destiny today for the rise in the tour de france is the highest pass in the pyrenees at 7 267 feet it's day 17. welcome to the stage coverage live of the tour de france presented by rocket mortgage as the peloton continue meandering to the race start 3.4 kilometers to go i'm phil liggett and joined by bravo bob this is the big one today an absolutely beastly profile i am so excited about the gc battle it's a fitting battlefield for the ultimate destiny of the yellow jersey in this year's tour de france they have put together a spectacular route for today's stage and i cannot wait for the proceedings to get going well as the riders continue uh 3.2 kilometers to go it's all about the finish on today's stage bob so let's check it out with the geico stage map starting in murray not a long stage but absolutely brutal climbing to finish off the perry sword is the first category one valeron assay and then a very technical descent down into st larry solon before the final climb beyond category san loris along quarter potay we saw this for the first time all the way to the top of the cold deporte won by nairo quintana back in 2018 one of the greatest climbers who's ever lived and it's a tremendous gc battle and a lot of racing and one thing to be wary of is cross winds are predicted at certain times during the day and that would make for some incredibly dynamic racing throughout the entire day of the big mountain stage let's check in on the weather bob at the start today as they roll out it's 63 degrees fahrenheit there are possible scattered showers but not too tragic at the finish today it will cool off on top of the mountain pass to 44 degrees fahrenheit and will remain there mostly cloudy okay well i went for vaudevan art it may seem a strange choice but the way he's riding i think he's putting in a late bid to win the king of the mountains and of course all the points there's 50 points if you win the two climbs today and that will give him a lead but i would expect there would have to be a breakaway as there has been the last few days and he's been part of it and if he does that again i do believe he'll be the strongest of the mountains of the finish we will find out of course the rioters here bob a lot of head turners here as they all look for the next move these are our leaders now uh darian godin anthony tergis anthony perez maxim chevalier lucos fostelberger and danny van poppel are the riders setting the pace bernard is trying to reach them he's on his own betwixt peloton and the six leaders well we just saw that wonderful success by seb cruz it was a bright spot on a tough two and a half weeks for the yumbo visma team of cepcus and it's just got a little bit worse today because we've seen the abandon of that stephen christwich at first time he's ever pulled out of the tour and he was third overall in 2019. there we are what one kilometers to go do you think they'll race for it see if possible doesn't put in a dig his teammate who's left the tour peter sagan won that green jersey competition seven times in his career also 1500 euros to about inside of two grand prize money uh on offer and if i was in this group i would sprint for it deliver some spawn dualies to me and my face enjoy the off season a little bit more that's another word from the bob roll dictionary which i have to go and look what it means later on but i'll find out there's the sprint line in front 8 23 back to the bunch so no worry about them that'll be a great sprint though for green and when steve purina was there he found just a group of three people who just arrived from nantes well the rest have just arrived now because there's quite a few people up here too much whether we're going to get much action well maybe we are i don't know who else but he's a very good sprinter danny van popple and he's living his craft here unchallenged [Music] but right now it's more about the green jersey bob and his team tim de klerk here on the front bringing him forward tim the clerk davide ballerini then morkov then cavendish and then michael matthews and then sonny colbrelli so let's see if matthew's team doesn't try to jump the the kunic riders but they're setting such a hard tempo that might not be possible baladini to the front in the dark blue with more carve on his wheel well cavendish has stayed in the race in the mountains and struggle every day to beat the time limit he's not going to throw this one away without a fight that is for sure michael matthews his closest challenger in the green jersey competition doesn't want him to get too many points matthew's now sat on the wheel of the green jersey tucked in nicely sorry he's third wheel on the green jersey one seven one seven one i can't read his number in the sky colbrelli in the green is locked on matthews they're broke for that now that's interesting mess gets goes but look at cavendish has gone on the inside now being led out by marco he's not pushing too hard here for the line or he's waiting for it because colbrelli's taken cavendish's will and matthies has gone for it but right behind him on the line again of just a point that's all matthews has got because cavanish has come right in behind him and beaten colbrelli as well i think he'll call that an okay result kevin just not wanting to give up too many points so put the effort in and loses a point to matthews but gains a point on cobrelli good lead out by mesgetch michael matthews making short work of that intermediate sprint tomorrow another day for intermediate points but a couple of climbs before that both of them categorized at just four but that was an impressive sprint by michael matthews so the legs are still good in the last week of the tour de france for michael matthews cavendish right there where he needed to be so impressive riding by the man in the green jersey also but as we come up towards the summit half a kilometer for the group of six fights here they are how good is it to see the crowd back on the tour de france after last year they're still very much covered here in france but it looks as though they're allowed to watch without masks now [Music] [Applause] this is the group of six setting the trend they will contest the first king of the mountain points and all of them will go with those six riders there'll be nothing left for the chase group this is uae and still looks calm cool and casual this man who won the tour last year he's 22 years of age this time around and without vanart he's back in the thick of things as well the overall standings around look at the battle of the second place just seconds across second to fifth the gatch has got a nice little bit in hand of five minutes and 18 seconds it's today and tomorrow if they're going to make any impression on pagacio and carapaz has got to attack well i'm not sure about ineos anymore bob dale gegenhart winner of last year's tour of italy he's got about five more minutes of climbing to get to the top of the paris sword and those are going to be some agonizing minutes for teo gegenhart getting dropped this far from the finish line does not bode well for sending riders up the front purely tour excuse me this is way up in the breakaway so that's anthony and perez getting second godon getting third and it looked like paulseberger just getting the better of maxine chevalier and the sprinter doing well danny van popple still in the breakaway i've never seen him ride so well in the mountains in a tour de france danny van pogba is a big man to get over these hills he's uh comes from holland he's a very good flat rider around his own country but that's all the points gone so we've neutralized the first king of the mountains bob because none of those boys are in the competition yet but uh tergis has done best of the bunch at the front he gets 10 points in the king of the mountains purely here he is oh sorry this is pierre yeah exactly a little bit same team just a little bit in front of the peloton almost a minute ahead no points on offer but get a little bit of an advantage if he can stay off the front over this climb through the descent and the next climb to come not sure how prudent this move is tactically for pierre litur hey bobby's french he's french it's bastille day anything any hope is good you didn't listen to the winemaker though perhaps that was talking to steve perrino said he had no [Laughter] this is the team looking after him still well they're hurting but they know hey there'll be a big payout in paris if he wins first prize half a million euros about seven hundred thousand dollars that'll do nicely [Applause] this is la tour now topping at the climb of the caldera sword he's going over just over three minutes back of those six front runners and only about 45 50 seconds ahead of the peloton they'll be up next there they are jonas finger go enjoying uh sitting there is that i think bob jonas finger go is our next teddy pagacha and our next aegon bernal the last two winners of the tour de france incredible time trialling skills for such a handy climber jonas finger go about a buck 35 at least at the start of the tour de france might have lost a few pounds since then but third in the opening time trial and that is very impressive considering how well he goes in the mountains to be able to time trial that well he has a tremendous will to sit on also in the black yellow and red jersey as champion of belgium his teammate walt van art great descender broad shoulders lots of aerodynamic advantage sitting on van art's wheel so that's a big asset for jonas finga go this this big bunch is going to slim down dramatically on this climb for the final showdown where richard cara pass if he wants to get closer to the yellow jersey must gain time on the next climb and the last climb of the day this is it bob the front group is cracking wide open here now and anthony tergis is unhooked at the back and just ahead of him as well is dorian godin yeah anthony perez going on the offensive not waiting for the sprint at the top that he lost on the previous climb anthony perez looking to add to some to his point total some major points got him at 27 right now go up to 37 and move up in the kom standings he tried to get that jersey last year was the virtual leader of that and on the last descent of the stage early in last year's tour de france crashed out of the entire tour while in the virtual lead of the polka dots they're not likely to get that jersey back today or for the rest of the tour for that matter there's maxine chevalier over two and a half hours behind he's back with the yellow jersey now second tour de france for him he finished last year the first attempt in paris and he's looking good for a second finish in paris on sunday as well this man don't forget he is the local rider on the stage today he lives in toulouse now just by where murray is where we started this morning and he's been in the breakaway all day he's been a prominent rider throughout the race he's having a great tour de france anthony perez that yellow jersey group is down to just 40 riders now goodness knows where the other 100 have disappeared to as we continue this will be dorian i think he's still on the climb dodian go down he's a big man to get up these mountains bob isn't he six foot three are not super heavy just inside of 170 pounds at least at the start of the tour maybe he's lost a couple of kilos along the way and got a little bit better climbing legs but he has distance chevalier amongst others and anthony tourgees on paper much better climbers so having a good day for dorian gudon valverde in the blue 67 back to the field looking a little bit further up there's the polka dots of wild poles points up for grabs let's see if polls has the ability to go for them or the knowledge that there are points available this is grumero just in the pink at the back the teammates of uh rigoberto around looks as i was looking at his car [Applause] well the decibels from the crowd and perez is riding on a crowd of noise now france are all cheering for him because this is bastille day in france it's a long time since warren buffet was the last frenchman to win a stage of at the tour de france on bastille day he did that in 2017 and he's riding with good temper this smell i think is happy to just get on with it bob this man is not stressing that much at all right now one climb still to come i did see mike woods and while polls moving forward in the peloton so they have been told that there are points up for grabs turgis don't believe has been caught godon either they should be over the top at least godon and perez within there's the top of the king of the mountain so perez most certainly is going to get there what a stunning view peloton won't have a chance to look at it they'll have their eyes on the twists and turns in front of them before the final climb but spectacular pyrenees landscape as always and it's great to see the crowds back at the tour de france in earnest as the restrictions ease in europe good news for the peloton nothing like being cheered at the top of a climb when you're feeling good at the front of the field like anthony perez is today and here he comes over the summit and now there's only one hill remains he gets the 10 points to match the eight he got on the previous climb he's suddenly becoming a challenger in the king of the mountains with another big day in the mountains tomorrow including the giant called the tourmalet as well as another mountaintop finish on the loser hardy then a good one will have gone over there in second place [Applause] and this is richie port moved to the front he told us at the start today on this program they had a plan he wouldn't tell us what it was but now he's come to the front and he's hurting the riders behind as well taking a bottle off of somebody from the team and i guess that's the reason he went to the front bob because it was strapped with uh some sort of a gel bar as well which he's about to digest one kilometer to the summit brandon mcnulty from phoenix arizona wasn't scheduled to do the tour de france originally it was a schedule to do the giro to continue his progression but when ua uae looked at the roster of all the riders they had to choose from they decided that brandon mcnulty would be one of the best candidates they have as well polls goes on the attack for kom points let's see mcnulty will just stay on the wheel set a seti tempo quintana going after them but i don't see mike woods going for it that's a little bit of a surprise maybe not realizing that three riders have been caught so that would be four points and that will extend his advantage over michael woods nairo quintana gets a couple of points and it looks like tate gets one wow i'm not sure if he realizes what exactly he's doing there but moving closer to the yellow excuse me the polka dots is the yellow jersey 25 k's to go after a few kilometers of descending the rest of them all uphill phil a good safe result that for a polls because now he's increased his lead slightly in the king of the mountains uh and there's double points on the last climb of the day there are 40 points for the winner of the stage today on the call depot daunting prospect of just inside of 50 minutes of climbing for probably the fastest everybody else closer to an hour probably of climbing to finish off today's stage a real backbreaker and um first person to attack tourji's still hanging tough in between but closing in on the nine miles of climbing for the peloton when they get to that 15 k's to go and just it's just really amazing that this climb could go on and on and on for so long before the finish line you see the profile the black is over nine percent ingredient with the steepest section already passed at the bottom we're in the red zone moving to the second black zone at the moment meanwhile bob and i find this quite a surprising or is it an indictment against the riders that they can't do it but there's been no attacks it is slowly but surely becoming a man against himself here there is brandon mcnulty absolutely pulling himself inside out for this rider here's team captain teddy pagacio and now has gone again off the back and i don't think he will be coming back this time either mcnulty absolutely magnificent as he paces rafael mica another teammate of course of pagatcha and jonas bingago here tagged right on the back wheel the world champion is cracked too and nairo kitana also about to get dropped because of the pacemaking by brandon mcnulty mcnulty having a spectacular climb on the coal deporte in support of his leader tade pogacha naira quintana who won here in 2018 that's not going to happen again today there's no happy memories now for him he knows the road extremely well he won't be seeing the finish though with this group mcnulty what this man has become an absolute superstar in two and a half weeks of cycling in the tour de france well done brendan oh dear and this is also the job for the champion of belgium he was up near the front of outbound earth has become unhitched as well dreams he was nurturing and becoming the king of the mountains i've been blown away on the caldepote richie port also in trouble so that'll leave carapace just g thomas and castro viejo there goes perez attacking let's see if godon can't cover that red's going a long ways off now just three minutes ahead of the chasers impressive climbing today by anthony perez from kofi's well throughout the history of the tour de france the french have never liked one another they always attack each other for some reason they're often criticized in the press for it the great battles that we've seen from between raymond corridor and jacques oncotel they never rode together and it looks like perez is following in the mould he's decided he wants to be alone on the climb and actually thought bob that in fact uh godom was becoming the stronger on the climber i guess i was wrong [Music] spending a lot of energy to catch back up to anthony perez perez riding in his own temple this is going to be a tall order to hold off the peloton but he's trying his best to do so impressive riding by anthony perez he'll be a huge hero in france on bastille day trying to go for glory in the stage win ben o'connor's riding well filled in the white jersey white helmet of ag2r starting to grimace for the first time and bilbao about to get caught micah's setting an incredible tempo i'm not sure how long he can keep that up well that's that's it he's launched him he actually launched him that's what micah did he said i'm gonna take you and i'm going he's taken him and he's gone now it's up to teddy pagacha the leader of the tour de france with a buffer over anybody of five minutes he is taking the race to his rivals finger go right behind him ready to mark him ben o'connor and then perez caught and dropped immediately by that acceleration from teddy paga wiped out a big disadvantage vinga go up to the task at the moment ben o'connor hanging tough and that is micah his job done go to the finish line another big day tomorrow so he needs to recuperate paddy pogacchia a long ways to go to be in the lead vingo measuring him around in the pink jersey has made the juncture but let's see if anybody has the legs to attack teddy pagacio this is the time to do it if you can this is a personal battle amongst these riders they've battled shoulder the shot he's gone again well can they match a second kick here by paga look at his face he is determined to go alone look at the riders behind grit their teeth here that's castroviello but he could reach him but he's looking for for where canopus is accountable do it finger go is trying to get across today pagasha a big dig the first time we've really seen him go into the hurt tank but vingo measures that acceleration gets right back on the wheel impressive riding by the man in the white jersey well this is eliminating his rivals one by one but he's finding he's still gonna battle on his hand with the rider in the white jersey here the owners of inga go has the cheek to clip his elbow and say come and do some work at the front to the leader of the tour de france [Applause] iran not looking strong it looks like egypt is trying to get back to the wheel of iran and maybe give him some help set some temple for iran and try to close down his disadvantage to the riders that are just behind him in the overall standings vinca go and carapaz karapas suffering at the moment vingo seems to be pretty cool and collected and rig alberta iran for the first time on a big climb in this year's tour de france in trouble behind his rivals in the overall standings well around at the moment conceding second place to finger go and in turn calapas could be claiming third place we could be looking at the podium in paris on sunday with these three riders alarm a little bit worried about the grimace on the face of the man at the back of these three [Applause] impressive response to those accelerations another one coming from this is the black zone the last black zone of the climb here we're looking for the kilometers who we go through the tunnel first 1.1 miles to the top now uh the actual race could be decided in the tunnel well of course we can't show you the pictures it's jeff black in there as well this is teddy pagacha with a lead that seems to be insurmountable he just wants to build it and build it the tunnel is ahead one mile to go closing in on the last kilometer pogacha unable to shake his two rivals vingo looking very good gaodu chasing still losing a little bit of ground increasing his advantage to the iran group that's chasing him but tari pogacha surprisingly has not been able to shake vinegar or carapaz absolutely superb it's a long time since we've seen three riders of ability like this riding together hitting each other hard and not going anywhere for gotcha at 532 winger god this is the virtual standing 533 one second between carapaz and bingo and remember 10 6'4 in bonus time at the finish so it's going to be a bigger gap there somewhat one way or another still leading this group there goes karapaz attacking the leaders i just look at the reaction from the yellow jersey of the tour de france he's sprinting across the gap vinegar is finding himself in a battleground now hanging on and has lost it they're racing for the tunnel when they come out ill when they go in it's one kilometer to the finish bingo go caught there by the attack of catapults waiting on the wheels for that moment and karapas going all in that is an impressive attack but teddy pagacha up to the challenge of richard carapaz into the darkness of the call deporte out the other side two riders together here as they continue now towards the end of this taste richard cara pass from ecuador we've never seen a bike rider like him by the way he's got the name richard which is rather english because his mother liked it but he's very much an ecuadorian citizen i'm proud they are of him too he's saving his best for this stage that's for sure cara pass putting vinga go into trouble but not tony pogacchia dude not that far behind so an impressive ride by david gadou the frenchman superb right back i do he said all along he wanted a high finish he's heading for it let's hope he climbs up into the top nine riders tonight after his performances and you know jonas at bingo goal inside 800 meters to the line is clawing his way back to the yellow jersey first three across the line gets small time bonuses who would have thought after 17 days of racing would even talk about a 10 second bonus a six second bonus and a four second bonus but he could alter the positions of second and third in the tour de france or a two-up sprint for the stage win between anybody kara paz bogacci managed that acceleration vinca go in a little bit of trouble you think about the time trial to come karapaz needs way more time than this on vingo to be safe in his position he'll move into second place at the end of today's stage uh but vinca go all he has to do is stay close to carapace but tony poga the man of the hour continued to ride brilliantly in this year's tour de france [Music] richard karapas no ecuador rider has ever won a stage of the tour de france and he's leading at 300 meters to go but one fears with the yellow jersey behind him he's just like eddie merks who was called the caravan calipas currently is now up into second here but it's not quite right that because bingo is right behind him just now there we go fighting back trying to get back on terms with bulgacha and karapad let's see if finka go doesn't go straight past if he can do you bet he will if he can canopaz jumps again can today steal the show the man who leads the tournament by over five minutes still wants to win the stages or will he let richard calapas oh no he won't here he comes behind the motorbike he's gone for it teddy pogo going for his second win he won the time trial on stage five on stage 17 he has become the champion of the mountains fighting back david a little bit further down the mountain but absolutely supreme at the cola deporte today defending the yellow jersey in the best possible way with a stage win and a time bonus [Music] is going to do coming up the mountain there's been so many heroes in the tour de france these last few days but this man has been special as well he had a brilliant day yesterday i thought you've just blown your tour today you'll be too tired but he isn't david go do is coming up here bob to finish fourth and hopefully break in to the top ten ben o'connor having a good final couple of k's trying to close down his disadvantage just behind go dude go do a few agonizing meters ago you'll see the finish line right now and get there in fourth place on bastille day the frenchman gets fourth over the line and a leg up the overall ben o'connor comes behind here and he will maintain his fifth place overall in the tour de france which is a lot more than he ever thought he would be in a position of doing at the start of this race impressed kelderman [Music] [Music] for the spanish a lot expected of him but today this mountain has hurt him and he's lost time martin luther also a long ways down the mountain probably stay in the top 10 for enrique moss but not the day that movie star or the tour that movie star had hoped for at the start of the race a tough day for enrique moss for sure here's lutsenko even harder day for lucenco [Music] still a ways to climb before the finish yes absolutely he'll swap places he'll swap places barbara with enrique they were 10 seconds apart in the overall stage winner he did this stage five it'll be back there a couple more times at least today for the yellow and the white and then tomorrow on the next day and i mean i'm just thinking about that's the first time he's ever won a stage in the yellow jersey but how many more times we're going to see that in the future as well but he had he was on a mission today chris i mean he's sick of being defensive that's not his nature i think he's happiest when he's on the attack and we and we got to start looking at the mountain classification for today also good point his lead was 5 18 over rigo berto iran to start the day now it's 5 39 over jonas vengal karapas great ride today he moves up to third place and ran down to fourth on the second page the deficit's really really growing there uh wilco kelderman bloody comes in he's just over eight minutes back again martin was up to second place a little bit earlier in the tour but now almost 12 minutes down tony pagacha today was his ninth day in yellow with the lead that's 21 seconds greater now that he steps up to the podium tamar will be his tenth they're gonna be the race leader they're gonna need a trailer behind the bus for all those lines there paul i mean i don't know what they do with all this stuff i'm starting to give it away and the jerseys of course and like chris said watch out for the polka dot jersey as well you made a big step up in the right direction now only trailing by 11 points from what pulse good to see him celebrate and smile that way from today gotcha in the yellow we go to those polka dots of the polka dot jersey standings four guys were within ten points of each other to start the day and now it's polls with that cushion you talked about over time yeah not much of a cushion really if this comes down to the gc favorites on tomorrow stage two that's going to be difficult the whole weltpole's going to need to find some more points or hope that today pagatcha doesn't take maximum points on tomorrow's two monster climbs coming up saudi won the polka dot last year as well [Music] get so used to seeing change with the polkadot jersey guys and now wow polls is settling in yeah like chris says i don't trust teddy sitting behind me at all i mean he took it by mistake last year let's be honest in the time trial didn't expect to see that when he took all the money home on the 20th stage so it could be if it comes down to a g seats it they tomorrow he could take it by default again as well while pulse really needs an early breakaway to slip up the road and go at least over the first climb while polls would be his third day in the polka dots third consecutive day fourth overall in the tour tomorrow young ryder standings sade pagacha first jonas venga go in second it's been this way for a while yeah i guess we're not going down a top five anymore just because it's going after an hour we stop so yeah sergio gates now over an hour massively if it wasn't for jonas in second place this would be even more of a runaway train eagan bernal stage 13 last year was the last time anyone besides today earned the whites they could go wearing it because today is busy wearing the yellow there were some moments today where it looked like vengeance might be stepping up there as the stage winner too he did he looked strong he did a great job but chris i don't think he had the legs to go anywhere no one had the legs obviously but he did a great job fighting back after karapas big attack van gogh suffered hard to come back and just latch on with 200 meters to go still keep a little bit in the gas tank to coast to the finish for second on the stage today pagacio though just too strong by the way no rider has ever won the yellow and the white in back-to-back years in san diego with a great chance to do that this year we saw wins by team how about wins by nation slovenia now with three not only the two stage wins for toni pagacha but remember mate mahorick also won most aggressive what do you think guys french writer anthony perez bastille dave i called it before he stepped you didn't it's true your timing was good all that's deserved come on let's be honest here even though it is they're independent we have to say that this is a good one for anthony perez and all of france at least i have something to talk about tonight over their pasties davi godu fourth on the stage that was pretty impressive for france but this was a big big right here from anthony perez to stay off by four minutes over the second climb [Music] [Music] you
