turn around and on future turns we'll be heading back the other way so now let's take a look at what happens when you reach the trail head first you turn your hiker around to face the trail again and the next time you move you'll head back in the other direction now the symbol here means that you refill your canteen if it's empty by flipping it face up again and the bottom symbol means that you now have another chance to earn badges this time the two on this side of the trail and or the one in your reserve and those are all the types of actions you might resolve on your turn so on a turn you first move one or two spaces or use your canteen to travel as far forward as you want then you resolve the actions of the space you landed on after that you check to see how many resources you're holding you can collect any number of them during your turn but at the end of your turn you can only have eight so return any extras of your choosing back to the supply also make sure you replaced any face-up badges on either end of the trail that you might have completed or the one in your hand if you happen to have completed that as well then the next player in clockwise order goes and turns will continue like this until the game ends this happens when a player reaches the trail end and the sun is on the final leftmost icon of the trailheads suntrack remember the sun only advances when a player reaches the trail end so you will have walked the trail back and forth a few times before the sun gets to the last space of the trail head once a player has moved to the trail end and causes the sun token to move off the leftmost trail site that site is flipped over as usual and then the sun token is moved to point to the icon on the far right of the trail headsun track the next time a player goes to trail and the sun token will then move here and eventually a player will arrive at trail end when the sun token is pointing at the final symbol this means that they'll get a free photo action and they also collect the sun token and put it in front of themselves because the sun token is no longer on the trail no more sun bonuses can be earned for the rest of the game however from this point on if a player earns this sunshine badge instead of getting the sun's action they'll instead gain a free photo action as soon as the sun has been collected by a player each other player except for them will get one final turn in clockwise order and then it's time to check the final scores first each player reveals the photos they collected and then adds the victory points on them to any showing on badges that they collected then check all your victory point symbols for any birds standing on them these are the birds that you saw on your hike so add all the ones showing on your photos and badges together to get a final bird count the player who got the most collects this bird trophy which is worth four extra points if any player is tied for seeing the most birds they each get four points and then the player with the most points overall wins in the case of a tie the tied player who earned the most badges wins if there's still a tie the tied player who collected the most photos wins and if there's still a tie the tied player who saw the most birds wins and if there's still a tie the tied players share the victory and that's everything you need to know to play trails if you enjoyed the look of this game you might also like parks by the same designer and publisher team which will have you taking even more hikes through a variety of different parks over four seasons of a year however if you have any questions about anything you saw here feel free to put them in the comments below and i'll gladly
